Moment #30: Why Do Leaders Believe Their Own Bullsh!t?

Moment #30 // Why are such vast numbers of senior leaders so prone to believing their own bullsh!t?There are a bunch of underlying (but observable) factors, which we’re all subject to, that push us to believe our own bullsh!t. It takes discipline, self-awareness, and insight to overcome them, and to rise above the facade. This moment looks at four of the key psychological drivers, and how they operate on our subconscious mind. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.143: Believing Your Own Bullsh!t.————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve created a brand new 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. S1 Ep 259The Things I Wish I’d Known Earlier: Hindsight and maturity

Episode #259 // I’ve been doing quite a few guest appearances on other people’s podcasts in recent weeks, and I’ve been asked on several occasions, “Marty, what do you know now, that you wish you’d learned earlier?”… There are any number of life lessons that I could absolutely have used earlier on, and lots of stuff that would have made me a better leader way sooner. But, then again, with the benefit of hindsight and wisdom, I’ve come to realize that the depth and value of any lessons comes from the very fact that they are hard fought and won. Once you learn them, by starting at the right place, going through the trial and error, (and, yes, a little of the essential pain), these lessons stay learned, indelibly imprinted on your psyche. In this episode, I look at the life lessons that took me every one of my 61 years to learn, and the leadership lessons that gave me the ability to formulate my No Bullsh!t Leadership framework. Different lessons come to all of us at different times, which is why your ability to step back to see the big picture is key.————————Access Marty's Proven Strategies to Motivate Your Team and Optimize PerformanceJOIN OUR FREE BOOTCAMP **MOTIVATE TO ELEVATE** HERE————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentor Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/yourceomentorYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor ————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. Moment #29: Balancing Banter With Boundaries

Moment #29 // Having close friends is one of life’s ultimate joys. But, as a leader, that’s the last thing you want. Being friends with someone who works for you dilutes your objectivity. And no matter how much you think you can overcome this, the reality is… you can’t!A friend in your team will take advantage of your good nature… and you’ll cut them more slack than you should. It’s not intentional, but it is unavoidable. This kills the meritocracy culture.  When friendliness turns into friendship, the unintended consequences are counterproductive to everything you want to achieve, as a leader. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.197: Why Can't We Be Friends?.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? S1 Ep 258Future Trends in Business: Where are we heading?

Episode #258 // One of the principal occupations of many consultants, speakers, and business experts is to try to predict the future. And, although this is virtually impossible, it doesn’t stop them from trying!  If you’re a regular listener, you’ll know that I try to stay away from predictions for the most part. I’d rather deal with the leadership imperatives that drive performance, and work out how to apply these timeless principles to any given context… This is a subtle but important distinction, and it’s why I feel pretty confident about the guidance I give: how do you apply the proven tools and strategies that I’ve learned in 30+ years of leading at the highest levels. It’s always fun and interesting to look at emerging trends, though, and to extrapolate those to see where they might be taking us. Today, I’m going to indulge in a little bit of that! The World Economic Forum published an article a little while back titled, “Five Key Trends Shaping the New World of Work.” After chewing over these five trends, I thought it’d be worth sharing them with you, and giving some consideration to how likely it is that they’ll dominate our thinking in the medium to long term.Source Material: Economist Article:What Are the Chances of an AI Apocalypse?World Economic Forum ArticleFive Key Trends Shaping the New World of WorkNo Bullsh!t Leadership Episode:Ep.218: Is Working From Home Working?Ep.95: The Joys of OutsourcingEp.221: Managing Supplier RelationshipsDiary of a CEO EpisodeEp.252: Ex-Google Officer Speaks Out On the Dangers of AI————————Join the Leadership Beyond the Theory waitlist here!————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. Moment #28: When Should You Outsource?

