Ep 654Postgame 3/4: Gir-WOOOO
Remember when Claude Giroux wasn't scoring? Me neither. The captain came up clutch on Thursday night, netting a pair of goals himself and picking up an assist on a shot that glanced off Scott Laughton and behind Tristan Jarry for a 3-point night, capping the Philadelphia Flyers comeback from a 3-0 deficit in the opening four against the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena. Sean Couturier picked up Philly's first to cut the Pens' lead to 3-1 halfway through the first, and then it was a fight back into the thing, finally capped by G's tap-in on a slick backhand pass from Nicholas Aube-Kubel. Certainly falling down 3-0 before the Anthem ends isn't ideal, but it sure makes for some great theater. For the full reaction, listen to the postgame. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 648Postgame 2/28: Eichel returns, history repeats itself nonetheless
It's important to note that on the day Jack Eichel returned to the Buffalo Sabres lineup, the Philadelphia Flyers took the Alex Winter-lookalike on an excellent adventure, repeating yesterday's history with a convincing 3-0 win. Carter Hart got credit for the shutout in this one, stopping all 28 pucks directed towards him on Sunday afternoon, while Philly potted all three of its goals in a 21-shot second period en route to a blanking of Buffalo. Sean Couturier finished off a great play he started in the neutral zone by putting home a loose puck on in the paint to get things started, Michael Raffl got a stick on a nice point shot from Robert Hagg for the second, and James van Riemsdyk netted his tenth of the year on a beautiful deflection off a Joel Farabee shot/pass. It was another solid, necessary performance from the orange and black, dominating a team they should dominate to close out a 3-0 stretch against awful teams based in New York. Now it's on to March, which will start with three straight in Pittsburgh before returning home for three against the Washington Capitals, with a bonus Buffalo game thrown in for good fun. Ok, that's all the typing I'm going to do. Push play on the pod now. Thanks! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 647Postgame 2/27: Back to Beating Up on the Bad Teams
The Philadelphia Flyers improved to 10-1-1 against teams that aren't the Boston Bruins with a dominant performance against the Jack Eichel-less Buffalo Sabres on Saturday afternoon. The 3-0 victory was Brian Elliott's second shutout of the season, the first also coming in a 3-0 win against Buffalo. Sean Couturier, Shayne Gostisbehere, and Scott Laughton scored for Philly, whose team shot total hit 39 for a second consecutive game. The Flyers have won the shot battle by a combined 78-50 over the last two games, showing that although Boston, the East's elite team, may have their number, the orange and black are taking care of business against lesser competition. Ep 644Postgame 2/24: Wins are fun, I'd almost forgotten
It was good to see the Philadelphia Flyers remembered they have to score more goals than their opponents, and they recognized the best way to do that is by taking considerably more shots. Well, on Wednesday night, the Flyers took a season-high 39 shots on goal en route to a 4-3 win over the New York Rangers, restoring peace and balance to the universe and setting themselves on a course towards the playoffs. Claude Giroux announced his return to the lineup with authority, picking up 3 assists, registering 8 shots on goal and winning 73% of his faceoffs, while Erik Gustafsson and Shayne Gostisbehere each notched their first goals of the season. Other stuff happened- JVR scored, so did Kevin Hayes. Chris Kreider accounted for all the Rangers' offense, scoring a hat trick- the second Philly has allowed in as many games. Brian Elliott was good enough to get the win. Hockey was played, etc. Anyway, click play and listen to the postgame. Then listen to it on another device, too. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 641Postgame 2/21: More like Tah-NO
David Pastrnak is freakin' ridiculous. Like... damn, yo. Pasta netted another hat trick against, his second triple tally game against the Philadelphia Flyers this month, en route to a 7-3 victory in the Lake Tahoe outdoor game on Sunday night. Philly is now 0-3-2 against the best team in the division in 2021, and Carter Hart has surrendered 20 goals in his four starts against the B's. That is... not good. Of course, the Flyers have yet to be at full strength when lining up against Boston, but all the excuses in the world don't make up for the three goals potted by Charlie Coyle, Trent Frederic, and Nick Ritchie in about a minute-and-a-half late in the second period. That's it, I'm done summarizing. You saw the game. Now, listen to the postgame. For real. Click play. Now. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 639Postgame 2/18: Sunday should be... fun?
