第一次大戦が終結し、長く続いたハプスブルク家の支配からようやく解放され、人々はカフェでビルゼン・ビールを飲み、クールでリアルな機関銃を製造し、中部ヨーロッパに訪れた束の間の平和を味わっていた。フランツ・カフカは二年前に不遇のうちに世を去っていた。ほどなくヒットラーが何処からともなく出現し、その小ぢんまりした美しい国をあっという間にむさぼり食ってしまうのだが、そんなひどいことになるとは、当時まだ誰ひとりとして知らない。歴史が人に示してくれる最も重要な命題は「当時、先のことは誰にも分かりませんでした」ということかもしれない。青豆は音楽を聴きながら、ボヘミア平原を渡るのびやかな風を想像し、歴史のあり方について思いをめぐらせた。
１九二六年には大正天皇が崩御し、年号が昭和に変わった。日本でも暗い嫌な時代がそろそろ始まろうとしていた。モダニズムとデモクラシーの短い間奏曲が終わり、ファシズムが幅をきかせるようになる。
歴史はスポーツとならんで、青豆が愛好するものの一つだった。小説を読むことはあまりないが歴史に関連した青物ならいくらでも読めた。歴史について彼女が気に入っているのは、すべての事実が基本的に特定の年号と場所に結びついているところだった。歴史の年号を記憶するのは、彼女にとってそれほど難しいことではない。数字を丸い暗記しなくても、いろんな出来事の前後左右の関係性を掴んでしまえば、年号は自動的に浮かび上がってくる。中学を高校では青豆は歴史の試験では常にクラスで最高点をとった。歴史の年号を覚えるのが苦手だという人を目にするたびに、青豆は不思議に思った。どうしてそんな簡単なことができないのだろう？
青豆というのは彼女の本名である。父方の祖父は福島県の出身で、その山の中の小さな町だか（１３）村だかには、青豆という性をもった人々が実際に何人かいるということだた。

The First World War had ended, and finally freed from the long reign of the Hapsburgs, people were drinking Pilsner beer in cafes, manufacturing cool, real machine guns, and enjoying a momentary peace that came to Central Europe.
フランツ・カフカは二年前に不遇のうちに世を去っていた。 Franz Kafka had passed away under unfortunate circumstances two years earlier.
ほどなくヒットラーが何処からともなく出現し、その小ぢんまりした美しい国をあっという間にむさぼり食ってしまうのだが、そんなひどいことになるとは、当時まだ誰ひとりとして知らない。 Soon Hitler would emerge from nowhere, and voraciously devour that quaint beautiful country in no time, but nobody knew at that time that such a terrible thing would happen.
歴史が人に示してくれる最も重要な命題は「当時、先のことは誰にも分かりませんでした」ということかもしれない。 The most important proposition history shows us might be that "at any time, nobody knew what lay ahead."
青豆は音楽を聴きながら、ボヘミア平原を渡るのびやかな風を想像し、歴史のあり方について思いをめぐらせた。 While listening to the music, Aomame imagined the gentle breeze sweeping across the Bohemian plain and pondered the nature of history.
１九二六年には大正天皇が崩御し、年号が昭和に変わった。 In 1926, Emperor Taisho passed away, and the Japan came under the rule of Emperor Showa.
日本でも暗い嫌な時代がそろそろ始まろうとしていた。 In Japan too, a dark, unpleasant time was about to begin.
モダニズムとデモクラシーの短い間奏曲が終わり、ファシズムが幅をきかせるようになる。 The short interlude of modernism and democracy ended, and fascism began to spread.
歴史はスポーツとならんで、青豆が愛好するものの一つだった。 History, alongside sports, was one of the things Aomame enjoyed.
小説を読むことはあまりないが歴史に関連した青物ならいくらでも読めた。 She didn’t read novels much, but she could read as much non-fiction related to history as there was.
歴史について彼女が気に入っているのは、すべての事実が基本的に特定の年号と場所に結びついているところだった。 What she liked about history was that all facts were fundamentally tied to a specific year and place.
歴史の年号を記憶するのは、彼女にとってそれほど難しいことではない。 Remembering the years in history was not so difficult for her.
数字を丸い暗記しなくても、いろんな出来事の前後左右の関係性を掴んでしまえば、年号は自動的に浮かび上がってくる。 Even without rote memorization of numbers, once she grasped the relationships of various events, the years would automatically come to her.
中学を高校では青豆は歴史の試験では常にクラスで最高点をとった。 In junior high and high school, Aomame always scored the highest in the class on history exams.
歴史の年号を覚えるのが苦手だという人を目にするたびに、青豆は不思議に思った。 Whenever she saw people who struggled to remember the years in history, Aomame found it strange.
どうしてそんな簡単なことができないのだろう？ Why couldn’t they do such a simple thing?
青豆というのは彼女の本名である。 "Aomame" was her real name.
父方の祖父は福島県の出身で、その山の中の小さな町だか（１３）村だかには、青豆という性をもった人々が実際に何人かいるということだた。 Her paternal grandfather was from Fukushima Prefecture, and in some small town or village in the mountains there, there were actually several people with the surname Aomame.
