Harnessing the immune system to cure cancer

Cancers of the blood -- like lymphoma, leukemia and myeloma--make up about one-tenth of all cancers. The prognosis for patients with blood cancers is being revolutionized by new treatments that harness a patient’s own white-blood cells and turn them into cancer zappers. It’s called CAR T-cell therapy; the FDA approved it several years ago and it's now more available to patients with aggressive lymphoma. For about half the patients who get it, this new immunotherapy is a cure.

We speak with University of Maryland oncology professor Dr. Aaron Rapoport, who directs the transplant and cellular therapy program at the Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. And with nurse Kathy Ruehle, senior coordinator and manager of the program.

The, Sonia Su is cancer-free after three bouts of lymphoma. She shares her story and talks about Kits to Heart, the nonprofit she founded.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch?
Long COVID--with symptoms that linger for months like brain fog, dizziness, or heart palpitations --may affect 2 to 10 percent of children who have been infected with COVID, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

In September, a new set of guidelines was published to help pediatricians identify and treat long COVID. We speak with one of the lead authors, Dr. Laura Malone, co-director of Kennedy Krieger’s Pediatric Post-COVID19 Rehabilitation Clinic.

Then, an athletic, academically engaged high school student is suddenly exhausted. His normal schedule of classes and sports and activities with friends shrinks, as he struggles with dizziness, nausea, and brain fog. We speak with Lucas Denault and his mom, Karin, about his recovery from long COVID.

This interview originally aired in December.

Read more:
Kennedy Krieger Leads a Team That Created New Guidelines to Help Physicians Nationwide Treat Pediatric Long COVID

What does long covid treatment look like for kids? Ben Jealous: "Never Forget Our People Were Always Free"

You may know Ben Jealous as a civil-rights leader -- former president of the NAACP, its youngest president ever when he was named in 2008. You may know him as the Democrat candidate for governor of Maryland in 2018, who failed to unseat incumbent Republican Larry Hogan. Maybe you know that Jealous was born and grew up in California -- in part because his African-American mother and white father left Baltimore after they married; interracial marriage was not legal in Maryland until 1967.

But many of the stories Jealous tells in his new book--including the summers he spent with his maternal grandparents in West Baltimore--are rooted in Maryland. The book is called Never Forget Our People Were Always Free: A Parable of American Healing. 'Lori's Hands' provides assistance and companionship

Someone who is socially isolated or lonely is at greater risk for physical or mental health problems--like heart disease, obesity, anxiety, depression, even dementia-- according to the National Institute on Aging. Many seniors who are physically able to age in place do find themselves isolated -- and they may fall between the cracks of services available to them. Maybe they just need a hand with cleaning or groceries or a social visit from a companion who cares.

That’s the mission of Lori’s Hands. Holiday triggers and how to cope

'Tis the season for big gatherings and plentiful offerings of delectable food and drink. There is a lot of joy in these festivities -- but it can be stressful, too.

For those who struggle with eating disorders -- which is millions of Americans -- holidays can be even more challenging as they, and their loved ones, navigate through the month of boisterous parties and an abundance of potlucks, banquets and more.

We hear about the prevalence of OSFED: ‘Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorder’ from Laurie Wollman, regional assistant director and site director for the Renfrew Center, which offers treatment for eating disorders.

Then JHU professor and clinical psychologist Dr. Joseph McGuire talks about misophonia -- a condition in which irritating sounds, like people chewing or slurping, can trigger a strong emotional response.

Links: Renfrew Center, Misophonia information, OSFED.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? "The Precious Jules" asks what makes a family, family?

The opening chapter of The Precious Jules is bedlam. There is blood, bright red, gushing from a head wound, spattered on the family-room windows. There are children, crying. There is a very pregnant mom, scanning the room to see which of her four children needs her most urgently. One of the brothers is definitely going to need stitches.

These are “The Precious Jules.” In this tale, Jules does not mean diamonds and rubies--it’s the family name. They live in Roland Park, an Irish Catholic brood with secrets and messy complications like most families--and with a mystery that goes far beyond what most families carry.

Shawn Nocher, our guest today, has written a story rooted in Maryland and some of its particular history but also universal in asking, what makes a family, family?

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Why is it so hard to make a vaccine for HIV? Plus, why RSV infections came early this year.

December is HIV/AIDS Awareness month. How far has treatment and prevention come? Why is there still no vaccine against HIV, when it was possible to develop a vaccine against COVID so quickly? What is it about the human immunodeficiency virus that has thwarted scientists for almost 40 years?

For that, we turn to Dr. Robert Gallo, who the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and co-founded the Global Virus Network.

Then, infections and hospitalizations for RSV - respiratory syncytial virus - caught hospital systems across the country off guard. A Maryland Department of Health dashboard tracking RSV shows hospitalizations climbed rapidly from September to October, soaring from the high thirties to a peak of 263. In the last week of November, hospitalizations were down to 76 children.

We speak with Dr. Jason Custer, medical director of the pediatric intensive care unit at the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital, and an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Ballet After Dark: Healing through movement

When a person’s stress system is activated by trauma or crisis it can be life saving. It’s where fight or flight response comes from - and that allows us to get to safety.

But even when safety has been achieved, trauma can take a lasting toll on our physical, mental and emotional health. Research points to how trauma can remain in a body even on a cellular level.

Our guest today helps people who have experienced violence or trauma to release it and get beyond it -- through movement programs offered by Ballet After Dark. We spoke with founder and accomplished dancer/choreographer Tyde-Courtney Edwards.

Links: Ballet After Dark

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? 2022 OSI-Baltimore Community Fellows: Alanna Taylor and Bria Evans

Today we meet two Open Society Institute-Baltimore 2022 community fellows and hear about their projects.

There was a lot was going on in Alanna Taylor’s life a few years ago. She was under so much stress, at one point she fainted in the grocery store. It turned out the episode got her connected to health care … and got Taylor thinking about what women over 40 need to be successful. That was the germ of Taylor’s project 'Bronze Girl Collective.'

And then: when most people look at a bus … they see a mode of transportation. Our next guest looks at a bus and sees … a potential mobile shower unit. Bria Evans tells us about 'Fresh Start Mobile Services' that serve people experiencing homelessness.

Links: OSI Open Society Institute Baltimore Community Fellows, 2022

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch?
