Ep 142Hughes Tunes: Pretty In Pink
EIn our final episode on the music of John Hughe's iconic 80's films, we end with Pretty In Pink. Music is the backbone of this film in so many ways: the main character works at a record store, a bar with live music is a popular hangout spot for her and her friends, and of course who can forget Jon Cryer's lip-sync to Otis Redding's "Try A Little Tenderness"? And just like the films before it, Hughes' passion for music (especially new wave and post-punk) is behind every track featured on this iconic soundtrack. We listen to a few tracks from the film with an accompanying track from each artist. Tracklist: Talk Back - Rudy Psychedelic Furs - Pretty In Pink Psychedelic Furs - Mr. Jones Jesse Johnson - Get To Know Ya Jesse Johnson - Just Too Much New Order - Thieves Like Us New Order - Lonesome Tonight Teebs - Studie (feat. Ep 141Hughes Tunes: Weird Science
EWe continue our deep dive into the music behind John Hughe's iconic 80s comedies with the next stop on our journey through Michael Anthony Hall's puberty: Weird Science. Everybody remembers the title track to this shenanigans-a-plenty 1985 comedy (it is Oingo Boingo after all). But what about the other tracks featured in the film? We listen to a couple of tracks off the film in this week's installment of Hughe's Tunes. Tracklist: Oingo Boingo - Weird Science Ira Newborn - Lost On The Internet Killing Joke - Eighties Killing Joke - Europe The Del Fuegos - Nervous And Shakey The Del Fuegos - Out For A Ride Toro Y Moi - Ordinary Guy (feat. Ep 140Hughes Tunes: Sixteen Candles
ENext up on our batch of episodes devoted to the music of John Hughes iconic 80s films, we explore the one that started it all: Sixteen Candles. The soundtrack to this film is what would happen if you hit shuffle on Hughes' iPod (or more accurately what you'd hear on that sweet mixtape he made you in 1984). Crammed into its 93 minute runtime is over 30 songs, from Bowie to The Godfather theme. On this episode, we focus on some of the lesser known artists Hughes highlighted in this iconic (and often cringe-worthy) 80s teen comedy. Tracklist: Kajagoogoo - Kajagoogoo (Inst.) Ep 139Hughes Tunes: Ferris Bueller's Day Off
ETo kick off our batch of deep dives into some of the iconic soundtracks of John Hughes beloved 80s films, we start with a film that finds its main character singing "Twist and Shout" from the top of his lungs on a parade float in the middle of Chicago. From Wayne Newton to The English Beat, the soundtrack for Ferris Bueller's Day Off was so eclectic that Hughes didn't commercially release it as he had his previous films. But that only generated more interest around the artists and songs featured on the film, and created a challenge for lovers of music and the film to seek out this music on their own. On this episode, we chat about some of those artists and play some tunes of theirs that weren't featured in the film. Tracklist: Sigue Sigue Sputnik - Love Missile F1-11 Ira Newborn - Cameron In Bed / Ferris Goes Hawaiian Yello - Oh Yeah Yello - Blue Nabou The Flowerpot Men - Beat City The Flowerpot Men - Melting Down On Motor Angel Zapp - Radio People Zapp - I Only Have Eyes For You Yonderboi - Eyes For You Jonathan Richman - I Was Dancing In The Lesbian Bar Octo Octa - Not Sure What To Do (Variation Zoning 4) The Dream Academy - Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want (Inst.) Ep 138Dad Tunes: Seal
EIf you walked into a dance club in 1991, you may have heard Seal's first big single "Killer": the acid house crossover hit with DJ and producer Adamski. And if you sat through the Batman Forever credits in 1995, you heard a completely different sound with "Kiss From A Rose". Between his first two records (both self-titled), the number of musicians that sat in the studio for these recordings with Seal is staggering, and his sound and style is just as varied and wide-ranging. Tracklist Seal - Kiss From a Rose Seal - The Beginning Seal - Bring It On Seal - Dream in Metaphors Seal - Fast Changes Mk.gee - dimeback Benedek - On My Way LL Burns - Get Me Back in the Game This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network. Ep 137Dad Tunes: Gloria Estefan
EOn this episode we look at one of the groups that stood out amongst the trove of hard rock, classical, and jazz that our father exposed us to growing up: Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine. It wasn't until their 8th studio album, Eyes of Innocence, that the group started making music aimed at the American market. Their first hit single came in 1985 with their crossover signature track "Conga", which peaked at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 list. We let the rhythm get us as we listen to a couple tracks from Primitive and Let It Loose and discuss how the group so successfully blended the trends of 80s pop with their tropical, latin-infused sound. Tracklist: Gloria Estefan - Rhythm Is Gonna Get You (intro) Gloria Estefan - Movies The Power Station - Some Like It Hot Gloria Estefan - Let It Loose Gloria Estefan - 1-2-3 Equip - Druids (Encounter) R.A.P. Ep 136Dad Tunes: Dire Straits (with guest Tyler Darling)
