Only Three Lads: '80s Post-Punk Band Afterimage - Top 5 Perfect Album Sides
We recently covered the topic of "all killer, no filler" albums, but what about the perfect single side of a record? If the physical time and space limitations of a vinyl LP or a cassette must exist, why not do something compelling? Is it all poppycock...or cockypop?!? You make the call! Our Third Lad for this exploration is frontman/saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist Dan Voznick, aka Alec Tension from underground '80s post-punk band Afterimage. Referred to in the Los Angeles Times as "LA's Joy Division" back in the day, Afterimage created a sound that was hypnotic, skittery and chilly, but is also adventurous, playful and complex. The original lineup of the band (Alec Tension, A Produce, Rich Evac and Holland DeNuzzio) only stayed together for a couple of years and released a scant discography of one single ("Strange Confession"/"The Long Walk") and an EP (Fade In), both in 1981. Those original recordings, plus a generous helping of unreleased demos and live tracks, are now available from Independent Project Records on the new retrospective compilation Faces to Hide. Out now on double LP (available in both black and opaque white), special edition CD and digital formats, Faces to Hide proves as scathing, urgent, taut, angular and gripping as Afterimage’s scarce but unforgettable output must have sounded more than forty years ago. Packaged with extensive, career-spanning liner notes by noted journalist Richie Unterberger and previously unseen band photos, Faces to Hide also features Independent Project Records’ signature hand letterpress-printed custom design for the vinyl and CD packaging. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Metallica Live Night 2 in Nashville - Owners Suite!
The Wolf & Action Jackson are so happy to be able to share the story of Night 2 of Metallica in Nashville on Saturday, May 3. While the first night of the No Repeat Weekend was great, including the opening acts Suicidal Tendencies and Pantera, Saturday, May 3, 2025 was a special night in the boys lives as friends, fans and concert goers. Though their seats were solid on Thursday Night, the setlist wasn't white hot and the surroundings went downhill as the night progressed. However, through working some connections the boys were upgraded to a suite on Saturday night. And not just any suite, the Owners Suite - a double box on the 50 yard line, fully catered with an open bar, and easy chair seats that sat just back from the open windows. That experience alone would make it a special night. But the fact that there was a lightning strike within 8 miles of the stadium which necessitated clearing everyone out of their seats and off the field while delaying Metallica's set by more than 30 minutes, it made for a stress free night with great people. We shared stories with folks we'd just met, learned about the new rooftop stadium being built next door, got an early gander at the setlist and enjoyed Metallica themed cocktails until the boys came on around 9:30. Hear all about the odd and bloody openers Ice Nine Kills and how amped Fred Durst got the crowd during Limp Bizkit's set. The boys compare the setlists and favor Saturday's over Thursday's easily and, as a courtesy to Metallica, discuss how they would improve the setlist. Listen up for on stage banter from James Hetfield on a truly special night for 2 old metalheads. I'm In Love With That Song Podcast - Brown Acid
In this episode, we take a fascinating journey into the world of obscure Psych and Hard Rock from the 1970's with the "Brown Acid" series. Brown Acid is not just a collection of music; it represents a moment in time, a period that falls between the peace and love of the hippie era and the aggressive sounds of punk rock-- a vital documentation of a lost chapter in American music history. In this episode, you'll be treated to a selection of tracks from the series, showcasing the eclectic and often wild sounds that characterize the Brown Acid compilations. This unique series has been a labor of love for its creators, Daniel Hall and Lance Barresi, who have dedicated over ten years to unearthing rare tracks from the late '60's & '70's that have long faded into obscurity. As the 20th volume of the Brown Acid series has just been released, we take this occasion to explore the entire series and highlight some of Lance & Daniel's favorite tracks. Here's a list of the Brown Acid tracks played during this episode: Zeke - "Box" (Intro track) (Brown Acid Volume 1) Josefus - "Hard Luck" (Vol 1) Glass Sun - "Silence Of The Morning" (Vol 2) Factory - "Time Machine" (Vol 3) Summit - "The Darkness" (Vol 7) Attack - "School Daze" (Vol 8) Stonewall - "Outer Spaced" (Vol 9) Gary Del Vecchio - "Buzzin'" (Vol 13) Raven - "Raven Mad Jam" (Vol 14) White Lightning - "Under Screaming Double Eagle" (Vol 15) Brotherhood Of Peace - "Feel The Heat (In The Driver's Seat)" (Vol 16) Parchment Farm - "Songs Of The Dead" (Vol 18) Banana Bros - "Suck You In" (Vol 20) Luke & The Apostles "Not Far Off" (Outro track) (Vol 8) Explore & purchase the Brown Acid series here: https://ridingeasyrecs.com And check out the Permanent Records releases here: https://permanentrecordsla.com Learn more about your ad choices. Only Three Lads: Top 5 Rock Operas & Concept Albums
