BSO's Marin Alsop: A Gala Send Off

Fourteen years after Marin Alsop took the podium of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra--the first woman to lead any major U.S. orchestra--she’ll conduct her last concert as music director a week from Saturday. Juneteenth honors the day in 1865 enslaved Blacks in Texas learned they were free--and the concert will start with music commissioned from Morgan State professor James Lee III and hip-hop artist Wordsmith:

“This is a bold statement that they’re making allowing James and I to premiere a piece that’s done by a Black songwriter like myself and a black composer [?] and James, and again with this being the Marin festival, this should be about her, it just shows you what she’s about, she’s always about championing others and progress.”

Then BSO vice-president Allison Burr-Livingstone tells about the Marin Festival, and some milestones.

Links: Pratt Library: In Conversation with the BSO; Marin Alsop retrospective events timeline, BSO Gala on MPT, BSO Offstage, Final BSO Sessions, Wordsmith, James Lee III,

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Summer School: A Holistic Approach

A year of online and hybrid learning left many students behind. Summer is the chance to make up for lost time. But how?Carroll County music teacher Rachel McCusker, who serves on the state board of education, describes what it was like on the ground this year. And Dr. Afra Hersi, Professor of literacy education at Loyola University Maryland and incoming dean of the School of Education, says a holistic approach is needed after a school year like no other:

“Because we know all of us are taxed, including the children and the teachers. The way we do education has to change. We have to shift away from the focus on academics to the focus on the whole person. The teachers need it, the students need it.”

Plus, Dr. Shanaysha Sauls, CEO of the Baltimore Community Foundation, on how it assists students and their families.

Links: Baltimore Community Foundation, Summer learning resources Baltimore City, Summer Learning Resources Baltimore County, Maryland Families Engage.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? The Last Mile Of Vaccine Delivery

As mass vaccination winds down, on-the-ground efforts to get shots in arms continue. We speak with Dr. Michelle LaRue of CASA, a nonprofit that works to expand opportunities for Latino and immigrant people. She describes barriers that discouraged Latinos from getting vaccinated, and the success of pop-up clinics across the state. Then, Rev. Dr. Terris King, pastor of Liberty Grace Church of God in Baltimore, says outreach is not about talking people into getting the shot but providing a place for open conversation.Educators for Equity’s Vaccine Hunters/La Caza Vacunas also has pivoted from tracking down appointments to organizing clinics. Are You Ready To Reintegrate?

For months now, people have been asking: when will it end? When can I see my colleagues, family and friends? When can I go on vacation? Now those activities are in sight--yet., many of us feel hesitant. Why?

Clinical psychologist Dr. Michelle Pearce, a University of Maryland-Baltimore professor, tells how behaviors learned during the pandemic become survival skills. They don’t just flip off like a switch:

“We just need to be patient with ourselves. Our brains are really quick to learn threats but we’re slow to unlearn them. So we’ve got to give ourselves a break as we go through this process.”

And we talk about her recent book: ‘Night Bloomers, 12 Principles for Thriving in Adversity.”

Links: Baltimore Sun Commentary, Night Bloomers

Original airdate: 4.14.21

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? The City-Garden Style Of Historic Dundalk

To house workers during World War I, Bethlehem Steel purchased a thousand acres of land and embarked on a plan to develop Dundalk. Amy Menzer, head of the community development corporation Dundalk Renaissance, says the city-garden approach offered green space and functionality. And Meg Fairfax Fielding, past president of the Baltimore Architecture Foundation, describes the unique style of Edward Palmer, who designed neighborhoods in Dundalk and across Baltimore.

You can hear more about the birth of historic Dundalk in five weeks, on July 9, at a virtual event hosted by the Baltimore Architecture Foundation and Baltimore Heritage, in concert with the Maryland Chapter of American Society of Landscape Architects and the Friends of Maryland’s Olmsted Parks & Landscapes.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Fighting HIV/AIDS For Forty Years

Forty years ago, contracting HIV was something close to a death sentence. Much has happened since then, including the discovery and testing of drugs that allow people with HIV to live long lives and engage in fulfilling relationships.

Dr. Sebastian Ruhs has seen the trajectory of HIV treatment almost since the beginning. Now, he’s the Chief Medical officer for Chase Brexton Health Care. He believes it’s possible to put HIV/AIDS behind us:
“We need to wrap up our sleeves again and all work together because we have a chance now, thanks to these medications and the knowledge that we’ve acquired, to end the epidemic.”
Plus, we ask HIV healthcare advocate and educator Carmaletta Able what she's learned.

