What Difference Does It Make: Gary Graff and 501 Essential Albums Of The 1980s
Being an 80s music podcast, it's no surprise that when we learned music journalist Gary Graff authored the book, 501 Essential Albums of the ’80s, we would have to talk with him. Naturally, whenever there is a list deemed "essential", there will be debate, and so we had questions such as, "Why this one and not that one?". It's a good talk, and one that will inspire you to think about your own essential 80s music albums. Vinyl Relics EPYSODE 43: "Turn On The Music Machine" by The Music Machine
EPYSODE 43: "Turn On The Music Machine". Guest: Music Machine guitarist Mark Landon. This week on Vinyl Relics, we dive deep into the dark, fuzz-drenched grooves of "Turn On The Music Machine", the 1966 debut album from proto-punk pioneers The Music Machine. Known for their all-black attire and snarling, hypnotic sound, The Music Machine helped define the garage rock era with hits like “Talk Talk” and “The People In Me.” In this special epysode, we’re joined by guest Mark Landon, the band’s original guitarist, who shares exclusive behind-the-scenes stories from the recording sessions, insights into the band’s creative process, and what it was like to be part of one of the most influential — and underrated — acts of the ‘60s. I hope you dig "Turn On The Music Machine" as much as I do. - Farmer John ===CONNECT & SUPPORT=== Transport yourself into the realm of grooviness by supporting us on Patreon using this link --> patreon.com/FarmerJohnMusic Use this link to follow us on Facebook --> https://www.facebook.com/farmerjohnmusic/ Use this link to follow us on Instagram --> https://www.instagram.com/vinylrelics/ Use this link to follow us on TikTok --> https://www.tiktok.com/@vinylrelicspodcast Use this link to follow us on BlueSky --> https://bsky.app/profile/farmerjohnmusic.bsky.social And find us on X here --> @VinylRelicsPod Email me here --> [email protected] ===LINKS=== Here’s a link to the Ron Edgar interview I mentioned: https://www.minniepaulmusic.com/artists/k-to-n/music-machine-ron-edgar-keith-olsen/ Check out Ritchie Unterberger's books here: http://www.richieunterberger.com ===AIR OARS END O'MISHUNS=== I mistakenly referred to Gale Garnett's song as "We'll Walk In The Sunshine". Songfacts Podcast | Eric Bass of Shinedown
Eric Bass has spent the last 15 years shaping the sound of Shinedown, not just as their bassist, but as the producer behind their albums Attention Attention and Planet Zero. Now with his solo album I Had a Name , he brings us a sprawling, cinematic solo debut that marks a major shift. Written, performed, and produced entirely by Eric, the album is a dystopian concept record that plays like a rock opera, charting the story of a nameless hero on a surreal journey of identity and resistance. It’s also tied to a graphic novel that expands the universe he’s built. Eric opens up about the creative risks, personal revelations, and sonic experimentation that shaped I Had a Name, breaks down key tracks like “Mind Control” and “Azalia,” talks about Shinedown's unexpected musical collaboration with Sylvester Stallone, and more in this episode. Only Three Lads: Top 5 Shoegaze Albums of the '90s (with Alan D. Boyd from Movieland)
EYeah, we'll make the same disclaimer we made the last time we talked about shoegaze. We know the term is polarizing. We realize that it was coined by the press as a term of derision for what had previously been known as "the scene that celebrates itself." Legend has it that writer Andy Ross first used it in a Sounds review to describe how Moose singer/guitarist Russell Yates was constantly looking down at the lyrics he had taped to the floor and/or his guitar pedals. But, face it, you hear the term and you know exactly what it is...ethereal vocals, woozy melodies, ear-piercingly loud, effects-laden guitars, all awash in a psychedelic haze. Nowadays, the bands that play this kind of music wear the "shoegaze" badge with pride. But the O.G.s had to walk so you could run, kids. Hence, this week we are celebrating some of the great shoegaze albums of the 1990s. Joining us is the singer/songwriter/guitarist of '90s Vancouver cult shoegazers Movieland, Alan D. Boyd. Movieland has been honored with the first installment of an archival series from 604 Decades that takes a look back at Vancouver's rich, if unexplored arts history. This rarities and demos collection, Then & Now, proves that they should have been at the top of the marquee during their time. https://movieland1990.bandcamp.com/album/then-now After Movieland disbanded in 1994, Alan moved to the UK, and has enjoyed a long career as an acclaimed composer for TV ("Day of the Triffids") and film ("Four Strings Good"), as well performing in the folk trio Little Sparta (also featuring Susie Honeyman from the Mekons). As you would expect during an episode on shoegaze, we divert our attention to Canadian pop stars, the other Movielands, and have a rare (maybe the first time?) double Triple Crossover! Ep 129See Hear Podcast Episode 128 - Interview with Francois Girard about "Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould"