EIn our 4th installment of Dad Tunes, we chat about Dire Straits' self-titled debut record with help from our good friend (and possibly long-lost triplet) Tyler Darling - host of I Turn My Podcast On. We dig into J.J. Cale's blues and rockabilly-infused Tulsa sound that was a huge influence on Mark Knopfler's unique guitar tone and vocal style that made Dire Straits such a unique entry into the rock landscape of the late 70s. Tracklist Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing J.J. Ep 135Dad Tunes: Gino Vannelli
EIn our continued exploration of the music our father listened to, we listen to a the one-and-only Gino Vannelli. Combining jazz and pop with lyrics that read like a romance novel, at first glance Gino was your classic crooner. The tight pants and chest hair certainly made his album art leap off the shelves to anyone who may be interested at such a glorious sight. But visual stimuli aside - the music paints it's own picture. We listen to a track off his 1975 record Storm at Sunup and his 1978 record Brother to Brother. Tracklist Gino Vannelli - Brother to Brother Gino Vannelli - Storm at Sunup Gino Vannelli - The Evil Eye Fontaines D.C. - Televised Mind Vein - Errorzone Vein - Virus://Vibrance Gin Vannelli - I Just Wanna Stop This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts. Ep 134Dad Tunes: Van Halen
EEveryone knows Van Halen: the finger-tapping, spandex-wearing, high-kicking glam metal band from the 80s that took the world by storm with some of the biggest hits in rock history. On this episode, we hope to share a few tracks that you may have overlooked if you tuned in to Halen for just the songs you heard on the radio (or saw on MTV for that matter). We also ask the age-old question of whether Van Halen truly is a metal band, and discuss the time we saw them in 2008 where we ultimately conclude that you really don't have to wear the spandex anymore David. Tracklist Van Halen - Runnin' With The Devil Van Halen - Loss of Control Queen - Stone Cold Crazy Pantera - Fucking Hostile Van Halen - Secrets Van Halen - Girl Gone Bad Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains The Same Hong Kong Express - Waiting Koi Child - Touch 'Em This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network. Ep 133Dad Tunes: The Cars - Self-Titled
ETo kick off our batch of episodes devoted to all the music our dad listened to when we were growing up, we talk to the man himself about his time as a radio DJ in the 70s and 80s. And on top of that, we listen to some music off The Cars debut record and talk bout how perfectly they merged new wave, punk, and synth rock. We even dig up a tune from Orr and Ocasek's prior folk-rock Crosby, Stills, and Nash-esque band, Milkwood. Tracklist: The Cars - Bye Bye Love The Cars - Moving In Stereo The Cars - All Mixed Up Milkwood - Dream Trader Todd Rundgren - Hello It's Me Yellow Magic Orchestra - Light In Darkness Sebastian Maschat & Erlend Øye - Bad Influence The Smashing Pumpkins - You're All I've Got Tonight This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts. Ep 132"Record Store Zombie" - A Conversation With Mark Burke
EWe end our look back at the music of our youth by talking with the man that sold us those records: the one and only Mark Burke, current owner of Mad World Records in Denton, TX. With nearly 20 years experience owning and operating record shops (and roughly 7 years managing them before that), Mark gives us an inside look at what it takes to run a record store. We also chat about his years in the Denton punk scene where he organized house shows for acts like At the Drive-In, Braid, and Jimmy Eat World. Tracklist Miserable - Damned To Love You Ritual (feat. Ep 131Flickerstick: How the VH1 Reality Champs Spawned Our Love for Live Music and Superfandom
ETo wrap-up our batch of episodes devoted to the albums of our youth, we go back to the origin and talk about one of the first bands we truly connected with. If you caught VH1's reality show Bands On The Run back in 2001, you may remember the crowned champions, Flickerstick. Their drunken antics and overall attitude toward the hoops they were asked to jump through helped them gain a devoted fanbase. That combined with the energy and passion of their live performances gave them the edge they needed to win the contest, and we were there for every second of it. Today we discuss their debut record, Welcoming Home The Astronauts, and how the power of an amazing live performance had such a lasting impact on budding music-lovers who are still talking about it 20 years later. Ep 130Garage Rock Evolved: Phantom Planet's Self-Titled Re-Invention
