The Pride Omnibus with Joe Glass

bonus

One of the great things about comics is that there’s a story for everyone. A character for everyone. Or there can be, some groups are just more well represented than others. What can you do? If you’re Joe Glass, you can go write a comic that has been popular enough to spawn a 400+ page omnibus release. I’d say that’s doing a little something to make sure that marginalized portions of the population can get some more and better representation wouldn’t you? This episode is brought to you by everyone who has made The Pride possible. Which might even include you. Pick up your copy from your local comic shop, Amazon, or Joe’s personal pick Big Bang Comics. Or you can prove to me that you read show notes by telling me that I have this offer to give away a copy in the show notes and I’ll enter you in a drawing for a free copy. Assuming I can ship it to you without costing me a small fortune, and if that’s the case we’ll work something out. Learn such things as: How do people possibly miss the point of this series? How many things had Joe written before popping this wonderful series out? Who is the worst group of fans in all of comics? And so much more! You can find Joe on Twitter @JosephGlass, on Instagram @joeglass, YouTube @JoeGlassComics, and his website Joe Glass Comics. Goblin with Eric Grissom and Will Perkins

Comics is a team sport. Unless you’re talking about one of those super talented people who can do everything, but we’re not talking about them right now. We’re looking at a book made by two people who are both good at what they do. Those people: Eric Grissom and Will Perkins. The book: Goblin. I have both of them here to talk about this wonderful story that you really will have to read. Spoiler alert though: it’s pretty good. This episode is brought to you by the wonderful patrons of Play Comics. Want to help support the show? Head over to PlayComics.com/Patreon and you too can get early episodes and other special patron only goodies. Lesser Known Comics with Mark Bernal

bonus

Sometimes a dumb idea actually turns into something. You know, like telling your wife that you’re starting a comic publisher. Or not telling her and just kind of doing it until one day neither of you can deny that this is exactly what’s going on. I’ve never done that. But you know who has? Today’s guest Mark Bernal from Lesser Known Comics. So listen in as I pick his brain about how you can sneaky start a publisher and some of the best parts of doing so as a relative newcomer. This episode is brought to you in part by Lesser Known Comics. Partly because it just makes too much sense not to do it, and partly because they have a Kickstarter going where you can pick up some print copies of their comics. Learn such things as: What are the benefits of listening to employees? How do you just back into running a comic publisher? What are some benefits to knowing Patrick Hickey Jr.? And so much more! You can find Mark and Lesser Known Comics on Twitter @LesserKComics, Instagram @lesserknowncomics, or the Lesser Known Comics website. The Kitchen Witch with Steve Orlando

bonus

There’s only a few things we have to have to survive in this world. Two of those are comics and food. But what if, and I’m being totally serious here, what if you could find a really good comic about food? I’m sure there are others, but Kitchen Witch is really good so that’s what we’re going with right now. Good thing we have Steve Orlando here to talk to about The Kitchen Witch. Makes total sense since he wrote it. After all, that is how these things usually work. And if you’re not convinced that buying The Kitchen Witch is a good move after listening to this then I’m going to have to seriously think about if we’re able to be friends. This Episode is brought to you in part by 215 Ink, which makes total sense since they’re publishing it. Learn such things as: What’s Steve going to make me when I go over to visit? Wait, kitchen witches are a real thing? How many things can Steve be working on at once? (We actually don’t get an answer to this, but it’s a lot) And so much more! You can find Steve on Twitter @thesteveorlando and on Instagram @thesteveorlando. Also buy his comics. They’re good. You won’t regret it. We're never going to get away from Batman are we? Oh well, at least Chaos in Gotham is based on everyone’s favorite Batman animated series. And Batman might possibly have one of the best rogue galleries in comics so you’ve got to think something could be pulled off here. Good thing we’ve got Erin from Girls Talk Comics to come help us look into the situation. So suit up, because this is a fun one. This Episode is brought to you in part by Alex Schumacher, SLG Publishing, and Mr. Butterchips. Learn such things as: Why is Joker a jerkwad? A Silent Night with Justin Richards

