「とは言ってない」、小松は鼻のわきこすりながら言った。「俺はこの作品については、ちょっとした別のアイデアを持っているんだ」
「ちょっとした別のアイデア」と天五は言った。そこには不吉な響きが微かに聞き取れた。
「次の作品に期待しろと天五くんは言う」と小松は言った。「俺だってもちろん期待はしたいさ。時間をかけて若い作家を大事に育てるのは、編集者としての大きな喜びだ。澄んだ夜空を見渡して、誰よりも先に新しい星を見つけるのは胸躍るものだ。ただ正直に言ってね、この子に次があるとは考えにいくい。俺もふつつかながら、この世界で20年飯を食ってきた。その間にいろんな作家が出たり引っ込んだりするのを目にしてきた。だから次がある人間と、次があるとは思えない人間の区別くらいはつくようになった。それでね、俺に言わせてもらえれば、この子には次はないよ。気の毒だけど、次の次もない。だいいちこの文章は、時間をかけ研鑽を積んで上達するような代物じゃないよ。いくら持ったってどうにもなりゃしない。持ちぼうけのまんまだ。どうしてかっていうとね、良い文章を書こう、上手い文章を書けるようになりたいと言うつもりが、本人に露ほどもないからさ。文章ってのは、生まれつき文才が具わっているか、あるいは死にものぐるいの努力をしてうまくなるか、どっちかしかないんだ。そしてこの（３９）不帰っていう子は、そのどっちでもない。。。

"Does that mean you'll easily drop it (the work)?"
「とは言ってない」、小松は鼻のわきこすりながら言った。
"I didn't say that," Komatsu said while rubbing the side of his nose.
「俺はこの作品については、ちょっとした別のアイデアを持っているんだ」
"As for this work, I have a small, different idea."
「ちょっとした別のアイデア」と天五は言った。そこには不吉な響きが微かに聞き取れた。
"A small, different idea," Tengo repeated. He faintly sensed an ominous tone.
「次の作品に期待しろと天五くんは言う」と小松は言った。
"Tengo, you say to look forward to the next work," Komatsu said.
「俺だってもちろん期待はしたいさ。時間をかけて若い作家を大事に育てるのは、編集者としての大きな喜びだ。
"Of course, I also want to hope. It's a great joy as an editor to take time and carefully nurture young writers.
澄んだ夜空を見渡して、誰よりも先に新しい星を見つけるのは胸躍るものだ。
Looking over the clear night sky and being the first to find a new star is thrilling.
ただ正直に言ってね、この子に次があるとは考えにいくい。
But to be honest, it's hard for me to imagine that this kid has a future.
俺もふつつかながら、この世界で20年飯を食ってきた。
Although I am still unpolished, I've been in this world for 20 years.
その間にいろんな作家が出たり引っ込んだりするのを目にしてきた。
During that time, I've seen various writers come and go.
だから次がある人間と、次があるとは思えない人間の区別くらいはつくようになった。
So, I've come to be able to distinguish between people who have a future and those who, I think, do not.
それでね、俺に言わせてもらえれば、この子には次はないよ。
And so, if you let me say, this kid has no future.
気の毒だけど、次の次もない。
It's unfortunate, but there's no future after the next either.
だいいちこの文章は、時間をかけ研鑽を積んで上達するような代物じゃないよ。
Firstly, this writing isn't something that will improve by spending time and honing skills.
いくら持ったってどうにもなりゃしない。持ちぼうけのまんまだ。
No matter how much it's carried, it won't amount to anything. It remains just a bluff.
どうしてかっていうとね、良い文章を書こう、上手い文章を書けるようになりたいと言うつもりが、本人に露ほどもないからさ。
The reason is, there's not even a hint in the person of wanting to write good or skilled writing.
文章ってのは、生まれつき文才が具わっているか、あるいは死にものぐるいの努力をしてうまくなるか、どっちかしかないんだ。
Writing is either you're born with literary talent, or you become good through desperate efforts, nothing else.
1そしてこのふきっていう子は、そのどっちでもない。
And this kid named Fuki, is neither of those.
