Epigenetics: How trauma affects our genes

Baltimore’s pervasive gun violence both inflames the trauma that shadows many residents … and is caused by that trauma. Dr. Tracy Bale of the University of Maryland med school researches how adverse experiences shape the way our brains work--why, for instance, a child on high alert after gunshots in the neighborhood is not focusing in school. She said she and other scientists are:

“Trying to understand the biology in how we might intervene both in prevention but also in therapy, to think about how that biology has altered how their brain functions in a setting such as school.”

We ask Bale and Shantay Jackson, director of the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, about the interplay of trauma and personal responsibility.

Trauma summit, Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, CDC: How Epigenetics work.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Bowie Mayor Tim Adams on his run for state comptroller

Three decades before he was elected Bowie’s first Black mayor three years ago, Tim Adams started a government-contracting company that now employs hundreds of workers. He contends his experience in business, procurement, and overseeing a municipality give him insight into making sure businesses owned by minority members, women and people with disabilities get a fair shake in state contracts and investing state pension funds.

We ask Adams about his plans for changing how Maryland collects corporate taxes and what kinds of investments it makes.

Learn more about Mayor Adams' campaign here.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Truth and reconciliation for Howard Cooper

Howard Cooper was just 15 when he was lynched at the Towson jail in 1885. Historians say the mob feared the Supreme Court would void his conviction by an all-white jury … for assault of a white girl.

Why will the Maryland Lynching Truth and Reconciliation Commission hold a hearing tomorrow on Cooper’s murder? Commission vice chair Charles Chavis says the pattern of racial terror … stretches to ten African-Americans gunned down in Buffalo, New York this month.

“We have to recognize the importance of valuing and validating the historical trauma and the truths that Black communities have suffered. The healing power of music

Music can soothe, motivate and stir feelings. Can music heal? Dr. Alexander Pantelyat, who runs the Johns Hopkins Center for Music and Medicine, develops therapies and conducts research with patients who have Parkinson’s disease and other ailments. He says it’s not one-size-fits all, and can be tailored to each patient just like other medications.

Plus, Senior Music Therapist Kerry Devlin, who works with adults and children, says that using music for healing may not be the right fit for everyone, but for many:

“It’s an experience that brings something different into their care. It feels really different from some of the other therapies that they move through because of the ways in which it holds space for their experiences, their music and their personhood.”

Links: The Johns Hopkins Center for Music and Medicine, Where to find a music therapist.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Archeology at Baltimore’s Historic Upton Mansion

At 184 years old, Upton Mansion in West Baltimore is a rare example of the Greek Revival style. It’s about to be redeveloped--and to prepare, archeologists explored the site last spring, uncovering artifacts to piece together the lives of people who used to live there. Will Buffalo and Uvalde spur action on gun violence?

The nation is united in grief after mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde.

Last week, President Biden called for change, "I am sick and tired of it. We have to act. And don’t tell me we can’t have an impact on this carnage."

The Gun Violence Archive counts more than 200 mass shootings in the U.S. this year. How the Baltimore Military Muster creates 'camaraderie and connection'

On Memorial Day, as we remember men and women who gave their lives in military service, we also consider efforts to help veterans re-integrating into civilian life. We speak with Shanita Burch, who oversees the VA Maryland Health Care System’s Community Resource and Referral Center, located at the Baltimore VA Annex. Tyrone Johnson, a U.S. Army veteran, went from homeless to living in his own apartment with the help of the center. Check out the the US Department of Labor’s Veterans' Employment & Training Service program, which offers job preparation to veterans, service members transitioning home, and military spouses.

Then, Katie Kilby founded the Baltimore Military Muster to bring veterans together. Board member Michael Desmond describes the isolation he felt returning from Marine Corps deployment, "Everything looked familiar but the people were all different. And so I was kind of restarting my life and just didn’t know anybody.”

