投書のリライトから、映画や新刊書の簡単な紹介記事から、果ては星占いまで、依頼があればなんでもこなした。天五がおみつきで書く星占いはよくあたるので評判になった。彼は「早朝の地震に気をつけてください」と書くと、実際にある日の早朝に大きな地震が起こった。そのような賃仕事は、臨時収入としてありがたかったし、また文章を書く練習にもなった。自分の書いた文章が、たとえどのようなかたちであれ、活字になって書店に並ぶのは嬉しいものだ。
天五はやがて文芸誌の新人党の下読みの仕事も与えられた。本人が新人党に応募する身でありたがら、一方で他の候補作の試読みをするというの不思議な話だが、天五自分の立場の微妙さを特にきにするでもなく、公正にそれらの作品に目を通した。そして出来の悪いつまらない小説を山ほど読むことによって、出来の悪いつまらない小説とはどういうものであるか、身に滲みて学んだ。彼は毎回百前後の数の作品を読み、なんとか意味らしきものを見出せそうな作品を十篇ほど選び、小松のところに持っていった。それぞれの作品に感想を書いたメモを添えた。最終選考に五篇が残され、四人の選考委員がその中から新人賞を選んだ。
天五のほかにも下読みのアルバイトがいたし、小松の他にも複数の編集者が下選考にあたった。公正を期していたわけだが、わざわざそんな手間をかける必要もなかった。少しでも見所の見逃しようはなかったから。天五の作品が最終選考に残ったことは３度あった。さすがに天五自身が自分の作品を選ぶことはなかったが、ほかの２人の下読み後が、そして編集部デスクである小松が残してくれた。それらの作品は新人賞を取れなかったが、天五はがかりもしなかった。

When he wrote "Be careful of an earthquake in the early morning," a large earthquake actually occurred one morning.

Although it was strange that he was a candidate for the new writers' group and at the same time was doing preliminary readings of other candidates' works, Tengo didn't particularly mind the delicacy of his position and reviewed those works impartially.
8. そして出来の悪いつまらない小説を山ほど読むことによって、出来の悪いつまらない小説とはどういうものであるか、身に滲みて学んだ。
And by reading countless poorly written and uninteresting novels, he deeply learned what makes a novel bad and uninteresting.

He read about a hundred works each season and chose about ten pieces that seemed to have some meaningful content, and took them to Komatsu.

Because there was no chance of overlooking even a slight point of interest.

Of course, Tengo himself never chose his own work, but the other two preliminary readers and Komatsu, the editorial desk, left it for him.

Those works did not win the newcomer award but Tengo was not concerned.
