"It's not what you know but who you know," was certainly true for 10-year pancreatic survivor Thom Mrozek. Thom wasn't sure how public he wanted to be about his diagnosis, but when his daughter, who at that time attended an episcopal school asked at Chapel "can we pray for my dad?" her request started the ball rolling. Thom woke up one morning with a recurring pain that went on for a few days. The pain became worse, and he took himself to urgent care. The location of his pain caused the urgent care Dr to check his heart. His heart looked good, and the Dr felt it was a stomach problem probably an ulcer or acid reflux. He was given some medicine and told to follow up with his Primary Care doctor. Thom went to his internist who ordered a series of tests. Thom, standing in front of his office received a phone call from his Dr "Thom it's your pancreas, stop eating!" that comment lead to a "six-week testing treadmill." Show Notes I have heard it said that the “road to success” can be a torturous journey. Truthfully, I have heard it said that the “road to success” can be a bloody path. I can identify with that. First of all, we must face all sorts of external roadblocks such as the demands of other people, saturated markets, finances, and dozens of other obstacles. Today, however, we are not going to talk about external obstacles but, rather, internal obstacles—the ones we often feel almost helpless in managing. I’m thinking about the fear failure and the need to feel like you must somehow “measure up” to your own outrageous standards. Show Notes On our show today my special guest, Mark Holbrook, and I will discuss the issues around the recent (and troubling) decline in church attendance in the United States over the past 20 years. For instance, in the year 2000 70% of Americans claimed to attend some kind of church, and just 20 years later, in 2020, that number has dropped from 70% to 47%--a 23% decline in just 20 years! That is a very significant decrease. Now… I have a few ideas on the subject, and I can’t wait to discuss them with Mark Holbrook, who is an enormously informed “lay scholar” of the biblical text and an elder at Grace Church of Orange CA. I want to speak with Mark because he is an evangelical conservative with a deep love of people and an even deeper love of the work of God in the church. So… what accounts for this decline in church attendance? Has the church failed its people? Has the very liberal American lifestyle played a role? Or does it have something to do with the influence of media and politics—neither of which is very “pro-church” today. I think it is mostly likely the influence of all three in addition to many other factors that account for a withdrawal from “organized religion.” And there’s another topic for today: are people leaving God or organized religion?
