One of the most grateful decisions we have made was starting this podcast. We have met such incredible individuals that have gone through the darkest of path’s we could ever imagine and have come out through it full of courage, joy and humbleness. This episode is one of those episodes. We have to warn you that it gets really emotional and touching. Jake gets to sit down with one of his longtime friends Erik Riekenberg. Ep 110Podcast Episode: Couples vs Individual Therapy
When problems threaten to swamp your marriage, that's a vital time to reach out for help. At the same time, the kind of professional you go to for help makes a huge difference. If your purpose is to work on your relationship, then it is better to come together (an exception is when there is physical abuse – then couples therapy is contraindicated). A good couple’s therapist will have the ability to work within the relationship dynamic in ways that just aren’t there when a person is in therapy by themselves. Research has shown that individual therapy with the goal of working on the relationship isn’t effective. In fact, it can lead to separation. Todays episode Jake deals with these two therapy types. He helps us see the importance of having your partner at your therapy sessions. If unbalancing a relationship, that is, fostering asymmetry of growth from treating just one spouse, can lead to the toppling of a marriage, that's a seriously bad outcome. Ep 104Podcast Episode: Emotion Coaching: One of the Most Important Parenting Practices
When our children get upset, most of us get upset too. If the child is angry at us, we feel defensive; like the child's feelings are unwarranted. If he's upset at something else, we want to make him feel better, to make the emotions go away as quickly as possible. The art of emotion coaching is a parenting technique that helps children understand their feelings. When parents emotion coach, their children learn how emotions work and how to react to feelings in healthy ways. This starts by recognizing your child’s feelings. Many parents are able to see the positive emotions a child expresses, but drawing close to a child who is angry or sad can take some practice. While it takes effort to teach your child about feelings and appropriate behaviors, it is time well spent. Your relationship with your child will be stronger and your child will be more prepared for the challenges life can bring. In today's episode we are joined by Amanda Green, who works with Jake at Zephyr Wellness as a Marriage and Family Therapist. Amanda's focus is on children, age three to 10 in play and has knowledge in creating behavior plans to help parents out at home with their children. Today’s show is brought to you by Audible. Ep 103Podcast Episode: Toxic Positivity vs Validation and Hope
We have all seen toxic positivity in action, it’s those Instagram posts that say “Good vibes only” or “Just be positive.” These posts fail to recognize that we are meant to feel all emotions, “positive” and “negative”, which is the healthier route. Toxic positivity strips someone away of the validation they deserve and leaves them feeling ‘guilty’. Guilty for ‘contributing to their problems’, for ‘not being strong enough’ to get better by themselves. Instead of searching for ways to deal with the situation, people may start to doubt themselves, at a time when they need their confidence the most. In today's episode Jake is joined by Whitney Hawkins Goodman, LMFT and owner of The Collaborative Counseling Center. Where they have a chat about ‘Toxic positivity’, how to avoid it and lean more to emotional acceptance. Today’s show is brought to you by Audible. Anyone who has surfed knows that much more goes into this activity than the ability to spot a wave and stand on a board. Not only does this sport work the entire body through extensive paddling and balance, it also requires patience and surrender. There is a team in South Africa who are doing some incredible work in the rural areas. They have created a program to educating underprivileged kids on wildlife and the effects of pollution. This is just the tip of their program. Every summer they go out and teach these kids about ocean conservation through surfing. In today’s episode we had the pleasure and honor talking to the founder of Small Steps. Jake and Jürgen talk about the impacts of surfing in the rural areas of South Africa and go deep on his journey in life and what gave his the inspiration to begin this great project. Ep 84Podcast Episode: A Principle of Intentionality
Intentionality is a conscious state of being in the present moment. One of the central elements of social cognition, and people's folk theory of mind in particular, is the concept of intentionality. It structures people’s perception of behavior from infancy on, grows to a complex conceptual framework that links behavior to mind, and underlies distinct information processing paths in the explanation, prediction, and moral evaluation of behavior. The concept of intentionality itself may be a very complex feature that incorporates the different traits, and perhaps more. Join us today as Jake dives in with anecdotes and personal examples of intentionality. Hope you enjoy the podcast and please go ahead subscribe and give us a review of our show. Ep 82Podcast Episode: Finding Your Spiritual Life Path
The meaning of life has been the query of humanity since ancient times. And still today we are no closer to knowing how to find our spiritual calling than they were! Spirituality is a broad concept with room for many perspectives. In general, it includes a sense of connection to something bigger than ourselves, and it typically involves a search for meaning in life. Ep 81Podcast Episode: Motivation: Psychological Factors Behind Behavior
In today's episode we discuss motivation. It is defined as the process that initiates, guides, and maintains goal-oriented behaviors. Motivation is what causes you to act, whether it is getting a glass of water to reduce thirst or reading a book to gain knowledge. While motivation and emotion can be intricately linked, they are two fundamentally different things. Motivation describes the wants or needs that direct behavior toward a goal; in contrast, an emotion is a subjective state of being that we often describe as a feeling. Emotion and motivation are linked in several ways: both influence behavior and can lead us to take action, and emotion itself can act as a motivator. For example, the emotion of fear can motivate a person to leave a stressful situation, while the emotion of happiness can motivate a person to be more productive on a project that reinforces that emotion. Similar to respect and trust, it is up to us to extend these to people. Is it really necessary for us to require people to ‘earn’ these things from us with an arbitrary deed? On the flip side, maybe you think certain people in your life are requiring too much from you. Everyone puts things off until the last minute sometimes, but procrastinators chronically avoid difficult tasks and deliberately look for distractions.
