The art of leadership

Art has the power to inspire us … can it also be an agent of social change? Randi Pupkin, founder and executive director of Art with a Heart, believes it can. One of the nonprofit’s programs, the Art of Leadership, brings together diverse high school students to learn about empathy and creative problem-solving---giving them first-hand experiences with Baltimore’s successes and challenges:

“It’s really young people who are our future, and we have to expose them to networks of people and social issues, so that they can learn together and become a cohesive community together, to create change together.

Plus, we meet a former student of “Art of Leadership” to hear how it has made a difference in his life.

Links: Art with a Heart, Art of Leadership application.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? How the COVID pandemic rattled HIV testing

The COVID pandemic did not end the HIV-AIDS epidemic; it may have obscured it for a while, raising hurdles to getting tested for HIV. This virus pummels the Black community: Among people newly infected with HIV in 2019, African-Americans showed up at three times their share of U.S. population.Ahead of Black HIV-AIDS Awareness Day next week, we talk to Dr. Sarah Schmalzle, medical director of the THRIVE program at the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland Medical School. Environmental proposals to watch in the Maryland General Assembly

Advocates are renewing a push in Annapolis to amend Maryland’s constitution so that it would guarantee a right to a healthful environment--and a right to sue over threats to the environment.Staci Hartwell, climate-justice chair for the NAACP Maryland State Conference, says it’s about racial justice. Monica Brooks tells how an amendment might have boosted citizen efforts in Wicomico County to block a high-intensity animal feeding facility. And Shashawnda Campbell of the South Baltimore Community Land Trust recounts the health impacts of multiple pollution sources.

Learn more about the Maryland Campaign for Environmental Human Rights. Guarded optimism about the future of Alzheimer's treatment

110,000 Marylanders have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. More than twice that many care for them. And both numbers are growing. In June last year, the FDA approved the first new drug in 17 years to treat Alzheimer’s. University of Maryland neurologist Dr. Paul Fishman says sophisticated new scans can detect in the brains of more people the abnormal proteins that mark Alzheimer’s. Plus, typically used for Parkinson’s disease, deep brain stimulation uses sound pulses to stop tremors. How could this technology treat Alzheimer’s? Watch the full Alzheimer’s Foundation of America conference for Maryland - from November - here. Original air date: November 16, 2021.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? MindMaze: Harnessing the brain's power to heal

Stroke can be debilitating. Many survivors live with reduced mobility even after long, intensive therapy. Dr. John Krakauer is chief medical advisor at MindMaze, a digital neuro-therapeutics company that harnesses the brain’s natural ability to heal. He hopes to improve the odds for patients in rehabilitation:

“What we’re trying to do is to create something complimentary. Which is much more intense, much more high dose. And it is not focused on activities of daily living or pragmatic functioning. 0874 Letters of love

Long-distance love can be a challenge. Long-distance love across continents -- well that’s another story. A story told through eight hundred and seventy four letters that singer, composer and writer Alexandra Palting is turning into a musical -- with the apt title: eight hundred seventy four.

It’s the story, the love story, of her Filipino immigrant grandparents. But Palting also found herself in a bi-coastal relationship. She says the letters that offered lessons and comfort for her grandmother decades ago … now did the same for her:

"Long distance taught us to be alone and yet to know that you’re loved. And to be left and know that you are still lovable."

Links: RSVP for 0874, Asian Pasifika Arts Collective, Alexandra Palting

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Shining light on enslavers in Congress and honoring those held in bondage

Half a century after the 13th Amendment ended slavery, people who had been slaveholders continued to serve in Congress.Washington Post reporter Julie Weil describes her research into the more than 1700 Congressmen who were enslavers at some point in their lives. Amid Covid surges, rising inflation and a deadlocked Senate, what’s driving American politics?

Covering politics for decades for NPR, Mara Liasson juggles the clues that signal what voters are thinking: polling about who approves and disapproves of the job President Biden is doing, factors that worry them, like Covid surges and soaring inflation, and patterns of past rejections of the party in power. But Liasson says now she sees more caustic polarization than she ever has--sharpened, in her view, by former President Trump’s claim that the 2020 election was stolen, and the choice of many elected Republicans to agree, without evidence: "We don't even have a common set of facts now. And that’s really scary to me." Liasson will be in Baltimore a week from today for the Baltimore Speakers Series presented by Stevenson University.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? The pain and politics of migraine disease

Nearly 40 million Americans suffer from migraine attacks. They’ve been viewed as a ‘middle-aged white woman’s malady,’ but research shows otherwise.

Dr. Courtney White talks about racial disparities in treatment and why the syndrome is misunderstood:

“People think it’s just a bad headache and that you can tough through it -- take some over the counter medications. And this is not true, this is a neurological disease.”

Then Jaime Sanders, who has coped with daily migraine pain for forty years, tells why she pushes for better access to care, and talks about her advocacy goals:

“To make sure that everyone is seen and heard and validated and respected. I’ve gone through so much of my life being dismissed, and I know how that feels not being believed.”