EThis week, we tackle the lofty, ambitious, sometimes bombastic topic of rock operas and concept albums. Most acknowledge that the rock opera was the outgrowth of the psychedelic era where, particularly in a post-Sgt. Pepper world, the rock n’ roll album became an artistic statement. As musicians sought to expand and alter the fabric of pop music, “rock operas” with narratives, character development, and distinct movements were being explored on records like the Pretty Things’ SF Sorrow (1968) and the Who’s Tommy (1969). All rock operas are concept albums, but not all concept albums are rock operas. The concept album is a collection of songs that are tied together to present an overarching theme, going back as far as Woody Guthrie's Dust Bowl Ballads, a 1940 collection of 78 rpm records that stayed true to the title. Joining us as our Third Lad for this discussion today is Dave Gebroe, the creator & host of the music obsessives’ podcast Discograffiti. Dave dives into amazingly deep and immaculately researched discussions on the catalogues of a wide range of artists - if not with the artist themselves, then with a jaw-dropping roster of guests. Dave is also a filmmaker, writing, producing and directing the movies The Homeboy and Zombie Honeymoon. If that weren’t enough, he’s masterminded a 2 LP tribute to-slash-reimagining of Lou Reed’s much maligned album Metal Machine Music, and I believe is working on a rock opera of his own. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Metallica Live in Nashville Night 1
Though The Wolf saw Metallica kickoff their 72 Seasons/No Repeat Weekend Tour in Amsterdam in 2023, Jackson was not able to join. In fact, Action Jackson hadn't seen Metallica live since 1993 when he, The Wolf and their buddies saw them in Naples during their sophomore year in college. As our show is on the same network, Patheon Podcasts, as The Metallica Report, we hoped we'd have the chance to see James, Lars, Kirk and Robert live together again one day. That day came on May 1 in Nashville as Metallica continues their unique and killer tour for a 3rd year and we descended upon Nashville to witness our heavy metal heroes live again together after 32 years. You'll want to hear Jackson's reaction to the stage setup on a beautiful night in Nashville. Suicidal Tendencies opened the night and got the crowd ready. However, it was a reformed Pantera featuring Zakk Wylde on guitar and Charlie Benante on the drums filling in for Dime and Vinny that we were really excited about and they did not disappoint. By the time Metallica came on, we were ready for them to blow us away and they delivered as they always do. We want to thank our long time listener Dex and his family for putting us up in their home - a very generous offer we're so happy we took them up on. And we want to thank the folks who crashed into the seats in front of us for reminding us that it takes all kinds to make up the Metallica Family and we're glad to be a part of it (and also glad we're not related to any of them). Night 2 was even better as we worked our way to the OWNERS SUITE but that show will be out on May 15 - so stay tuned!! Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew Episode 64 "Permanent Waves"
EOn the 64th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, rock journalist, author and fellow Pantheon podcaster, Martin Popoff review the 1980 classic album by Rush, "Permanent Waves" As we have stated before, Rush is known for its incredible musicianship with Geddy Lee on vocals and bass, Alex Lifeson on guitar and perhaps the greatest rock drummer of all time, Neil Peart. Permanent Waves finds Rush attempting to become mainstream and commercial. The album was once again produced by the band and Terry Brown. The album cover is another classic Rush cover done by Hugh Syme. The album features more accessible songs and some classic Rush progressive songs as well. The band also experimented with sounds and even some reggae. The album went to #4 US Billboard album charts and went on to become certified platinum. Songs like The Spirit Of Radio and Freewill became concert staples. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Tom's pick. Find out if Zeus still hates Rush or does Rush lovers Tom & Martin convince him that he's wrong. So grab your witch's broom and rock out! Only Three Lads: Simon Barber (UK indie pop legends The Chesterfields) - Top 5 Songs with Strings
