Ep 192The Planet-Powering Energy of Talking Head's Remain In Light

E

Describing Talking Heads groundbreaking 1980 record Remain In Light after hearing it for the first time can be challenging. Or after hearing it for the 2nd, 5th, or 20th time for that matter. The group almost called it quits after the success of Fear Of Music, but quickly found themselves experimenting with African polyrhythms, funk, and electronics in the idyllic Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas. They began utilizing jam sessions as the jumping off point for songs as opposed to David Byrne's lyrics, and took a more collaborative effort to the songwriting process. The result is the astounding, other-worldly, genre-defying record that solidified the Talking Heads as one of the most remarkable rock bands of the 20th century. Join us as we try to find more ways to describe this incredible record, when we aren't speechless that is. Ep 191No Filler Rewind: Television - Marquee Moon

E

We're kick-starting our dive into post-punk & new wave with a look back at our episode on Television's debut record Marquee Moon from 1977. Alongside Blondie, The Ramones, and other bands that shared the stage at the birthplace of punk in New York City, CBGB, Television was lumped into the punk rock category, and for good reason. But their jazz-improv guitar stylings and sporadic vocals was a pivotal moment in post-punk that would change the game forever. Ep 188When Techno Meets Downtempo: Underworld's A Hundred Days Off

E

After a decade of success in the vibrant British electronica and techno scene, Underworld reinvented themselves in 2002 when Rick Smith and Karl Hyde released the dark and beautiful A Hundred Days Off. The record remained true to the duo's dance floor roots with a house and techno backbone, but introduced ambient and downtempo elements to the mix. Add Hyde's dreamy and drone-like vocal delivery, the result is a truly exceptional record that's as energetic as it is hypnotic. Ep 187Hypnotic, Elegant, Sublime: Thievery Corporation's Downtempo Masterpiece The Mirror Conspiracy

E

If the name Thievery Corporation sounds familiar, you might remember "Lebanese Blonde", the track featured on the 2004 indie film Garden State. On this episode, we dive into the album that came before Zach Braff introduced the D.C. duo to hipsters everywhere: The Mirror Conspiracy. The album effortlessly blends elements of reggae, dub, bossa-nova, middle-eastern psychedelia, and even some Spanish guitar for good measure, with a level of precision and mastery that make for a truly hypnotic and sublime listening experience. Ep 186Quantic: The 5th Exotic - Jazzy, Soulful, Funk-Infused Trip-Hop

E

On this episode we explore the album that solidified Quentin's love for downtempo music: Quantic's The 5th Exotic. From start to finish, Will Holland (aka Quantic) skillfully fuses elements of jazz, soul, funk, dub, and hip-hop all into one seamless trip-hop journey. And the record came out just as the producer turned 21, signaling the start of a very prolific career for one of the busiest artists in the industry. We also explore two of his side projects, The Quantic Soul Orchestra and Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro, where he ditches the computer and sequencer for a live band, making music that sounds just like the records he himself samples. E

Something was in the water in Norway in the early 2000s. Two of our favorite duos dropped their first records: Kings of Convenience and Röyksopp. We chat about the latter's debut record, Melody A.M., it's impact on pop culture, and how it's blend of ambient, dreamy downtempo with a dance-floor drive made it a truly stand out record in the downtempo landscape at that time. Ep 183Bloc Party: Silent Alarm

E

By the time 2005 rolled around, the garage rock heavy hitters had already made their mark. The Strokes and Interpol were both working on their 3rd records at this point, and bands that started with "The" were a dime a dozen. Bloc Party put their own stamp on the genre with elements of dance and Brit-rock infused into their sound, and a passion and energy in their delivery that made their debut record Silent Alarm stand out among the crowd. Ep 182Blink And You'll Miss It: Our 182nd Episode!

