Ugly American Werewolf in London: Live Aid at 40 - Part 1
ELive Aid may have been the cultural event for Gen X'ers just as Woodstock was for their baby boomer parents. Bob Geldof had led a group of British pop artists to the charity single Do They Know It's Christmas? That inspired US artists to create We Are The World. Both singles were to aid millions of starving people in Africa who were suffering from severe drought and broken politics. The huge success of the songs lead Geldof to be even more ambitious in coordinating a dual continent live concert with the biggest stars of the day (and with some legends as well) to raise money for Africa. On July 13, 1985 artists gathered in Wembley Stadium in London and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia and MTV broadcast 15 hours of programming which we ate up! Though a million things could have gone wrong, the day was an amazing event that raised money and awareness for a dire situation and brought together the most incredible lineup of talent. This is the first of 3 parts commemorating this incredible event. Here we'll breakdown how the singles came together, who came, who didn't, controversies and legacy. We name all the acts on both coasts before breaking down the UK performances before the US feed was piped into the UK. Part 2 will have the primetime acts from the UK and the US and we discuss the now infamous Led Zeppelin performance. But we're really excited about Part 3 which will feature interviews from 2 folks who were in Philadelphia that day - one of whom was an MTV VJ!! Viewed by 1.5 billion people around the world, the MTV broadcast in the US is so memorable for The Wolf and Action Jackson, we couldn't wait to reminisce about it. Talking to one of the original MTV VJs was a dream come true! But that's Part 3, for now listen to our excitement building up to the event, how we snuck off to watch it and the acts stood out early in the broadcast. Love That Album - Bonus Episode - First Episode Redux - Bruce Springsteen "Wild Innocent" vs "Darkness"
In July 2011 (14 years ago as I write this), I recorded episode 1 of Love That Album podcast. The period wasn't ground zero for podcasts, but it was still early days, and people were still asking, “What's a podcast?” At the time, there seemed to be very little in the way of music discussion shows, so I decided to create one of my own to talk about music in the same way film podcasters of the time that I enjoyed discussed films. So.....ahh....welcome to episode 1 of Love That Album – Redux. I asked Melbourne music journalist Jeff Jenkins to join me, and we had a debate over which was the better Bruce Springsteen album: The Wild, The Innocent & The E-Street Shuffle or Darkness On The Edge of Town. Lengthy and poetic songs versus short and concise ones. I thought the conversation was good, but I didn't even use a proper microphone, so the sound quality was awful. I used the laptop mic and we had all the ambient noise of the room. I didn't do any editing to speak of. It's a mess. BUT I enjoyed the conversation and the process of podcasting. It meant that I had a regular means of speaking to interesting people about music...something I didn't have in my daily life – at least not to the extent I wanted. So, here we are in the mess of planet Earth in 2025. In recent times, software has been developed to clean up audio in a way we couldn't imagine. It's not just available for the likes of Peter Jackson. I had the idea to see what would happen if I ran episode 1 through the software....and to my amazement, Jeff and I sounded like we were in a proper studio with decent mics. So, following that revelation, I decided to edit the show in the same fashion I've been doing over the last few years, and put it out there for you to listen to. I thought for 5 minutes of going back to all the early episodes whose editing and sound quality grate on my nerves, but my son convinced me otherwise. He said, “don't do a George Lucas....the show evolved, and you don't want to deny its history”. I thought about it and realised he was 100% right. So what you have here is one of two episodes I'm giving the cleaning-up treatment to (the other one will be out sometime later this year).....everything otherwise stays up as it is – even the original episode 1. This is here just as an exercise on what the start could have been in 2011. Podcasting was still the domain of mostly people like me with the passion to present ideas, but without any ideas as to how to present them. I'm proud of how it started and where the show has gone. Tune in if you've never heard the episode before....or even if you have and felt pity for my approach. If you’ve been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. If you don't enjoy the show, tell your adversaries to tune in. We don't care who listens..... Love That Album is proudly part of the Pantheon Network of music podcasts. First Concert Memories #24: Rush with Brad Page of I'm In Love With That Song Podcast