Hey baby. Yeah, you know we're chill. We can keep this whole thing casual. No strings attached. Oops...sorry, wrong post. Because we totally have strings attached this week, as Simon Chesterfield (aka Simon Barber) from UK indie pop faves The Chesterfields joins us to discuss our Top 5 Songs with Strings. The use of strings in pop music has traditionally been to contribute texture and dimension to a record. In the context of rock bands, it often symbolizes musical sophistication, grandeur, and the ambition to break outside of the standard band format. It's all very timely too, because Simon has just released his first solo album, Simon Chesterfield, in which he re-imagines six of his compositions as orchestral performances. This gorgeous album was co-produced by Ben Scott Turner, Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey) and Simon, and was orchestrated by Charles Harrison. It is now out on digital platforms and on limited edition 10-inch vinyl from Legere Recordings. Simon Barber is the co-founder, ever-present member, bassist, songwriter, and vocalist of The Chesterfields. Their jangling, exciting sound made them fixtures on the UK indie charts - with albums like their debut Kettle (1987, #5) and 1988's Crocodile Tears (#10), and singles like "Completely and Utterly" (1986, #16), "Ask Johnny Dee" (1987, #4), "Goodbye, Goodbye" (1988, #10), and "Blame" (1988, #11). Nearly two decades after lead singer Dave Goldsworthy's tragic death, Simon led a new lineup of The Chesterfields (featuring Loft guitarist and past O3L guest Andy Strickland, Helen Stickland and Rob Perry) on their first new album in 27 years, the marvelous New Modern Homes. First Concert Memories #22: Ted Nugent with Jon Verno of Metal Mayhem ROC
EWe are happy to welcome our fellow Pantheon Podcast brother Jon Verno, host of Metal Mayhem ROC, to share his first EVER concert at the age of 13 - Ted Nugent live in Rochester, 1980. Hear Jon share what it was like as a brand new teenager to witness the sights, sounds and smells of his first ever live show and how it made an impression that has lasted to this day. Verno has seen hundreds, if not thousands, of shows over the years but you never forget your first. Nor do you forget the first time the lights come up and you see Ted Nugent in full force. You never forget the first time you inhaled the smell of pot wafting through the crowd. You always remember how cool the lights were, directing your attention to different parts of the stage. Dropped off by his older brother with a friend his age, he almost didn't make it to the show as a frisbee landed next to him which he immediately threw into the head of a biker. Also, Verno and his pal had no idea what an encore was so they were walking out when they heard the crowd cheering. Upon return they found Terrible Ted swinging like Tarzan around the stage, one of his signature 70s stage acts. As Verno was familiar with Ted's live album Great Gonzos, the setlist ripped into his favorites and left him desperate for more. These stories of innocence which turn to experience with the backdrop of a killer rock concert is exactly what we do on First Concert Memories, the monthly sidecast from your friends at The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Motley Crue - Theater of Pain
By 1985, Motley Crue were in a tough place. Though they'd achieved success, wealth and worldwide fame thanks to their first 2 albums Too Fast For Love and Shout At The Devil, the band were suffering from some setbacks. Vince Neil had driven his Ferrari while drinking and caused a crash that ended up killing his friend Razzle Dingley of Hanoi Rocks. As he worked to stay sober and navigate his legal issues, Nikki Sixx was deep into a heroin addiction that forced producer Tom Werman to get someone else in to rerecord his bass parts. But Shout At The Devil went 4x platinum and the record company needed a follow up to keep the band's momentum alive and in the public eye. The result was Theater of Pain, an album the band in later years has said was too polished and they blamed Tom Werman (not their own substance issues or limits as musicians) for the end product. However, it resonated with the public and sold another 4 million copies thanks to the big radio hits and MTV videos Smokin In The Boys Room (a Brownsville Station cover) and power ballad Home Sweet Home. Theater of Pain is less raunchy than Shout At The Devil, a byproduct of the slick production. We felt the riffs weren't as killer as they had been and outside of the big hits their aren't too many standouts. Louder Than Hell is a heavy song more akin to Black Sabbath than typical Motley but was from the Shout At The Devil sessions and doesn't sound like anything else on TOP. Use It Or Lose It might feature Mick Mars best solo shredding effort with typical cliche lyrics. But the songs had the Motley Crue attitude, had a couple of radio friendly hits and they toured for 8 months around the world to propel sales and keep themselves in the public eye. It may not be our favorite Crue record but it's the one that got our attention back in 1985 and we give it our track x track review at 40. Songfacts Podcast: Steve Bardwil | Interview
In this episode of Songfacts Podcast, we interview Steve Bardwil, who’s releasing his debut album Nothing But Time—a soulful, genre-blending record produced by 11-time Grammy winner Joe Chiccarelli. With tracks like “Wonder of It All,” Bardwil brings a reflective, heartfelt sound that’s clearly rooted in real experience. What makes his journey even more compelling is the path he took to get here. Before stepping into the studio, Steve spent over 20 years as chief counsel for Disney films, managing legal affairs for some of the biggest productions in Hollywood. But eventually, the pull of songwriting and storytelling took center stage. In this episode, we talk about the moment he knew it was time to leave the legal world behind, the process of creating his first album, and how an encounter with Jimmy Buffett inspired him to pursue his music career.