Production disclaimer: yes, I realize the audio is shaky in some spots. I forgot to record the broadcast separately so I had to take the audio from the Twitch recording, which apparently wasn't that great. My apologies. It's mostly fine. Without Claude Giroux, Jake Voracek, Scott Laughton, Oskar Lindblom, Travis Konecny, or Justin Braun the Philadelphia Flyers earned a point in a comeback shootout loss to a divisional rival. Of course, that rival was the lowly New York Rangers, the Flyers took a 1-0 lead a minute into the game and went 0/5 on the power play, but I'm choosing to look at the good. Well, that was a lie. Philly looked liked they were being defended by Tortorella's Rangers in the 2014 playoffs again, seeing 27 of their shot attempts blocked. The orange and black didn't help their cause much, missing the net on another 11 attempts. If a couple more of those reach the crease, perhaps while on the power play, this is a regulation win for the Fly Guys. It was not to be, however. Despite some late-game heroics by Joel Farabee, whose seventh goal of the season sent the game to overtime and tied him for the team lead with James van Riemsdyk, and a big penalty kill in the extra frame, the outcome was ultimately disappointment, as Kaapo Kakko and Artemi Panarin each beat Carter Hart in the shootout, while only Sean Couturier was able to solve Alexandar Georgiev, meaning the final standings point went to the Blueshirts. Ok, there's your summary and it's long enough so the story shows up in search results, now listen to the postgame. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 638Checking out the competition: The Rangers are bad!
New friend of the pod Eleni of The Ice Garden joined us on incredibly short notice for a rather excellent conversation about the current state of the New York Rangers. Ep 628Postgame 2/3: YOU BLEW IT!
Despite a slow start that saw David Pastrnak blow by Shayne Gostisbehere and deflect his first goal of the game off of Ivan Provorov in the game's first 12 seconds, the Philadelphia Flyers actually played one of their best games of the season on Wednesday night against the Boston Bruins. That is, of course, until a comedy of errors, namely stupid penalties, began in late in the third period. Protecting a 3-1 lead, Nicholas Aube-Kubel lead off the calamity by closing his hand around the puck when he caught a pop-fly in the neutral zone. Pasta scored his second of the night 10 seconds after the call to put Boston within one. Then, with two minutes left, Kevin Hayes got called for a lazy hook, which allowed No. 88 to convery his hat trick with only 14 seconds left in regulation. Finally, in the game's final 7 seconds, Scott Laughton committed a dumb interference which gave the Bruins a power play to begin overtime, a 4-on-3 advantage they used to win the game 30 seconds into the extra frame. Yup, Philly gave this one away. For full analysis, check out the postgame. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 623Postgame 1/31: Three from the bee's knees
The Philadelphia Flyers kept their winning ways intact on Saturday night as they took care of the New York Islanders 4-3 thanks to Kevin Hayes’ overtime tally to make it four straight victories. Joel Farabee produced his second hat trick in the win as he lasered a few dishes from James van Riemsdyk (three assists) past Ilya Sorokin to hand the Orange and Black their fourth win in their last five meetings with New York. The Flyers’ forecheck was effective in the first 40 minutes as two of Farabee’s markers came off plays JVR made to gain possession of the puck in the offensive zone before the second-year forward benefitted with goals. It looked as though it was going to be the Flyers’ night until the third period, when the club allowed two preventable goals before finding themselves needing extra time resulting in Hollywood Hayes’ knockout punch. Along with the usual concerns surrounding this team involving defense and toughness, we also delved into if we should be concerned about the power play, the penalty kill looking better, new options on the blue line, Nolan Patrick, and interference away from the puck. Ep 622Postgame 1/30: Maybe looking bad is a real strategy
This episode of postgame is all about the Flyers and their struggles, and the conflict between wanting to criticize them and also wanting to celebrate the 6-2-1 record. However, I'm going to use this space to talk about how awful the New York Islanders are. Their style of hockey is simply just "cheating." They get away with everything because Barry Trotz is one of the good ol' boys and since they interfere on literally every shift, the refs won't call it because it's just "how they play the game." It's bullshit. It makes for awful television and is exactly what will continue to drive down the value of the NHL's on-ice product, which needs selling pretty soon. Good luck with that. Anyway, The Flyers won in a thrilling overtime after a fairly pedestrian and often frustrating 60 minutes of regulation hockey, if you can call what the Isles play "hockey," that is. Ep 619Postgame 1/28: However, Carter Hart
The Philadelphia Flyers entered Thursday night's game against the New Jersey Devils with nine points in the standings and left the game with 11. That's good. But, like... does this look like a very good team to you right now? Philly was outshot 34-17 on the night, and 24-8 through the first two periods. The break out, defensive assignments, and actually shooting when possessing the puck in the vicinity of the opposing net continued to be issues. However, Carter Hart. The 22-year-old netminder saw his first action since his stick-smashing effort against Boston last week, and he won the game for the oranger and black. Hart stopped 33 of Jersey's 34 offerings, giving his team a chance despite a lackluster first 40 minutes of play in front of him. If nothing else, Hart's game gave fans a reason to be optimistic. Ep 617Postgame 1/26: Good enough, for now...
