Experience the Warmth - Incubus' Make Yourself

E

We’re diving into Incubus’ 1999 breakout Make Yourself, one of the late 90s’ most thoughtful meditations on self-determination and what it means to be alive. Brandon Boyd’s lyrics grapple with questioning the privileges we take for granted, resisting systems designed to keep us compliant, and staying engaged when everything feels cold and empty. It’s a record that urges us to carve our own path and hold onto our humanity. Join us as we experience the warmth with Incubus. Folk Pop Without The Pop Structure: Fleet Foxes' 2008 Self-Titled

We're rounding out the month of November with a brand new episode digging into Fleet Foxes' self-titled breakout full-length record. Stratospheric Sludge: The Deep Space Cuts of Hum's Defining Record

E

We blast off into the stratosphere with Hum's 1995 masterpiece You'd Prefer An Astronaut, the Champaign, Illinois band's sonic collision of shoegaze shimmer and bone-crushing sludge metal. While MTV latched onto "Stars," the album's real treasures lie in the deep space between those radio moments—massive, swirling guitar walls courtesy of Matt Talbott and Tim Lash that feel like entire galaxies collapsing in slow motion. This is the record that proved heavy music could be beautiful, and shoegaze could absolutely crush. Strap in for lift-off. Kings of Leon - Aha Shake Heartbreak (Part 1)

E

We sit down with our long time friend Mitchell (a name we've dropped countless times on this podcast) to chat about Kings of Leon's second record Aha Shake Heartbreak. An extremely formative band and record for the 3 of us, we reminisce about seeing the band open for The Strokes in 2003, rushing down to the local record shop to grab a copy of Aha Shake in 2005, and dive deep into every track of the record. We discuss the brilliant lyrical balance of raw vulnerability with unbridled testosterone, and the southern tinged garage rock sound that defined the group just before their meteoric mainstream rise in the years to come. Spewing Poetry: The Undeniable Greatness of The Tragically Hip

E

We say it often on this podcast: the 90s is a bottomless pit of incredible rock music as wide as it is deep. And if you grew up in the United States like we did, you may have slept on arguably the greatest Canadian rock band of all time: The Tragically Hip. From the cryptically beautiful lyricism of frontman Gord Downie to the catchy hooks and song structures of the band behind him, we deep dive into their 1994 record Day For Night and ask the question we find ourselves asking constantly on this podcast: where has this band been all our lives? Was Bush Really Grunge? Breaking Down Their Early Sound

E

We finally get around to talking about Bush and dive into their first 2 records: Sixteen Stone and Razorblade Suitcase. Released only 8 months after the death of Kurt Cobain, the music world was split between fans that wanted to move on from grunge, and those that were highly protective of it's legacy and culture. Bush got caught somewhere in the middle, seeing commercial success on one hand and scorn from devoted grunge heads on the other. Kitchens of Distinction: Happy, Tragic Euphoria

E

Greatly underrated and appreciated, Kitchens of Distinction were painted with a broad brush by critics at the time. Critics at the time pigeonholed the group as a "gay band" due to frontman Patrick Fitzgerald being publicly out at the time, and his lyrics that didn't shy from the subject matter. But the band was much more than that, and today we dive into the soaring, shimmering soundscapes and deep, haunting, poetic lyrics. Fuzz and Fury: Wolf People's Ruins

E

If you're a fan of guitar-driven rock music, the days of Hendrix, Page, and Halen are long gone. Nowadays, the guitar is rarely front-and-center - and if is, it's usually in the form of a reverb-drenched wall-of-sound or this week's latest grunge homage (don't get me wrong - I'm all in on the grunge revival!). But if you stumbled upon English psych rockers Wolf People and their 2016 record Ruins, you were treated to a collection of guitar riffs so beefy that I'd say guitarists Jack Sharp and Joe Hollick deserve a seat at the table amongst the greats of yesteryear. Truly a gem from the last decade, join us as we dive deep into the fuzz and fury of Wolf People. Tracklist Wolf People - Glass Wolf People - Ninth Night Wolf People - Rhine Sagas Wolf People - Thistles Wolf People - Not Me Sir Wolf People - Kingfisher This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast Network Learn more about your ad choices. Vivid and Searing: Ringo Deathstarr's Pure Mood

E

Nowadays you can't throw a rock without hitting an indie record that blends sludge of grunge and jangle of alt rock with the fuzz and breathy vocals of shoegaze and dreampop. As niche as that may sound - it is the sound of indie right now. And while Ringo Deathstarr certainly wasn't the first, their 2015 record Pure Mood may well be the first to get it right. Drawing heavy inspiration from 90s grunge and alt metal, the Austin trio's nearly perfect shoegaze record brings new meaning to the wall of sound cliche, and crafts a sound that went on to dominate indie music a decade later.