E

In the early 2000s Mark, Tom and Travis were the kings of pop punk. And we knew them all too well: three goofballs who ran naked through the streets of California and sang about masturbation and diarrhea. But the boys of Blink-182 were ready to break out of that box and finally be taken seriously. So when they went into the studio to record what would become the untitled 5th record they only had one rule: there were no rules. And the result was their most ambitious and personal album yet, with songs that pushed the trio into new styles, experimental effects and recording techniques, and even a guest appearance by the one and only Robert Smith. With the untitled record, Blink proved they were destined for more than the mold we had put them in. Ep 180Whatcha Heard? The Where Has Catherine Wheel Been All Our Lives Edition

E

If there is one takeaway from this month's Whatcha Heard, it is that Catherine Wheel is an amazingly under-appreciated shoegaze alt-rock band from the 90s and you should listen to them immediately. And we learned that in the wide world of vaporwave, of course there's a subgenre called "mallsoft", and it's actually pretty amazing. From doomgaze stone metal group Torche's triumphant 2019 return with Admission to the latest single from quintessential indie singer-songwriter Jim Guthrie, tune in for perhaps our finest mixes yet. Ep 179The Hives: Harder, Faster, Louder

E

We chat about the one-and-only Hives and what made them such a force to be reckoned with in the garage rock landscape. With their origins as more of a straightforward punk group and their love for new wave acts like DEVO, they took the garage rock sound and merged it with those 2 elements to create something that was truly unmatched and became one of the greatest live acts of all time. Buckle up: this one's gonna come at you hard, fast, and loud! Ep 178The Walkmen: Indie's Timeless, Elevated Garage Rockers

From album one, The Walkmen carved out a unique space in the garage rock landscape. They did so by following a few unspoken rules. One of those was to insist on using only vintage equipment, including a decades old piano and hollow-body guitars. Add Hamilton Leithauser's vocal stylings that ranged from intense to intimate, and the result is a catalog of music that elevated The Walkmen above their peers. From the relentless rage of The Rat to the timeless ballads of their last record Heaven, we pay respects to one of the greatest indie groups from the 2000s. Tracklist: The Walkmen - We've Been Had The Recoys - Song of the Paper Dolls Jonathan Fire Eater - The Search For Cherry Red The Walkmen - Wake Up The Walkmen - My Old Man The Walkmen - The Rat (live on Letterman, 2004) The Walkmen - Woe Is Me The Walkmen - Blue As Your Blood The Walkmen - Song For Leigh This Microwave World - The Party Line This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network. Ep 177French Kicks "Swimming" - How A Garage Rock Band Went Out On Their Own Terms

E

If you were a garage rock, post-punk band from the 2000s, chances are your music was going to be compared to The Strokes, or Interpol, or fill-in-the-blank heavy-hitter from that era. For the French Kicks (a band from you guessed it: New York), they couldn't shed the comparisons, and their moderately popular releases never caught on like their fellow New Yorkers did. So on their self-produced fourth album (and unfortunately their last), Swimming, they decided to stop trying. And the resulting record ended up being on of their most endearing, with stripped-down intimate songs chock full of poppy hooks and catchy choruses. Ep 175No Filler Rewind: Psychedelic, Shimmering, Heavy - Smashing Pumpkin's Gish

E

No Filler Rewind: Just a few months before grunge took over the 90s, Smashing Pumpkins were carving out their own space in rock music with an album that perfectly bridged the alt-rock and post-punk sounds of the 80s with the heavy shift that was just around the corner. On this episode we talk Pumpkins' debut album Gish, and discuss the album's perfect blend of psychedelic, shoegaze, and hard rock fuzz, with Billy Corgan's sweet and sour vocal delivery tying it all together. Meticulously crafted in the studio by an obsessive Corgan and masterfully produced by Butch Vig just months before Nevermind, this album is a perfect example of rock's transition into the 90s, and a taste of where Corgan would take the band's unique sound throughout the decade. Ep 174Built To Spill's Keep It Like A Secret: The Definitive Indie Rock Album