The headline should be the Philadelphia Flyers beat the New Jersey Devils 5-3. The power play converted early, with James van Riemsdyk netting a pair of man-advantage goals in the game's first 21 minutes, Shayne Gostisbehere looking solid in his first action of the season, and the depth came up big in the third period, with goals from Nolan Patrick and Joel Farabee to put the game out of reach. Good stuff. But, as is always the case, context is king. After the Flyers went up 2-0 59 seconds into the second period, they found themselves tied with NJ by the end of the middle frame, and unable to reclaim momentum for a majority of the second half of the game. Still, Philly went up 5-2 on an Ivan Provorov long-range empty-netter before surrendering a goal to Pavel Zacha with 1:08 remaining in the third and earned themselves two points in the standings to rebound from their awful showings against Boston last week. Ep 613Postgame 1/23: I miss the good Flyers
The Philadelphia Flyers capped off a forgettable trip to Boston with a 6-1 shellacking on Saturday to create more questions than answers when it comes to deciding what to make of the Orange and Black in 2021. After Kevin Hayes leveled the score at one 1:14 into the second stanza, the Bruins rattled off the contest’s final five goals for Philly’s second game with six goals against only six tilts into the season. Carter Hart allowed six goals on 26 shots against, but as has been the case all season it’s not all on him. The skaters in front of Hart certainly had their hand in a few goals last night, especially Erik Gustafsson. The team actually did well clogging up the neutral zone early last night before the game started to unravel, as well as limiting multi-chance cycles and extended zone time against, but they still left Hart helpless on several plays. With nearly every element of the team struggling at the moment there was a lot to talk about in last night’s postgame including the defense, needing to add another blue liner, the penalty kill, Samuel Morin, and the weird forward lines. If, in the same game, the Philadelphia Flyers both played like trash and were lucky to come away with a point, and also blew 2-0 and 3-2 leads in the third period, can we just say the game never happened? Ep 608BSH Radio #291: Let's reassess
We are four games, three wins, and entirely too many injuries into the 2021 hockey season, which makes this a good time for the gang to step back and reassess what this team is, where they are going, and what we should expect. Ep 607Postgame 1/19: Would you call it a... GRITTY win?
The Philadelphia Flyers rebounded from Monday’s embarrassing loss with a 3-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres at the Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday night. The Flyers collected their fifth and sixth points in the standings on the back of Brian Elliott’s 40-save shutout, and Travis Konecny’s clutch breakaway goal late in the second period, to improve their record to 3-1-0 for the season. Ep 606Postgame 1/18: Just keeping the division competitive
That was... not great. The Philadelphia Flyers lost for the first time in 2021 in embarrassing fashion, dropping the first of back-to-backs at home against the previously winless Buffalo Sabres. Buffalo, obviously feeding off the momentum created by their AFC Championship Game-bound NFL counterparts, dominated Philly at the Wells Fargo Center on Monday night. The Flyers were outshot 37-22, out-hit 28-24, lost the battle in the faceoff circle 35-27, and allowed a pair of power play goals on four opportunities, while going scoreless on their lone man advantage early in the first period. Carter Hart was pulled after allowing four goals on 22 shots in 28 minutes. Hart wasn’t great, but he was sharp in the first period and received little help. The 22-year-old netminder wasn’t solely to blame for the loss, but his second period certainly didn’t help matters. The orange and black just didn’t have it in their third game of the season, but the condensed schedule provides a chance to get right back on the right side of things, with a rematch slated for 7PM Tuesday night. Here’s hoping this was just an off night and not a sign of bigger issues early in what should be an exciting hockey season on Broad Street. Now, listen to the postgame.