Links: Baltimore Virtual AIDS Walk and Music Fest, Chase Brexton Healthcare, HIV/AIDS Timeline, HIV/AIDS resources in Maryland.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Disposable PPE Trashes Wildlife

As the coronavirus pandemic begins to recede … millions of disposable masks and gloves that kept people safe are beginning to surface as trash. And are not so safe for wildlife.

Two Dutch researchers -- biologists Liselotte Rambonnet and Auke-Florian Hiemstra -- tell us how wildlife and domestic animals are getting entangled in, and ingesting the refuse -- and it’s happening all over the globe.

“It’s really an enormous problem. And actually billions and billions of people are actually using these masks and gloves. And if just one percent of those lose their face masks, it’s already quite an environmental disaster.” (14)

Plus Alice Volpitta, Blue Water Baltimore Harbor Waterkeeper, updates us on the health of local streams.

Links: The Effects of COVID-19 Litter on Animal Life paper, research overview, report sightings of pandemic trash and wildlife at CovidLitter.com, Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Blue Water Baltimore, BWB volunteering, Herring Run Nursery for native plants.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Violence Prevention Starts In The Shock Trauma

The tide of gunshot, knife, and assault victims to University of Maryland Shock Trauma barely ebbs, not even during the pandemic. More than a third opt for the Violence Intervention Program. A Dance Of Dissonance And Validation

The arts provide a way to make tangible ... feelings and thoughts that otherwise seem too abstract, or even too frightening to acknowledge.

Dr. Misty Borst, a psychiatrist and choreographer, felt an urge to wrestle with the trauma of 2020. In the dance video ‘Dissonance,’ she uses confession-like thoughts and feelings from pandemic health care workers as the soundtrack … for dance moves that echo the pain, love and grief of their words.

"The main point of this is to validate what they are all going through. It’s important to validate it. Because I think if we ignore it and just assume everything is normal again, then we’re just doing a disservice to people.”

Links: 'Dissonance' Video, Full Circle Dance June 6 event 'The Healing Project'

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? The Crisis In Black Maternal Health

Black women’s risk of dying from infections, high blood pressure, blood clots and other treatable conditions during and after pregnancy is more than twice the risk of white women. Dr. Latey Bradford of the University of Maryland’s Family Medicine Clinic says pregnant Black women also confront more health dangers that don’t kill them, but can leave lasting damage. The Future Of The Land Is In Our Hands

The math of the food chain is simple: if no native plants, then no native bugs ... nor birds, nor pollinators ... then no food. It may sound extreme but truth be told, it’s where we’re headed.

Professor Doug Tallamy of the University of Delaware is adamant that it’s not too late to restore the ecosystem. And he says homeowners are poised to make a huge impact as stewards of the land:

“We are going to play a major part in the future of conservation. Because what we do on those yards, our plant choices on those yards, are going to determine whether we are enhancing local ecosystems or continue to destroy them.”

Plus, Farm Alliance of Baltimore Deputy Director Denzel Mitchell tells how the ‘Black Butterfly Urban Farmer Academy’ aims to transform land in Baltimore.

Links: Bringing Nature Home, Farm Alliance of Baltimore, Black Butterfly Urban Farmer Academy, Homegrown National Park.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Our Antibacterial Obsession

Just over a year ago, the need to ‘disinfect’ and ‘sanitize’ became a priority for every American. Mountains of Clorox wipes and gallons of hand sanitizer later, what long-term effects could increased use of antibacterials have on our health? Or for our water?Amy Sapkota, professor of Applied Environmental Health at the University of Maryland, studies links between real-world microbial exposures and infectious disease in humans. Antibacterial agents are necessary, she says, but some are better and safer than others. Original air date: March 31, 2021.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Mary Jane: Coming Of Age In Roland Park, 1975

As Jessica Anya Blau’s latest novel starts, Mary Jane has just turned 14. She’s starting a summer job as a nanny of an endearing five-year-old, just a short walk from her own traditional home in Baltimore’s Roland Park. Mary Jane’s conservative parents think it’s great their daughter will be working for a doctor. They don’t yet know he’s a psychiatrist who has cleared his summer schedule to treat a recovering drug addict who’s a rock star … and whose movie-star wife will also spend the summer. Blau says: “Mary Jane suddenly enters this world of chaos, confusion, rock and roll, group therapy, sex … everything is happening in this house. Virtual Learning Modifications And Students With Disabilities

Platforms like Zoom and asynchronous learning provided a quick fix for students during the pandemic. Jessica Campanile wonders if classroom modifications will stay in place even after Covid-19 restrictions are lifted. Because for people like her, a post-baccalaureate student with disabilities, those are accommodations she had sought for years. She argues there was an aversion to virtual education because people wrote it off as ‘less than.’ But she says, that’s proven untrue: “I think continuing to value these modes of communication just as much as in person education will lead to more accessible and inclusive educational practices."

