Ep 187Love That Album - Steeleye Span "Commoners Crown"
It’s well known that the 1960s had seen a revival of interest in the US and the UK in folk music – most particularly in its crossover to more contemporary styles. In the UK, traditional folk music preservation, academia and performance had long been part of the culture, but by the 1960s it seems there was conflict between those who wanted to play the music “authentically” (thus ignoring that folk songs had always evolved over the centuries), those who wanted to play those songs in a more contemporary fashion, and (shock horror) those who wanted to compose NEW songs in an accepted folk style. Welcome to episode 187 of Love That Album podcast. While there were many groups in the UK who were a part of the folk-rock scene starting in the 1960s, the three most famous were Fairport Convention, Pentangle and Steeleye Span. It seems that group memberships had something of a revolving door policy with many leaving one to join another when musical ideologies weren’t being met. Ashley Hutchings had become dissatisfied with the direction that Fairport was headed, and formed Steeleye Span. Span themselves went through several lineup and sound changes before arriving at its accepted classic lineup for their sixth LP, Now We Are Six. The focus of this LTA is album number 7, released in 1975, Commoner’s Crown. I am joined once again by the co-host of the superb Only Three Lads podcast, Brett Vargo. He is a man of many musical passions, and one of them is the English folk scene of that 60s / 70s period. I discovered you can’t have a proper discussion on Span (or maybe other folk groups as well) without talking about the Child Ballads. I need to give credit to Nate Wilcox of the wonderful Let It Roll podcast who drew my attention to the existence of the Child Ballads through his show. It’s a shame our recording schedules couldn’t align for him to join us, but hopefully somewhere down the track Nate will be back on LTA. Brett and I discuss some Steeleye Span history, Frances Child’s contribution to the folk and rock repertoire, murder, infidelity, drugs and theft – all folk subject staples. The folk repertoire is so much about story-telling, so we delve into the origins of some of these songs, how the stories changed over the centuries to the point of Steeleye Span recording, and the musicianship and vocal arrangements on Commoner’s Crown…..oh and we discuss about how Hercules Grytpype-Thynne dropped by to play some ukelele. My huge gratitude goes to Brett for providing his insight to this music and time to the show. Only Three Lads is an essential podcast listen. Every week, Brett and Uncle Gregg bring in incredible musician guests from the golden age of alternative music to discuss not only their own work, but to help count down a top 5 of whatever the given subject may be. Only Three Lads: Smoking Popes' Josh Caterer - Top 5 Albums of 1995
From Britpop to Beanie Babies, 1995 was da bomb! So much so, in fact, that we thought it would be pretty phat if we revisited the albums of the year in a Volume 2 episode. As if! This week's Third Lad, singer/songwriter/guitarist Josh Caterer had a pretty memorable 1995 as well. His Chicago pop-punk band Smoking Popes signed a major label deal with Capitol Records, who re-released their second indie album, Born To Quit. The album featured the alternative smash "Need You Around," which received radio and MTV airplay, as well as a prominent placement in the hit film Clueless. Fast forward 30 years and things are once again heating up for Smoking Popes. They've just released a triumphant new album, Lovely Stuff, and are celebrating three decades of Born To Quit by playing the record live in its entirety this spring. This summer, they will embark on a tour with Bayside. https://smokingpopesmusic.com Josh joined us from a random rest stop somewhere in Florida to chat about '95 albums, the Popes' past, present, and future, hangin' out in Billie Joe Armstrong's basement, getting Morrissey's seal of approval, the pros and cons of sudden fame, faith, Wisconsin, and much more. Play That Rock n' Roll: Interview w/ GARY GRAFF (Editor of "501 ESSENTIAL ALBUMS OF THE '80s")
