「でも最後まで読んでしまった。そうでしょう？」
小松は微笑んだ。普段は開けることのない抽斗の奥からひっぱり出してきたような微笑みだった。「そうだな、確かにおっしゃるとりだ。最後まで読んだよ。自分でも驚いたことに。新人党の応募作を俺が最後まで読み痛すんて、まずないことだ。おまけに部分的に読み返しまでした。そうなるともう惑星直列みたいなもんだ。そいうは認めよう」
「それはは何かがあるってことなんです。違いますか？」
小松は灰皿に煙草を置き、右手の中指で鼻のわきをこすった。しかし天五の問いかけに対しては返事をしなかった。
天五は言った「この子はまだ17歳、高校生です。小説を読んだり、書いたりする訓練ができてないだけです。今回の作品が新人党を取るっていうのは、そりゃたしかに難しいかもしれません。でも最終選考に残す価値はありますよ。小松さんの一存でそれくらいはできるでしょう。そうすればきっと次につながります」
「ふうん」と小松もう一度なって、退屈そうにあくびをした。そしてグラスの水を一口飲んだ。「なあ、天五くん、よく考えろよ。こんな荒っぽいものを最終選考に残してみろ。選考委員の先生方はひっくり返っちゃうぜ。怒り出すかもしれない。だいいち最後まで読みもしないよ。選考委員は４人とも現役の作家だ。みんな仕事が忙しい。最初の２ページをバラバラ四んだだけで（３８）あっさり放り出しちまうさ。こんなもの小学生の作文並みじゃないかってさ。磨けば光るものがここにはあります。なんて俺が揉み手をしながら熱弁を振るったところで、誰が耳を傾ける？俺の一存なんでものがたとえ力を持つにしても、そいつはもっと見込みのあるもののために撮っておきたいね。」

Translation
「でも最後まで読んでしまった。そうでしょう？」
"But I ended up reading it to the end. Right?"

Komatsu smiled. It was a smile like pulling something out of a drawer that is usually never opened.
「そうだな、確かにおっしゃるとりだ。最後まで読んだよ。自分でも驚いたことに。
"That's right, indeed as you say. I read it to the end, surprising even myself.
新人党の応募作を俺が最後まで読み痛すんて、まずないことだ。
It's almost unheard of for me to read a new writer's submission to the end.
おまけに部分的に読み返しまでした。
Moreover, I even reread parts of it.
そうなるともう惑星直列みたいなもんだ。そいうは認めよう。
When that happens, it's like a planetary alignment. I'll admit that.
「それは何かがあるってことなんです。違いますか？」
"That means there is something there, doesn't it? Isn't that right?"
小松は灰皿に煙草を置き、右手の中指で鼻のわきをこすった。
Komatsu put his cigarette in the ashtray and rubbed the side of his nose with the middle finger of his right hand.
しかし天五の問いかけに対しては返事をしなかった。
But he did not respond to Tengo's question.
天五は言った「この子はまだ17歳、高校生です。小説を読んだり、書いたりする訓練ができてないだけです。
Tengo said, "This kid is still 17, a high school student. They just haven't been trained in reading or writing novels.
今回の作品が新人党を取るっていうのは、そりゃたしかに難しいかもしれません。
Winning the new writers' contest with this work might indeed be difficult.
でも最終選考に残す価値はありますよ。
But it's worth keeping in the final selection.
小松さんの一存でそれくらいはできるでしょう。
You can do at least that much on your own discretion, Komatsu.
そうすればきっと次につながります」

"Hmm," Komatsu muttered again, yawning with boredom.
そしてグラスの水を一口飲んだ。
Then he took a sip of water from his glass.
「なあ、天五くん、よく考えろよ。こんな荒っぽいものを最終選考に残してみろ。
"Hey, Tengo, think about it well. Try leaving such a rough thing in the final selection.
選考委員の先生方はひっくり返っちゃうぜ。
The selection committee members would be astounded.
怒り出すかもしれない。
They might even get angry.
だいいち最後まで読みもしないよ。
Firstly, they won't even read it to the end.
選考委員は４人とも現役の作家だ。
All four selection committee members are active writers.
みんな仕事が忙しい。
They are all busy with their work.
最初の２ページをバラバラ四んだだけで（３８）あっさり放り出しちまうさ。
They would easily discard it just by glancing through the first two pages.

They would say it's on par with a grade schooler's essay.

Even if I argue passionately while rubbing my hands, who would listen?

Even if my discretion holds power, I'd rather save it for something more promising."