E

Built To Spill had already released 3 records and signed to Warner Bros before putting out their definitive record Keep It Like A Secret in 1999. From their 2nd album There's Nothing Wrong With Love to their 3rd record Perfect From Now On, the band transitioned from quick-witted indie pop to more progressive experimental indie rock. Keep It Like A Secret combined the two, resulting in the quintessential indie rock album just in time for the new millenium: soft vocals, introspective lyrics combined with melodic guitar riffs and complex song structures, all wrapped in catchy hooks and pop-centric melodies. Ep 173Beyond Zombie: The Overlooked Gems From The Cranberries First Three Records

E

You've heard "Dreams" and "Linger". You've probably heard "Zombie" close to a gazillion times by now. But as we like to say around here, it's often the tracks between the singles that need another listen (or for some - a first listen). We dive into The Cranberries' first three records and marvel over how unmatched Dolores O'Riordan's powerful and unique vocals were in the 90s rock landscape, and how refusing to shed their Irish origins made her voice that much more powerful by giving western audiences a perspective we may never have heard. From sitcom reboots to the return of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, if you grew up in the 90s you can't take a step these days without falling into a rabbit hole of never-ending nostalgia. For us, the beloved slapstick buddy comedy Dumb & Dumber is a film we watched over and over again throughout our youth, and it's no exaggeration to say the 90's alt-rock soundtrack helped shape our musical journey from a young age. Ep 170Distinctly Grunge, Distinctly Texan: Toadies - Rubberneck

E

When frontman Todd Lewis ventured from Texas to California to record Rubberneck, he fully expected to be back working at the record store in Fort Worth with his fellow bandmates in a year or so. And he was almost right, until "Possum Kingdom" received some airplay on LA's KROQ radio and the album skyrocketed the band into the grunge limelight and cemented this record as a classic from that era. Influenced by Talking Heads, Sex Pistols, and the Pixies, the Toadies had a uniquely heavy-punk rock sound with a slight bend toward pop sensibilities. Ep 169Lighten Things Up A Little: The Presidents of the United States of America

E

As lead-singer and two-string bass player Chris Ballew once observed of the grunge scene of the early nineties: "I wonder if we could lighten things up a little?" Thus The Presidents of the United States was born, a three-piece rock group from grunge's birthplace with one mission: to make grunge and alt-rock music without the themes of angst, depression, etc. With unforgettable singles like "Lump", "Peaches", and "Dune Buggy", The Presidents injected a little bit of fun and left a lasting impression on the rock landscape of the early nineties. On this month's edition of Whatcha Heard, we start with the latest single from our favorite disco, electronic, dream pop group Mr. Twin Sister. We keep the flow going with a couple more shoegazey, psychedelic indie rockers but then the inevitable happens when Travis throws in some metal to mix things up a bit. Ep 167Dreaming in Slow Motion: The Ethereal Sludge of Doomgaze

E

Ambient drone metal, dream sludge, bliss metal: it goes by many names, but one has finally stuck. The term is "doomgaze", and it's exactly what it sounds like: the reverb-drenched guitars and soft dreamy vocals of shoegaze played at the heavy, sludge-like pace of doom metal. That sound goes back much further than you might think, but didn't catch on until the mid 2010s with a steady rise in popularity ever since. Join us as we explore the dichotomy of doomgaze with a look back at it's history and gaze into its promising future. Ep 166The Obscure Shoegaze Episode

E

A couple weeks ago we pondered the question: what happens when you combine doom metal with shoegaze? Doomgaze is an actual thing, with a history dating back to the 90s and a rise in the mid 2010s. But we'll get into all that next week: on this episode we bask in the shimmering, deafening, lush haze of our favorite subgenre: shoegaze. Ep 165Sleep's Holy Mountain: Bridging Metal's Past & Future