bonus

More than anything else right now, I want to make sure that everyone one of you is doing alright in every way possible. We're going through a lot of shit and while taking care of your mental health is really important we as a society aren't in a place yet where it's always something that can be talked about openly. That needs to change. This is one reason why I'm so excited to talk to Justin Richards about his Kickstarter project A Silent Night. Dealing with depression and anxiety is something that you definitely don't have to do alone. I'm not saying that backing this Kickstarter project will help, but it will get the conversation out into the world in a more public way and I have to see that as a good thing. Plus Justin is just A grade good people. Can't really go wrong there. Learn such things as: What's the thought process behind such a personal project like this? How do you get people to submit to such a dark topic? How important are the fuzzy friends? And so much more! You can find Justin on Twitter @EmoComicWriter, Instagram @emocomicwriter, and of course the wonderful Kickstarter page for A Silent Night. If you want to see Thor the best thing I can say is to check out this episode on the Play Comics website because I have pictures there. Spoiler Warning: They're both pretty cute. Break For Real

bonus

Alright guys, we really need to get the house ready to sell. Despite saying that I’ve been working on that most of the free time has been spent working on the podcast in one way or another. Good for content, not so good for getting into a new house. Here’s a quick summary of what I say in the episode: I don’t know how long the break will be because I don’t know how long it will take to get into the new place I’m not halting production during this time, but I am really slowing it down. Weekends before Kayleigh wakes up, a night or two during the week, stuff like that. Everyone I’m already scheduled with a time (not just lined up with a game) is still going to happen. Mostly because it’s all this week. Comic reviews and the newsletter are still going on because I can work on that in pieces and while sitting on the couch watching cartoons I’ll still go on other shows because that’s such a relatively small time commitment I never really took the break last time before that I said was going to happen…. … and that’s leading to a bit of burnout already. I have to do better with keeping the backlog of recorded episodes built up and not recording 3 or 4 episodes in a single week. I still love doing the show. I’ll still be around social media and stuff. And I’m going to figure out something for the Patreon people. I actually have a few ideas for that. Witchblood with Matthew Erman and Lisa Sterle

bonus

It’s finally happened. I got totally peer pressured into reading a comic. Not only that, but in getting the creators on the show too. Although let’s be real about Witchblood for a minute. I definitely would have read this anyway and thought that I should get the creators on the show. That cover + all the hype I’d seen about this one + Vault Comics = I’ll pick it up. It’s simple math. Listen in as Lisa Sterle and Matthew Erman (featuring a special appearance from their dog Rory) come talk about the creation of a comic about a biker witch from Mars (said only because it fits the reference I’m hoping you catch), working with someone you can’t really get away from, and more of an answer to my standard “Do you have any advice for people looking to get into making comics?” question than I’ve gotten from anyone so far. Not that I’m complaining at all. Learn such things as: How can you fit 90s anime and 50s style references into the same work? What should you look for when you’re looking for a publisher? Is it possible that neither Matthew nor Lisa has seen Avatar the Last Airbender? And why, disturbing as that fact is, it really is OK and we shouldn’t hate them for it. And so much more! You can find Lisa on Twitter @lisa_sterle and Instagram @lisasterle and her website lisasterle.com. You can find Matthew on Twitter @MatthewErman and his website matthewerman.com. Victorious Boxers Ippo's Road to Glory with Trevor H (Catching Up on Cinema)

I have a feeling we're about to start hitting a bunch of manga based games. Might as well make one of the early rounds of that be a boxing game. I've got Trevor H from Catching Up on Cinema to help guide me through this one and possibly maybe get my pronunciation a bit better. Fernando Pinto Roundup

bonus

You know what my favorite part of doing this podcast has been? Making such talented friends and having an excuse to share their stuff with the world. For real, it's even better than the comics people give me to read. For example, I got to talk to Fernando Pinto about a few different things from him that I'm very happy to either have in my house right now or will have some time in the future in Warped and Gun Punch. Both are really fun comics that you should definitely check out. Learn such things as: What should you do if you see a disclaimer in a book that says it's not for kids but you looked at the artwork and bought it for your small child anyway? How can you go about finding someone to work on your idea with you? Who has prettier eyes between Chris and Fernando? And so much more! Razorblades with Steve Foxe