EPhantom Planet was once most notably known as the group that sings that song from The O.C. (you know, the one that goes "California, here we come!"). But on their 2004 self-titled record, they traded in those melodic, poppy song structures for a more frenetic, fuzz-driven garage sound. We argue in this episode that this is perhaps one of the greatest garage rock records to come out of the early 2000s (certainly one of the most overlooked and under-appreciated), with its impassioned vocal performances, pummeling drums and bass, and guitar riffs that could punch through a wall. Tracklist Phantom Planet - Big Brat Phantom Planet - Nobody's Fault Phantom Planet - Jabberjaw Phantom Planet - After Hours Phantom Planet - You're Not Welcome Here Phantom Planet - The Meantime The Spirit of the Beehive - hypnic jerks Arms of Tripoli - Edwards Edward This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network. Ep 129Ethan Durelle - White Knuckles On Turned Wheels (with special guest Joel Fruth)
EIf you were a teenager in the 2000s and grew up near Dallas, TX, you probably went to your fair share of live music in Deep Ellum like we did. On this week's episode, we chat with the former General Manager and part owner of The Door and The Prophet Bar, Joel Fruth. He's got some first hand stories to share about the one and only Ethan Durelle, the underrated and extremely talented post-punk indie outfit from Waco, TX. Their debut record, White Knuckles On Turned Wheels, and the sound they cultivated can best be described, as Joel puts it: "Radiohead and Death Cab for Cutie were married, and then Death Cab divorced Radiohead and married Incubus." What more could possibly be said beyond that? Tracklist: Ethan Durelle - I Get Shot In Every Film I'm In Ethan Durelle - Accidental Killers Ethan Durelle - Marionette Pinegrove - Old Friends Day Rhythm, Thanya Iyer - Honest Echo JUNE OF 44 - Cut Your Face Holy Fiction - Iron Eyes This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts. Ep 128Mae: Destination: Beautiful
EAs we've covered heavily over the past few weeks, emo bands were a dime a dozen in the early aughts. Mae's debut record, Destination: Beautiful, was the exception to the rule. Dave Elkin's beautiful vocals layered over textures of acoustic guitar and lush piano make this record beautifully varied through its 11 tracks, with lyrics that flirt with emo cliches yet feel refreshing and sincere. If you missed it the first time around, Destination: Beautiful is a must-listen for fans of emo music from this era. Ep 127mewithoutYou - [A→B] Life: When Poetry and Post-Hardcore Meet
EmewithoutYou's debut record [A→B] Life defies the genre labels one might be eager to place on it. Singer Aaron Weiss' poetic lyricism and spoken word-style vocals can sometimes feel emo, but his philosophical themes go so much deeper than emo's hallmarks of self-loathing and insecurity. And the impassioned screams and neurotic mumbling sprinkled so effectively throughout his vocal performances leave the listener just as emotionally gutted as the words Weiss is punctuating. Musically the rest of the band weave punk, post-hardcore, and grunge throughout the record in such a way that makes their sound just as varied and sporadic as the vocal performances. For fans of all of the above: this record is certainly one to put on and fully engage with. mewithoutYou - Bullet To Binary mewithoutYou - The Ghost mewithoutYou - Everything Was Beautiful And Nothing Hurt mewithoutYou - (A) mewithoutYou - Gentlemen Narrow Head - Night Tryst Smokey Robinson - Baby That's Backatcha mewithoutYou - Wolf Am I ( And Shadow) This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast networ, Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 126Emery: The Weak's End
EContinuing our exploration of the music from our youth, we crank the angst to 10 and go full emo with a listen to Emery's debut album, The Weak's End. While the record leans more toward the poppy, melodic side of the emo spectrum, the sporadic scream and aggressive attack of the 3 guitar players pack an effective punch when utilized. And while some would say that side of this record is under-utilized, we argue that it is what makes the record so effective: the emphasis is on the melody and the clean, non-whiney vocal delivery that is perfectly accentuated by the well-placed screams that are typically associated with emo music. So comb your bangs over your left eye, paint your fingernails black and join us for a trip down Angst Avenue. Ep 125Sidetrack: Mutoid Man
