Ep 241And So On And So Forth: The Many Adjectives of HEALTH (with guest Nathan Forster)
EIndustrial synth-pop? Noise gaze? What exactly is electronic body music? All of these words have been used to describe the musical stylings of HEALTH, a band that refuses to stop screaming at you in every song title. Travis is joined by long-time friend of the pod Nathan Forster to dive into a handful of HEALTH tunes to get to the bottom of the band's unique blend of noise rock and synth-pop. Ep 240Rewind - Dreaming In Slow Motion: The Ethereal Sludge of Doomgaze
EAmbient drone metal, dream sludge, bliss metal: it goes by many names, but one has finally stuck. The term is "doomgaze", and it's exactly what it sounds like: the reverb-drenched guitars and soft dreamy vocals of shoegaze played at the heavy, sludge-like pace of doom metal. That sound goes back much further than you might think, but didn't catch on until the mid 2010s with a steady rise in popularity ever since. Join us as we explore the dichotomy of doomgaze with a look back at it's history and gaze into its promising future. Ep 239Massively Loud, Hauntingly Quiet: The Music of Spotlights
EIf you're a fan of shoegaze, you know that wall-of-sound when you hear it. Brooklyn-based Spotlights takes that wall-of-sound and cranks up the distortion, infusing the hazy, quiet vocals of dreampop with the heavy sludge of doom metal. Some would call them a doomgaze band, but they prefer the term dreamsludge. We chat about tracks spanning from their first EP to their 2nd full-length, Love & Decay. Ep 238Mysterious, Uncontrolled, Free: The Music of Pencey Sloe
EDoomgaze is exactly what it sounds like: a blend of the slow and sludgy pace of doom metal with the wall-of-sound and ethereal vocals we've come to associate with shoegaze. Pencey Sloe is a French band that appear to have unintentionally stumbled into this label, or as lead singer Diane Pellotieri often puts it, their style is "completely uncontrolled, free, and blind." While the "doom" part of the label certainly applies during the heavier and sludgier moments of their music, what stands out most about Pencey Sloe is the melancholic, darkly luminous beauty of the vocals and lyrical themes. We chat about their debut LP Don't Believe, Watch Out and look ahead to the upcoming record Neglect that drops this fall. Ep 236Prepare For Blast Off: The Interstellar Thunder Pop of Pinkshinyultrablast
EAs a shoegaze band from Saint Petersburg, Russia, Pinkshinyultrablast describe that isolation from the global music scene as a feature not a bug. That freedom from the judgements and structures of the global scene led them to create a whole new subgenre under the shoegaze umbrella called "thunder pop". Join us as we chat about their debut record Everything Else Matters and their perfectly calibrated fusion of pop-forward melodies with an explosive wall-of-sound. Ep 235Punched Up Shoegaze: Narrow Head's Grunge Revivalism
EOver the past decade, there's been a definitive shift happening in the indie-rock scene that leans very heavily toward that iconic 90s rock sound that we all know and love. Whether it be grunge, shoegaze, or any flavor on the wide spectrum of the alt-rock sound, modern bands are taking all of those waypoints in rock and breathing new life into them. And we argue on this episode that no band does it better (or comes anywhere close) than Houston-based alt-rock group Narrow Head. We listen to a few tracks from their 2016 record Satisfaction and talk about the nostalgia that oozes from every track. Ep 234Noisy, free-flowing, and truly liberated: The music of Band Of Susans
EEmerging from New York's noise rock scene, Band Of Susans broke away from the rock clichés that were all but set in stone by the late eighties, liberating the genre alongside their grungy shoegaze counterparts. On this week's episode, we dive into a handful of non-singles from "The Word And The Flesh" and "Veil". Ep 233Whatcha Heard? The Yard Work Edition
EOn this month's Whatcha Heard, we kick off our monthly mixtape with a brand new single from Texas native alt-rockers, Narrow Head. From there we listen to everything from lo-fi indie pop to 90s shoegaze (no surprises there), psychedelic dream pop to 70s post punk and much more. Ep 232Sloan: The Fab Four of 90's Alt Rock
EThroughout the mid-nineties as proto-grunge, radio-friendly Nirvana knockoffs were signing record deals like they were going out of style, Sloan took the road less traveled after signing with Geffen Records, even in the face of mounting pressure from the label to stay on that grungy, noise rock course. A second full-length album found the group heading in a more refined pop sound, a world away from the washed-out fuzz of their previous releases. Despite having been swept under the rug by Geffen, Sloan refused to bow down to the major label's demands, and have continued to remain steadfast and true to their unique brand of indie pop even after all these years. Ep 231Controlled Chaos: The Intoxicating Shoegaze of Swirlies