Horror and comics just seem to go hand in hand. Horror comics had a large hand in the creation of the comics code many years ago, and it seems like so many people have a secret love and/or talent for horror. So why not have a place where you can let that out without a big commitment? Enter Steve Foxe, half of the creator team behind Razorblades. James meanwhile was not here and may or may not have been tied up in a basement somewhere.......... Learn such things as: Why do people take on so many projects? What were the real reasons behind Steve and James creating this horror anthology? Who are some of the great creators that have contributed? Where is the picture of Steve's dog? But did you know that there was a time when Street Fighter II hadn't come out yet? And that people were making fighting games before it? Listen in as Andrew Mecha Davis from Popanimecomics joins the show to help take a look at Fist of the North Star 10 Big Brawls for the King of the Universe to help solve the mystery of why this anime hasn't been bigger in the US. And possibly set a new record for longest Play Comics episode title. I'm too lazy to actually go check on that one though, it just feels right. Learn such things as: Can a story be good if you already know where it's going? Does it really matter who characters are in a fighting game? What's the best way to experience Fist of the North Star? And so much more! You can find Andrew on Facebook @Popanimecomics, the Popanimecomics website, the Popanimecomics Lounge podcast, Popanimecomics on YouTube. Scout's Honor with David Pepose

bonus

It's a thing we've all seen before. Post apocalyptic worlds and the groups who rise to power in which to rule them. And it's something I'll never really get tired of because all that really means is that you have a fairly familiar stepping stone into a story that can truly go anywhere. That's what we have here in Scout's Honor (published by those AfterShock dudes who are trying to take all my money by doing silly things like printing good comics and getting creators who are cool people) and why I'm spending this episode talking to writer David Pepose. Listen in as I talk to David about how this wonderful book came to be and what drives him to write the way he does. Learn such things as: What has us drawn to this type of dystopian story? What significant fact did Chris miss while reading this one? Why might I never buy Scout Popcorn every again? What to tell your local comic ship if you want to preorder #2 (DEC201133) or #3 (JAN211049) And so much more! M.O.D.O.K Head Games with Jordan Blum

Comics have such a long history that there's no way anybody can know everything about every character. M.O.D.O.K. is that way for me. I have an idea of who this giant killing organism is but only because he's happened to be in other things. Good thing I have Jordan Blum, one of the writers on the current mini-series M.O.D.O.K Head Games, on to let me know how much fun this series is (he's right) and how it's OK that I really don't know much going into reading this or watching the TV show due out later this year. Learn such things as: What was Jordan's real reason for making the upcoming M.O.D.O.K. show? How much trouble is Jordan going to get into with Marvel editor Jordan D White? What did I do to make Jordan sad? And so much more! Hulk (2003) With Josh Sutton (Panels to Pixels)

No matter what you want to think, the Ang Lee Hulk film exists. And there's a game to go with it. Yup, it's a movie tie in game and we all know how those were back in the day. Or do we? Listen in as Josh Sutton from Panels to Pixels takes a stab at convincing you that not only is this a good movie to go watch, but it's also not a horrible game to go with it. Learn such things as: Do people really want a comic book movie that looks like a comic book? Does Al Ewing secretly love the Ang Lee film? Will I ever skip an opportunity to tell someone they need to read Immortal Hulk? And so much more! You can find Josh at his YouTube channel Panels to Pixels and over on Twitter @panelstopixels. Sea of Sorrows with Rich Douek

bonus

Let's cut to the chase here. I'm a sucker for creators who I see out in the world pushing their stuff. Rich was out in the world pushing his stuff. It certainly doesn't hurt that Sea of Sorrows is the kind of thing I'd want to read anyway. Historical horror with a lot of it happening under the sea? Yup, sign me up right now. I even wrote a review you can read here. So like I said, I'm really excited to have Rich Douek on the show to talk about Sea of Sorrows and how it came to be in this crazy world we've had this year. Just a heads up though, there were some screaming child audio issues. I did what I could with those. Learn such things as: How did COVID effect this book's release? Why go with the post WWI setting? Octobug with Eric Bailey (Tiny Bookshelf)

