ちょっとした別のアイデア
天五の最初の記憶は一歳半のときのものだ。彼の母親はブラウスを脱ぎ、白いスリップの肩紐ははずし、父親ではない男に乳首を吸わせていた。ベビーベッドには一人の赤ん坊がいて、それはおそらく天五だった。彼は自分を第三者として眺めている。あるいうはそれは彼の双子の兄弟なのだろうか？いや、そうじゃない。そこにいるのはたぶん一歳半の天五目者目だ。彼には直感的にそれがわかる。赤ん坊はめを閉じ、小さな寝息を立てて眠っていた。それが天五にとっての人生の最初の記憶だ。その十秒間ほどの情景が、鮮明に意識の壁に焼き付けられている。前もなく後ろもない。大きな洪水に見舞われた街の尖塔のようにその記憶はたたびとつ孤立し、濁った水面に頭を突き出している。
機会があるごとに天五は周りの人に尋ねてみた。思い出せる人生の最初の情景は何歳の頃のものですかと。多くの人にとって、それは4歳か5歳の時のものだった。早くても3歳だった。それより前という例は一つもない。子供が自分の周りにある情景を、ある程度論理性を有したものとして目撃し、認識できるようになるのは、少しなくとも3歳になってかららしい。それ（３１）より前の階段では、すべての情景は理解不能のカオスとして目に目いぬつる。
"天五の最初の記憶は一歳半のときのものだ。" - Ten'go's first memory dates back to when he was a year and a half old.
"彼の母親はブラウスを脱ぎ、白いスリップの肩紐ははずし、父親ではない男に乳首を吸わせていた。" - His mother removed her blouse, unfastened her white slip, and let a man who was not his father suck her nipples.
"ベビーベッドには一人の赤ん坊がいて、それはおそらく天五だった。" - There was a baby in the crib, probably Ten'go.
"彼は自分を第三者として眺めている。" - He is observing himself as a third person.
"あるいはそれは彼の双子の兄弟なのだろうか？" - Or could it be his twin brother?
"いや、そうじゃない。そこにいるのはたぶん一歳半の天五自身だ。" - No, that's not it. It's probably Ten'go himself at a year and a half.
"彼には直感的にそれがわかる。" - He intuitively understands this.
"赤ん坊は目を閉じ、小さな寝息を立てて眠っていた。" - The baby had its eyes closed and was sleeping with soft, small breaths.
"それが天五にとっての人生の最初の記憶だ。" - That is Ten'go's earliest memory of life.
"その十秒間ほどの情景が、鮮明に意識の壁に焼き付けられている。" - This scene, lasting about ten seconds, is vividly etched into his consciousness.
"前もなく後ろもない。" - There is no before or after.
"大きな洪水に見舞われた街の尖塔のようにその記憶はたたびとつ孤立し、濁った水面に頭を突き出している。" - Like a spire in a city hit by a massive flood, this memory stands alone, emerging from the murky waters.
"機会があるごとに天五は周りの人に尋ねてみた。思い出せる人生の最初の情景は何歳の頃のものですかと。" - Whenever the opportunity arose, Ten'go would ask people around him: "How old were you in your earliest life memory?"
"多くの人にとって、それは4歳か5歳の時のものだった。早くても3歳だった。" - For many, it was around four or five years old, at the earliest three.
"それより前という例は一つもない。" - There were no cases of memories from an earlier age.

It appears that it is not until the age of at least 3 that children are able to witness and perceive the scenes around them as having some level of logic. On the stairs before that (31), the whole scene is an incomprehensible chaos.