EOn this week's Sidetrack episode, we listen to Cave In frontman Stephen Brodsky's side project, Mutoid Man. Unlike the polished sound that Cave In achieved with Antenna, the music of Mutoid Man (freed from the constraints of a major label) is Brodsky unchained. An excellent blend of psychedelic and stoner rock, Mutoid Man is a crank up and tune out type of band that is unlikely to disappoint. Ep 124Antenna: Cave In's "Sell Out" Space-Rock Masterpiece
EFresh off the success of their 2000 release Jupiter, Cave In signed to major label RCA to record their next album. The result was Antenna: a masterful blend of alternative, progressive, and space rock. While largely met with criticism from the band's fan base for its polished and commercial sound, the truly record stands out for its epic textures and sweeping song structures. Ep 123Sidetrack: Hey Mercedes - Frowning of a Lifetime
EAfter the dissolution of Chicago-based Braid, Bob Nanna and Todd Bell took their post-hardcore emo sound and added some melody and pop to it. The result was Hey Mercedes - but the change in sound was likely thanks to Vagrant records. While there are a couple of stand-out tunes on their debut Everynight Fire Works, we conclude along with many of the critics that this album is largely forgettable. But if you're looking to scratch that emo-pop nostalgic itch like we are right now - this album will do just that, even if only for a few minutes. Ep 122Emo Pop Perfected: Hot Rod Circuit's Sorry About Tomorrow
By the time 2002 came around, "emo" had gone mainstream. Bands like Jimmy Eat World and Dashboard Confessional had made it to MTV, and paved the way for emo pop's continued success throughout the decade. Having just signed to emo kingmakers Vagrant records, Hot Rod Circuit's 2002 release Sorry About Tomorrow is the perfect representation of what defined that sound. And for the hosts of No Filler, this album represents a defining summer in our youth. On this episode we chat about music's ability to instantly transport you back to a certain time and a certain feeling, and how that emo pop sound of the early aughts has that ability for us in a big way. Ep 121Two-Thirds of Blink 182 Go Dark: Tom Delonge Gets Serious With Box Car Racer
EFor our Sidetrack this week we dive into Box Car Racer, the shortly lived side project of Blink 182's Tom Delonge. During recording sessions of Blink's second studio album, "Take Off Your Pants And Jacket", Delonge began experimenting with different guitar stylings with an acoustic in hand. Coupled with an increasingly grim day-to-day life while recovering from a back injury, Delonge also began writing songs with darker and darker lyrics. With the help of Travis Barker behind the kit, Box Car Racer gave Delonge an outlet to express the darker side of his songwriting. Ep 120What's Our Age Again? No Filler Goes Back To School & Jams Out To Blink-182
EWe kick off our batch of episodes devoted to our awkward teenage years with a look at a band that sings about boners and dysentery: the one and only Blink-182 and their 1999 record Enema of the State. And while the juvenile lyrics, addictive melodies and fast-tempos certainly appealed to a younger crowd, it was perhaps their music videos that catapulted Mark, Tom, and Travis into the mainstream stratosphere. Whether it was streaking through the streets of L.A. in or poking fun at the boy bands that shared the TRL spotlight, the trio was a pretty consistent fixture on MTV's Total Request Live, and solidified Blink-182 as the adolescent kings of pop-punk rock. Ep 119Sidetrack: Post Malone & Co. Give Us A Socially Distanced Proper Nirvana Tribute Concert
EAs we're wrapping up our 90's rock binge, we thought what better way to do it than to share a few of our favorite non-singles from Post Malone's April 24th Nirvana tribute concert. Playing alongside (while maintaining at least 6 feet distance from each other) songwriter & bassist Brian Lee, guitarist Nick Mack, and legendary drummer Travis Barker, Malone & Co. breathe new life into 15 classic Nirvana tracks, some singles, some deep cuts. Ep 118No Doubt: The Beacon Street Collection
EBefore finding global success with 1995's Tragic Kingdom, ska punk darlings No Doubt were going nowhere fast after signing a record deal at Interscope Records. With little support from the label, no access to studios, and a growing list of 60+ songs under their belt, No Doubt took things into their own hands and built a studio in their garage in Anaheim, California. After a long weekend recording, The Beacon Street Collection was born. Join us as we dive deeper into this DIY gem, a slightly heavier, more raw and punk-inspired album than both their previous self-titled and their mega successful Tragic Kingdom, and proving No Doubt's worthiness on the global stage. Tracklist No Doubt - Squeal The Specials - Gangsters Madness - Razor Blade Alley No Doubt - Greener Pastures No Doubt - Move On No Doubt - Snakes Black Sabbath - Electric Funeral No Doubt - By The Way Hum - If You Are To Bloom Midwife - S.W.I.M. Ep 117Sidetrack: Temple of the Dog