Moment #28 // How do you go about making an outsourcing decision for your company? It’s important to be clear on exactly why you want to outsource, and to understand the relative cost of doing something yourself, as opposed to having a specialist external firm do it for you.Knowing when to outsource is as critical as any skill you need in business, and this Moment exposes the key questions you need to ask to nail it.You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.95: The Joys Of Outsourcing.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? S1 Ep 257Your Leadership User Manual: Clarifying expectations for success

Episode #257 // I came across an article by Shanna Hocking, which introduced me to the concept of the Leadership User Manual. Hocking credits its origins to Adam Bryant, who wrote an article almost 10 years ago titled, What if you had to write a user manual about your leadership style? Imagine the power of a physical document that can help your people to understand how they can best work with you. What a great idea! Knowing how your boss operates, and what he values, could save you years of guesswork, as the only other way to work it out is through trial and error. I wish I’d thought of this years ago! In this episode, I take a deep dive into the concept of the leadership user manual. I look at the benefits and risks, and I take you along the journey with me as I develop my own inaugural leadership user manual. We’ve also created a leadership user manual template, a free download, so that you can develop your own guide.Source Material: Books (on Amazon)One Bold Move a Day - Shanna HockingPrinciples - Ray DalioFast Company Article:How to be the boss everyone wants to work for - Shanna HockingLinkedIn ArticlesLeaders Need User Manuals (and what I learned by writing mine) - Abby FalikWhat if you had to write a "User Manual” about your leadership style? - Adam Bryant————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Moment #27: Defining Weak Leadership

Moment #27 // Weak leaders are characterized by what they’re not prepared to do.Weak leaders are unwilling to push back on the boss; they don't put the team's interests ahead of their own; they’re unwilling to set ambitious goals; they’re afraid to challenge, coach, and confront their people; and they’re reluctant to challenge the status quo. What's the price of leadership weakness? Unrealized potential; poor performance; lack of market competitiveness.Eventually, this leads to job cuts, restructures, and redundancies. And in some cases, the company won’t survive. Weak leaders allow performance to slip, and the outcomes are entirely predictable. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.68: The Price Of Leadership Weakness.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? S1 Ep 256Barriers to Building Emotional Intelligence with Dr Rebecca Heiss

Episode #256 // The concept of EQ isn’t new. It was the subject of academic research way back in the 1960s, but it took another 30 years before we gained widespread awareness of it through Daniel Goleman’s classic book, Emotional Intelligence. These days, we have fairly robust tests to measure a person's EQ, and I would never hire a senior executive without having them take those tests… it’s not the be-all-and-end-all, but it does provide another data point to calibrate the observations you make in other parts of the recruitment and selection process. What are the barriers to building your own EQ? To deal with this question, I’ve enlisted the aid of Dr Rebecca Heiss, who’s an expert in all things human behavior and leadership. Her book, Instinct, is all about how to rewire our brains to remove some of the barriers to success. This fascinating discussion may help you to break through some of the barriers that are holding you back.————————This week, I'm doing something that I've never done before. Moment #26: From Individual Contributor to Leader

Moment #26 // Of the many mistakes that new leaders are prone to make, over-functioning for certain individuals is one of the most common, and the most insidious. When you do this, it tells your people that what they're doing isn't good enough. It trains them to be lazy and complacent, because you'll always step in to finish their job for them if you’re not happy. And they'll keep getting paid for not doing their job to the standard you expect. Excellent leaders give their people clarity of purpose, resources, coaching, and autonomy. They lead people to do their jobs—they don’t do their jobs for them. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.172: Stop Doing Your People's Work, or by reading my article in Harvard Business Review.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? S1 Ep 255Building a Better Mousetrap: The productivity reality

Episode #255 // Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: “Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door!”. This quote, espousing the value of innovation, has been liberally used and abused over the years.I came across it again recently in an article from McKinsey: Turning Around the Productivity Slowdown… so, what is productivity? And what’s the relationship between productivity and innovation? In today’s episode, I look at productivity from a number of different angles. What does it mean in the world of macroeconomics? How does productivity impact our standard of living? On a day-to-day level, what does it mean for your type of industry and organization? Can productivity provide a competitive advantage? It doesn’t matter what type of organization you’re leading in, improving productivity will reap huge benefits for all your stakeholders… including the people who work for you. But, getting your head around why you should have a constant focus on productivity improvement can be a little tricky… hopefully this episode will help.Source Material: No Bullsh!t Leadership Episode:Ep.115: Does Innovation Create Value?Ep.203: Defending Against Disruptive InnovationMcKinsey Global Institute Article:Turning Around the Productivity SlowdownDiary of a CEO EpisodeEp.252: Ex-Google Officer Speaks Out On the Dangers of AI————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Moment #25: Why Management Teams Become Stale

