でもこの物語には少なくともひとを引き込むものがあります筋全体としては幻想的なのに、細部の描写が嫌にリアルなんです。そのパランスがとてもいい。オリジナリティーとか必然性とか言った言葉が適切なのかどうか、僕には分かりません。そんな水準まで達していないと言われれば、そのとおりかもしれない。でもつっかえつっかえ読み終えたとき、あとにしんとした手応えが残ります。それがたとえ居心地の悪い、うまく説明のつかない奇妙な感触であるにしてもです。
小松は何も言わず天五の顔を見ていた。更に多くの言葉を彼は求めていた。
天五は続けた。「文章に稚拙なところがあるからというだけで、この作品を簡単に選考から落として欲しくなかったんです。この何年か仕事として、山ほど応募原稿を読んできました。まあ読んだというよりは、読み飛ばしたという方が近いですが。比較的良く書けた作品もあれば、著にも棒にもかからないものもーもちろんあとの方が圧倒的に多いんだけどーありました。でもとに書くそれだけの数の作品に目を通してきて、反にも手応えらしきものを感じたのはこの「空気さなぎ」が初めてです。読み終えて、もう一度頭から読み返したいという気持ちになったのもこれが初めてです」
「ふうん」と小松は言った。そしていかにも興味なさそうに煙草の煙を吸き、口をすぼめた。しかし天五は小松との決して短くないつきあいから、その見かけの表情には簡単にだまされないようになっていた。この男は往々にして、本心とは関係のない、あるいは全く逆の表情を顔に浮かべることがある。だから天五は相手が口を開くのを辛抱強く持った。
「俺も読んだよ」と小松はしばらく時間を相手から置いてから言った。「天国くんから電話をもらって、その後すぐに原稿を読んだ。いや、でも、おそろしく下手だね。てにをはもなってないし、何が言いたいのか意味がよくわからない文章だってある。小説なんか書く前に、文章の書き方を基数から勉強し直した方がいいよな」
Translation and Vocabulary Notes

But this story has at least something that draws people in; the overall plot is fantastical, yet the detailed descriptions are unpleasantly realistic.

Whether words like originality or necessity are appropriate, I don't know.
4. そんな水準まで達していないと言われれば、そのとおりかもしれない。
If it's said that it hasn't reached such a level, that might be true.
5. でもつっかえつっかえ読み終えたとき、あとにしんとした手応えが残ります。
But after finishing reading it haltingly, a profound sense of accomplishment remains.

Even if it is an uncomfortable and indescribably strange feeling.

Komatsu was looking at Tengo's face without saying anything.

He was reaching for more words.

Tengo continued.

"I didn't want this work to be easily dropped from the selection just because the writing has immature aspects.
11. この何年か仕事として、山ほど応募原稿を読んできました。
Over the past few years, as a job, I've read mountains of submitted manuscripts.
12. まあ読んだというよりは、読み飛ばしたという方が近いですが。
Well, it's more like I skimmed through them rather than read them.
13. 比較的良く書けた作品もあれば、著にも棒にもかからないものもーもちろんあとの方が圧倒的に多いんだけどーありました。
There were relatively well-written works and also those that were neither here nor there - of course, the latter were overwhelmingly more.
14. でもとに書くそれだけの数の作品に目を通してきて、反にも手応えらしきものを感じたのはこの「空気さなぎ」が初めてです。
But having gone through so many works, the only one that gave me a sense of response was this 'Air Chrysalis.'
15. 読み終えて、もう一度頭から読み返したいという気持ちになったのもこれが初めてです」
"It's also the first time I felt like re-reading it from the beginning after finishing."
16. 「ふうん」と小松は言った。
"Hmm," said Komatsu.
17. そしていかにも興味なさそうに煙草の煙を吸き、口をすぼめた。
Then, as if uninterested, he drew on his cigarette and pursed his lips.
18. しかし天五は小松との決して短くないつきあいから、その見かけの表情には簡単にだまされないようになっていた。
However, Tengo, through his long association with Komatsu, had learned not to be easily deceived by such facial expressions.
19. この男は往々にして、本心とは関係のない、あるいは全く逆の表情を顔に浮かべることがある。
This man often wore expressions unrelated to, or even contrary to, his true feelings.
20. だから天五は相手が口を開くのを辛抱強く持った。
So, Tengo patiently waited for the other to speak.
21. 「俺も読んだよ」と小松はしばらく時間を相手から置いてから言った。
"I've read it too," Komatsu said after a pause.
22. 「天国くんから電話をもらって、その後すぐに原稿を読んだ。
"I got a call from Tengoku and read the manuscript right after.
23. いや、でも、おそろしく下手だね。
No, but it's terribly clumsy.
24. てにをはもなってないし、何が言いたいのか意味がよくわからない文章だってある。
The particles are all over the place, and there are sentences where it's hard to understand what is meant to be said.
25. 小説なんか書く前に、文章の書き方を基数から勉強し直した方がいいよな」
"It'd be better to relearn how to write sentences from the basics before writing novels, right?"