There’s a moment in Mel Brooks’ “History of the World Part 1” where we’re told that shortly after the first artists came the first art critics…..I’ll leave you to determine what happens…. The music world is certainly not short of people with opinions in regards to others’ ability to perform and provide nuance to the work they present for us as music lovers to listen to. In the classical world, interpretation of the canon of baroque, classical, romantic and modernist music can be a mystery to some of us who are not classically trained musicians. There’s no shortage of classical soloists who’ve captured the wider public’s imagination, yet have their critics as well. Welcome to episode 128 of See Hear Podcast. Glenn Gould is regarded as one of the great pianists of the 20th century, known in particular for his love of and heavy focus on the composition of J.S. Bach. However, he wasn’t unanimously revered. Pianist Alfred Brendel was vocally not a fan. Even Leonard Bernstein who did love Gould’s approach covered himself before a TV broadcast of a Brahms piano concerto by saying Gould’s approach was not going to be for everybody. Therein lies the heart of the matter – when you depart from an accepted orthodox style of playing of the canon, you’re going to upset people. Glenn Gould upset some people. BUT….the reason he is still being talked about was for what he DID, not what he didn’t do. He’s most famous for his first and last released recordings, Bach’s Goldberg Variations (1955 and 1981). Even there his recordings are wildly different, and the latter upset some who championed the earlier recording. He’s also remembered for his intellect and could discuss may other issues outside of music – something he did on radio and TV specials. In 1993, film director Francois Girard released a brilliant biopic / documentary called “Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould”. Like its subject, the film takes a wildly different approach from the accepted norm of musician biopic. As the name implies, the film comprises of 32 shorts featuring narratives, interviews, performance and experimentation that provide a strong sense of Gould’s character. There is a 3 act structure, but not in the usual way that you get in a conventional musician biography. June 2025 sees the reissue of the film by Criterion, and I was thrilled to welcome Francois to the podcast to talk about this film and Gould in general. Unfortunately, we couldn’t coordinate the timing to have Tim or Kerry available, but I still had a fascinating conversation with Francois that I hope you find illuminating. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Help! - The Beatles
Listeners of The Wolf know that despite the fact that The Wolf lived mere yards (or meters) from Abbey Road, he and Action Jackson aren't huge Beatles fans. While he did go through a Beatles stage in high school, it was really an education on how the band evolved and created some amazing music which is still enjoyed and studied today. However, thanks to a run of 60s rock related movies that ran on Cinemax one night in the 80s, The Wolf became very familiar with Help! as he recorded the movie on VHS and watched it over and over. It was in technicolor, unlike A Hard Day's Night, and showed the boys having fun in exotic locales like Switzerland, The Bahamas, Stonehenge and Buckingham Palace. The seven tunes on the album that were included in the movie all hold up well and are fun to sing along with while you're watching. But the album is the first step moving from being bubble gum pop stars into more respected recording artists. We review the UK version of the album as the US version is shorter with orchestrated score tunes from the movie. The whole first side of the UK album features beloved songs from the movie like the title track, Ticket To Ride, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away and The Night Before. But the second side also features some Beatles classics like Ringo singing Act Naturally, I've Just Seen A Face and the all-time classic Yesterday. It's amazing that the boys were all so young (21-24) and were maturing before our eyes as they were now able to write more robust tunes with more mature themes. Bob Dylan had introduced them to marijuana by now and they'd done their first LSD trips which would show up more on an album from later in 1965, Rubber Soul (and after). But this one has one foot in the old, teenage dream Beatles phase and one in the more mature and experimental Beatles. We can't believe it's turning 60 but we went track x track to celebrate. What Difference Does It Make: Translator Goes Beyond Today
Translator was one of those bands on the precipice of breaking big in the 80s. Signed to local indie label 415 Records, they soon found themselves part of the big-time music business when their label signed a distribution deal with Columbia Records. In 1982, their single, "Everywhere That I'm Not”, became popular on the burgeoning college radio circuit. Vinyl Relics EPYSODE 42: "Before The Dream Faded" by The Misunderstood
