「運転手さんはその階段を使ったことがあるの？」
返事はなかった。運転手はルームミラーの中で淡く微笑んだだけだ。いろんな意味に取れそうな笑みだった。
「あくまでお客さん次第です」、運転手は音楽に合わせて指先でハンドルをトントン軽く叩きながらそう言った。「ここに座って良い音で音楽を聴きながら、のんびりしてらしても、私としちゃちっともかまいません。いくらがんばってもどこにも行けないんですから、こうなったらお互い腹をくくるしかありません。しかしもし緊急の用件がおありなら、そう言う非常手段もなくはないってことです」
青豆は軽く顔をしかめ、腕時計に目をやり、それから顔を上げて周りの車を眺めた。右側には、うっすらと白くほこりを被った黒い三菱パジェロがいた。助手席に座った若い男は窓を開けて、退屈そうに煙草を吸っていた。髪が長く、日焼けして、えんじ色のウィンドブレーカーを着ている。荷物窓には使い込まれた汚ないサーフボードが何枚か積んであった。その前にはグレーのサーブ９００が停まっていた。ティントしたガラス窓はピタリと閉められ、どんな人間が乗っているのかは外からはうがえない。実にきれいにワックスがかけられている。そばに寄ったら車体に顔が映りそうなくらいだ。
青豆の乗ったタクシーの前には、リアバンパにへこみのある練馬ナンバーの赤いスズキ・アルトがいた。若い母新がハンドルを握っている。小さな子供は退屈して、シートの上に立って動き回っていた。母新はうんざりしたような顔で注意を与えていた。母新の口に動きがガラス越し（２２）に読みとれた。
"Have you ever used that staircase before?" Aomame asked.
There was no answer. The driver just smiled faintly in the rearview mirror. It was a smile that could be interpreted in many ways.
"It's entirely up to the customer," the driver said, tapping the steering wheel lightly with his fingertips in time with the music. "You can sit back and relax, listening to good music. It doesn't bother me in the slightest. No matter how hard you try, you can't go anywhere, so we might as well resign ourselves to the situation. However, if you have an urgent matter, it's not like there are no emergency measures."
Aomame frowned slightly, glanced at her wristwatch, and then looked up to survey the surrounding cars. On the right was a black Mitsubishi Pajero, dusted faintly white. A young man sitting in the passenger seat had the window down and was smoking a cigarette, looking bored. He had long, sun-tanned hair and was wearing a maroon windbreaker. There were several used and dirty surfboards stacked in the cargo window. In front of it was a gray Saab 900 parked. Its tinted windows were shut tight, making it impossible to see who was inside from the outside. The car was waxed so clean it seemed like one could see their reflection on its surface.
In front of Aomame's taxi was a red Suzuki Alto with a dented rear bumper and a Nerima license plate. A young mother was behind the wheel. A small child, bored, was standing and moving around on the seat. The mother gave a look of exasperation as she cautioned the child. The movement of the mother's mouth could be read through the glass.
