十分前と全く同じ光景だ。この十分の間に、車は十メートルも進んではいないだろう。
青豆はひとしきり考えをめぐらせた。いろんな要素を、優先順位に従って頭の中で整理した。結論が出るまでに時間は掛からなかった。ヤネーチェックの音楽も、それに合わせるように最終楽章に入ろうとしていた。
青豆はショルダーバーグからコフりなレイバンのサングラスを出してかけた。そして財布から１０００円札を３枚取り出して運転手に渡した。
「ここで降ります。遅れるわけにはいかないから」と彼女は言った。
運転手は背いて、金を受け取った。「領収書は？」
「結構です。お釣りもいらない」
「それはどうも」と運転手は言った。「風は強そうですから、気をつけて下さい。足を滑らせたりしないように」
「きをつけます」と青豆は言った。
「それから」と運転手はルームミラー向かって言った。「一つ覚えておいていただきたいのですが、ものごとは見かけと違います」
物事は見かけと違う、と青豆は頭の中でその言葉を繰り返した。そして軽く眉をひそめた。
「それはどういうことがしら？」
運転手は言葉を選びながら言った。「つまりですね。言うなればこれから、普通ではないことをなさるわけです。そうですよね？真っ昼間に首都高速道路の日通用階段を降りるなんて、普通の（２３）人はまずやりません。特に女性はそんなことしません」
The scene was exactly the same as ten minutes ago. In that time, the car hadn't moved more than ten meters.
Aomame spent some time pondering. She sorted out various elements in her head according to priority. It didn't take long to come to a conclusion. The Janáček music was also about to enter its final movement, as if on cue.
Aomame took a pair of coughed-up Ray-Ban sunglasses out of her shoulder bag and put them on. She then took out three 1,000 yen bills from her wallet and handed them to the driver.
"I'll get off here. I can't afford to be late," she said. The driver turned around to accept the money. "Do you need a receipt?" "No, thank you. I don't need change either."
"Thank you," said the driver. "It looks windy out there, so be careful not to slip."
"I'll be careful," Aomame responded.
"Also," the driver said, looking into the rearview mirror. "I want you to remember one thing: things are not always what they seem." Aomame repeated the words in her head, things are not always what they seem, and she frowned slightly. "What do you mean by that?" Choosing his words carefully, the driver said, "Well, it means that you are about to do something out of the ordinary. Right? Normally, no one descends the Metropolitan Expressway's emergency stairs in broad daylight."