bonus

I look at comics all the time here in this Creator Talk set of bonus episodes. And I've looked at a card game that you play in the real world with actual, physical cards like some kind of caveperson. But somehow I've never looked at an actual video game. Until now that is. Time to get old friend Eric Bailey from Tiny Bookshelf to break through that barrier with his game Octobug. You play as a spider trying to get to the end of levels filled with flies. It's an old school platformer which reminds me a lot of NES games or computer games from when I was in elementary school. Learn such things as: What are some problems that game developers run into? Is it possible to get a cat to do what you want? How do you find play testers for a game you might be making? And so much more! Be sure to check out https://playcomics.com/octoboug-with-eric-bailey for some screenshots from the game. Enter Steve Honeycutt from Ray Can't Sleep to help us take a look at this alien life form that inexplicably wants to save the Earth. Long Ago & Far Away with Chris Mancini

bonus

There are tons of stories about little kids who get to go to other worlds and have grand adventures. Like literally tons, and I'm cool with that. But what I really want to know is how they handled things afterwards. Outside of Peter Pan related things (and Narnia but I think that's a bit of a stretch) there isn't really anything. That's where Chris Mancini from White Cat Entertainment can help out. Listen in as we talk to Chris about his comic Long Ago & Far Away, which takes a look at what happens when a 30 year old former child hero gets sucked back into the far away world that he helped save long ago. Learn such things as: How much of himself did Chris put into the characters? What are some good strategies for getting your stuff in front of readers? Post apocalyptic mayhem. New societies and population groups popping up and insisting that they are living the right way. The power struggle between might and right. Good thing I have Jordan Forbes from Shonen Flop to help me out with a look at Fist of the North Star on NES. Everyone that I know who knows who The Addams family is knows them from the 1960s TV show or the 90s movies. A few people from this game. Armorines Project SWARM with Luke Herr (Multiversal Q/RPG Pals Club/Established Property Playhouse)

This has got to be one of the shortest comic runs I've seen to get a game. 13 issues on the initial run, 4 issues on the relaunch that tied into the game. And it shows, I never hear anyone talking about Armorines. I can't imagine why. So why try to make a game out of this one? Acclaim is at it again trying to recapture some of that Turok magic, and Luke Herr from Exiled, Multiversal Q, John Wiki, The Luke Herr Podcast Project, Established Property Playhouse, and RPG Pals Club (Did I miss anything there?) comes on the show to help explain what's going on with this crazy comic. Mostly because he's literally the only person I know who's read this thing. Plus he made notes. Really good notes. Learn such things as: What dumb dad joke did we take almost an hour to make? 215 Ink with Mike Perkins

bonus

It's about time I talk to someone on the publishing side of things. Sure, you can self publish and do everything yourself but wouldn't it be nice if there was someone who could help you out with that? Maybe someone like Mike Perkins from 215 Ink perhaps? I sure hope so because that's who I got. Listen in as I learn from Mike some of what goes into getting a comic into my hands, and be sure to head over to the 215 Ink shop to pick up some of their stuff. Or maybe even look into submitting something you've been working on? I know I have some talented listeners here even if they don't believe me. And when you buy something, because I know you will, be sure to mention that you're friends with me. Learn such things as: How should you send a pitch to a publisher? How bad can my art be when I send something in? How can I help to get books into people's hands? How can you read the first issue of Freaks and Gods for free? Hint, follow this link. And so much more! You can find Mike and 215 Ink over on Twitter @215Ink, Instagram @215Ink, Facebook @215Ink (are you sensing a theme here?) or the official 215 Ink website. You can also check out the 215 Ink Shop or their selection on Comixology. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure with David Weinberger (Shonen Flop)