E

Legend has it that Tony Iommi himself once claimed that Sleep's Holy Mountain was the album that best encompassed the feel and spirit of Black Sabbath's Volume 4. Whether he said it or not is up for debate, but one thing is for certain: Sleep's embrace of the blues-leaning metal style of Sabbath's early sound oozes out of the sludgy, doom-paced stoner metal that Sleep helped define in this seminal record. So join the magic caravan or ride the crimson dragon as we kick back and slow head bang our way through a record that paved the way for the rise of stoner and doom metal in the 21st century. Ep 164Funky Soulful Spaceship: The Progressive R&B Supergroup Known as The Internet

E

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. That saying certainly applies to the alternative R&B group The Internet. When the members of this group get together to create music, something truly unique happens. Their blend of R&B, hip hop, jazz, funk, and electronic dance music creates a leisurely, smooth, and undeniably cool sound that is unmistakably The Internet. Also unique about this supergroup is how each and every member puts out their own music that sounds like a slice from the same pie, often collaborating with one another to create an impressive catalog of tunes from just five unbelievably talented musicians: Syd, Matt Martians, Steve Lacy, Patrick Page II, and Christopher Smith. Tracklist: The Internet - Roll (Burbank Funk) The Internet - Red Balloon The Internet - Gabby (feat. Jaenelle Monáe) Syd - Nothin' From Somethin' The Jet Age of Tomorrow (Long Way Home (feat. Ep 163Amon Tobin: Chaos Theory

E

When Ubisoft Montreal went searching for a composer to score Chaos Theory, the third installment of the Splinter Cell video game franchise, they went to the best of the best in Hollywood. This included legendary film composer Lalo Schiffrin, who was behind such scores as Dirty Harry, Bullitt, and Cool Hand Luke. When those plans fell through, Ubisoft turned to then underground producer Amon Tobin, who's jazz-infused drum and bass sound was the perfect compliment to the noir-soaked espionage stealth action of the Splinter Cell franchise. The result is the now iconic, groundbreaking soundtrack that changed gamer's perception of what a game score could sound like, and further cemented Tobin as a legendary underground producer. Before you can truly appreciate Freetown Sound and the message it delivers, you need a little bit of context around the state of the country in the summers leading up to its release. But more importantly, how a very specific incident in Dev Hynes career was the tipping point for an artist at his wit's end confronting the realities of being a black man in America. We break it all down in our look at one of 2016's best records, Blood Orange's Freetown Sound. Tracklist: Blood Orange - Do You See My Skin Through The Flames? Ep 160Jesse Johnson & The Minneapolis Sound

E

As part of his contract with Warner Bros., Prince was able to recruit and produce his own artists. One of those bands was The Time, formed in 1981 fronted by Morris Day with Jesse Johnson on lead guitar. Based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, The Time's blend of funk rock with elements of synth-pop and new wave was the origin of what came to be known as the Minneapolis sound. A collection of songs written by Prince that allowed him to experiment and be a bit edgier than the music he wrote under his own name, The Time's debut is an absolute blast of a gem from that era, with Jesse Johnson shredding on the guitar in moments that rival the best of 80s glam metal. We play a couple of tracks off his solo record Jesse Johnson's Revue, where he carried the torch of The Time and continued to cultivate that unmistakable Minneapolis sound. Tracklist: Jesse Johnson - Be Your Man The Time - 777-9311 The Time - Cool The Time - Jungle Love Jesse Johnson - Just Too Much Jesse Johnson - Special Love This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network. Ep 156Arms & Sleepers - Black Paris 86

E

When the duo behind Arms and Sleepers sits down to make music together, they typically turn to movies for inspiration. That was the goal for their 2006 debut record Black Paris 86 after all: to make a soundtrack for an imaginary film. The music is both dark and mysterious, but also warm and beautiful. Blending exceptional drumbeats and killer bass lines with glockenspiels and toy pianos, Arms and Sleepers create a truly unique sound. Join us as we chat about this hidden gem in the ambient downtempo genre. Ep 155No Filler Rewind: Amon Tobin - Bricolage