EOut of tragedy came a collaboration between two of Seattle's most legendary acts. Lead singer of Mother Love Bone Andrew Wood passed away from a heroin overdose in 1990. His former roommate was none other than Chris Cornell, who wrote a couple of songs as a tribute to his late while touring Europe with Soundgarden. Cornell reached out to former Mother Love Bone bandmates Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard to make a record out of it, who had just recently invited Eddie Vedder to rehearse for their newly formed band Pearl Jam. The result was Temple of the Dog, a snapshot of two massively successful rock bands months before both hit mainstream success. Ep 116Pearl Jam - Ten
EThirty years later and rock fans are still at odds about what qualifies as "grunge" music. But despite Cobain's commentary on the band's underground cred (and their lack of sincerity with the flannel), few would argue Pearl Jam's grunge status and impact on the Seattle scene at the birth of the movement. In 1991, the year that grunge broke, Pearl Jam released their debut Ten just a month before Nevermind. With Mother Love Bone and Green River alumni Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, Eddie Vedder's emotional vocal delivery made the album's dark themes of suicide, depression, and violence that much more impactful and powerful. Ep 115Sidetrack: Army of Anyone
EThree years after the dissolution of Stone Temple Pilots, Dean and Robert DeLeo joined forces with Filter frontman Richard Patrick in 2005 to form the short-lived supergroup Army of Anyone. The band's debut single "Goodbye" peaked at number three on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart, but ultimately the veterans of 90s era grunge and alt rock didn't have the staying power against the nu-metal groups that then dominated the charts. Ep 114Stone Temple Pilots - Purple
EStone Temple Pilots saw huge success with their testosterone-filled debut album Core, but struggled to gain any love from the Cobain acolytes who insisted they weren't truly grunge (they were from San Diego after all). After a stint of touring and loads of in-fighting, the band returned to the studio to record their second record. Less than one month later, the band emerged with a sound that was uniquely theirs, incorporating elements of psychedelic, country, and blues-rock with the grunge flavor from Core. Purple debuted in June of 1994 at number one on the charts, and went on to sell 3 million copies after just four months. Ep 113Sidetrack: Lazer Guided Melodies - Spiritualized's 4-Suite Space Rock Masterpiece
EOn this week's Sidetrack we're listening to one of Billy Corgan's favorite bands, Spiritualized, with a couple non-singles from their '92 debut Lazer Guided Melodies. Another example of just how varied the landscape of nineties rock was shaping up to be, LGM is at times quite minimalist and cinematic, and other times much more progressive and heavy, with a solid shoegaze backbone. The album's twelve songs are segued together into four color-coded, cross-faded suites, each one providing their own unique 15-minute dream-pop experience. Ep 112Psychedelic, Shimmering, Heavy: Smashing Pumpkin's Gish
EJust a few months before grunge took over the 90s, Smashing Pumpkins were carving out their own space in rock music with an album that perfectly bridged the alt-rock and post-punk sounds of the 80s with the heavy shift that was just around the corner. On this episode we talk Pumpkins' debut album Gish, and discuss the album's perfect blend of psychedelic, shoegaze, and hard rock fuzz, with Billy Corgan's sweet and sour vocal delivery tying it all together. Meticulously crafted in the studio by an obsessive Corgan and masterfully produced by Butch Vig just months before Nevermind, this album is a perfect example of rock's transition into the 90s, and a taste of where Corgan would take the band's unique sound throughout the decade. Ep 111Thomas Bangalter - Irreversible Soundtrack
EWhat do the boys of Daft Punk do when they're not dawning helmets and winning Grammys? For Thomas Bangalter, he likes to create unsettling movie scores and dark dance beats for psychological horror dramas. At least that's what he was doing in 2002 when he scored Gaspar Noé's controversial film Irréversible. We listen to a couple of the more synth-heavy tracks from the film as we wrap up our batch of episodes devoted to electronic music. Ep 110Daft Punk: Homework