Plus, we talk with Leslie Margolis, Managing Attorney at Disability Rights Maryland. How Tutoring Could Remedy Pandemic Learning Loss

Reaction To The Chauvin Guilty Verdict

Many who celebrated three guilty verdicts for the white ex-police officer who held a knee on George Floyd’s neck called it a step toward justice. President Biden, on Tuesday evening: "Let’s also be clear that such a verdict is also much too rare. Behind The Mirror: A Pioneer In Autism

With one out of 50 American children diagnosed on the autism spectrum these days, it’s easy to forget that in the middle of the last century the diagnosis was new--and rare. No one knew how to reach these children, locked in repetitive rituals, oblivious to relationships. A remarkable social worker named Jeanne Simons saw the power of attentive patience. She set up a school in Ellicott City.

Even Simons did not know then that she herself was on the autism spectrum. Her memoir, Behind the Mirror, unveils autism from the inside. We speak with her friend and colleague, Sabine Oishi.

“The most important legacy I think was that she proved that these were not children that had to be institutionalized. But these were children that could be treated.”

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? The Origin Of The Black Butterfly

In his book, "The Black Butterfly," former community-health professor Lawrence T. Brown cites a century of policies and budgets he says sapped resources from Baltimore’s African American neighborhoods, forcibly uprooted Black families and triggered generations of trauma.

He calls it apartheid, and contends it was planned and deliberately maintained, "Once you understand that--that it was done intentionally, that it wasn’t random, that it isn’t just some order of natural order of things-- it can be undone intentionally.”

He says undoing it will take deep changes like dismantling the Baltimore police department and ending toxic lead poisoning. You cannot make Black Lives Matter, he argues, unless Black neighborhoods do. This interview originally aired on February 15, 2021.

You can hear more from Lawrence Brown on May 4th at a virtual event sponsored by the Baltimore Teachers Union and the Towson University Office of Inclusion & Institutional Equity.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Celebrating Creativity And Ingenuity Of Black Women

Artists and performers are admired for their imaginative takes on the ordinary. But making something special from nothing is more than an art, it’s an approach to life. Today we hear about ‘we make do//wit wat we got,’ an exhibit that celebrates that ability, especially in Black women.

We talk with multi-disciplinary artist and community caretaker Diamon Fisher, and with artist and exhibition curator Sharayna Ashanti Christmas:

“I always talk about making do wit what we got, it’s just a saying a lot of Black mothers say, is to really talk about just how we’re able to piece things together just from our brilliant imagination, just from the things that are sitting in front of us.”

Links: we make do//wit wat we got, Necessary Tomorrows,

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Overdose Deaths In Maryland Accelerated During The Pandemic

More than 2,700 Marylanders died from fatal drug and alcohol overdoses last year--a record death toll forced up by the powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl. Steve Schuh, director of the Opioid Operational Command Center, says state and local agencies have been working around the pandemic’s hurdles to keep providing treatment: "We’re using telehealth, we’re using mail-order distribution of naloxone, and we are allowing people who are on medication assisted treatment to obtain 30 days' worth of their medication, so they don’t have to return to the medical practice to obtain refills.” Schuh describes who is at greatest risk, and how Maryland is coordinating its response to this alarming increase. Ready To Reintegrate? Here's How

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Black-Owned Businesses Get A BOOST

Retailers and consumers are navigating a challenge: looking ahead to buying and selling post-pandemic while keeping commerce alive now. The Baltimore Downtown Partnership is focused on both, with BOOST, which stands for 'Black-Owned and Occupied Storefront Tenancy.' It pairs Black-owned businesses with vacant storefronts and wraparound services like tech and marketing support.

Delali Dzirasa, himself a successful entrepreneur with his tech company Fearless, talks of the responsibility to nurture new ventures. And Shelonda Stokes, president of Downtown Partnership, describes the kind of business they want to boost: “We want organizations that are going to contribute to downtown, organizations that are going to thrive and employ other people in here. That’s a win. And that’s what we’re looking for.”

Plus, Tanisha Taliaferro, a bold shop owner, tells why she opened Style Haven boutique during the pandemic.

Links: BOOST, Style Haven boutique, Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, Fearless, Hutch, Hack Baltimore.

Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch?
