Ugly American Werewolf in London: Help! - The Beatles
Listeners of The Wolf know that despite the fact that The Wolf lived mere yards (or meters) from Abbey Road, he and Action Jackson aren't huge Beatles fans. While he did go through a Beatles stage in high school, it was really an education on how the band evolved and created some amazing music which is still enjoyed and studied today. However, thanks to a run of 60s rock related movies that ran on Cinemax one night in the 80s, The Wolf became very familiar with Help! as he recorded the movie on VHS and watched it over and over. It was in technicolor, unlike A Hard Day's Night, and showed the boys having fun in exotic locales like Switzerland, The Bahamas, Stonehenge and Buckingham Palace. The seven tunes on the album that were included in the movie all hold up well and are fun to sing along with while you're watching. But the album is the first step moving from being bubble gum pop stars into more respected recording artists. We review the UK version of the album as the US version is shorter with orchestrated score tunes from the movie. The whole first side of the UK album features beloved songs from the movie like the title track, Ticket To Ride, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away and The Night Before. But the second side also features some Beatles classics like Ringo singing Act Naturally, I've Just Seen A Face and the all-time classic Yesterday. It's amazing that the boys were all so young (21-24) and were maturing before our eyes as they were now able to write more robust tunes with more mature themes. Bob Dylan had introduced them to marijuana by now and they'd done their first LSD trips which would show up more on an album from later in 1965, Rubber Soul (and after). But this one has one foot in the old, teenage dream Beatles phase and one in the more mature and experimental Beatles. We can't believe it's turning 60 but we went track x track to celebrate. EThis week Tom & Zeus continue their original KISS Draft series with KISS Draft XIV, The Worst KISS Song Draft! The SIOL KISS Draft is back. However, in this draft, Tom & Zeus each pick the worst KISS song for the other host. The guys are trying to create the worst 10 song KISS playlist for each other. The guys discuss, analyze and breakdown and draft these horrendous songs for each other and somehow Esther Rolle makes an appearance. Translator was one of those bands on the precipice of breaking big in the 80s. Signed to local indie label 415 Records, they soon found themselves part of the big-time music business when their label signed a distribution deal with Columbia Records. In 1982, their single, "Everywhere That I'm Not”, became popular on the burgeoning college radio circuit. In 1986, the band decided to call it quits, scheduling a hometown show to reward their ardent fan base with a final San Francisco show. This performance, along with two new songs, are now available on an LP entitled Translator--Beyond Today: Live at the Farm San Francisco 1986. Lead singer/guitarist Steve Barton and drummer Dave Scheff join the podcast to look back at their 80s musical journey, as well as offer some insight into new developments within the band. Vinyl Relics EPYSODE 42: "Before The Dream Faded" by The Misunderstood
EPYSODE 42: "Before The Dream Faded". Guest: Misunderstood lead singer Rick Brown. In this week’s epysode of The Vinyl Relics Podcast, we turn the spotlight on one of the most tragically overlooked albums of the psychedelic era... "Before the Dream Faded" by The Misunderstood. Formed in Riverside, California and exiled to London in the mid-'60s, The Misunderstood fused American garage rock with British psychedelia, creating a sound that was years ahead of its time. With searing slide guitar, political lyrics, and sonic ambition to spare, their music foreshadowed both heavy rock and acid experimentation and yet, they faded before they could truly rise. We’re joined by guest Rick Brown, the band’s original lead singer, who shares powerful firsthand stories about the band's creative vision, their turbulent rise, and the mysterious circumstances that tore them apart just as they were poised for greatness. It's one of the most fascinating “what coulda been” stories in rock history. I hope you dig "Before The Dream Faded" as much as I do. - Farmer John ===CONNECT & SUPPORT=== Transport yourself into the realm of grooviness by supporting us on Patreon using this link --> patreon.com/FarmerJohnMusic Use this link to follow us on Facebook --> https://www.facebook.com/farmerjohnmusic/ Use this link to follow us on Instagram --> https://www.instagram.com/vinylrelics/ Use this link to follow us on TikTok --> https://www.tiktok.com/@vinylrelicspodcast Use this link to follow us on BlueSky --> https://bsky.app/profile/farmerjohnmusic.bsky.social And find us on X here --> @VinylRelicsPod Email me here --> [email protected] ===THE MUSIC=== Songs used in this Epysode, in order of appearance. Only Three Lads: Mike Watt (Minutemen, mssv) - Top 5 Live Versions That Blow the Studio Versions Away
