「そうでしょうね」と青豆は言った。
「で、そう言うことをしますと、そのあとの日常の風景が、なんていうか、いつもとはちっとばかし違って見えてくるかもしれない。私にもそう言う経験はあります。でも見かけたに騙さないように、現実というのは常に一つきりです」
青豆は運転手の言ったことについて考えた。考えているうちにヤナーチェっくの音楽が終わり、聴衆が間髪を入れずに拍手を始めた。どこかのコンサートの録音を放送していたのだろう。長い熱心な拍手だった。ブラヴォーというかけ声も時折聞こえた。指揮者が微笑みを浮かべ、立ち上がった聴取に向かって何度も頭を上げている光景が目に浮かんだ。彼は顔を上げ、手を上げ、コンサートマスターと握手をし、後ろを向き、両手を上げてオークストラのメンバーを賞賛し、前を向いても一度深く頭を下げる。録音された拍手を長く聞いてると、そのうちに拍手に聞こえなくなる。終わりのない火星の砂嵐に耳を澄ませているみたいな気持ちになる。
「現実はいつだって一つしかありません」、書物の大事な一節にアンダーラインを引くように、運転手はゆっくりと繰り返した。
「もちろん」と青豆は言った。そのとおりだ。一つの物体は、一つの時間に、一つの場所にしかいられない。アインシュタインが証明した。現実とはどこまでも冷徹であり、どこまでも孤独なものだ。
青豆はカーステレオを指さした。「とても良い音だった」
運転手は肯いた。「作曲家の名前は何て言いましたっけ？」
Translation and Notes:
"Sure, that's true," said Aomame.
"And when you do such a thing, the everyday scenery afterwards might look, well, a little different than usual. I've had that experience myself. But don't be fooled by appearances; reality is always singular."
Aomame thought about what the driver had said. While she was thinking, the Janacek music ended, and the audience immediately began to applaud. It must have been a broadcast recording of a concert. The applause was long and enthusiastic. Shouts of "Bravo!" could be heard occasionally. She could visualize the conductor smiling, standing up to the audience, and nodding his head many times. He raised his face, lifted his hands, shook hands with the concertmaster, turned around, raised both hands to praise the orchestra members, and bowed deeply once more facing forward. Listening to the recorded applause for a long time, it began to sound like something other than applause. It felt like listening attentively to an endless Martian sandstorm.
"There is always only one reality," the driver repeated slowly, as if underlining an important passage in a book.
"Of course," Aomame agreed. That's exactly right. A single object can only be in one place at one time. Einstein proved that. Reality is always cold and always solitary.
Aomame pointed to the car stereo. "It had a very good sound."
The driver nodded. "What was the name of the composer again?"