Links: Coalition for Headache and Migraine Patients, the Disparities in Headache Advisory Council, The Migraine Diva blog.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? What happens when the pause on student loan repayment ends?

Freedom to vote

Since the huge voter turnout in 2020, many states are making it harder to vote: Dozens of new laws restrict who can vote; and how, when and where they can do it.

University of Baltimore law professor Gilda Daniels, author of Uncounted: The Crisis of Voter Suppression in America, says she’s not surprised.

“It is consistent with history. Which is that we have these cycles of progress, and they are met with these almost violent attempts of regression in regards to the right to vote.”

The odds are slim the Senate will pass the proposals it’s debating to set national standards for elections. But Maryland Congressman John Sarbanes, sponsor of a bill at the center of the fight, says he still hopes the debate will impel a couple colleagues to move to his side.

Links: Brennan Center for Justice Voting Laws Roundup, Bill H.R. 1 Freedom to Vote, Maryland Voter Registration.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Undoing the American residential caste system

When millions of African Americans moved from the rural south to northern cities, exclusionary zoning and restrictive covenants worked to constrain their space. Over time, these practices evolved into lending discrimination and then into urban renewal projects that displaced Black communities.

Georgetown law professor Sheryll Cashin argues that geography is central to the American residential caste system, "The biggest myth in this country is that high opportunity living is earned and that ‘hood’ living is the deserved result of bad individual choices. It’s government systemic practices that created this landscape, that frankly, we’re all ensnared in."

Cashin’s latest book White Space, Black Hood.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Rep. Jamie Raskin on living through the 'Unthinkable'

A year ago tomorrow the U.S. House voted to impeach then-President Trump, alleging he had incited insurrection at the Capitol a week earlier, and Maryland Congressman Jamie Raskin was immersed in organizing and leading the legal arguments for conviction. It was the hardest thing he’d ever done professionally, Raskin writes in his memoir, "Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth, and the Trials of American Democracy," but gave him a way to pour his radical faith in democracy into mourning his son Tommy, lost to suicide just two weeks before. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-8255. COVID relief, cannabis, and climate change: A preview of the 2022 General Assembly session

But Democratic lawmakers do want to see funding directed in other ways: to community programs, violence intervention programs. "We tee up topics from tougher sentences for gun crimes to climate change and protecting tenants. What is genius?

Genius is about more than being smart. Journalist and historian Walter Isaacson has written biographies of geniuses from Leonardo da Vinci to Steve Jobs … to Nobel Prize-winning biochemist Jennifer Doudna. Isaacson, who’ll be speaking in Baltimore tomorrow, says he’s learned genius is more about curiosity … and the creativity that surrounds you. He says some cities are cradles of creativity, and Baltimore might be one. He plans to talk about those lessons:

“Here is how they became creative and here is how we can make ourselves think in more creative ways.”

Links: Baltimore Speakers Series information

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Uncovering the hidden history of a Salisbury lynching

Professor Charles Chavis Jr. has invested five years probing the lynching of a young Black man in Salisbury on the Eastern Shore 90 years ago--what 23-year-old Matthew Williams meant to his family and community, the leaders of the supposedly spontaneous mob, how the white power structure covered up the crime -- and what it all means today.Chavis’s book, The Silent Shore: The Lynching of Matthew Williams and the Politics of Racism in the Free State, will be out next week. From the mistress of mystery: Lippman's latest

Baltimore’s Laura Lippman has been publishing tales of suspense, and winning awards for them, for a quarter century. She doesn’t take for granted the devious characters and puckered plots that shape her stories.

"I keep trying to make this harder on myself. I think the scariest thing for me would be to sit at my computer and think: ‘This is easy, I know how to do this.’ I want to be kind of terrified.”

We readers are kind of terrified, too, as we make our way through the twelve short stories in Lippman’s latest offering, a collection titled Seasonal Work. Healthy walks in Leakin Park. A Maryland family pushes to prevent military rollover deaths

In 2019, his father, Michael McDowell, and mother, Susan Flanigan, got the awful news their only son had been killed: the light armored vehicle he commanded rolled over, crushing him. The investigation the McDowells pushed for counted hundreds of similar accidents in the last decade, many-preventable. A new biography unpacks George Washington's flaws and political forte

George Washington was not destined to be great. He was the middle son of a middling Virginia family; he had land but seldom much cash. As a young militia leader, he did not win often. What he had, writes David O. Stewart in an astute biography, was ambition and the will to study the political skills of listening and compromise.Late in life, Washington focused on the horrors of slavery--yet never spoke against it publicly during eight years as America’s first president.Stewart will be talking about the book in a virtual event with the National Archives on February 8 at 1 p.m. His most recent book is historical fiction--the first of a planned trilogy about German settlers in Maine in the 1750’s. It’s called The New Land.Original air date: September 8, 2021.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? What's that I (can't) smell?

