S2 Ep 6The Power Of Sound Healing (Interview With The Bell Garden) | O Lala! (In the Dungeon) S2 #6

E

Today we have Rick Plautz, owner and operator of the Bell Garden. The Bell Garden is a wellness business and sound bath facilitator in RVA combining quartz crystal bowls, curated music, and vocal toning to create a profoundly relaxing meditative experience.Rick started holding sound baths in December of 2021 at Triangle Rock Club - and still does once a month. But he now holds them all over town in yoga studios, reiki centers, and privately in clients' homes. In 2018 while he was meditating to music he began humming - and promptly fell asleep. When he woke up he had an image in his head of sitting on a large concert stage, ringing a crystal bowl and singing a note in front of a crowd of hundreds. This image has led him to where he is today. We also discuss local RVA celebrities, our favorite restaurants of the week, and more!Support Rick:[email protected] Reiki Healers in RVA:Shekina - holds ecstatic dancesYogi J Miles - yogaJulian J. E

Today we interview somebody we know you have seen if you've been to MPM Tiki Bar on a Friday night. We are joined by Shawn Speake – one half of an infamous duo known for hosting the best and dare I say “littest” Karaoke show at MPM Tiki Bar and The Beach House on Broad. Olivia met Shawn on a random Monday night when she got happy hour drinks with a friend. She didn't expect to stay out after midnight on a work-night, but she did because of Shawn's energy. Shawn is particularly amazing with his karaoke hype man skills, rapping ability, and dance moves. His fashion is also unbeatable.Shawn Speake is a one-man rap cover band and performing artist. You might know him as Shawn Michael – the name he went by for years as an on-air talent at Power92FM in RVA. Shawn has been a radio DJ and an actor on several shows on Amazon, Netflix, and even some Christmas movies that you can find at Walmart.During COVID, SPEAK produced 137 music tracks. He recently enrolled at the reverse engineering program on mastering.com with the pursuit to become a music engineer and self producing artist.Speak and his friend DJ Reflex recently opened for Nelly at the Meadow Event Park in Doswell in August. Tune in to hear crazy Shawn ~speake~ (no pun intended) more about his music, his acting career, and more. You'll even hear him spit a few bars at the end of the episode! Today's guest is Jay Brown: owner, operator, band leader, lead vocalist, tenor saxist, washboard-ist, and tenor banjoist of the swingin' RVA vintage jazz band Grace Street Seven! You might have seen him and his bandmates perform at The Verdant Lady or perhaps at a local wedding or two. You also might have seen him perform in the other band he manages: Triple Crossing Jazz Project. The best part about both of these bands, in our opinion, is that they truly cultivate an experience through their music, fashion, and theatrics that puts you back in time and truly makes you feel like you're in the 1920s. They go all out on their theme!Jay goes into detail about how he fell in love with Jazz in the 3rd grade (The Pink Panther theme song), how he found himself in Richmond, his passion for World War II history, dance styles of the 1920/30s and much more. S1 Ep 8PLF's DjGON (Burning Man DJ) | O Lala! (In the Dungeon) #8

E

Have you ever been to a First Friday event in Richmond? If so, you've probably seen a group of artists hula hooping with fire as well as other flow props to some really awesome DJs. That group is from Party Liberation Foundation (or PLF): a local burner group in our city. What is a burner group you ask? In this episode you will find out with the help of today's guest: Dj GON! 🔥 🔥Dj GON, or Ryan, or Bohman, or Nyan, started DJing at the ripe age of 17 with a group known as Project Chalk. He would party hop with his friends DJing various parties in Wilmington, NC. He talks about attending his first local burn called "Mayhem" where people could get lost in this magical maze full of festival whimsy. He put his DJ setup in the middle of the maze and people would get lost or "gone" trying to find the music. That's how he coined the name GON. Ever since then he was hooked on burn culture and the magic it seems to cultivate.Through attending burns, Bohman was introduced to PLF and was blown away by their fire FX. He was inspired, to say the least! He started getting to know the group and they invited him to their exclusive burn called "Transformus" and it "rocked his mind." He immersed himself into their community and eventually made the move to RVA to be an official member on their BOD.Tune in to this episode to learn more about the important life principles PLF brings to RVA, DAVINA the car, MAPS, Burning Man, burn culture as a whole, how to get a "burner name", and life as a DJ.Here is a link to all of the ways you can follow and support Ryan here:DjGON's LinktreeShout Outs:Party Life Liberation FoundationExothermia Fire TroupeTransformusBurning ManIgniteDavid Morton PhotographyBar WestGallery 5FloydFestThe Booth FairyLewis GinterThe Aubrey Marcus PodcastHelpLearn how to administer NARCANAddiction helpFollow us!