EConsidered by many to be one of America's best entries into the shoegaze genre during its 90s heyday, we talk about Swirlies' 1996 record They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days in the Glittering World of the Salons. The band spent a long time in the studio with this record, going on to refer to it as their "longest labor of love". The result is a collection of wide-ranging styles that blend lo-fi, noise pop, grunge, and even electronica with their shoegaze sound. And with lead singer Damon Tutunjian's affinity for creating mixtapes from his youth, the band also incorporates tape loops, white noise, and sampled music into the mix, creating seamless transitions from track to track. Swirlies keep you guessing and constantly subvert expectations throughout the record. Join us as we gush over this incredible record. This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network. Ep 230Guitar-Driven Sonic World: The Music of Swervedriver
EFor our very first listener-suggested episode, we talk about the amazing Swervedriver and focus on their first 2 records: Raise and Mezcal Head. Similar to bands like Hum and Catherine Wheel, Swervedriver mixes elements of grunge, alt-rock, and shoegaze to create their sound. EWe're back from our 2 week hiatus with May's Whatcha Heard, our monthly mixtape featuring 10 tracks that we can't get enough of. This month features everything from psychedelic folk to dystopian synthwave, the genre-defying Bjork to 90s post-hardcore, and plenty more to keep you interested. Tracklist: Toro y Moi - Days In Love Bjork - I Miss You Kikagaku Moyo - Cardboard Pile Yura Yura Teikoku - Otoko Wa Fuantei Quicksand - Supergenius New Order - Chosen Time Umberto - Hamster City Motherfucker Lightning Bug - The Return Sebadoh - Dreams sundiver ca - Live in Las Vegas bdrmm - Gush Candy Afterlife - Beechild This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network. Ep 228An Uneven Wilderness: Unwound's Repetition
EWe're back from vacation with a short and sweet episode on the post-hardcore noise rock stylings of Unwound, a band that created, as Fred Thomas of AllMusic once said, "some of the more influential and lasting work of their era, with their cloudy moods and explosively tense group dynamics culminating in some truly transcendent albums." On this episode, we're diving into our favorite album from the group, 1996's Repetition. Ep 227Rewind: Jimmy Eat World - Clarity
EAnother rewind episode? What are you guys on vacation or something? Yes. Yes we are. Now considered a touchstone record of the emo genre, we take a look at Jimmy Eat World's 1999 classic Clarity, and how the sound they were perfecting ushered us into the third wave of emo music. Before that we go all the way back to the spring of 1985 in Washington D.C. to explore the origins of emo, and discuss how difficult the genre is to define. Ep 226Rewind: The Obscure Shoegaze Episode
EOn this rewind episode pulled from the No Filler vaults we bask in the shimmering, deafening, lush haze of our favorite subgenre: shoegaze. Ep 225A Little Heavier: How Helmet Bridged Indie Rock and Metal
EWe turn up the gain and aggression just a tad as we take one step closer to metal with tracks from Helmet's Meantime and Betty. Ep 223F*cking Phil: Drop Nineteens' Delaware
EFor those just getting into the shoegaze genre, there are a handful of albums that are must-listens. Of course at the top sits My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless", Slowdive's "Souvlaki", and Ride's "Nowhere". But while there are must-listen albums, perhaps more important are the must-listen songs. And for many, Drop Nineteen's Delaware features one of shoegaze's greatest moments: the ethereal, slow-build simmer of "Kick The Tragedy", a near 9 minute drone with an unexpected sucker punch two-thirds of the way through that left a lasting impression on new and old fans of the genre and cemented the band as one of shoegaze's greatest acts. Ep 221Heavy, Spacey, Mesmerizing: Hum's Downward Is Heavenward
EAfter 90s alt-rockers Hum gained a small amount of fame with their 1995 single "Stars", the band headed back to the studio to make their next record. By the time the Downward Is Heavenward was released in 1998, perhaps rock was ready for something else. The record garnered little attention, and the band dissolved, not putting out another record for another 22 years! But the record lived on, and it's masterful blend of space rock, grunge, post-hardcore, and a touch of emo sensibilities has lead many to consider it one of the best alt rock records of the 90s. Ep 219It's not shoegazing, it's brogue-gazing: Pale Saints' In Ribbons
EAs we continue exploring the not-so-grungy, somewhat shoegazey side of 90s alt-rock, we're diving into Pale Saints' second studio album from 1992, "In Ribbons", a record that "bristles with quirk, strangeness and charm". Ep 218All About The Noise: Catherine Wheel's Chrome

Ep 217Jangly, Murky, Mysterious: How R.E.M's Murmur Ushered In The Alt Rock Wave
EWe chat about R.E.M's debut record, Murmur and try to imagine what it was like to hear this style of rock for the first time in 1983. Hearing it now, R.E.M's mix of jangly 60s pop and folk rock with garage rock attitude sounds so normal and common after the band's influence shaping the sound of countless rockers for nearly four decades. But at the time, critics knew it was special. So much so that Rolling Stone put it at its best album of the year, beating out Michael Jackson's Thriller, Police's Synchronicity, and U2's War, to name a few. The next iteration of rock was here, and R.E.M. was the flagbearer. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 215And We Were So Small: The Music of Polaris