EArguably the greatest electronic act of all time, we talk about the origins of the men underneath the helmets - before they wore the helmets! The electronic french duo Daft Punk put out their debut record, Homework, in 1997 after a couple of successful singles, including Da Funk, started a bidding war between record labels to sign the young DJs. The album has gone on to achieve iconic status for how the duo expertly tied the past to the future by revitalizing house music and paving the way for the surge in popularity that EDM would soon see in the coming decades. The perfect blend of IDM, chillwave, and downtempo, Scott Hansen creates a lush and sun-dappled soundscape on this record that perfectly matches the imagery he creates under his graphic design moniker ISO50. Also featured on this episode is our very first discussion of the hypnagogic pop, and how Tycho, better than most artists who attempt it, explores cultural memory and nostalgia through is work. ENext up on our batch of episodes devoted to the wide world of electronic music, we take a left turn and listen to a couple of tracks from the ambient-electronic trio KILN. By manipulating live instrumentation (treated guitars, sampled drums) with field recordings and other found sounds, KILN create lush and immersive soundscapes that borderline on hallucinogenic, and masterfully walk the line between organic, acoustic and electronic music. Grab a nice set of headphones for this episode! After months in the studio, his debut album Gold + Green proved the buzz was warranted. On this sidetrack episode, we listen to the dubby "Into the Cosmos" and the downtempo-synthesized "Odyssey". Ep 106Riding the Synthwave with Com Truise
ENearly a decade ago, the synthwave genre saw a new wave popularity after the release of the action-drama Drive, with Kavinsky's "Nightcall" being prominently featured in the film. But Seth Haley (who goes by the Com Truise) had been making analog electronic music for years prior to that, and released his debut EP Cyanide Sisters just one year before. Com Truise's brand of synthwave expertly blends IDM and chillwave elements with the nostalgia of 80's synth film-scores. Ep 105Sidetrack: Frampton Comes Alive!
EHot on the heels of our McCartney Unplugged episode, we're listening to one of the most beloved and best selling live records of all time, "Frampton Comes Alive!". Recorded in 1975 and released the following year, this album took Peter Frampton from opening act to household name, and made him synonymous with the Talk Box vocal effect after singles "Do You Feel Like We Do" and "Show Me The Way" flirted with the top of the charts. Ep 104Paul McCartney Unplugged in '91:
EFresh off his 106-show Paul McCartney World Tour that featured dozens of staple Beatles and Wings songs, it's no wonder McCartney saw MTV's Unplugged as the perfect opportunity to take his live show format and do the exact opposite. Relatively unheard of up to that point, McCartney's performance and subsequent album release gave Unplugged jumpstarted the show's popularity and helped it gain the cult status that it went onto receive. ETo wrap up our batch of recap episodes, we look back at the last decade to bring you our Top 10 from the 2010s. From Courtney Barnett to Kendrick Lamar, we hope you'll like what we came up with. And in case you need even more of our picks, we've put together a playlist of our 100 favorite non-singles from the last decade. Check out both playlists on Spotify. EWe begin our batch of year-end recaps with our top 10 discoveries of 2019. Ep 100Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow
EHot on the trails of our deep dive into Larry Carlton's Steely Dan guitar solos, we thought we'd pay some homage to another guitar god from the same era: the one and only Jeff Beck. On this episode, we take a listen to his 1975 debut solo record Blow By Blow. Having tried a few times to put together a successful rock group after his departure from The Yardbirds, Beck gravitated more toward the jazz-rock fusion from his sessions with the band Upp, whom he produced and played on their first record. Out of those sessions came the groundwork for Blow By Blow, an incredible showcase of Beck's prowess behind the fretboard. Produced by George Martin (the fifth Beatle himself), and with help from Stevie Wonder (who lended 2 of his tracks to the record and even plays clavinet on one of them), join us as we Blow By Blow geek out over how truly amazing this record is and how it helped put Beck on the path to becoming one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Ep 100100th Episode - Steely Dan's Hired Gun: The Guitar Solos of Larry Carlton
