サングラスのブリッジを奥に押した。非常階段は目の前にある。灰色に塗装された鉄の階段だ。簡素で、事務的で、機能性だけが追求された階段。ストキングだけの素足に、タイトなミニスカートを履いた女性がのぼり降りすることを念頭に置いてスーツをデザインしてはいない。大型トラックが反対車線を取り過ぎ、階段をぶるぶると揺らせた。風が鉄骨の隙間を音を立てて吐き抜けた。しかしとにかく階段はそこにあった。あとは地上に降りていくだけだ。
青豆は最後に後ろを振り返す、講演を終えて演壇に立ったまま、聴衆からの質問を持ち受ける人のような姿勢で、路上に隙間なくなんだ自動車を左から右に、そして右から左に見渡した。自動車の列はさっきから全く前身いない。人々はそこに足と召され、他にすることもないまま、彼女の一挙一働を見守っていた。この女はいったい何をしようとしているのだろう、と彼らはいぶかっていた。関心と無関心が、羨ましさと軽侮がは入り交じった視線が、鉄柵の向こう側に降りた青豆の上にちゅうがれていた。彼らの感情は一つの側に転ぶことができぬまま、不安定な秤のようにふらふらと揺れていた。重い沈黙があたりに垂れ込めていた。手を上げて質問するものもいないかった。（質問されてもももちろん青豆には答えるつもりはなかったが）。人々は永遠に訪れることのないきっかけを、ただ無言のうちに待ち受けていた。青豆は軽く顎を引き、下唇を噛み、濃い緑色のサングラスの奥から彼らを人とおり品定めした。
私が誰ななのか、これからどこに行って何をしようとしているのか、きっと想像もつかないでしょうね。青豆は唇を動かさずにそう語りかけた。あなたたちはそこに縛りつけられたっきり、どこ（２９）にも行けない。
"サングラスのブリッジを奥に押した。" - She pushed back the bridge of her sunglasses.
"非常階段は目の前にある。" - The emergency stairs were right in front of her.
"灰色に塗装された鉄の階段だ。" - They were iron stairs painted gray.
"簡素で、事務的で、機能性だけが追求された階段。" - Simple, utilitarian, stairs designed purely for function.
"ストキングだけの素足に、タイトなミニスカートを履いた女性がのぼり降りすることを念頭に置いてスーツをデザインしてはいない。" - They weren't designed with the idea that a woman in stockings and a tight miniskirt would be walking up and down them.
"大型トラックが反対車線を取り過ぎ、階段をぶるぶると揺らせた。" - Large trucks passing by on the opposite lane shook the stairs violently.
"風が鉄骨の隙間を音を立てて吐き抜けた。" - The wind whistled through the gaps in the steel framework.
"しかしとにかく階段はそこにあった。" - But anyway, the stairs were there.
"あとは地上に降りていくだけだ。" - All that was left was to go down to the ground.
"青豆は最後に後ろを振り返す、講演を終えて演壇に立ったまま、聴衆からの質問を持ち受ける人のような姿勢で、路上に隙間なくなんだ自動車を左から右に、そして右から左に見渡した。" - Aomame turned around for one last look, surveying the tightly packed cars from left to right and right to left, in the posture of a lecturer standing at the podium, ready to take questions from the audience.
"自動車の列はさっきから全く前身いない。" - The line of cars hadn't moved forward at all since earlier.
"人々はそこに足と召され、他にすることもないまま、彼女の一挙一働を見守っていた。" - People were stuck there with nothing else to do, watching her every move.
"この女はいったい何をしようとしているのだろう、と彼らはいぶかっていた。" - They wondered what on earth this woman was trying to do.
"関心と無関心が、羨ましさと軽侮がは入り交じった視線が、鉄柵の向こう側に降りた青豆の上にちゅうがれていた。" - Gazes mixed with interest and disinterest, envy and scorn, were fixed on Aomame who had climbed over the iron fence.
"彼らの感情は一つの側に転ぶことができぬまま、不安定な秤のようにふらふらと揺れていた。" - Their emotions swayed uncertainly, like an unsteady scale, unable to settle on one side.
"重い沈黙があたりに垂れ込めていた。" - A heavy silence hung in the air.
"手を上げて質問するものもいないかった。（質問されてもももちろん青豆には答えるつもりはなかったが）。" - No one raised their hand to ask a question. (Not that Aomame intended to answer if they did.)
"人々は永遠に訪れることのないきっかけを、ただ無言のうちに待ち受けていた。" - People were silently waiting for a moment that would never come.
"青豆は軽く顎を引き、下唇を噛み、濃い緑色のサングラスの奥から彼らを人とおり品定めした。" - Aomame slightly tucked her chin, bit her lower lip, and appraised them from behind her dark green sunglasses.
"私が誰なのか、これからどこに行って何をしようとしているのか、きっと想像もつかないでしょうね。" - "You surely can't imagine who I am, where I'm going, or what I'm about to do," Aomame said without moving her lips.
"青豆は唇を動かさずにそう語りかけた。" - Aomame spoke thus without moving her lips.
"あなたたちはそこに縛りつけられたっきり、どこにも行けない。" - "You are all tied up there, unable to go anywhere."