E

On this week's episode, we dig deep into the No Filler archives and revisit our episode on Brazilian electronic musician Amon Tobin's debut record Bricolage. Unlike most trip hop albums from the nineties, Tobin perfectly blends old jazz samples with a drum and bass backbone, and an IDM sensibility. Dark, moody, and effortlessly cool, this record stands out as a true gem in the field of trip hop. Ep 150No Filler's Best of 2020: Part 1

When it comes to years, 2020 has been a doozy (to put it mildly). And for music lovers like us, the absence of live music has perhaps been the toughest loss from what we know as "normal" to navigate. But music has still been there for us, like the reliable companion it always has been. There has been some amazing music to come out this year, and we're starting off our list of Top 20 of 2020 with picks 1-5. Today we cover a couple tracks from Longwave's The Strangest Things and French Kicks Swimming. Ep 148The Stills: Logic Will Break Your Heart

E

We've said it before, and we'll probably say it again: the early 00's marked the beginning of our journey as music lovers. And this is right about the time garage rock and the post-punk revival started to really take off. The Stills is just another of the countless "The" bands that hit the scene around that time, but there's just something about their debut record Logic Will Break Your Heart that stands out amongst the rest. It's dark and clever lyrics pair perfectly with the always clean, angular guitar work reminiscent of Interpol and Joy Division with catchy riffs and hooks aplenty. Hot off our White Stripes episode, we went digging through Third Man Record's roster to see what gems we could uncover. The album cover for The Pathetx's 1981 called out to us, begging for a spin. A collection of unreleased material from this classic 80's punk outfit from Detroit, 1981 is eighteen minutes of raw energy that only 80s punk can truly deliver. Ep 146The White Stripes - Elephant

E

Jack White's appearance on Saturday Night Live a few weeks back reminded those who forgot what a powerful and raw performer he is (and made those who've been cooped up all year long for live performances again). And for a lot of us, our introduction to White's unmatched blend of hard blues and garage rock all started with 2003's Elephant. We take a listen to a couple non-singles off the record, and play a clip of his SNL performance of his "Ball And Biscuit" medley. Tracklist: The White Stripes - Hypnotize The White Stripes - Black Math Jack White - Ball And Biscuit/Don't Hurt Yourself/Jesus Is Coming Soon (live on SNL) The White Stripes - Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine Fake Eyes - Illuminate The Wake - Melancholy Man The Gories - Stranded This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network. Ep 145Slashers and Synthwaves: The Music of John Carpenter (BONUS HALLOWEEN EPISODE)

E

John Carpenter is often referred to as the master of horror. His iconic Halloween franchise defined the slasher film formula for decades to come. But for fans of synthwave music (and the use of synth in cinema), we have Carpenter to thank for that as well. His extremely effective use of synths to build atmosphere and heighten tension in his films went on to influence countless synthwave artists and film composers. On this Halloween bonus episode of No Filler, we listen to a couple tracks from his 1982 score for Halloween III, and talk about his legacy in both film and music. Tracklist: "The Fog Theme" "Chariots of Pumpkins" (Halloween III) "Local Boy, No Way" (Halloween III) "The Upside Down" (Stranger Things) "Halloween Theme" This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network. Ep 144Sidetrack: Poor Moon - "Heaven's Door"

Not every side project becomes an Audioslave or a Them Crooked Vultures. But if you're a fan of the band they stemmed from, odds are pretty good you'll find something to like. For fans of Fleet Foxes, we have the short-lived Poor Moon. Comprised of bass player Christian Wargo and keyboardist Casey Wescott, Poor Moon brings the intricate melodies and delicate harmonies that Wargo and Wescott bring to Fleet Foxes with a hint of their own psychedelic flair.
