Untangling the legacies of the Great Migration

What does it require to pick up and leave everything and everyone you know … to start a new life. Courage? Fortitude? Determination?

Across six decades, from 1910 to 1970, about six million African Americans made the decision to uproot their lives. They fled the South to points in the north, midwest and western U.S. to escape violence, racism and Jim Crow laws, with hopes to better their lives and those of their children. It was a protracted mass exodus of epic proportion.

The Baltimore Museum of Art is focusing on this arc of history in its latest exhibit: "A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration." We speak with co-curator Jessica Bell Brown, and two featured artists, Akea Brionne and Robert Pruitt.

There are two free admission days coming up, December 15th and January 8th. At 6:30 pm on December 15th, Jessica Bell Brown will host a free conversation with several of the exhibit's artists to discuss Southern culture, belonging, and the process of developing commissioned works of art.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? After a mild infection, a high school athlete developed long COVID. What did it take to jumpstart his recovery?

Long COVID--with symptoms that linger for months like brain fog, dizziness, or heart palpitations --may affect 2 to 10 percent of children who have been infected with COVID, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

In September, a new set of guidelines was published to help pediatricians identify and treat long COVID. We speak with one of the lead authors, Dr. Laura Malone, co-director of Kennedy Krieger’s Pediatric Post-COVID19 Rehabilitation Clinic.

Then, an athletic, academically engaged high school student is suddenly exhausted. His normal schedule of classes and sports and activities with friends shrinks, as he struggles with dizziness, nausea, and brain fog. We speak with Lucas Denault and his mom, Karin, about his recovery from long COVID.

Read more:Kennedy Krieger Leads a Team That Created New Guidelines to Help Physicians Nationwide Treat Pediatric Long COVID

What does long covid treatment look like for kids? "Memento Mori:" A meditation on mortality and memory

Change is an intrinsic part of life--and that includes our impermanence on this earth. Artists of all disciplines embrace mortality -- as well as themes of memory and transience -- in the first exhibit at The Parlor. The Parlor itself is in transition … from funeral home into exhibition space, on North Avenue in Baltimore’s Station North Arts District.

The exhibit is titled Memento Mori, Latin for objects or art that remind us of the inevitability of death, It features more than 50 works by a dozen artists.

We talk with Memento Mori’s curator, Catherine Borg and educator and multimedia artist Edgar Reyes, who is featured in the exhibit.

Links: The Parlor, Memento Mori exhibit , Memento Mori events.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? How six women shaped the course of modern computing

Even those of us who are not very tech-savvy have an idea that there’s a gender gap in technology … but also that women seem to be closing it. What most of is don’t know is much about what women were doing in the early days of the Information Age

Would you be surprised to learn that the very first programmers were women--and they did it on a project generated by U.S. Army’s Aberdeen Proving Ground in the northeast corner of Maryland at the end of World War II?

Lawyer Kathy Kleiman tells the women’s story in her new book: Proving Ground: The Untold Story of the Six Women Who Programmed the World’s First Modern Computer.

Links: Kleiman in Conversation Wed. 11/30 6pm, ENIAC Programmers Project.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? "Bench Talk:" A testament to nature's healing powers

Feeling the sun and the wind on your skin … your eyes drinking in the colors of fall … your ears absorbing the rustlings of a busy squirrel through autumn leaves.

Our guest today wants to bring that experience to as many people as possible. Helping hands, warm conversation

Someone who is socially isolated or lonely is at greater risk for physical or mental health problems--like heart disease, obesity, anxiety, depression, even dementia-- according to the National Institute on Aging. Many seniors who are physically able to age in place do find themselves isolated -- and they may fall between the cracks of services available to them. Maybe they just need a hand with cleaning or groceries or a social visit from a companion who cares.

That’s the mission of Lori’s Hands. The non-profit connects college students with people who are living with chronic illnesses. The students lend a helping hand … as they also bring companionship. We hear from its founder, Sarah LaFave.

Plus, we’ll drop in as two Morgan State University students, Danaysha Samuel and Tabria Cephus, visit their client, Aloma Bouma.

Links: Lori's Hands, Baltimore City Health Dept. Office of Aging Services, Maryland Department of Aging.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Families and food: The power of connection

Steaming hot chicken noodle soup … chewy oatmeal chocolate-chip cookies … apple pie with a perfect crust. Sure, food is a necessity -- but it can also nourish the soul. And what role does food play in our connections to heritage, or to home?

Our guests today, Saima Sitwat and Soo Koo, are featured in a series of videos and essays that explores those questions and more, particularly for immigrants to America. William Still, father of the Underground Railroad

The fuel of the Underground Railroad was its passengers--enslaved people who summoned their courage to flee. B360: Revving up the power of STEM

Brittany Young’s non-profit, B360, gives kids hands-on STEM experience through dirt bikes. As they ride them, fix them and even design them … they learn science, technology, engineering and math.

Young knows dirt bike riding has a reputation … and she intends to transform that, along with the lives of young people. Five years in, her dream is within sight: to create a permanent multi-acre campus:

“I just need people, even if you don’t understand it, to have a bit more empathy, a bit more compassion. Because there are kids that don’t want to be in the streets they want to be in programming -- we know, because we work with them every summer! And so we need a space for us.”

Then we hear all about the buzz around B360 camp!

Links: B360, Ride4Change for all your B360 merch!

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? The Indian Child Welfare Act: What it is; Why it's under scrutiny

Passed in 1978, the Indian Child Welfare Act - or ICWA - is considered by many to be a gold standard because it was ahead of its time in mandating child welfare best practices and goes to great lengths to keep children connected to their heritage.

Beginning November 9th, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments challenging the constitutionality of Indian Child Welfare Act, in place for nearly half a century. The outcome of the case could affect all federal Tribal laws … a potentially catastrophic blow for Native Americans across the country. Why?

We hear from Rori Collins, Public Policy Counsel at the National Council of Urban Indian Health and from Chrissi Ross Nimmo, Deputy Attorney General of the Cherokee Nation, to understand why the ICWA is in place, and why it's under the scrutiny of the Supreme Court.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? 'The Optimistics': finding friendship after an early-onset Alzheimer's diagnosis

While it's rare for Alzheimer’s disease to be diagnosed in people under age 65, it happens. Music-inspired healing

Music can soothe, motivate and stir feelings. Can music heal? Dr. Alexander Pantelyat, who runs the Johns Hopkins Center for Music and Medicine, develops therapies and conducts research with patients who have Parkinson’s disease and other ailments. He says it’s not one-size-fits all, and can be tailored to each patient just like other medications.

Plus, Senior Music Therapist Kerry Devlin, who works with adults and children, says that using music for healing may not be the right fit for everyone, but for many:

“It’s an experience that brings something different into their care.