Pumpkin spice latte, roasting turkey, butter-drenched stuffing ... Holiday smells conjure memories. But for people experiencing side effects of Covid-19, a sense of smell can suddenly be non-existent, or even repulsive.

Dr. Danielle Reed of the ‘Monell Chemical Senses Center’ describes how smell works, why it affects taste and what can go awry.

Then we meet Kim Minton and Cristen Scifo. They’ve been coping with loss or distortion of smell and taste for more than a year. Its effects can be frustrating, depressing and confounding. Cristen says:

“The cravings for food don’t go away. I crave Chinese food like once or twice a week. Can I have it? No absolutely not. Because I take one smell of it, and it’s repulsive. Persuade: A four step process

Persuasion is what Andres Lares does all day. Actually, most of us spend a big part of our day trying to persuade people to see things our way--but Lares and his colleagues do it full time, in an organized way, at the Shapiro Negotiations Institute. So three of them wrote a book called Persuade, that compresses the skill into four steps. Most people base choices on trust and emotions, Lares says--but you still have to present a logical case for what you’re proposing.

“Because over time the process of which we made a decision and the decision itself both impact how we feel about it. So it isn’t just where we got to but also how we got there, and so logic plays a big role in that.”

Original airdate: 10.4.21

LInks: Shapiro Negotiations Institute, Persuade book.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? It sounds so cliche, you know that song you know ‘put a little love in your heart and the world will be a better place?’ I believe it.”

Links: Jonathan Gilmore Project, Journey to Funktopia tickets.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? What's in your drinking water; and Baker says bye to 'The Bay'

The call to “Save the Bay” has galvanized Will Baker most of his life. As he wraps up four decades at the helm of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, he points to what’s improved and what hasn’t, Pennsylvania’s foot-dragging on the bay clean-up--and the late governor William Donald Schaefer’s wistful assessment that he had thought it would be easier to Save the Bay:

“Our elected officials have all thought that it would be easier and they have failed to follow the science and realize the fundamental changes that need to occur to save one of the nation’s greatest national resources, the Chesapeake.”

Plus Bay Journal environmental reporter Tim Wheeler explains ‘forever chemicals’ and why they’re in our water.

Links: Forever chemicals in MD and PA drinking water, Forever chemicals and fish consumption warning, Contamination at Naval Research Laboratory, Have your water tested.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Social media’s risks and rewards for kids

It’s documented that using social media -- the scrolling, the likes, the shares -- is addictive and seductive. If that’s its effect on adults, what about young kids?Dr. Drew Pate, chief of psychiatry at LifeBridge Health, talks about the different ways social media influences the minds and moods of children. Then Danny LaBrecque, creator of ‘Danny Joe's Tree House’ and ‘Cookies for Breakfast,’ says he’s wary of platforms that have plans to aim content at pre-teens. But he believes the control of a medium has more to do with education and intent than rules and regulations, “Whether it’s a stick, or a stone, or a smartphone, there are all these tools. We decide how to use these tools, not the other way around.”Original air date: October 21, 2021.Links: Danny Joe's Tree House, Cookies for Breakfast

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? They served 36 years in prison, but witnesses knew the truth: the 'Harlem Park Three' were innocent.

After the deadly shooting of a West Baltimore 9th grader in 1983, police and prosecutors coerced the testimony of witnesses. Three innocent young men - known as the Harlem Park Three - were sentenced to life in prison for felony murder. Then, in 2019, they were released.

Jennifer Gonnerman writes about this case for The New Yorker, in a piece titled, “When a Witness Recants.”

And Baltimore City Deputy State's Attorney Lauren Lipscomb describes building the case for exoneration. What makes you feel safe?

Feeling a sense of safety doesn’t encompass just physical security. To feel secure in one’s community also means being accepted, welcomed and seen.

The Jewish Museum of Maryland’s new exhibit, ‘A Fence Around The Torah: Safety And Unsafety In Jewish Life,’ asks visitors to consider how their own safety might make someone else feel vulnerable or dismissed.

We get a preview from artist and curator-in-residence Liora Ostroff and from the Jewish Museum’s executive director Sol Davis:

“Our aim is that it will inspire conversations that will go deeper into the various layers of safety in Jewish American life today.”

Links: Jewish Museum of Maryland

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? As Baltimore heads into another pandemic winter, housing concerns persist

Almost two years into the pandemic, the threat of eviction and homelessness looms large for financially insecure families.

Although Baltimore got millions in federal funds to forestall evictions, Karen Wabeke of the Homeless Persons Representation Project says her group is seeing more and more landlords refuse to take part, "We, along with partners in the Baltimore Renters United coalition, have advocated for the city to begin making direct to tenant payments. We have had clients who were evicted because their landlords refused the funding."

Find information about emergency rental assistance across Maryland here.