Moment #25 // High-performance is fragile. Teams can lose their lustre for a whole range of reasons, and leading a team of high performers can be incredibly challenging. The best teams push each other pretty hard, and it can be difficult to maintain constructive tension, without it boiling over into acrimony. And, yes, sometimes your people just stop listening to you. S1 Ep 254What the Best Leaders Do Differently with Scott J. Miller

Episode #254 // We’re approached all the time to interview other thought leaders on this podcast. However, since No Bullsh!t Leadership is predominantly a solo cast, we reluctantly decline 99% of these requests. But one email popped into our Inbox a few months ago, and we couldn’t resist it: Scott Jeffrey Miller is a speaker, author, and podcaster (sounds familiar, I know!) What’s different about Scott is that he’s worked for over 25 years with FranklinCovey, the legendary company started by Stephen Covey, which has not one, but three seminal works to draw upon:The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People The Speed of Trust, andThe 4 Disciplines of Execution (one of my favorites).Scott has worked with these original thought leaders for decades, and as host of FranklinCovey’s On Leadership podcast, he’s had access to some of the best-known and highest-profile leaders on the planet. In today’s interview, I drill into Scott’s deep learning, asking him what it’s like to interview the biggest names in business; his experience of writing best-selling books; and what’s in store for the future of leadership.Check out Scott's new book here!Connect with Scott on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottjeffreymiller/————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Moment #24: The Risks Of Office Romances

Moment #24 // As a leader, how do you set appropriate boundaries in your work relationships? How do you strike the balance between establishing trust-based, caring relationships with your people, and maintaining professional distance? The social pendulum has really swung in the last 3-5 years. Organizations are increasingly seeking to impose themselves in the personal decisions of their people. As a leader, you need to be hyper-vigilant about how these shifting dynamics can potentially affect your career. Your role is to set the tone, the pace and the standard for your people, and being in a workplace relationship makes that so much more difficult. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.14: Friendly, Not Friends.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? S1 Ep 253Lifters and Leaners: The contribution mentality

Episode #253 // In life, there tend to be two kinds of people: there are lifters and there are leaners. Lifters carry the burden for themselves and others… they take on more accountability than the average person, and they don’t rely on anyone else to make things happen. And leaners are happy to let them do so! In this episode, which I hope you find to be pretty straightforward and easy to absorb, my goal is to do just one thing: to explain the differences between lifters and leaners, and help you to clarify which one you are, right now.As a leader, you want the personal brand of being a lifter, not a leaner. Once you know the difference, the rest is up to you. Like everything in life, you get to choose your path, and make it happen… or not! I’ve also created a free PDF downloadable so that you can undertake a self-assessment which you can download here: Are you a lifter, or a leaner?Source Material: No Bullsh!t Leadership Episode:Ep.110: Getting In the ArenaMark Manson Article: The Most Important Question of Your Life————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Moment #23: Mastering Your Mindset

Moment #23 // You don't want your business to suffer the impact of poor decisions that are driven by fear. If you can sense, and then short-circuit your physiological reactions as they arise, you’ll be in a better position to implement some coping strategies, rather than just letting nature take its course. If you learn to control your physical state, it opens up the pathways for your conscious mind to handle things. S1 Ep 252Hard Lessons of the Ego: The pride before the fall