Since we recorded this interview in November, the Baltimore Military Muster acquired a lease for a building in the city’s Brooklyn neighborhood and launched a capital campaign with the goal of opening next spring. The Baltimore Military Muster’s next meet-up will take place next Tuesday, June 7th, at 6:30 pm at Checkerspot Brewing Company.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? 'Black Boy Smile:' D. Watkins' memoir in moments

D. Watkins is tired of the lies. Lies about being tough, about not feeling pain … or loss … or rejection.

In his latest book, ‘Black Boy Smile: A Memoir in Moments,’ he shows how he learned to face those lies and push through to the truth. He hopes everyone, especially young Black men and boys, find that strength from his stories:

“I want them to understand that we all have the power to write our own scripts. I want them to understand that even if you’re from a rough environment, you still deserve a happy ending, you deserve to be loved, you deserve people to care about you and you deserve to care about other people.”

Links: D. Mental health and the pandemic: Where to turn

The pandemic has taken its toll on all of us - mentally, physically, emotionally.

Yet its impacts have been especially brutal on some: Andrea Brown, executive director of the Black Mental Health Alliance, talks about particular ways Covid-19 is hitting communities of color and what the alliance is doing to help.

Then psychologist Dr. George Everly, an expert in dealing with disasters, reviews ways this pandemic is especially hard on mental health. He stresses that resilience grows from collaboration:

"These are times not to politicize, not to find reasons to disagree. But these are times to find reasons to come together. The searing story of the enslaved Bell family's fight for freedom

Daniel and Mary Bell tried to use the courts to win freedom for their family, so history shows us more details about them than many other enslaved people in the 19th century. We know that Francis Scott Key, who wrote our national anthem, was one of the whites who lined up against freedom for enslaved people like the Bells.

A new film tells the Bells’ story; we talk to director Kwakiutl Dreher and historian William G. Thomas III. Thomas says, "We need to see this part of American history differently-- enslaved people, not as nameless and faceless, but as real people acting in history, who are clearly attempting to claim freedom from day one of the United States."

And we ask two of Mary and Daniel’s descendants about the strength they draw from this history.

The Bell Affair will premiere at Prince George's Publick Playhouse on Thursday, June 2, 2022. When the pandemic halted concerts, a violinist turned to mystery writing

When the pandemic canceled concerts and postponed recitals, musician Brendan Slocumb had time to try something new. What resulted is a gripping mystery about a stolen violin and a dark family secret that threaten to thwart the dreams of classical violinist Ray McMillian.

Like Slocumb, Ray is African American. While writing Ray’s arduous path to success, Slocumb drew on his own experiences facing prejudice from colleagues and conductors, “They see your name on an application or they see you walk in and the decision is already made. If you performed poorly that would be one thing, but if you really did the work and it's just because of what you look like, that’s what really hurts.”

Brendan Slocumb will be at the Gaithersburg Book Festival on May 21st. Details here.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Emerging long COVID research raises questions about risk factors, variants

More than 80 million Americans have contracted COVID, and as many as one-third were left with lingering symptoms. Obviously other people also got hospitalized that weren’t older, or weren’t male, or didn’t have comorbidities, but the majority of people sort of fit a profile. We don’t have that for long COVID.”

We hear about emerging research into the causes and effects of long COVID.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Jen Michalski's 'You'll Be Fine'

Author Jen Michalski centered her third novel, "You’ll Be Fine," on a magazine writer in her 30’s who’s still carrying baggage from a couple failed love affairs, as she tries to find common ground with her feckless younger brother and deals with a lot of unresolved conflicts with her bohemian mother. And then her mother dies.

Still, Michalski says, she and her editor felt the family was working out the tensions in a predictable way:

“I began to think, what sort of monkey wrench can I throw into their relationship. And just out of the blue this character named Johanna stepped in, like clearly as she walked into the door of my mind. Working for clear water, clean air in Baltimore

Earth Day is a clarion call to care for the planet. Where can that attention be focused in Baltimore?

We talk to Andrew Heyes, who teaches at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, about how heavy metals make their way into the Chesapeake Bay and break down in the salty water - poisoning wildlife. Watch his recent presentation on metals in urban estuaries.

Then, we hear from Shashawnda Campbell and Carlos Sanchez of the South Baltimore Community Land Trust. Campbell sees the need for collective action to save the planet as urgent, "This is a life or death situation. So I think that we can’t undo climate change, we can’t recycle our way out of it, we can’t compost our way out of it. It is what it is right now, right? But what we can do is stop the damages that we keep doing to it."