This is Play That Rock n' Roll's interview with Gary Graff, editor of "501 ESSENTIAL ALBUMS OF THE '80s: The Music Fan's Definitive Guide"! In this conversation, we talk about some of the major musical trends of the ‘80s and how Gary felt about them in his early days as a music journalist. And since we had both recently seen Devo on their current tour, Gary shares his review of that show. From there, we dive in on some Classic Rock selections that he wrote the reviews for, specifically albums from Genesis, Steve Winwood, Toto, Night Ranger, Alice Cooper, among others. We also discuss why so many ‘60s artists had comebacks in the ‘80s, and of course I had to ask him about what Bob Seger was up to in that era. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Eric Clapton - Behind The Sun Reboot with Guitar Tech Lee Dickson
EIn a first for us hear at The Wolf, we're rebooting a previous episode with cool, never before heard material. On Episode 221 we did our usual track by track, in-depth analysis of Eric Clapton's Behind The Sun as it turned 40. It was a bit of a return to form for Clapton after he had worked to clean himself up and went platinum after some less than stellar albums in the early 80s. Still, songs She's Waiting and Forever Man turned out to be solid hits for Eric. Warner Brothers wanted the album to be a hit so they employed the hottest man in the business at the time, Phil Collins, to take Eric and his band down to Montserrat to put together a hit. However, Warner wasn't thrilled with the results so they had Eric come to LA to cover some songs written by Jerry Lynn Williams with some of the best session musicians of the day (and of all time). Eric's longtime guitar tech, Lee Dickson, has appeared on our show a couple of times before including on Ep 242 with Alan Hunter of MTV talking about Live Aid from Philadelphia. Lee gives us some color on how things went down in Montserrat, how a young producer almost ruined a six figure Martin guitar, how Sting popped up to say hello and contribute to the sessions and how Lee taught himself to swim while everyone else was at the beach. He also sheds some light on the LA sessions that Ted Templeman oversaw and how psyched Clapton was to work with some of the world's best session musicians like Steve Lukather, Greg Phillinganes and eventual member of his touring band, Nathan East. Lee tells a hilarious story about working with songwriter Jerry Lynn Williams and the character he was. Lee talks about the cool stuff they did making the album, we offer our track by track review including songs from the sessions that didn't make the album (one track made it into Back To The Future) and at the end he gives some inside information on what he does to make his artists sound incredible and life in rock n roll. It's a special edition we think you'll love. Vinyl Relics Epysode 45 (part 1): "Hollywood Dream" by Thunderclap Newman
EPYSODE 45 (pt. 1): "Hollywood Dream". Guest: Mark Wilkerson, author of "Hollywood Dream: The Thunderclap Newman Story". If you can't beat 'em...ask 'em to be on your show. I thought I was the only Thunderclap Newman fanatic (Thunderhead? Newmanhead??). When I came up with the ingenious idea of interviewing Pete Townshend, my theory was that he was probably so sick of answering the same old questions about The Who and his solo career that he would welcome chatting about this band that he put together and the album he produced. Turns out, I was right. Little did I know however that someone else was already talking to Pete about this very subject, and was delving deep to uncover the story of this almost forgotten band. Who better than to have on the show then the guy Pete says "knows more about Thunderclap Newman than I do". This epysode dives into the story of the unlikely characters that make up this utterly unique band, their fascinating album and the amazing journey author Mark Wilkerson took to write his compelling book. In this deep-dive conversation, acclaimed author and Grateful Dead historian Dennis McNally joins the show to discuss his monumental book, The Last Great Dream. Only Three Lads: Harvey Danger's Evan Sult - Top 5 Albums with Super Awesome Drumming!