Episode #252 // Chris Licht, the former CEO of CNN, resigned recently after a scathing exposé in The Atlantic. What was supposed to be an opportunity to provide a firsthand account of a miraculous company turnaround, ended up in embarrassment, reputational damage, and the inevitable sacking. This isn’t the first time someone has invited the media to make a contemporaneous record of a firm’s excellence, only to have it backfire spectacularly! In the 1970s, British Steel was the subject of a documentary film which, instead of showcasing its leading edge management performance and industrial dominance, as had been expected, uncovered an unhealthy culture that made any aspirations of commercial excellence impossible. What causes leaders to believe their own bullsh!t? Why would they open themselves up to public scrutiny if they didn’t genuinely believe in their abilities, and the almost inevitable success of their mission? In this episode, I look at these two case studies, and dig into the root causes of hubris. Moment #22: Unmasking Reluctant Leaders

Moment #22 // Some people really don't want to lead. But they don’t necessarily know that they don’t want to. So, why would they take on a leadership role if they have no desire to lead? And how do you identify a reluctant leader? The clue is in the expectations they place upon their team? Do they lead them to greater heights, or just accept whatever an individual chooses to do on any given day? Weak leaders lower the standard to meet the performance, strong leaders lift the performance to meet the standard.Whatever you do, it’s important to set an expectation that all leaders do the hard work of leadership in their teams… even the reluctant ones. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.164: Leadership Not For You?.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? S1 Ep 250Leveraging Parenthood into Performance: Marty Interviews Em

Episode #250 // One of the most intractable issues affecting gender equity in the workplace is maternity leave. Companies and countries are trying to find ways to make it easier for women to have families, without significant disruption to their careers.  Our CEO, Emma Green recently became a mother. She’s just flown half way around the world, by herself with 9-month-old Florence to attend a Mastermind of elite business owners who’ve built huge companies, while balancing the demands of motherhood and family. As a leader, you will have to face the challenges of maternity leave at some point—if not for yourself, then certainly for others. And if you’re a current or future mother, you’ll be thinking quite a bit about balancing the needs of family, while still maintaining your performance as a leader, and without having to sacrifice promotions, pay rises, and career opportunities!  In this episode, we flip the script, as I interview Em about how the experience of balancing motherhood, and running a fast-growth business has been for her so far.Source Material: Harvard Business Review Article:Do Longer Maternity Leaves Hurt Women's CareersNo Bullsh!t Leadership Episode:Ep.183: Mentors, Coaches, and Trusted Advisors————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? S1 Ep 248The CEO and the Board: Are outcomes improving?

Episode #248 // We still seem to be witnessing some pretty spectacular failures in corporate governance. Every week, the financial press manages to uncover some sort of personal scandal, a sudden and unexpected decline in performance, or a breach of a company’s social license to operate.Even more common now, is the reporting on companies’ handling of workforce issues, like layoffs, and return to the office policies.I came across an interesting interview with one of Australia’s leading company directors, Alison Watkins, which explored the evolving relationship between the CEO and the Board. Overall, it presented quite a positive outlook. In this episode, I look at how this critical relationship is evolving, and what we can expect from boards in coming years, as we see less and less tolerance for business transgressions.Source MaterialMcKinsey Interview:In the Boardroom With Alison Watkins(22nd November, 2022)Harvard Law School ResearchMandating Women on Boards: Evidence from the United StatesNo Bullsh!t Leadership Episode:Ep.54: Managing the Board————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Moment #18: When To Part Ways With a Poor Performer

Moment #18 // How do you know when the right time is to let a poor performer go? Many leaders sit back and just hope that the person will improve. But hope isn’t a strategy. And when you’re dealing with a historically poor performer, it's rarely the case that they lift to meet the minimum acceptable standard. The most commonly cited regret of great leaders, as they reflect on their careers, is that they didn't move quickly enough to remove the people who they knew couldn’t do the job.If you’re serious about performance, you need to free up your non-performers so that they can be successful in another organization–preferably, one of your competitor’s!You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.34: When It's Time For Someone To Go.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? S1 Ep 247Achieving Operational Excellence: Leading sustainable improvement

