We're getting all investigative this week as we address songs that cover the "5 W's" - who, why, when, where...and WUT! Yes, that's right, W-U-T. Because our Third Lad this week is the utterly delightful Tracey Vath, bassist from the Vancouver indie pop trio WUT! It is an episode full of joyous laughter, the top 10 Satanic bands, and a brand new O3L game - "Wut 'chu Talkin' About, Brett?!?" Oh, and what happened in Vegas apparently didn't stay in Vegas. Since 2018, Vancouver BC’s jangle-pop meets riot-twee trio WUT have been making a local name for themselves with their joyfully heartfelt live performances. In 2020, the trio released ‘NOW’, an energetic cassette accompanied by 10 DIY music videos. These earnest and often humorous videos reflect WUT’s playful yet sincere songwriting. Recently, WUT recorded ‘Mingling with the Thorns’, their sophomore full-length album, out now on HHBTM Records. ‘Mingling with the Thorns’ was created during two years of intermittent quarantines which caused guitarist Kaity McWhinney (Knife Pleats / Love Cuts), bassist Tracey Vath (Knife Pleats / Love Cuts), and drummer Lauren Smith (Tough Age / Jock Tears), to write songs independently, and share their ideas through countless emails, dropbox folders, and Google drives. Long periods of isolation were consumed by experimentation with different arrangements, and often an idea would be re-worked over and over (and over) again. This resulted in a collection of carefully crafted pop songs that reflect the bands mutual love for c86 jangle pop and early Flying Nun Records bands, with lyrical content drawing up themes that grapple with patriarchy and late stage capitalism; specifically the struggle to find personal autonomy within these social systems. Ritchie Blackmore is known as a guitar legend and as one of the more mercurial figures in rock. The Rock N Roll Hall Of Famer rose to power with Deep Purple and unleashed some of the most classic, hard rock riffs on the world, including the simple and ever-present Smoke On The Water. But Ritchie was known to be aloof, distant from his bandmates and would often fly into critical rages about their performance. After the departure of Ian Gillan and Roger Glover, he was dissatisfied with the musical direction of the band. However, once he saw a diminutive American singer opening for Purple in a band called Elf, he started to devise a way out of DP. That singer was Ronnie James Dio, the powerhouse lead vocalist who would eventually move on to replace Ozzy in Black Sabbath (and record two killer Sabbath albums, Heaven And Hell & Mob Rules) and fill arenas in the 80s with his own band, Dio. After recording what was supposed to be two sides of a single, Ritchie knew that Ronnie was his ticket out of Purple and onto his own project. So with his bandmates from Elf, they recorded Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow showcasing Ronnie and showing the world the Ritchie still had the goods. Songs like Man on the Silver Mountain and Snakecharmer are built on the power of Ronnie's soaring vocals and Ritchie's heavy riffs. But songs like Catch The Rainbow show an almost proggy, fantasy side of the band as well as Temple of the King and Sixteenth Century Greensleaves. Of course, before the first tour Ritchie fired or scared off the remaining members of Elf to replace them with Jimmy Bain and Cozy Powell which led to a triumphant Rising the next year. But to celebrate the real worldwide introduction of Ronnie James Dio (he appeared on albums with Elf but they received nowhere near the exposure of working with Blackmore) at 50, we reminisce on how we discovered Ronnie, Rainbow and it's legacy today. As The Wolf & Action Jackson grew up throughout the 1980s and their taste for guitar driven rock music grew, the legend of Jimi Hendrix always loomed large. A left-handed virtuoso who blew away all the other guitar gods of his generation, Hendrix remains a legend more than 50 years after his death. Thanks to DJ Danny Meyers of What's Hot In The Strip Clubs Podcast, they got a first hand account and are sharing it with the world! We go back to Friday, November 15, 1968 in Cincinnati, Ohio where we find a 13 year old Danny hanging out at his buddy's house. At some point, his buddy asks his dad if he'd take them to the Jimi Hendrix show at Cincinnati Gardens. Not only did his dad say yes but $20 got all four of them tickets, a soft drink and a dime for a phone call to come get them afterward. Soon the teenagers found themselves in front of the guitar legend, hoping that he would break his guitar on the stage at the end and waiting for their favorite, Purple Haze. Hear about the show, the boys quest to buy beer, the trials of attempting to get backstage and the atmosphere of the show. Danny also let's the guys in on life in the late 60s with no MTV, Creem magazine or internet to help them get to know the artists of the day. Waaaaay back in Episode 67 (Season 2), we discussed the albums from arguably THE most crucial year of the O3L era: the year two sevens clashed, 