ひとつには「時間をかければいい」という小松の言葉が頭に焼き付いていたからだし、それに天五自身、とくに今すぐ小説家になりたいわけでもなかったからだ。授業のカリキュラムをうまく調整すれば、週に４日は自宅ですきなことをしていられた。7年間同じ予備校で講師をしているが、生徒たちの相田ではかなり評判が良い。考え方が要を得て、周りくど口なく、どんな質問にも即座に答えることができたからだ。天五自身が驚いたことに、彼には話術の才が具わっていた。説明も上手だったし、声もよくとおったし、冗談を言って教室をわかせることもできた。教師の仕事に脱ぐまで、自分ではずっと話し下手だと思っていた。今でも誰かと面と向かって話をしていると、緊張して言葉がうまく出てこないことがある。少人数のグループに入ると、もっぱら聞き投にまわった。しかし教壇に立ち、不特定多数の人々を前にすると、頭がスッと晴れ渡った状態になり、いくらでも気軽に話し続けられた。人間というのはよくわからないものだ、と天五はあらためて思った。
給料に不満はなかった。多額の収入とは言えないにせよ、予備校は能力に見合っただけの報酬を払う。生徒な講師を他の学校に引き抜かれることを恐れるからだ（実際にヘッドハンティングの話は何度かあった）。普通の学校ではそうはいかない。給料は年功序列で決まるし、私生活は上司によって管理され、能力や人気など何の意味も持たない。彼は予備校での仕事を楽しんでもいた。大半の生徒は大学受験という明確な目的意識を持って教室にやってきて、熱心に講義を聴いた。講師は教室で教える以外には何もしなくていい。これは天五にとってはありがたいことだ。生徒の非行や校則違反と言った面倒な問題に頭を頭を悩みませる必要はない。ただ教壇に立ち、数学の（４７）問題の解き方を教えればよかった。そして数字という道具を使った純粋な観念の行使は、天五が生来得意とすることろだった。

One reason was that Komatsu's words, "Take your time," were etched in his mind, and moreover, Tengo himself didn't particularly want to become a novelist right away.

If he prepared his class curriculum well, he could spend four days a week at home doing what he liked.

He had been teaching at the same preparatory school for seven years and was quite popular among the students.
考え方が要を得て、周りくど口なく、どんな質問にも即座に答えることができたからだ。
This was because his way of thinking was to the point, he was not long-winded, and he could answer any question immediately.
天五自身が驚いたことに、彼には話術の才が具わっていた。
To Tengo's own surprise, he possessed a talent for oration.
説明も上手だったし、声もよくとおったし、冗談を言って教室をわかせることもできた。
He was good at explaining, his voice carried well, and he could make the classroom laugh with his jokes.
教師の仕事に脱ぐまで、自分ではずっと話し下手だと思っていた。
Until he took up teaching, he had always thought of himself as a poor speaker.
今でも誰かと面と向かって話をしていると、緊張して言葉がうまく出てこないことがある。
Even now, when he talks face-to-face with someone, he sometimes gets nervous and struggles to find the right words.
少人数のグループに入ると、もっぱら聞き投にまわった。
When he joins a small group, he mostly just listens.
しかし教壇に立ち、不特定多数の人々を前にすると、頭がスッと晴れ渡った状態になり、いくらでも気軽に話し続けられた。
But when he stood at the podium in front of a large, unspecified audience, his mind cleared, and he could easily continue speaking.
人間というのはよくわからないものだ、と天五はあらためて思った。
"Humans are hard to understand," Tengo thought again.
給料に不満はなかった。
He was not dissatisfied with his salary.
多額の収入とは言えないにせよ、予備校は能力に見合っただけの報酬を払う。
While it wasn't a large income, the preparatory school paid a salary commensurate with one's abilities.
生徒な講師を他の学校に引き抜かれることを恐れるからだ（実際にヘッドハンティングの話は何度かあった）。
This was because they feared losing talented teachers to other schools (in fact, there had been several headhunting attempts).
普通の学校ではそうはいかない。
It's not like that in regular schools.
給料は年功序列で決まるし、私生活は上司によって管理され、能力や人気など何の意味も持たない。
Salary is determined by seniority, private life is managed by superiors, and ability or popularity mean nothing.
彼は予備校での仕事を楽しんでもいた。
He also enjoyed his work at the preparatory school.
大半の生徒は大学受験という明確な目的意識を持って教室にやってきて、熱心に講義を聴いた。
Most students came to the classroom with a clear purpose of university entrance exams and listened to lectures enthusiastically.
講師は教室で教える以外には何もしなくていい。
Teachers do not need to do anything other than teaching in the classroom.
これは天五にとってはありがたいことだ。
This was something Tengo was thankful for.
生徒の非行や校則違反と言った面倒な問題に頭を頭を悩みませる必要はない。
He didn't need to worry about troublesome issues like student delinquency or rule violations.
ただ教壇に立ち、数学の（４７）問題の解き方を教えればよかった。
All he had to do was stand at the podium and teach how to solve math problem.
そして数字という道具を使った純粋な観念の行使は、天五が生来得意とすることろだった。And the exercise of pure concepts using numbers was something Tengo was naturally good at.