Episode #247 // Virtually every organization has some form of operational delivery capability for its products and services. More often than not, your ability to compete in the market can be strengthened through operational excellence. But operational excellence is elusive, and many of the programs that companies invest in to deliver improved operational performance only ever realize a fraction of the potential benefits. Senior leaders often focus purely on the technical and process elements of operational performance. But the barriers that will confront you in process and technology are dwarfed by the organizational barriers that exist in your people and culture.  If you want to achieve operational excellence, your will, commitment, and appetite for doing the hard yards will be pushed to its limits. In this episode, I explore the very nature of operational excellence. Moment #17: The 5 Hidden Enemies Of High Performance

And how do you find them before they damage your team’s performance? S1 Ep 246The Curse Of Short-Term Focus: Finding a balance

Episode #246 // One of the most widespread and seemingly intractable problems facing leaders and organizations everywhere, is the drive to focus only on short-term results. And this condition doesn’t discriminate between industries, countries, or cultures. Almost everything that happens in our work lives locks us inside the prison walls of an ever-present, high-demand, short-term focus. Very few leaders develop the type of long-term perspective that enables genuine attention to where a company will be in 5 years, 10 years, and beyond.Even though I’ve trained myself over the years to take a longer-term view of the world, instinctively I’m the same as everyone else. It’s hard to break free from the pressing issues of today, when the need for immediate action is obvious, and the consequences of tomorrow feel so far away. This episode explores why almost everything in our work environment constrains us to a short-term focus. I give some concrete, real-life examples of how short-term focus manifests itself… and, of course, I leave you with a few practical tips to help you to lengthen the time horizon you look towards, in any situation.Source Material: AFR ArticleRevealed: Australia's 50 Highest Paid CEOs in 2022AFR ArticleHow Much CEOs Are Really Paid Professor David Yoffie ProfileYoffie’s HBR Profile————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? S1 Ep 245Drive For Performance or Bullying? It's a fine line...

Episode #245 // I’m a vocal advocate of strong leadership: the need to stretch people to achieve extraordinary performance, with a single-minded focus on value creation (bearing in mind, of course, that value comes in many different forms: it’s not just financial results).Recently, we’ve seen two cases from opposite sides of the world in which the stated drive for improved performance has resulted in serious allegations of bullying. The first, is Dominic Raab, the UK’s Deputy PM, who was forced to resign after allegations of bullying were raised by some of his public sector departmental staff, and the second is an unfair dismissal lawsuit brought by a former employee of Myer, Australia's largest department store chain. Each of these relies on interpretation of the events on which the allegations are founded. And even though it can often be a case of “he said / she said”, in both these instances there’s no shortage of witnesses. But did these cases genuinely involve bullying, or were they simply examples of strong leaders managing people who weren’t doing their jobs to the required standard? I begin today’s episode with a little revision on what strong leadership really is, and then I unpack these two specific cases to examine the fine lines that sometimes exist between performance drive and bullying.Source Material Referenced: No Bullsh!t Leadership Podcast Episode Ep.182: What Is Strong Leadership? The Economist - Bartleby If Enough People Think You’re a Bad Boss, Then You AreThe Australian Financial Review Myer in court over alleged executive bullying————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Moment #15 // The primary function of a leader is to create and maintain a culture that’s conducive to performance excellence… a culture where every individual is committed to giving their best every day. More often than not, cultures just grow organically, as people learn over time what the expectations and limits of the leader truly are. S1 Ep 244Cracking the Performance Management Code

Episode #244 // One of the toughest elements of leadership is managing your people’s performance. Everyone has to meet a minimum acceptable standard, of course… but beyond that, you also want to be able to lead your best people to perform at their peak.We get an endless stream of questions about the performance management ecosystem, particularly when a team member slips into chronic underperformance. There’s no doubt that every situation is different, but there are some common themes running through all of this. In today’s Q&A episode, Em guides me through a bunch of questions that explore the main aspects of the performance management cycle, including how to lead before formal performance management becomes necessary, what to do once you’re in there, and how to respond if you work in a culture that doesn’t support individual differentiation and high performance. If you don’t know where to start when it comes to making notes on your people’s performance, you won't want to miss out on the free Performance Notes Template that Em has made for this episode. This customizable GoogleSheets template (with some fictional examples on it to get you started) is the perfect tool to help you track and analyze your DR’s performance over time, which makes the performance management process MUCH easier when the time comes. S1 Ep 243Credibility: The Hallmark Of Great Leaders

Moment #13: Struggling With Simple Decisions?