EPYSODE 42: "Before The Dream Faded". Guest: Misunderstood lead singer Rick Brown. In this week’s epysode of The Vinyl Relics Podcast, we turn the spotlight on one of the most tragically overlooked albums of the psychedelic era... "Before the Dream Faded" by The Misunderstood. Formed in Riverside, California and exiled to London in the mid-'60s, The Misunderstood fused American garage rock with British psychedelia, creating a sound that was years ahead of its time. With searing slide guitar, political lyrics, and sonic ambition to spare, their music foreshadowed both heavy rock and acid experimentation and yet, they faded before they could truly rise. We’re joined by guest Rick Brown, the band’s original lead singer, who shares powerful firsthand stories about the band's creative vision, their turbulent rise, and the mysterious circumstances that tore them apart just as they were poised for greatness. It's one of the most fascinating “what coulda been” stories in rock history. I hope you dig "Before The Dream Faded" as much as I do. - Farmer John ===CONNECT & SUPPORT=== Transport yourself into the realm of grooviness by supporting us on Patreon using this link --> patreon.com/FarmerJohnMusic Use this link to follow us on Facebook --> https://www.facebook.com/farmerjohnmusic/ Use this link to follow us on Instagram --> https://www.instagram.com/vinylrelics/ Use this link to follow us on TikTok --> https://www.tiktok.com/@vinylrelicspodcast Use this link to follow us on BlueSky --> https://bsky.app/profile/farmerjohnmusic.bsky.social And find us on X here --> @VinylRelicsPod Email me here --> [email protected] ===THE MUSIC=== Songs used in this Epysode, in order of appearance. Only Three Lads: Mike Watt (Minutemen, mssv) - Top 5 Live Versions That Blow the Studio Versions Away
ELive performances often bring an energy and spontaneity that studio recordings can't fully capture. On stage, musicians interact with the audience, infusing the song with a palpable energy and improvisational flair. The live setting can also allow for reinterpretation of arrangements—extended solos, altered tempos, or unexpected twists—that make the experience feel more personal and vibrant compared to the polished, precise nature of studio versions. Just ask legendary bassist Mike Watt, who is about to embark on his 72nd tour over his 45 year career - a career that started with one of the greatest American punk bands ever, Minutemen, and countless projects including fIREHOSE, The Stooges, dos, and, currently, mssv. mssv is a post-genre supergroup consisting of watt, drummer Stephen Hodges (who played on some of Tom Waits's classic records, among others), and led by guitarist extraordinaire Mike Baggetta. Their new album, On And On is an exciting, trippy psychedelic fever dream featuring eight boundary-pushing tracks. It is out now on BIG EGO records on 12" vinyl LP, digital download, and streaming services. mssv's 52-date "haru tour 2025" starts in watt's hometown of San Pedro, CA on March 13th, and winds through the country before concluding at the Zebulon in Los Angeles on May 3rd. No matter where you are in the U.S., mssv will be close by this spring! Ugly American Werewolf in London: The Session Man - Nicky Hopkins Documentary Review
While the average rock fan may not know the name Nicky Hopkins, the average rock legend knows the name very well and most likely worked with him at some point. A classically trained pianist, Nicky Hopkins would go onto play with the greatest rock bands of all time - The Beatles, The Rollings Stones, The Who, The Kinks - and that was just the 1960s!! Finally, Nicky has been chosen for induction into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame! Though he did have some solo releases, Nicky found himself most at home in the studio working with other artists and helping to create some of the most iconic songs of all time. The eerie beginning to The Stones Monkey Man? That was Nicky. The whirling magic in She's A Rainbow? Nicky again. He ended up playing on over 250 albums and more than 1,000 songs, some of which were the greatest of all time. The Session Man is a documentary about his life and career growing up in the midlands, working his way to London, working with icons and then moving to America. This examination of the soft-spoken Hopkins illustrates his health battles throughout his life which would conspire to keep him off the road for much of his career and how he eventually found a home with other musicians in Northern California and eventually Nashville. Nicky Hopkins is an unsung hero of rock n roll and we're proud to shed a little light on the man and his amazing talent. VINYL RELICS PODAST - Epysode 41: "In The Beginning" by Genesis
EPYSODE 41: "In The Beginning". Guest: Genesis bassist "Foxy" Fred Rivera. This week on The Vinyl Relics Podcast, we dive into one of the great overlooked curiosities of late-‘60s American rock: "In the Beginning" by the Los Angeles-based Genesis — not the British prog giants, but a raw, garage-psych outfit that burned bright and fast in 1968. With its blend of fuzzed-out guitars, moody organ lines, and Sunset Strip attitude, this epysode uncovers why this album has become a cult favorite among psych-rock collectors and crate diggers alike. Even better — we’re joined by guest Fred “Foxy” Rivera, the original bassist of the band, who shares exclusive firsthand stories from inside the L.A. scene, the band’s short-lived journey, and what really went down behind the recording of their one and only album. Tune in, turn on & drop by and rediscover the other Genesis — before Genesis was Genesis. I hope you dig "In The Beginning" as much as I do. - Farmer John ===CONNECT & SUPPORT=== Transport yourself into the realm of grooviness by supporting us on Patreon using this link --> patreon.com/FarmerJohnMusic Use this link to follow us on Facebook --> https://www.facebook.com/farmerjohnmusic/ Use this link to follow us on Instagram --> https://www.instagram.com/vinylrelics/ Use this link to follow us on TikTok --> https://www.tiktok.com/@vinylrelicspodcast Use this link to follow us on BlueSky --> https://bsky.app/profile/farmerjohnmusic.bsky.social And find us on X here --> @VinylRelicsPod Email me here --> [email protected] ===LINKS=== You need to check out Fred Rivera's book "Raw Man".