ELive performances often bring an energy and spontaneity that studio recordings can't fully capture. On stage, musicians interact with the audience, infusing the song with a palpable energy and improvisational flair. The live setting can also allow for reinterpretation of arrangements—extended solos, altered tempos, or unexpected twists—that make the experience feel more personal and vibrant compared to the polished, precise nature of studio versions. Just ask legendary bassist Mike Watt, who is about to embark on his 72nd tour over his 45 year career - a career that started with one of the greatest American punk bands ever, Minutemen, and countless projects including fIREHOSE, The Stooges, dos, and, currently, mssv. mssv is a post-genre supergroup consisting of watt, drummer Stephen Hodges (who played on some of Tom Waits's classic records, among others), and led by guitarist extraordinaire Mike Baggetta. It is out now on BIG EGO records on 12" vinyl LP, digital download, and streaming services. mssv's 52-date "haru tour 2025" starts in watt's hometown of San Pedro, CA on March 13th, and winds through the country before concluding at the Zebulon in Los Angeles on May 3rd. Ugly American Werewolf in London: The Session Man - Nicky Hopkins Documentary Review
While the average rock fan may not know the name Nicky Hopkins, the average rock legend knows the name very well and most likely worked with him at some point. A classically trained pianist, Nicky Hopkins would go onto play with the greatest rock bands of all time - The Beatles, The Rollings Stones, The Who, The Kinks - and that was just the 1960s!! Finally, Nicky has been chosen for induction into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame! Though he did have some solo releases, Nicky found himself most at home in the studio working with other artists and helping to create some of the most iconic songs of all time. The eerie beginning to The Stones Monkey Man? That was Nicky. The whirling magic in She's A Rainbow? Nicky again. He ended up playing on over 250 albums and more than 1,000 songs, some of which were the greatest of all time. The Session Man is a documentary about his life and career growing up in the midlands, working his way to London, working with icons and then moving to America. This examination of the soft-spoken Hopkins illustrates his health battles throughout his life which would conspire to keep him off the road for much of his career and how he eventually found a home with other musicians in Northern California and eventually Nashville. Nicky Hopkins is an unsung hero of rock n roll and we're proud to shed a little light on the man and his amazing talent. VINYL RELICS PODAST - Epysode 41: "In The Beginning" by Genesis
EPYSODE 41: "In The Beginning". Guest: Genesis bassist "Foxy" Fred Rivera. This week on The Vinyl Relics Podcast, we dive into one of the great overlooked curiosities of late-‘60s American rock: "In the Beginning" by the Los Angeles-based Genesis — not the British prog giants, but a raw, garage-psych outfit that burned bright and fast in 1968. With its blend of fuzzed-out guitars, moody organ lines, and Sunset Strip attitude, this epysode uncovers why this album has become a cult favorite among psych-rock collectors and crate diggers alike. Even better — we’re joined by guest Fred “Foxy” Rivera, the original bassist of the band, who shares exclusive firsthand stories from inside the L.A. scene, the band’s short-lived journey, and what really went down behind the recording of their one and only album. Tune in, turn on & drop by and rediscover the other Genesis — before Genesis was Genesis. Only Three Lads: The "5 W's" in Song - with Tracey Vath from WUT
We're getting all investigative this week as we address songs that cover the "5 W's" - who, why, when, where...and WUT! Yes, that's right, W-U-T. Because our Third Lad this week is the utterly delightful Tracey Vath, bassist from the Vancouver indie pop trio WUT! It is an episode full of joyous laughter, the top 10 Satanic bands, and a brand new O3L game - "Wut 'chu Talkin' About, Brett?!?" Oh, and what happened in Vegas apparently didn't stay in Vegas. Since 2018, Vancouver BC’s jangle-pop meets riot-twee trio WUT have been making a local name for themselves with their joyfully heartfelt live performances. In 2020, the trio released ‘NOW’, an energetic cassette accompanied by 10 DIY music videos. These earnest and often humorous videos reflect WUT’s playful yet sincere songwriting. Recently, WUT recorded ‘Mingling with the Thorns’, their sophomore full-length album, out now on HHBTM Records. ‘Mingling with the Thorns’ was created during two years of intermittent quarantines which caused guitarist Kaity McWhinney (Knife Pleats / Love Cuts), bassist Tracey Vath (Knife Pleats / Love Cuts), and drummer Lauren Smith (Tough Age / Jock Tears), to write songs independently, and share their ideas through countless emails, dropbox folders, and Google drives. Long