EFor this very special episode of No Filler, we welcome our father Stan to the pod to help us commemorate our 100th episode. He ignited our passion for music at a young age, introducing us to bands like Steely Dan early and often. And he was once the Music Director and morning drive DJ at a small town Texas radio station back in the 70s. Together we take a look at Larry Carlton's many contributions to the sound of Steely Dan, with a listen back at some of his greatest guitar solos in their catalog. This includes "Kid Charlemagne", "Don't Take Me Alive", "I Got The News", and "Third World Man." Ep 98Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic
EThis week we're digging up an old episode that we recorded over 2 years ago that we never ended up posting. We tackle our favorite Steely Dan album Pretzel Logic, from 1974. This was the band's final release as a proper five-piece before Walter Becker and Donald Fagen posted up shop in the studio, recording all future albums with a constantly revolving cast of studio musicians. Pretzel Logic varies widely in style from track to track, and showcases what each of the five members brought to the table, and what made Steely Dan such a powerhouse in their genre-bending jazz rock stylings. To this day, the song "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" from Pretzel is the band's most successful single, over 40 years later. Ep 97Bamnan and Slivercork: Midlake's Perfect Blend of Psychedelic and Folk
EOn this episode we listen to Texas natives Midlake, and their 2004 debut album Bamnan and Slivercork. One of the more successful bands to emerge from the Denton music scene, Midlake's meticulous blending of acoustic guitars and lo-fi electronica create the perfect blend of psychedelic and folk. Vocalist and lead songwriter Tim Smith's whimsical lyricism and Thom Yorke-like falsetto truly sets this album apart from other indie groups of the early aughts, and reminded music lovers everywhere that Austin is not the only city in Texas worth paying attention to. Tracklist Midlake - They Cannot Let It Expand Midlake - Rollerskate (Farewell June) Midlake - I Guess I'll Take Care Midlake - Some Of Them Were Superstitious Mux Mool - Boner Of A Lonely Heart Skinshape - Oracolo Jimmie Spheris - Long Way Down Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 96The Shins - Oh, Inverted World
EThis week we tackle The Shins' seminal indie record Oh, Inverted World. James Mercer and company blended 60s pop influences such as The Beatles & The Zombies effortlessly with Mercer's whimsical lyricism and infectious melodies to create a sound that is unmistakably The Shins. Clocking in at just 33 minutes, the record packs a powerful punch as a debut record, cementing the group as one of the most iconic indie bands of the decade. And having prominent placement in Zach Braff's Garden State certainly helped. Check out all the podcasts over on Pantheon. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 95Sidetrack - Neva Dinova's Songs Written For No One
EOn this week's Sidetrack we're checking out Jake Bellows and his band Neva Dinova, a group that basically wrote songs for no one in particular, until Conor Oberst (of Bright Eyes fame) shined a light on them back in 2004, showcasing them on "One Jug Of Wine, Two Vessels". We focus on one song from their 2005 release, "The Hate Yourself Change", and talk a little bit about Jake Bellows' reflection on his lyrics during the Neva Dinova era, and how as a solo artist he is now actively working towards writing and sharing more positive and optimistic tunes with the world. Ep 94Coldplay - Parachutes
EFresh out of the Metal Month oven, we hop onto the cooling rack and chill out with a little Coldplay and their 2000 debut Parachutes. We admire the atmosphere and tone with some tracks that aren't named after a primary color with a look at the dark mood of Spies, the dreamy Sparks, and the hard to ignore Radiohead vibes of High Speed. Perfectly paired with the piano and acoustic melodies of Chris Martin, it's the guitar riffs and segues of Jonny Buckland that make these filler tracks so memorable. Take a listen with us as we explore one of the most successful bands of all time at the moment that started it all. Ep 93Sidetrack: Prong - Beg To Differ
EOn our last sidetrack episode in Metal Month, we take a look at groove-thrashers Prong and their 1990 record Beg to Differ. The band blended their hardcore punk upbringings with a slightly slowed down thrash sound to help start the groove metal movement of the early 90s along with bands like Pantera and Sepultura. Also the question on everyone’s mind is answered: did Quentin learn anything in Metal Month? Tune in to find out. This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts. Learn more about your ad choices.
