'Jupiter Invincible' wields superpowers against slavery

It’s not a traditional comic--it uses augmented reality, through a phone app, to bring out the real barbarity of slavery on a Maryland plantation. And not your traditional comic superhero: this is a 19-year-old enslaved African-American who wins immortal powers. Jupiter Invincible is the concept of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa and graphic artist Ram Devineni. Devineni is already known for a heroine who fights for those society scorns:

“The Superhero doesn’t have to fight an asteroid that’s about to collide into the earth. You can have superheroes fight basic problems that everyone deals with and understands, but through their heroic acts really challenge us and hopefully become better people.”

Links: Books in Bloom Festival Sun. Maryland’s nursing shortfall reaches critical point

Most of the country is short of nurses; Maryland is no exception. It needs thousands.Charlotte Wood, president of the Maryland Nurses Association, describes the complicated causes of the shortfall and creative ways --like forgiving student loans--to attract more to the field. Learn about Coppin State's nursing program, including its accelerated program, here. Then Kathleen Wisser, dean of nursing at Notre Dame of Maryland University, says its 15-month accelerated program draws people looking to pivot their profession. And Stephanie Long, a senior in the school’s traditional nursing course, reflects on gaining clinical experience during the pandemic.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? The origins of Speaker Pelosi's political savvy

Growing up in Baltimore’s Little Italy, Nancy D’Alesandro never pictured herself running for office. She watched her father campaign for Congress and for mayor; she helped her mother with the nitty-gritty of organizing and keeping track of political favors.Biographer Susan Page says that only after Nancy Pelosi had moved across the country, raised five children, chaired the California Democratic Party and raised millions for other candidates did she run for Congress herself--and a decade later pushed herself onto the path toward speaker. Pelosi told Page her father’s advice resonated,“No one is going to give you power, you have to seize it. So even if you think you deserve power, don’t think you’re going to be rewarded. You have to go out and fight for it and win it.” You can hear more from Susan Page next month. She’s hosting the White House Historical Association's 2021 Lecture Series. On November 3rd, she’ll be discussing the association’s history. This interview originally aired on July 15, 2021.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Who transit serves, who it fails in Baltimore

Holly Arnold, acting head of the Maryland Transit Administration, gives an update on how public transportation is recovering from the pandemic. We hear how MTA plans to reach more jobs in the Baltimore region, and improve on-time performance--about one out of four buses now runs late. Then, a new report identifies Baltimore’s areas of greatest transit need. We speak with Samuel Jordan of the Baltimore Transit Equity Coalition. He says lagging access poses a health hazard to the city’s Black and brown residents.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? The art of persuasion

Persuasion is what Andres Lares does all day. Actually, most of us spend a big part of our day trying to persuade people to see things our way--but Lares and his colleagues do it full time, in an organized way, at the Shapiro Negotiations Institute. So three of them wrote a book called Persuade, that compresses the skill into four steps. Most people base choices on trust and emotions, Lares says--but you still have to present a logical case for what you’re proposing.

“Because over time the process of which we made a decision and the decision itself both impact how we feel about it. So it isn’t just where we got to but also how we got there, and so logic plays a big role in that.”

Links: Shapiro Negotiations Institute, Persuade, the book.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? What does it take to become American?

CityLit Project, dedicated to literature, writers, and their audiences, understands how storytelling can promote empathy. Its current series called ‘Becoming American,” offers proof.

CityLit board member Aditya Desai and author/producer Saima Sitwat give us a preview. One of them is Ale Balcazar from Colombia:

"We all share the missing of home. And I feel that if American fellows could understand that, things would be so different. The Tragedy Of Misdiagnosis

When persistent pain invaded Gary Stern’s gut, doctors at two local hospitals focused on the digestive-tract disease he’d had a decade earlier. They didn’t listen to him insist this felt different, and they didn’t order a standard test to check for an ulcer. The misdiagnosis triggered a cascade of surgeries and suffering that took his life. David Black wrote the book Ripped Apart to tell the story. Gary’s wife Carol never left his side, "Doctors need to realize it’s ok to make a mistake. But don’t cover it up. And that’s what they did with Gary. And that’s what ended up being his demise.” And neurologist Dr. David Newman-Toker of the Johns Hopkins ‘Center for Diagnostic Excellence’ tells how patients can guard against medical misdiagnosis. Original air-date: August 3, 2021.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Pretrial Fees Continue Despite Goals of General Assembly

COVID-19 delayed trials and motivated judges to order home monitoring. The trade off? The fees charged to defendants for private electronic supervision as they await trial mounted up.A new law to waive fees for low income people went into effect July 1--but fees are still being charged, until early October. Health Inequity Is Everybody's Business

From her days growing up in Liberia, through medical training and now heading Johns Hopkins Center for Health Equity, Dr. Lisa Cooper has tried to understand and explain the ways race and the stress of discrimination shape health care and health outcomes. She’s distilled her work and ideas into a book Why Are Health Disparities Everyone’s Problem?