Moment #13 // Do you have decision fatigue? During the course of every day, our brains are forced to make thousands of decisions, big and small. The cumulative effect of all these decisions is mental fatigue, which can result in poor judgment and irrational decision making, even when faced with relatively simple decisions. But using the decision fatigue label provides an excuse for not dealing with something that we should actually deal with. Making decisions is part of life, it's part of business, and in any senior career you need to be adept at making decisions when they need to be made. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.80: Decision Fatigue.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? S1 Ep 242Leading Older Workers: Capturing the value opportunity

Episode #242 // The question we used to ask only occasionally has now become more frequent… “how old is too old?” While most countries still regard the retirement age for the average citizen to be somewhere in their early to mid-60s, one of the big societal trends in wealthier countries is the aging population. As the population ages, many people will choose to work for longer, either to satisfy their need for purpose, or through financial necessity. The bottom line for leaders is that you’re going to be in a position where you have to lead older workers, and integrate them into a team culture that spans at least three generations. In this episode, I explore how to get the best from older workers, not to be put off by the challenge of leading them. I present some of the data on how population and demographics are changing across the world, I examine the strategic potential for value differentiation, and I give you my Six Tips for Getting the Most From Older Workers (which will be available as a free PDF downloadable).Source Material: Article: Centre for Retirement Research at BCHow Does Delayed Retirement Affect Mortality and Health?Research: Our World in DataMedian AgeResearch: Our World in DataAge StructureThe EconomistThe Age of the Grandparent Has ArrivedWikipediaRetirement Age (by Country)————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Moment #12: Blaming Others Doesn’t Help

Moment #12 // Blaming others when something doesn’t go to plan is one of the most insidious leadership behaviors. It’s a cancer in your culture that has to be eradicated. When a leader tolerates the blame game, excuses become the norm, and organizational politics thrives. You have to learn how to deliver bad news, even when your boss doesn’t want to hear about it. Equally, you have to encourage your people by rewarding those who choose to take the path of strength and proactiveness, creating a “no blame, no excuses” culture! S1 Ep 241Need More People? Here's how to convince your boss

Ep #241 // It’s always been a tough ask to get your boss to provide additional resources, whether it’s money, people, or assets. And it’s certainly not getting any easier in the current environment.Businesses in virtually every sector of the economy are being squeezed with rising costs, high interest rates, and a bear labor market. The mantra of doing more with less has never been more pronounced than it is right now: it’s simply the default position, whether by design, or by sheer necessity. So, you think you need more people to help you achieve the things you’re accountable for delivering? How would you know if this was a sensible move? And if you’re confident that it is essential, how would you sell that concept to your boss, and get the green light to bring on more people? This episode provides a definitive view of the resource landscape, so that you know how to approach any conversation at any level: and this will guide you, whether you’re proposing the case yourself, or deciding whether or not to accept a request from one of your people.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Moment #11 // One of the most important roles that a leader plays is to set the right standards for performance and behavior. S1 Ep 240The Talented Jerk: How much should you tolerate?

Episode #240 // We’ve all come across people during our careers who are really good at what they do, but are just awful to work with. They seem to think that their superior performance gives them the license to behave in any manner they see fit, and they don’t observe the usual social protocols that are essential in maintaining a stable team.Talented jerks come in many different shapes and sizes: there’s no one-size-fits-all description of how they show up in a team. Some are just terminally annoying, and you feel as though you want to roll your eyes every time they talk. Others are willfully destructive, and appear to be pushing the company’s leadership to see just how far they’ll be allowed to go before they’re brought into line.Today’s episode is pretty simple: I identify five common types of talented jerk, and give you some ideas for how to approach each situation so that you remain in control, and neutralize their impact on team culture.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? S1 Ep 239Leading In a Low Performance Culture: Can it work?