Longtime listeners know that The Wolf & Action Jackson hava a special place in their hearts for Rush, the Canadian power trio that went through many phases and sounds over their more than 4 decades together. To wrap up our 2nd year of First Concert Memories, our monthly sidecast about special moments in our lives that revolve around a live rock show, we welcomed our Pantheon Podcasts brother Brad Page. Brad grew up in greater Boston and tried to see Rush on the Permanent Waves Tour. However, after he and his friends trekked over 2 hours to Cape Cod for the show, at the last second it was cancelled. Brad was worried that he'd never get to see one of his very favorite bands live. However, that was actually good fortune in that the boys made up the date during a brief tour between Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures that saw the band debut some of the stuff they were working on. Those songs turned out to be Limelight and Tom Sawyer off the forthcoming Moving Pictures, the album that would change the fortunes of Rush forever. Brad tells us how he and his buddies freaked out when Geddy announced they'd be playing something new. But he also remembers hearing some of his all time favorites like Xanadu and the inimitable La Villa Strangiato. The setlist was phenomenal and the venue was smaller than any of the others from that brief tour between major album tours. So Brad saw the greatest setlist, a killer stage production and heard the debut of a couple of stone cold Rush classics before they went back in the studio to finish them. It's a fun story of a night for which we wish we'd been there. The Vinyl Relics Podcast EPYSODE 44 (pt. 1): "Back To The Egg"
EPYSODE 44 (pt. 1). Guest: Wings' guitarist Laurence Juber. Rules are meant to be broken. I couldn't help myself. I know I said that I would be featuring "under-the-radar" types of albums on this show. So why am I featuring an album that sold 4 million copies, won a grammy, and whose bandleader just so happens to be Sir Paul McCartney?!? 'Cuz I love this one!! Many critics (and some fans) have a different opinion of this record. These are the people I like to call...wrong. "Back To The Egg" has divided music listeners for over 4 decades now. With some wonderful commentary from Wings' guitarist Laurence Juber, we break down the songs to explain why this really is a fantastic album. Only Three Lads: Top 5 Songs by Lilith Fair Artists, with Author Sarah Seltzer ('The Singer Sisters')
EThis week, we celebrate songs from the amazing roster of female artists who were a part of the Lilith Fair touring festival during its run between the summers of 1997 and 1999. The Lilith Fair was co-founded by Canadian songstress Sarah McLachlan after experiencing woes with concert promoters booking female artists and battling general sexism in the music business. Taking its name from the Jewish biblical origin story that Lilith was Adam’s first wife who refused to bow down to his every whim, the Lilith Fair became a huge success, highlighting a rotating lineup of talent at every stop. Joining us for this discussion is Sarah Seltzer, longtime executive editor at Lilith Magazine and now the author of her first novel, The Singer Sisters, on Flatiron Books (the Little Brown Book Group in the UK). About The Singer Sisters: It's 1996, and alt-rocker Emma Cantor is on tour, with her sights trained on a record deal. Emma's got no lack of inspiration for her confessional songs, chief among them her mother Judie, a 1960s folk legend who is bitterly disappointed by Emma's choice to skip college. Emma is baffled by Judie's coldness. Judie herself was only eighteen when she ran away to New York to pursue music, ahead of forming the influential folk duo the Singer Sisters with her sister Sylvia. But Judie has a long-kept secret about why she abandoned her music career at the peak of her success, which is about to unravel. This is an epic family saga that follows mother Judie and daughter Emma as they navigate the ups and downs of music stardom - asking what women artists must sacrifice for success. As they discuss the music, the Imbalanced Boys also identify future sonic signatures, in early recordings, that led to their massive, and continuing, success! There's focus on Robert Smith, the central, and sole continuous figure in the group, as part of the telling of the story. We considered a shotgun 5 Favorites, but thought, maybe we can do that in our next episode about The Cure! Weigh in on the comments section on Spotify, or on Facebook! Ep 186Love That Album - Interview with Cary Baker about the book "Down On The Corner: Adventures In Busking And Street Music"
