仕事上のつき愛はあっても、誰とも個人的をしないからだ。彼がどこで生まれてどこで育ち、今どこに住んでいるのか、天五は何人つ知らなかった。長く話をしても、そんな話題は一切出てこない。そこまでとっつきが悪く、つきあいらしきこともせず、文壇を軽侮するような言動を取り、それでよく原稿が取れるものだと人は首をひねるのだが、本人は指して苦労もなさそうに、必要に応じて有名作家の原稿を集めてきた。彼のおかけで雑誌の体裁がなんとが整うということも何度かあった。だから人に好かれはせずとも、１目は置かれる。
噂では、小松が東京大学部にいたときに六〇年安保闘争があり、彼は学生運動組織の幹部クラスだったということだ。樺美智子がデモに参加し、警官隊に暴行を受けて死んだときにすぐ近くにいて、彼自身も浅からぬ傷を負ったという。真偽のはどはわからない。ただそう言われれば、と納得できるところはあった。長身でひょろりと痩せて、口がいやに大きく、鼻がいやに小さい。手脚が長く、指の先にニコチンのしみがついている。十九世紀のロシア文学に出てくる革命家崩れのインテリゲンチアを思わせるところがある。笑うことはあまりないが、いったん笑うと顔中が笑みになる。しかしそうなっても、とくに楽しそうには見えない。不吉な予言を準備しながらほくそ笑んでいる、年期を経た魔法使いとしか見えない。清潔で身だしなみは良いが、おそらく、服装なんぞに興味があないことを世界に示すためだろう、常に似たような服しか着ない。ツイードのジャケットに、白のオックスフォード綿のシャツか淡いグレーのポロシャツ、ネクタイはなし、グレーのスポン、スエード靴、それがユニフォームのようなものだ。色々と生地と絵の大きさがそれぞれわずかに異なるツイードの三つボタンジャケットが半ダースばかり、丁寧にブラシ（４３）をかけられ、自宅のクローゼットに吊るされている光景が目に浮かぶ。自分けをつけるために番号だって振られているかもしれない。

He was so unapproachable, not really socializing, and his actions and words seemed to belittle the literary world, making people wonder how he could get manuscripts so easily, but he himself, seemingly without much difficulty, collected manuscripts from famous authors as needed.