It's not often that I've seen a comic really follow along an entire family tree. Maybe a bit down the line but generation after generation after generation after….. well, you get the idea. Too bad I'm not a expert on the Jostar family legacy. Good thing David Weinburger from Shonen Flop who thankfully is all over this one. Things will probably get a bit bizarre. Learn such things as: When do family naming conventions go too far? Am I crazy for thinking the anime art was made using Jolly Ranchers? Why am I forcing David to learn Japanese And so much more! Funko Pops with Adam Williamson (Boldly Viewing)

bonus

My wife says no Funko Pops for me, at least not if I'm paying for them. She lets me get video games and comics, so I guess I can't complain. But since I was shutdown before I could even express any kind of interest in getting some I never really looked into them. That's where Adam Williamson comes in. I learn some about the history of these big headed little dudes, how he gets away with having so many, and just what I'm missing out on. Learn such things as: How do you get DC and Marvel to play nicely together? Where did this whole thing start? I'm saving how much money by not buying these!? And so much more! Spider-Man Lethal Foes with Adam Messinger

Sometimes Japan gets something super cool that we don't. Alright, that happens all the time. But in this case it really sucks because it's a good Spider-Man game based on a comic mini series and it really wouldn't have taken much to get it ready to come out over here. Listen in as Adam Messinger comes to talk about Spider-Man Lethal Foes and we cry over the fact that this game never got a proper US release. Learn such things as: Why do villains keep trying to work together? Seriously, is it that hard to let someone else use a thing before you sell it? Does this story arc even really need a game? And so much more! You can find Adam on Twitter @AdamSMessinger, Instagram @adamsmessinger, A live performance called Adam S. Politics in Comics with Reed Puc, Kamijace, and Adam Williamson

bonus

The world is once again whining about finding politics in the entertainment. Almost like they haven't been paying attention to anything for years. Oh my gosh, when did all of this politics get into comics? Can't we go back to the good old days when it just wasn't there? Excuse me, I could barely keep a straight face typing that out. Listen in as Reed Puc, Kamijace, and Adam Williamson stop by to talk about the political nature of comics. Atlantis Wasn't Built for Tourists with Eric Palicki

bonus

I had the pleasure of having Eric Palicki come on to talk about his new book Atlantis Wasn’t Build for Tourists coming to us from Scout Comics on August 17th. That’s plenty of time for you to ask your local comic shop to make sure they have a copy for you. Or later, the everything going on in the world has been messing with release dates all over the place. Atlantis Wasn’t Built for Tourists is best described Scout does it on their website, because I’m afraid of giving out spoilers. > When a drifter stumbles upon a small town trapped between a corrupt sheriff and the bloodthirsty monsters lurking in the countryside, his quest for a hot meal takes a whole new turn. Mr. Butterchips with Alex Schumacher

bonus

I think some of the best social commentary comes from the viewpoint of a character who can say what they want without really worrying about the consequence. Someone who can just say what’s on their mind and that’s that. Even better when it’s an animal just because I find that more entertaining. So I’m really glad that Alex Schumacher and I finally got together to talk about his new book collecting a bunch of his web comic Mr. Butterchips. Ranma 1/2: Hard Battle with Steampunk Link (SNEScapades)

One of the things that I like about anime (and manga probably too if I'd consistently read it) is magical realism. There's just something cool about a world where paper animals can be brought to life or dragons are real or things like that and it's not a big deal. Or where people can fall into a haunted spring and get transformed if they're hit with the right, or wrong, temperature of water. Listen in as Steampunk Link from SNEScapades comes on the show to talk about this game about a crazy manga where people switch genders and turn into animals nobody seems to really care about anything except literally fighting over a girl before school. Except the teachers, they don't care at all. Learn such things as: Arranged marriage and the cultural differences When games are good enough to get a release but not good enough to keep the source material intact Doesn't it suck when we don't get the good game in the series? And so much more! If you want to be a guest on the show please check out the Be a A Guest on the Show page and let me know what you’re interested in. Ch05en with Will Dickstein

bonus

One of the things I've really come to like about comics is that there are so many stories happening at once. You can tell there's something overarching going on but can also focus on what's just in front of you at the moment. The problem for me has been knowing where to start, what tie ins need to be read and what can be skipped, if something is going to be a good jumping on point, that sort of thing. Will Dickstein might have that solved with his Ch05en series. The newest edition, which focuses on Kris, was my first experience in this world and I didn't feel lost at all reading it. In fact I really want to go back and read more of it now to see what else is going on. So no matter if you want to start with this Kris centered story or anywhere else in the series you'll be in a good place.