Welcome back! Olivia and Liz had an absolute BLAST at the Church Hill Irish Festival two weeks ago. They walked from Liz's house, sipped on some drizzanks, watched bag pipers, Irish step dancers, several great bands such as the Rolling Stone's cover band, Mother's Little Helpers, tried copious amounts of soda bread, etcetera etcetera. Liz took a trip to Asheville, NC and Olivia took two trips to RVA's Jungle Room for some house music. Lee clogged his arteries with a greasy burger from Pop's Dogs & Ma's Burgers. 🍔😃Enough about them though. This week's episode features RVA's one and only @miss_elaine_neous, Richmond's small biz hype woman! With over 11K followers, Elaine has made finding something fun to do in the city on any given day of the week extremely convenient with her mini guides. S1 Ep 6Nate Oyler's Sunshine State Of Mind | O Lala! (In the Dungeon) #6

E

The girls have sunshine on their mind... and that could be because of their special guest on this week's episode: Nate Oyler! 🌞Nate (from Nate Oyler Music) is a solo singer/songwriter in RVA blessing wineries (like New Kent Winery) and music halls with his gritty beachy/southern rock/country style. Today, he blesses the podcast with an exclusive early release of his new single, "Sunshine State Of Mind" (officially out April 7th). Nate speaks about what his first time was like working with professional studio musicians who helped perfect his track. The musician goes into detail about his early years in California, Kentucky, and eventually RVA - where he was a high school freshmen entering a brand new school where he knew no-one. Talk about a reinvention opportunity, if you ask the girls! 😂Nate speaks about growing up extremely shy and forcing himself to take communications classes and drama to overcome this. He discusses playing in his first band with his dad and brother where Nate played guitar. He admits he didn't officially start gigging and taking singing seriously until his mid 30s with the all-original RVA band "Snake Oil Salvation." It just goes to show it is never too late to start anything!Nate is also a full-time fire fighter who has been involved in several rescue situations. He talks about fire house pranks, the pole, and some interesting RVA firefighting history. Shoutout to all of our firefighters and first responders - we love you! ❤️Other topics include international thespians (fo lyfe), FREE BIRD, signing tits, Chris Gaines, tots, drivin' all night to yo baby down in Florida, moon walking, Lee giving it to Nate, and surprise surprise - nobody guesses Lee's name.Make sure you listen to Nate's single, "Sunshine State Of Mind," on April 7th. Saint Patrick's Day came and went and the girls discuss their past week's shenanigans. Liz had a blast at Rosie Connolly's with her friend from Italy. Olivia had an awful time at Shamrock the Block and plays some funny audio she recorded during the event. The real attraction in this episode however, is a recognizable character from the Short Pump Pour House's dance floor. S1 Ep 4Lee: The Lewd Leprechaun | O Lala! (In the Dungeon) #4

E

Top of the mornin' to ya! ☘️ 🌈 In this week's Irish episode, the girls talk about their past shenanigans such as seeing The Fredd's reunion gig, Emo Karaoke Night, brunch at 3 Monkeys, and The VA Wine Expo. Enjoy an off-site recording they drunkenly took for you lads and lassies at the wine event where they talk about their favorite vendors (such as King Family Vineyards and Waterman Spirits). Also enjoy Lee being a "Little Horse." 🐴Following the recap, the pod-mates go into some interesting Richmond Irish History. Ever heard of the "roly-poly" Irishman; John Francis O’Grady? Tune in to hear more about this silly, progressive, hardworking Richmonder from the early 1900s who brought the city its first St. Paddy's Day Parade that involved skunks. S1 Ep 3He Brought $20 to a Strip Club | O Lala! (In the Dungeon) #3

E

The girls are back to talk about the Super Bowl and the tragic loss of the Eagles (wah!). They discuss their Valentine's Day dates (Toto and 4 course meals). But the real attraction in today's ~explicit~ episode is the special guest appearance by their good friend Dave.Dave is a seasoned Richmond guitarist who has performed in several successful bands around Richmond - one of them currently being Guinevere (https://www.facebook.com/GuinevereRVA/). The girls were once vocalists in his Journey/Foreigner cover project and can attest to his art of shredding on his Stratocaster.Any-who, Olivia and Liz interview Dave about his musical history which started in New Hampshire when he was just a 15 year old boy inspired by ACDC's guitarist Angus Young. He talks about his first garage band with his sister on vocals and playing at parties on the third floor of an old uninsulated house. It was there they wrote their first hit song, "The Cat Shit On The Floor" (based on true events). Genius!Other topics include Richmond venues where Dave has played (old and new), strippers, COXSACKIE!, Slash, a biker gang encounter, Ozzy Osbourne, a swearfest, MONKEY MAIL DOT COM, Dave's Jessica Alba doll, Virginia HAM HAM HAM!, castrato, Olivia's Gregorian chant, guitars, live patients shipped to the morgue, HIT HER GRANDPAW!, and they all guess Lee's name.Catch Dave in Guinevere on April 8th at Flatrock Sports Bar and Grill in Powhatan, VA.Richmond peeps! Need a space to record? Want to learn how to play guitar? Do your lyrics need music? Our own Lee of Dungeon Studios can help. S1 Ep 2Basketball, Aliens, & Beer | O Lala! (In the Dungeon) #2

E

Welcome back! Liz & Olivia share what they've been up to in RVA since the last pod. They attended The Pink Floyd Laser Spectacular, a hotdog-less U of R basketball game, and a fly as hell birthday bash at their fave bar. They discuss a recent true crime case in Richmond (Pakistani woman help captive for 12 years!) and talk about the infamous TV head prank from 2019. Other topics include clowns, that spider life, things they bet ya didn't know about Richmond (RVA was the first city to have canned beer?!?), secret underground tunnels in the city, UFOs, Alaska, and much more. And of course, they didn't guess Lee's name.