EThe title says it all: This week, we celebrate albums with super awesome drumming with Third Lads Evan Sult and Dave Eastman from The Open Flames! Evan Sult is the super awesome drummer behind Harvey Danger and their '90s alt-rock classic 'Flagpole Sitta' (c'mon, you know you've played air drums to it before). Plus, Harvey Danger's underrated second album, King James Version, got the deluxe vinyl treatment for its 25th anniversary on Record Store Day in April! Evan Sult and Paige Brubeck (who also make up the duo Sleepy Kitty) and bassist Len Bendel joined forces with singer/songwriter/guitarist extraordinaire Dave Eastman to form the literate pop noir band The Open Flames. Their new debut album, Same Time Next Year, rides a wild wave from crescendo to crescendo. Dave's novelist's eye tells narratives that he and co-vocalist Paige embody as characters which the band explodes into cinematic color via Evan's powerful drums, Paige and Len's inventive basslines, and a full spectrum of distorted guitar tones and harmonies. Same Time Next Year is out now on Subjangle: https://theopenflames.bandcamp.com Dave also treats O3L listeners to an exclusive live acoustic version of the album track 'My Birthday'. Oh, and did we mention it's super awesome?!? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ugly American Werewolf in London: Alan Hunter & Eric Clapton Guitar Tech Lee Dickson Interviews on Live Aid at 40
EYou might ask boys - if you've already done two 1+ hour episodes on Live Aid at 40, what more could you possibly have left for a third? The only thing we left out of episodes 1 & 2 were first hand accounts from the front or back of the stage that day, something we weren't privy to at the time due to the fact that we were 12 years old. So we enlisted two folks who there that day to help tell the real story - MTV VJ Alan Hunter and longtime Eric Clapton guitar tech Lee Dickson. Alan was one of the original 5 MTV VJs with Nina Blackwood, Martha Quinn, Mark Goodman and JJ Jackson. Alan was in Philadelphia that day as the stage boiled at close to 100 degrees. That made for a long day (18 hours on the air?) surrounded by legends and the hottest acts of the time. Alan tells what it was like to walk backstage among the many luminaries who were around that day, how he handled juggling being on MTV at the front of the stage to running backstage for interviews. And yes, he does discuss his much talked about interview with Phil Collins and the surviving members of Led Zeppelin after their infamous performance. A dream come true for a couple MTV kids to interview one of their heroes! LIsteners of the show know the Lee Dickson is full of humor and stories from his decades in the rock business. He's cavorted with the aristocracy of rock n roll and is entertaining in the way that he shares these tales from the road. He sets the record straight on how he handled Marshall amps that day while trying to find the right one for Eric and relates a story of how his plan to create a beautiful effect for the TV audience was thwarted by crazy roadies and stagehands. Lee also lets us know how you could cool off in the synthesizer room and find refreshment. It's a great view behind the scenes you won't find anywhere else and we think you'll love Lee's humorous delivery of his wild tales. July 13, 2025 marks the 40th anniversary of this extraordinary day in rock music, MTV and the lives of The Wolf & Action Jackson so we're releasing this special episode on that day to commemorate the extraordinary event. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Live Aid at 40 Part 2 - The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
EWelcome to Part 2 of our deep dive into Live Aid as it turns 40. In Part 1 we spoke about the creation and buildup to the event on July 13, 2025 at Wembley Stadium in London and JFK in Philly. It was billed as a legendary fundraiser to support starving people in Africa organized by Bob Geldof which attracted some of the greatest artists of several generations. On our second installment, we break down the live acts throughout the day in the US and during the prime afternoon and evening times in the UK. While some stand out fo incredible performances (The Wolf was partial to Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders among them), some top of the charts performers hit some bad notes (yes, we're going there). And of course, we discuss the infamous Led Zeppelin reunion and interview with Alan Hunter. Part 3 will be released July 13, 2025 to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Live Aid. We are excited about 2 interviews with people who were at the stage in Philadelphia that day, including one of the original MTV VJs. Prisoners of Rock and Roll -- Hair Metal Meltdown: The Bands Killed By Grunge
EToday, we’re diving into the unrelenting collapse of hair metal empire. A music scene that crashed harder than Vince Neil's drunk driving accident killed Razzle Dingley. Sure, bands like Def Leppard, Motley Crue, and Poison are still out on the road, playing for nostalgic crowds of people who yearn to hear those power chords. But for every one of those groups that are still selling merch and playing gigs, there are several who were wiped off the board in the early 90s by Seattle’s flannel fury. Grunge was a raw, authentic sound and anti-establishment ethos that rejected hair metal’s polished production, spandex, and power ballads. But we still love that music about girls and having a good time. It's as America as any other movement in music In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we’re looking at the bands who didn’t survive the hair metal meltdown. Groups like Winger, Cinderella, Kix, Warrant, and Vixen that all went to shit faster than a teased up hairdo in a rainstorm. Episode Playlist Check out our episode playlist here.