Episode #239 // The proverbial high performing team has become a leadership cliché, and I can’t count the number of leaders who claim to have built a high performing team (often, despite objective evidence to the contrary). But what if the culture you’re leading in is actually a low performance culture? We get lots of questions from leaders about the difficulties they have applying basic performance management principles and, more often than not, the root cause is a pervasive, low performance culture. It can be particularly difficult to swim against the tide in these types of organizations and, as a leader, you have to decide what type of team you want, what type of results you want, and what you want your leadership brand to ultimately stand for.In today’s episode, I give you a process that will help you to assess your culture for signs of endemic low performance… I explain why it can be so hard to improve low performance cultures… and I give you some tips for where to start if you decide to take on the challenge of leading in a low performance culture.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? S1 Ep 238Navigating Toxic Work Cultures & Office Politics: Q&A with Marty and Em

Episode #238 // Leadership drives culture, culture drives performance.Today, we look at a few very common team culture dynamics, and give some perspectives for how you might be able to handle these situations, when you find yourself in the middle of them. The first is the incredibly common phenomenon of the supposed star performer who ‘manages up’ brilliantly, but doesn’t actually deliver… and the boss is too weak, or too conflict-averse to hold them to account—they’d rather let the rest of the team bear the brunt, as long as the work is getting done somehow. The second focuses on organizational politics, and how deceptive behavior can be leveraged for advantage by those who concentrate more on politics than value creation. In this Q&A episode, I give some incredibly practical tips for how to handle each of these situations, including some of the conversations you’ll probably need to have, and the killer questions you can ask.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Moment #8: Permissive Leaders Make People Unproductive AND Unhappy

Moment #8 // Permissive Leaders Make People Unproductive AND UnhappyI've seen the devastating effects of laissez-faire leaders. They seem to think that if you keep people happy, they’ll naturally give you their best work. In my experience, this is almost never the case. Worse still, these leaders often mistake a constructive culture, to mean you can only say positive things to people.  Make no mistake, there's nothing soft about a constructive culture. S1 Ep 236It’s All In the Mind: The mental game of leadership

Episode #236 // Have you ever wondered why people who are clearly at the top of their game all of a sudden have a steep decline in performance? Things that they’ve been able to routinely do at an elite level all of a sudden seem to be beyond their reach.I saw an example of this just recently, where a professional NFL footballer inexplicably lost the plot. His physical abilities were no different after the slump in form as they were prior to the slump. But it looked like his mental state was night-and-day different! What happens if you have a crisis of confidence in your own leadership? There’s a big difference between having healthy doubts, and having the sort of mental collapse that hijacks your very ability to perform. In this episode, I discuss those differences, and give you some tactics for dealing with any performance declines so that, at worst, they’re short-lived, and at best you emerge from them even stronger than before.Resources referenced:ESPN WebsiteBrett Maher 2022 NFL Statsspotrac.comBrett Maher SalaryWikipediaIan Baker-FinchNo Bullsh!t LeadershipEp.229 Confidence, Arrogance, and Self-doubt————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? S1 Ep 235Our Framework Facelift: No Bullsh!t Leadership Evolves

Episode #235 // Momentum is really picking up for Your CEO Mentor in 2023, so in this episode I thought I’d share our plans for the evolution of No Bullsh!t Leadership.Of course, the fundamentals will remain the same. Our purpose keeps us focused on delivering practical, high-quality content every week to cut through the spin, the noise, and the political correctness that dominate today’s world of leadership development. We’re here for one reason, and one reason only: to improve the quality of leaders, globally. This is why I get out of bed in the morning, and it’s why Em and the team at Your CEO Mentor Global HQ, as we like to call it, are constantly innovating… to increase our market reach, so that we can influence as many leaders as humanly possible. Our staples are the weekly podcast, and our twice-yearly public cohorts of Leadership Beyond the Theory.