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Maryland Democratic gubernatorial candidate Doug Gansler on addressing crime, opioid overdoses

Former Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler, a Democrat, is running for governor.

Along with expanding mass transit and supporting tech entrepreneurs, at the top of his priorities is fighting crime. Gansler plans to hire a thousand more police and to place resource officers in schools.

He also wants to keep more people out of jail by creating more alternative court dockets for drug charges.

Gansler says his experience, like holding banks accountable during the 2010 foreclosure crisis, prepared him for this moment, "It's that kind of understanding of how the government works that we need to have to rebuild after Covid, rebuild our economy with a focus on business. I’m an unabashed pro-business, pro-public safety Democrat."

Read more about the Gansler-Hollingsworth platform here.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? 'Shelter: A Black Tale of Homeland, Baltimore'

Lawrence Jackson grew up in West Baltimore. Returning to the city as a “distinguished professor” at Johns Hopkins after building his career elsewhere … called him to navigate the city’s streets and neighborhoods with a discerning eye, calculating what works for his sons and for him, finding answers in the distant as well as recent past, digging into the patrimony he’s earned and what he can hope to pass on. Jackson invites us on the journey in Shelter: A Black Tale of Homeland, Baltimore.

Links: JHU Hard Histories Series, April 24; The Billie Holiday Center for Liberation Arts, April 25; Church of the Redeemer Speakers Series, May 11; Greedy Reads' The Lost Weekend Festival, May 15.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? 'Stumbling Toward Grace' through short stories

In her new collection of short stories, Baltimore writer Rosalia Scalia connects us to people we might never get to know by ourselves. Maybe they’re a lot older or younger than we -- or from a different ethnic group, and without Scalia at our side we wouldn’t realize that their families struggle like ours. Or maybe they’re just nasty, like the crotchety guy in the title story, 'Stumbling Toward Grace.' We learn right away that he’s a bigot who’s cut off his daughter and never met his grandkids. Somehow Scalia helps us see not just his mistakes, but why he’s made them, “There are many people around us who have things about them that are unlikeable but they themselves are not bad people, they’re just flawed.”

Scalia has two events coming up in the Baltimore area. She’ll be speaking at Pandola Learning Center at 914 Stiles St. in Little Italy-at noon this coming Saturday, April 23. And next month, on Sunday, May 29th, she’ll be in conversation with author Raphael Alvarez and poet Dean Smith at Ikaros Restaurant, 4901 Eastern Avenue, in Baltimore’s Greektown neighborhood. That event begins at 5 pm.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Roca: Relentless pursuit and building trust

Roca, the violence intervention program that fixates on young men in Baltimore, is grounded on cognitive behavioral change. That’s why, explains Roca’s community partnership director JT Timpson, its model is to relentlessly pursue young men at risk and build relationships with them -- which takes years. Roca is in it for the long haul:

“Most of these young people, they suffer from distrust. So we really have to provide a way in which we can build a trusting relationship with them that then allows us to challenge them on the behaviors that we see them carrying out each and every day.”

Then Betsy Tolentino of the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services, tells why case workers throughout the state are being trained in Roca’s model … and how it's meeting success.

LInks: Roca, Roca Impact Institute

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch?
Black women’s risk of dying from infections, high blood pressure, blood clots and other treatable conditions during and after pregnancy is more than twice the risk of white women.Dr. Latey Bradford of the University of Maryland’s Family Medicine Clinic says pregnant Black women also confront more health dangers that don’t kill them, but can leave lasting damage. Democratic lawmakers accomplish major goals ahead of sine die

The suspense that typically suffuses the last day of the General Assembly session is missing: Democrats sent important bills to Gov. Hogan a week earlier than normal, so he was under a deadline to deal with them.

One he let become law without his signature mandates deep cuts in carbon emissions. Democrat Paul Pinsky, chair of the Senate environment committee, told his colleagues, "Today, I want to do something somewhat out of character, and that is: I want to publicly thank the governor of Maryland. Yesterday, the governor endorsed the action of the legislature that decided to take the lead on climate change, and I publicly want to thank him, whatever the motivation.

We’ll ask WYPR’s Joel McCord and MPT’s Charles Robinson what else the legislature has done.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch?