It's been said that the mark of a great city is how it promotes the arts. Thinking specifically about busking or street performing, some cities actively encourage musicians to perform in parks, streets, and other outdoor surrounds. THAT is a town devoted to the arts. Welcome to episode 186 of Love that Album. Cary Baker is a native of Chicago who has had a great career in music publicity and has worked with some of the most well known bands in the US during his stint at IRS and Capitol records. However, his passion has always been with those musicians who performed on street corners or at markets. He's written a great new book called Down On The Corner: Adventures in Busking and Street Music. He tells a bit about his own origins with buskers and how that led to much of the work that followed. Many famous artists started out as buskers before gaining popularity in the more conventional spheres of the music loving world. The vast majority of busking musicians, however, continue to perform for years on city streets, with that being the means to an end. Cary's book is American-centric with a little bit of a look “across the pond” as Americans call it, but it's still a fascinating look at the stories behind musicians you know and many you don't. Cary joins me to tell some of the stories from the book as well as his own origins at Maxwell Street Market in Chicago.. We had a great conversation. This could have gone for a couple of hours, but time didn't allow for it, but I really love what's there, and hope you do too. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Iron Maiden Live in Stockholm X2 - Run For Your Lives Tour
EWhen Iron Maiden announced they'd be doing the Run For Your Lives Tour in 2025-26, The Wolf & Action Jackson knew they would have to go see a couple of shows. And when there were only European dates announced for 2025, they knew they needed to dust off their passports because there was no way they would be able to wait 2 years to see the boys on what could be their biggest and best (perhaps last?) greatest hits tour ever. So they chose Stockholm as their European venue because 1) They'd never been to Sweden and 2) Iron Maiden played 2 nights there. Plus the Wolf Cub had been promised by her father that he'd take her to see Maiden in Europe once she was old enough (but was she? Swedish authorities didn't think so but we came up with a work-around). Stockholm was an enchanting land full of beautiful people and a packed house full of Iron Maiden fans for 2 nights of heavy metal classics. We were revved up by Lzzy Hale and Halestorm who held their own on the stage and then treated to the best setlist The Wolf has seen in 30 years of seeing the band live. As The Wolf marked his 9th and 10th IM shows, they were the first without Nicko McBrain on the drums as the band introduced Simon Dawson to the family (though most knew him from Steve Harris' side project British Lion). Besides the Eddies who came out to have fun with the band, the real show was the new video screen behind the stage and on the amplifiers. It set the backdrop for the song like showing the Eiffel Tower during Murders in the Rue Morgue or a creepy graveyard for Fear of the Dark. But they also created some more interactive movies for epics like Rhime of the Ancient Mariner and Hallowed Be Thy Name. While the boys played lights out, the screen enhanced the experience and understanding of the lyrics for folks from the front row to the back of the house. Two truly magic nights in Stockholm which only left us wondering when (and where) would we see our heavy metal heroes again. EPYSODE 43: "Turn On The Music Machine". Guest: Music Machine guitarist Mark Landon. This week on Vinyl Relics, we dive deep into the dark, fuzz-drenched grooves of "Turn On The Music Machine", the 1966 debut album from proto-punk pioneers The Music Machine. Known for their all-black attire and snarling, hypnotic sound, The Music Machine helped define the garage rock era with hits like “Talk Talk” and “The People In Me.” In this special epysode, we’re joined by guest Mark Landon, the band’s original guitarist, who shares exclusive behind-the-scenes stories from the recording sessions, insights into the band’s creative process, and what it was like to be part of one of the most influential — and underrated — acts of the ‘60s. Songfacts Podcast | Eric Bass of Shinedown
Eric Bass has spent the last 15 years shaping the sound of Shinedown, not just as their bassist, but as the producer behind their albums Attention Attention and Planet Zero. Now with his solo album I Had a Name , he brings us a sprawling, cinematic solo debut that marks a major shift. Written, performed, and produced entirely by Eric, the album is a dystopian concept record that plays like a rock opera, charting the story of a nameless hero on a surreal journey of identity and resistance. It’s also tied to a graphic novel that expands the universe he’s built. Eric opens up about the creative risks, personal revelations, and sonic experimentation that shaped I Had a Name, breaks down key tracks like “Mind Control” and “Azalia,” talks about Shinedown's unexpected musical collaboration with Sylvester Stallone, and more in this episode. Only Three Lads: Top 5 Shoegaze Albums of the '90s (with Alan D. Boyd from Movieland)