EWith Miracle Legion's future in limbo after legal troubles with their label at the time, Mark Mulcahy came up with a new name for the group (and alter egos for each band member) when they were approached by Will McRobb to write songs and appear in his upcoming Nickelodeon project. The show was of course The Adventures of Pete and Pete. Not only did they appear in the opening credits and write the theme song for the show, Polaris also played a heavy role in an episode all about discovering your favorite song at a young age. We talk about what an amazing television network Nickelodeon was and how fortunate we feel to have grow up in the 90s, and how Polaris and the music of Pete and Pete played such a big role in shaping our taste in music. Ep 214The World Was So Big: The Music of Miracle Legion
If you were in college in the early 80s and tuned in to your campus radio station, you probably heard a fair amount of R.E.M., maybe some Pixies, or The Smiths even. But you may have heard a lesser known group: Miracle Legion. With similar jangle pop melodies and vocal stylings as Peter Buck and Michael Stipe, the band was often compared to their R.E.M. counterparts. But what made Miracle Legion different is perhaps what kept them from reaching superstardom: the lyrical themes of singer Mark Mulcahy were less cryptic and poetic and more nostalgic and direct. They dealt with childhood memories we could all relate to. Which is why it's no surprise that the creator of the Nickelodeon cult classic TV show The Adventures of Pete and Pete approached Mark to write songs for his show about growing up in Suburbia (more on that next week). Join us as we listen to several tracks spanning Miracle Legion's short but impactful career leading up to the early 90s when they transformed into the band we knew and loved as kids: the one and only Polaris. Ep 213Rewind: REM - Life's Rich Pageant
ETravis is out of town this week, so we're dropping a Rewind episode on you from our first year podcasting back in 2018, where we covered REM's 4th studio album "Life's Rich Pageant". If you were to plot R.E.M's path from underground buzz to household name, their fourth studio album Life's Rich Pageant was the turning point. Coming out of a miserable recording experience in London with Fables of the Reconstruction in 1985, the band heads back to the states and are determined to inject some energy and creativity back into their music. The result is the loud, invigorating, and often spontaneous fourth album. Tracklist: What If We Give It Away? Ep 212Niche-less Indie Rock: The Music Of Ambulance LTD
EWe're taking a break from the dream pop resurgence of the 2010s to reminisce over one of Quentin's favorite indie rock records from our high school years: Ambulance LTD's "LP" from 2004. With a frontman in constant struggle to keep his band together, and a bankrupt record label preventing him from releasing new material, Marcus Congleton's Ambulance LTD was rather short-lived. Though they may not have had enough time to evolve their sound and bring it to maturity, a band that once said "their niche is not sticking to any particular niche" somehow managed to release one of the better guitar pop records from 2004; a true gem in the era of cookie cutter indie pop. Ep 210Steeped In Suburbia: Real Estate - Days
EContinuing our streak devoted to dreamy indie pop from the 2010s, we listen to an album steeped in suburbia: Real Estate's Days. Everything from the album art to the lyrical themes harken back to that youthful innocence of growing up in the suburbs. The songs are simple but the song structures are anything but, with jangly guitar melodies and gorgeous harmonies lie somewhere between 60s pop and 90s alternative. So hop on your bicycle and let the phone lines and street lights lead the way as we bask in the warmth of one of indie's greatest nostalgia trips. Ep 209Lo-Fi Daydream - Beach Fossils
EWe learned about a new subgenre while researching this record: "twee pop". The term is used to describe music that is simple and innocent, with boy-girl harmonies, lyrical themes about love, and catchy melodies. It's the perfect way to describe Beach Fossil's debut 2010 record. Written, recorded, and produced by frontman and Beach Fossil's founder Dustin Payseur while longing to escape his new home in New York, the album is the perfect antidote to anyone longing for summer, the innocence of youth, and a desire to escape the day-to-day grind of life. Ep 20821st Century Dream Pop: Beach House - Teen Dream
EAfter signing to Sub Pop, Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand decided it was time to take Beach House's lo-fi signature sound and make everything "bigger". They kept the core ingredients (jangly guitars, organ drones, and Victoria's distinct low, Nico-esque vocals), but added more approachable, hooks and more pop-leaning choruses. You could say they put the "pop" in dream pop more so than any of their predecessors, garnering mainstream success. The band is now synonymous with the genre, and helped to define and shape it for the next generation. Ep 203Rewind: Washed Out And The Chillwave Movement
On this week's rewind episode, we take a look at the emergence of chillwave and the role of those dime-a-dozen music blogs of the early 2000s in helping launch this short-lived & blissed-out, shoe-gaze dance genre. Our main dig is on the DIY home recordings of Ernest Greene Hemingway Jr., aka Washed Out, who, along with Toro Y Moi and Neon Indian, were the three main influencers of the chillwave sound. Ep 202Human In The Machine: Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion
EAfter the success of Person Pitch, Noah Lennox took those lessons learned with him back into the studio with the rest of Animal Collective to create another touchstone record of the 2000s. This time, the melodic electronica that felt more man than machine was refined and amplified to an infectious, hypnotic, and deeply human electronic record. The record improves even more on their trademark harmonies with Noah and Avey Tare sounding better together than ever, and the lyrical themes very much a continuation of Noah's lean toward introspection in Person Pitch. One of the greatest records from the 2010s that could only have spawned from the hive mind of Animal Collective, join us as we fawn and gush over the many reasons we love this record. Ep 201Panda Bear - Person Pitch (with guest Josh Stewart)
EWith our buddy Josh joining us once again, we gush over Panda Bear's 2007 touchstone indie record Person Pitch. Trading in the usual guitar for a Roland sampler, Noah Lennox created a record made up almost entirely of samples ranging from Cat Stevens to a hooting owl. His reverb-drenched vocals, often densely layered to create harmonies on par with Beach Boys, paired perfectly with his introspective lyrical themes focused on his marriage, his newfound fatherhood, and even deeply personal stories like his reliance on anti-depressants. Person Pitch laid the foundation for countless indie bedroom poppers in the decade to come, and a sound that became the stepping stone for the chillwave movement. Ep 199Whatcha Heard? The Could You Repeat That Edition
EOn this month's Whatcha Heard, Travis breaks our lengthy metal dry spell with some Norwegian thrash metal, Quentin gets reacquainted with one half of Air, and Adriano Celentano leaves us scratching our heads with his classic 70s hit full of English gibberish. We also dive into some dark and moody synth-pop from the 70s and 80s, and a sprinkling of post-punk and emo for good measure. Ep 197No Filler Rewind: Spoon - A Series Of Sneaks
EIn this early No Filler episode, we kicked off our deep dive into indie rock gods Spoon. We started with A Series of Sneaks, where Spoon still had their feet firmly planted in the alt rock post punk that came before them (think Pixies and Sonic Youth). We chat about how the label's lackluster support for the record jaded the band and how it ultimately helped set the tone for the album that followed, and the band we now know and love. Ep 196This Is A Lonesome Crowded Antarctica: Modest Mouse's First Three Studio Albums
EWe chat about Modest Mouse before Float On put them on the map. From the very first track on their debut album, Isaac Brock and his bandmates blended any and every genre with their alt rock roots to create a sound all their own. And Brock carried on the loud-quiet-loud dynamic that the Pixies created just a few years prior to weave in sporadic outbursts into each track. By the time we get to Float On, Modest Mouse had laid a solid foundation for indie rock that so many bands would build on in the years to come. Ep 195Loud-Quiet-Loud: How Pixies Ushered In A New Dynamic With Doolittle
EPiggy-backing off our Talking Heads and Sonic Youth episodes, we explore another trailblazer of the alt-rock post-punk variety. When Pixies released Doolittle in 1989, they carried a confidence into the studio that was missing from their first record. With melodic, simple song structures and Black Francis' sporadic, neurotic outbursts sprinkled throughout the record, they created a new dynamic known as "loud-quiet-loud" that helped paved the way for grunge, and countless other indie alt rock bands that followed in their footsteps. Ep 194Whatcha Heard? The Duos and Dreampop Edition
EWith every Whatcha Heard episode there's always a few left turns, and at least a 180 that takes us from, for example, vaporwave to doom metal. On this episode however, we managed to bring 10 tracks that work so perfectly together, you'd think we must have planned it. Maybe it's the changing season, or maybe our twin connection was especially deep these past few weeks. Either way, tune in for a collection of 10 dreamy, laid back, lo-key jams that fall mostly under the dreampop umbrella. No left turns here, just a solid playlist suitable for weekend drive. Ep 193How Sonic Youth Made Rock Real Again: A Conversation With David Browne
Join us as we chat with Rolling Stone Senior Writer David Browne, author of the definitive Sonic Youth biography, Goodbye 20th Century. We talk about how the band's "cool kids" persona carried them from the no-wave movement of the 70s and 80s into the 90s where they finally signed to a major label. We play tracks from Goo, Dirty, and Experimental Jet Set (the Geffen Years), and dissect their evolving sound between the 3 records as the band came as close as they ever would to mainstream success. And although they never quite reached the heights of label mates Nirvana (or any of the countless grunge bands that rode Cobain's coattails), we chat about the band's real legacy: bringing the art and culture of New York into the mainstream, and writing a playbook for so many indie bands to follow in the decades ahead.