“Inequality really leads to greater social dysfunction and it’s really because when people live in these different social groups and feel that there’s a constant struggle for survival, that actually leads to more stressors and negative outcomes for everyone.”

Now, Cooper says, she’s eager to translate her health-disparities research to her new appointment to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

Links: "Why Are Health Disparities Everyone's Problem?"

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Obstacles In Maryland's Labor Market Recovery

The number of Marylanders holding jobs edged up most months this year--but it’s still far below the number who were working in February 2020.Bryan Renbaum of the news site, MarylandReporter.com tells us what some business leaders think it will take to get people back to work, and why many jobless Marylanders are still frustrated with the state’s unemployment system. Then, Janet Glover-Kervliet, founder of the Baltimore Job Hunters Support Group, compares what we’re going through now with the aftermath of the Great Recession a decade ago. Baltimore City Shrinks, Maryland Redistricts. The 2020 Census Numbers In Play.

The 2020 Census reveals that Baltimore’s population is at its lowest point in a century. How to reverse the shrinking trend? Seema Iyer oversees the Baltimore Neighborhood Indicators Alliance, which collects community-level data on hundreds of factors--like income, education, and employment. Iyer blames the slump on lack of access--access to transit, access to the internet, even access to capital. George Washington As Politician

George Washington was not destined to be great. He was the middle son of a middling Virginia family; he had land but seldom much cash. As a young militia leader, he did not win often. What he had, writes David O. Stewart in an astute biography, was ambition and the will to study the political skills of listening and compromise. Late in life, Washington focused on the horrors of slavery--yet never spoke against it publicly during eight years as America’s first president.Stewart's biography is, "George Washington: The Political Rise of America's Founding Father."

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Towards Racial Justice And Understanding

Adopting an anti-racist approach requires more than reading books and marching for justice.

That’s why Govans Presbyterian church has welcomed singer and activist Lea Gilmore as its first ‘Minister for Racial Justice and Multicultural Engagement.’ She and Pastor Tom Harris talk about ways the church’s white congregation is working to engage with the surrounding diverse Baltimore neighborhood.

“Lea has helped us say, no - you all need to do some work. The Science Side Of Poe

It’s not hard to imagine Edgar Allan Poe as obsessive. Consider his passionate poetry, his tales of horror barely tapping reality --not to mention his personal life: his ardent marriage to his cousin and his baffling death on the streets of Baltimore. But--manic about SCIENCE?

In his biography, historian John Tresch shows us a Poe who led his class at West Point in engineering and math, .. wrote about scientific discoveries and plunged into debates about evolution and the origin of the universe in an age when the line between science and quackery was a blur.

Tresch: “My goal is to reframe Poe’s life, and bring out this aspect of it --which is as central as it is neglected,-- which is his lifelong obsession with science.”

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? What Makes A Citizen?

African-Americans living free in Baltimore before the Civil War were constantly testing whether the law and courts saw them as citizens, with rights to be respected. In a prize-winning book, Johns Hopkins Professor Martha S. Jones argues the free Blacks of Baltimore shaped the idea of birthright citizenship that made it into the U.S. constitution … and that their struggle still carries meaning for today’s immigrants.

“People had been permitted to labor in this country, to build families, communities, vocations. And yet they lived with a profound uncertainty about whether they would be permitted to stay, whether they had rights under the law.”

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? The Agony Of Opioid Withdrawal

After a devastating motorcycle accident, Hopkins bioethicist Travis Rieder was prescribed high doses of opioids to stave off pain. When he began to taper off the drugs, he was immediately thrown into withdrawal. The advice Reider got from his doctors was to go back on opioids. His medical team had no plan for weaning him from the drugs.Reider’s book, “In Pain,” explores the history of opioids, why they are so addictive and how the medical system should be changed. History Of Anti-Maskers

A small piece of cloth continues to spark big debate in the U.S. Some Americans believe mandates to wear a mask infringe on their personal freedoms. Turns out, this has happened before.

Marian Moser Jones, formerly of the University of Maryland’s School of Public Health, tells us about the ‘anti-mask league of 1918.’

Jones admits that today’s mask-wearing mandates can feel inconvenient, but says we can learn from the Spanish Flu pandemic:

“The flu tells us, and the response to the flu tells us, that the more restrictions you have for longer periods of time, the lesser the mortality and the morbidity is going to be.”

Plus, how did that deadly flu play out in Baltimore?

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? The Racial Politics Of Sound

What sounds are deemed ‘Black’ or ‘White’? What values do we assign these judgments? How far back can these ideas be traced? We discuss the cultural politics of sound with English professor Jennifer Lynn Stoever of Binghamton University, author of “The Sonic Color Line.” She has sifted through slave narratives, music, and radio dramas to dissect the connection society makes between race and sound. We discuss efforts by White listeners to limit black voices, along with examples of Black resistance, and how the sonic color line affects Black and White lives today.Check out the Sounding Out! blog.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch?