1977. It was such a fruitful, revolutionary time in music history that it's time we revisit some of the best records from '77. Our Third Lads this week are founding members Matt Piucci (guitar/vocals) and Steven Roback (bass/vocals) from one of the leading lights of the '80s Paisley Underground scene, Rain Parade. Along with guitarist David Roback (who would later form Opal and Mazzy Star), keyboardist/violinist Will Glenn and drummer Eddie Kalwa, Rain Parade's first album, 1983's Emergency Third Rail Power Trip remains one of the defining records of the Paisley Underground - an album that critic Jim DeRogatis would declare "...ranks with the best psychedelic rock efforts from any era." Shifting lineups (always anchored by Piucci and Roback) would produce the fantastic 1984 mini-LP Explosions in the Glass Palace and 1985's Crashing Dream - the latter of which has since been revealed as a souped up double LP reissue for Record Store Day on April 12, 2025! In 2012, Matt, Steven, and mid-80s guitarist John Thoman regrouped for live performances and new music. Now augmented by multi-instrumentalists Derek See and Mark Hanley, and Stephan Junca on drums, the current lineup has released 2023's full length Last Rays of a Dying Sun and the 2024 EP Last Stop on the Underground, both of which serve as vital reminders of why Rain Parade was - and is - so important and influential to legions of neo-psych, dream pop, and harmony-drenched jangle pop bands. https://rainparadelabel51.bandcamp.com Thanks to Josh Mills from It's Alive Media for the introduction and coordination. Frank Zappa is an odd duck. His massive back catalogue of albums attracts both reverence and ambivalence from music fans. Stylistically, he covered so much ground covering doo wop, blues, psych, jazz fusion and dissonant orchestral music. Unlike many of his rock and roll contemporaries, he always believed in infusing a sense of humour into his music – both compositionally and lyrically….though since what strikes some as funny is so subjective, it couldn’t appeal to everyone. He wrote about commercialism in America, the hypocrisy of conservatives and liberals in American society, and….umm….body parts. Welcome to episode 127 of See Hear Podcast. Tim, Kerry and I pontificate about the work of Frank Zappa with an eye towards his 1972 film, 200 Motels. It’s a surreal work that’s supposed to be his take on what life on the road is like for a working band – encountering rednecks and groupies, band egos and paranoia (the latter for good reason in this instance), and drug use. The film is vignette based with music provided by the 2nd incarnation of the Mothers of Invention and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Zappa spent 4 years composing and arranging the music, and much less time writing a script. That works out as well as expected. As well as discussing 200 Motels, we put the background towards its creation in context, thanks to an excellent documentary called “Frank Zappa – Free Jazz, Movie Madness & Another Mothers”(available on Tubi). Many thanks to Tom Stein for making us aware of that film’s existence. If our discussion goes all over the place, maybe it’s a tribute to the structure of 200 Motels. In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we’re looking at the clash between music and The Man diving into times when the FBI investigated musicians. In 1956, J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI created a covert and legally questionable program called COINTELPRO with the goal of disrupting groups that the Feds considered to be subversive – communists, black nationalists, feminists, anti Vietnam protestors, civil rights activists. Considering the role that music played in the 60s and 70s, it was only a matter of time before the FBI started investigating rock and roll. Some of the stories are silly. Picture this, it’s 1963 and a bunch of FBI agents are hunched over a record player listening to Louie Louie over and over – forwards and backwards – desperately searching for dirty lyrics that didn’t exist. And others are more serious. In 1972, the FBI put John Lenon under surveillance and wiretapped his phone because President Nixon was afraid that his stance on the Vietnam War would influence young voters. The government started proceedings to deport him. Over the decades, the FBI has investigated or kept tabs on all sorts of musicians. Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison; folk singers Pete Seeger and Woodie Guthrie; Aretha Franklin, the Monkees, NWA, Charles Mingus, the Insane Clown Posse, and more. By 1975, Fleetwood Mac had already had many iterations and lineups. Started by veterans of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, early Fleetwood Mac were a blues based band with limited success on the US Billboard chart. By 1975, they had lost their main singer, lead guitarist and main songwriter in Bob Welch and remaining members Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood were on the search for a spark. While working at Sunset Studios, they heard the debut album from a duo that was also a couple, Buckingham Nicks. Though at first they were interested in hiring on Lindsey Buckingham as their singer and guitarist, they soon found out that he would only join if they took his singer/songwriter girlfriend Stevie Nicks as well. The rest is pop/rock history as the 1975 product of the five piece, Fleetwood Mac, would go on to sell over 7 million copies in the US alone. Now with three lead singers/songwriters in the band, they could choose the best of the best for inclusion on the record. While the choices for singles didn't always make sense (Warm Ways was the 1st UK single, World Turning wasn't released as a single), the chemistry did and the world heard harmonies that were unknown before. While Christine McVie held her own with lilting love songs (Warm Ways, Over My Head, Say You Love Me), Lindsey Buckingham offered more upbeat rockers like Monday Morning and the brooding So Afraid. However, the real star in the making was Stevie Nicks who turned the album's and the band's fortunes with her all-time classic Rhiannon. It really introduced the world to Stevie Nicks and the power she possessed in her voice and songwriting. She also offered the sweet Landslide, another track on this album that would go on to be a rock radio staple and part of their live show. The success of Fleetwood Mac gave them the opportunity to release Rumours in 1977, an album that would sell over 40 million copies worldwide. But this album laid the groundwork for Rumours and all the future success for the band for the next 50 years. The 1980s saw an explosion of independent record labels across the US, shaping the sound and spirit of underground music to this day. This week, Daniel House from Skin Yard and C/Z Records joins us as we dive into some of the finest labels whose DIY ethos, fearless experimentation, and raw energy broke away from the corporate music machine. One of the crucial American indie labels of the era was C/Z Records, the Seattle imprint that will forever be remembered as the second most important label in the burgeoning grunge scene. That being said, it was C/Z, not Sub Pop, who released the defining document of the new sound of the Pacific Northwest with 1986's Deep Six compilation - introducing Soundgarden, The Melvins, U-Men, Green River, Malfunkshun, and Skin Yard. Founded in 1985 by Chris Hanzek and Tina Casale, Skin Yard bassist Daniel House took over operation of C/Z in 1987, subsequently releasing music by Nirvana, Henry Rollins, Built To Spill, The Gits, Hammerbox, Presidents of the United States of America, 7 Year B---h, Coffin Break and many more. Skin Yard was a foundational band in the development of the grunge movement, not only due to the groundbreaking music they recorded between 1985 - 1991, but also the band members' other contributions to Seattle music. Aside from the aforementioned impact that House made with C/Z Records, guitarist Jack Endino would go on to produce and engineer some of the most enduring records of the era - including Nirvana's Bleach, and music by Mudhoney, Tad, Soundgarden, L7, and Screaming Trees. Lead singer Ben McMillan would form the band Gruntruck, and sadly passed away in 2008 at the age of 46. Drummer Matt Cameron is a world class musician who has been behind the kit for Soundgarden and, for the past 25 years, with Pearl Jam. Skin Yard Select is the brand new, limited collection of 14 songs loving curated by Daniel House and Jack Endino, culling tracks from their four studio albums, but also featuring enough rarities to please long-time fans. By 1985, REM had carved out a following both in their home base of Athens, GA and at colleges and indie radio stations around the US. Their first two albums Murmur and Reckoning gave them a foothold as they learned how to craft songs and play live. But they were ready to take the next step so instead of retreating to North Carolina where they'd recorded their first two albums, they went to London to broaden their horizons and up their songwriting and recording game. Because REM had grown into a solid live band, some songs were worked out on the road like their classic travel song Driver 8. But they also sought inspiration from some of the odd characters they encountered in Athens and around the South with songs like Wendell Gee, Life And How To Live It and Old Man Kensey. They also drew from their travels to create some great road songs like Can't Get There From Here, Maps & Legends and Feeling Gravity's Pull. Guitarist Peter Buck does his jangly best here while breaking out a little banjo in spots. Mike Mills not only locks down the bass but provides harmonies and counterpoints to Michael Stipes desperate and personal lyrics. This album would portend the next two REM records - Life's Rick Pageant and Document - both favorites of The Wolf. While the band would go onto become multi-platinum international pop superstars in the 90s, this album saw the band not ready to become that big but ready to take the next step in their journey.