periods of isolation were consumed by experimentation with different arrangements, and often an idea would be re-worked over and over (and over) again. This resulted in a collection of carefully crafted pop songs that reflect the bands mutual love for c86 jangle pop and early Flying Nun Records bands, with lyrical content drawing up themes that grapple with patriarchy and late stage capitalism; specifically the struggle to find personal autonomy within these social systems. EOn the 65th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, Shout It Out Loudcast Hall of Famer, Jeff Trott review the 1993 classic Hip-Hop album by Snoop Doggy Dogg, "Doggystyle." This is ARC's first Hip-Hop album review. The debut album from Snoop Doggy Dogg was highly anticipated after Snoop's appearance on Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" just one year earlier. The album was produced famously by Dr. Dre and was a breakthrough for G Funk style of Hip-Hop. The album features many contributions, including, Dr. Dre, Tha Dogg Pound, The D.O.C., Warren G, Nate Dogg, Daz, Korrupt, Lady Of Rage and more. The album went immediately to #1 US Billboard album charts and went on to become 4x Platinum and eventually selling 11 million albums worldwide. The album is known for the legendary rap skills of Snoop and the beats from Dre, which were revolutionary. The album catapulted Snoop Doggy Dogg into a super stardom celebrity status. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Zeus' pick. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow
Ritchie Blackmore is known as a guitar legend and as one of the more mercurial figures in rock. The Rock N Roll Hall Of Famer rose to power with Deep Purple and unleashed some of the most classic, hard rock riffs on the world, including the simple and ever-present Smoke On The Water. But Ritchie was known to be aloof, distant from his bandmates and would often fly into critical rages about their performance. After the departure of Ian Gillan and Roger Glover, he was dissatisfied with the musical direction of the band. However, once he saw a diminutive American singer opening for Purple in a band called Elf, he started to devise a way out of DP. That singer was Ronnie James Dio, the powerhouse lead vocalist who would eventually move on to replace Ozzy in Black Sabbath (and record two killer Sabbath albums, Heaven And Hell & Mob Rules) and fill arenas in the 80s with his own band, Dio. After recording what was supposed to be two sides of a single, Ritchie knew that Ronnie was his ticket out of Purple and onto his own project. So with his bandmates from Elf, they recorded Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow showcasing Ronnie and showing the world the Ritchie still had the goods. Songs like Man on the Silver Mountain and Snakecharmer are built on the power of Ronnie's soaring vocals and Ritchie's heavy riffs. But songs like Catch The Rainbow show an almost proggy, fantasy side of the band as well as Temple of the King and Sixteenth Century Greensleaves. Of course, before the first tour Ritchie fired or scared off the remaining members of Elf to replace them with Jimmy Bain and Cozy Powell which led to a triumphant Rising the next year. But to celebrate the real worldwide introduction of Ronnie James Dio (he appeared on albums with Elf but they received nowhere near the exposure of working with Blackmore) at 50, we reminisce on how we discovered Ronnie, Rainbow and it's legacy today. First Concert Memories #23: Jimi Hendrix with DJ Danny Meyers
As The Wolf & Action Jackson grew up throughout the 1980s and their taste for guitar driven rock music grew, the legend of Jimi Hendrix always loomed large. A left-handed virtuoso who blew away all the other guitar gods of his generation, Hendrix remains a legend more than 50 years after his death. When the boys created First Concert Memories to help capture and share true rock n roll stories, they hoped that one day they'd have someone on to talk about the legendary Jimi Hendrix. Thanks to DJ Danny Meyers of What's Hot In The Strip Clubs Podcast, they got a first hand account and are sharing it with the world! We go back to Friday, November 15, 1968 in Cincinnati, Ohio where we find a 13 year old Danny hanging out at his buddy's house. At some point, his buddy asks his dad if he'd take them to the Jimi Hendrix show at Cincinnati Gardens. Not only did his dad say yes but $20 got all four of them tickets, a soft drink and a dime for a phone call to come get them afterward. Soon the teenagers found themselves in front of the guitar legend, hoping that he would break his guitar on the stage at the end and waiting for their favorite, Purple Haze. Hear about the show, the boys quest to buy beer, the trials of attempting to get backstage and the atmosphere of the show. Danny also let's the guys in on life in the late 60s with no MTV, Creem magazine or internet to help them get to know the artists of the day. It's a great trip down memory lane with our Pantheon Podcasts brother!