EYeah, we'll make the same disclaimer we made the last time we talked about shoegaze. We know the term is polarizing. We realize that it was coined by the press as a term of derision for what had previously been known as "the scene that celebrates itself." Legend has it that writer Andy Ross first used it in a Sounds review to describe how Moose singer/guitarist Russell Yates was constantly looking down at the lyrics he had taped to the floor and/or his guitar pedals. But, face it, you hear the term and you know exactly what it is...ethereal vocals, woozy melodies, ear-piercingly loud, effects-laden guitars, all awash in a psychedelic haze. Nowadays, the bands that play this kind of music wear the "shoegaze" badge with pride. But the O.G.s had to walk so you could run, kids. Hence, this week we are celebrating some of the great shoegaze albums of the 1990s. Joining us is the singer/songwriter/guitarist of '90s Vancouver cult shoegazers Movieland, Alan D. Boyd. Movieland has been honored with the first installment of an archival series from 604 Decades that takes a look back at Vancouver's rich, if unexplored arts history. This rarities and demos collection, Then & Now, proves that they should have been at the top of the marquee during their time. https://movieland1990.bandcamp.com/album/then-now After Movieland disbanded in 1994, Alan moved to the UK, and has enjoyed a long career as an acclaimed composer for TV ("Day of the Triffids") and film ("Four Strings Good"), as well performing in the folk trio Little Sparta (also featuring Susie Honeyman from the Mekons). As you would expect during an episode on shoegaze, we divert our attention to Canadian pop stars, the other Movielands, and have a rare (maybe the first time?) double Triple Crossover! Ep 129See Hear Podcast Episode 128 - Interview with Francois Girard about "Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould"
There’s a moment in Mel Brooks’ “History of the World Part 1” where we’re told that shortly after the first artists came the first art critics…..I’ll leave you to determine what happens…. The music world is certainly not short of people with opinions in regards to others’ ability to perform and provide nuance to the work they present for us as music lovers to listen to. In the classical world, interpretation of the canon of baroque, classical, romantic and modernist music can be a mystery to some of us who are not classically trained musicians. There’s no shortage of classical soloists who’ve captured the wider public’s imagination, yet have their critics as well. Welcome to episode 128 of See Hear Podcast. Glenn Gould is regarded as one of the great pianists of the 20th century, known in particular for his love of and heavy focus on the composition of J.S. Bach. However, he wasn’t unanimously revered. Pianist Alfred Brendel was vocally not a fan. Even Leonard Bernstein who did love Gould’s approach covered himself before a TV broadcast of a Brahms piano concerto by saying Gould’s approach was not going to be for everybody. Therein lies the heart of the matter – when you depart from an accepted orthodox style of playing of the canon, you’re going to upset people. Glenn Gould upset some people. BUT….the reason he is still being talked about was for what he DID, not what he didn’t do. He’s most famous for his first and last released recordings, Bach’s Goldberg Variations (1955 and 1981). Even there his recordings are wildly different, and the latter upset some who championed the earlier recording. He’s also remembered for his intellect and could discuss may other issues outside of music – something he did on radio and TV specials. In 1993, film director Francois Girard released a brilliant biopic / documentary called “Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould”. Like its subject, the film takes a wildly different approach from the accepted norm of musician biopic. As the name implies, the film comprises of 32 shorts featuring narratives, interviews, performance and experimentation that provide a strong sense of Gould’s character. There is a 3 act structure, but not in the usual way that you get in a conventional musician biography. June 2025 sees the reissue of the film by Criterion, and I was thrilled to welcome Francois to the podcast to talk about this film and Gould in general. Unfortunately, we couldn’t coordinate the timing to have Tim or Kerry available, but I still had a fascinating conversation with Francois that I hope you find illuminating.
