Moment #49: Want To Be Successful? Pull Your Weight!
Moment #49 // There are two types of people in the world: lifters and leaners. Lifters carry the burden for themselves and others… they take on more accountability than the average person, and they don’t rely on anyone else to make things happen. And leaners? Well they’re happy to let the lifters do the work! Anyone who’s genuinely successful (and I’m not simply talking about people with power, status, and money) is a lifter! From the earliest available opportunity, you need to adopt the mentality and mindset of a lifter. Like everything in life, you get to choose your path, and make it happen… or not!You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.253: Lifters and Leaners.————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally. 👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. S1 Ep 278The Five Best Episodes of 2023 as Chosen by Marty & Em
Episode #278 // We’ve been producing this podcast now for over five years and, as we traditionally do at this time of year, Em and I are taking a look back on the year of podcast content. We’ve picked out our favorite episodes for you to go back and listen to while you’re enjoying some downtime in the New Year. We’ve had another cracking year at Your CEO Mentor: one where our global reach continues to grow! I’ve been living in the US now for over 2 years… Em’s daughter, Florence, is now walking and talking – a proper little human – and everything is going pretty much to plan. But it’s not without its challenges! In last week’s episode, we reviewed our 2023 business performance, looking at the things that went really well, and the things that didn’t go so well. You may have missed a few episodes in the last 12 months, especially if you’re new to the podcast. So, in an effort to make sure you still get to capture the real gold, we’ve curated what we think are some of our not-to-be-missed moments. These episodes capture the essence of key leadership imperatives, like building your credibility, and knowing how to tread that fine line between confidence and arrogance! Moment #48: Building a Culture of Healthy Disagreement
Moment #48 // One of the things that characterizes a high-performing team is the ability to withstand and harness the value that lies in healthy disagreement. In this moment, I look at the example of a failed company that demanded their employees needed to be loyal, above all else. In my book, loyalty means fearlessly telling the truth to the people above you, no matter what. But to them, it meant bowing to their authority and not challenging them in any way… particularly if they had bad or inconvenient news to deliver. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.31: Don’t Shoot the Messenger and check out my TEDX Talk, The Surprising Power of Constructive Conflict! ————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally. 👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. Moment #47: Are You Chasing Attributes, Or Competencies?
Moment #47 // There are literally thousands of articles and posts written every week about the attributes of great leaders. Humility, Transparency, Fallibility, Integrity. Although it’s fun and interesting to muse on these attributes, they lack any real clarity. If you actually decided that you wanted to take action to develop one of these attributes, where would you start? What habits and disciplines would you need to develop? Rather than debating the merits of leadership attributes, we need to focus more on leadership competencies. What do leaders need to competently do, in order to successfully deliver value for their teams and companies? You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.25: The Roadmap to Exceptional Leadership.I also recommend listening to Ep.229: Confidence, Arrogance, and Self-Doubt.————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally. 👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. S1 Ep 276Building Leadership Confidence: Small steps yield BIG results!
Episode #276 // One of the biggest barriers to change, in any area of your life, is your own awareness of the size of the gap—that gap between your current state and your desired state. And I’m no different to anyone else! I’ve struggled with this principle over the years in a number of different areas… When I stacked on a few pounds after a running injury, I knew how much work it would take to get back to racing weight… and that became a barrier to starting my recovery process.Often, the gap is so daunting that we feel like we don’t know where to begin. But in almost every case… we actually do! We just don’t want to face into it, because we know that, once we start, we have a mountain of work ahead of us. In this episode, I take you through the process of not just starting, but mastering what you know you need to be doing, as a leader. I simply give you a couple of leadership areas where most of you are probably underdone, and help you to work out both where to start, and how to keep momentum, by gaining the confidence that you will be successful… if only you can persevere!Download the free Personal Leadership Audit mentioned in the episode here: www.yourceomentor.com/personal-leadership-audit ————————TAKE OUR LATEST FREE TRAINING WITH MARTY 👇THE ART OF ASKING: How to network, interview and negotiate with precision to land your dream job!In this free training, he'll reveal how to take control and craft compelling questions that make you stand out in any job search scenario.————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally. 👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. Moment #46: Do Your Own Job
Moment #46 // As you transition through to more senior leadership roles, you’ll realize that you can’t continue to compensate for your people when they don’t deliver the results you want. You have to do your job, not their job. There are all sorts of repercussions to dipping down, and not working at the right level. Like, not focusing on your own job; like, diluting the accountability model; like, robbing your people of the chance to grow. S1 Ep 275When Should You Let Someone Go? Are Guenther’s days numbered?
Episode #275 // One of the most common questions I field from our leadership community is, “Marty, how much time should I give someone when they’re not performing, before I make the decision to let them go?”Like most questions in business, the answer is, “It depends”. Your job, as a leader, is to work out what it depends upon, and to position yourself to make a decisive judgment call in any situation. In this episode, I take a look at the example of the Haas F1 Racing Team, and its principal, Guenther Steiner, who has led an underperforming team in a high-performance sport for almost 10 years.I also discuss some of the dimensions of performance and behavior that you’ll need to think about when you’re deciding what to do with an under-performer.But, most importantly, I give you one of the most valuable free resources I’ve ever produced: my six-step framework for making what are often incredibly difficult decisions about your people. It’s never an easy thing to decide to let someone go, but if you stick your head in the sand when you’re confronted with an under-performer, your team will inevitably become mediocre: your poor performers will stay, and anyone decent who wants to be on a winning team will find other alternatives!————————JOIN LANDING YOUR DREAM JOB: Our new short course framework gives you practical, achievable steps that will maximize your talent, experience, and professional potential!Click here to learn more and enrollIn the course we cover: Targeting the right opportunitiesMobilizing your network Preparing for the interview Asking the right questions Evaluating a role Negotiating your package————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally. 👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. Moment #45: It's a Marathon, Not a Sprint
Moment #45 // With the sustained, relentless pressure of performing as a leader in today’s business world, combined with the expectation that you’ll also perform in every other area of your life, it’s incredibly easy to burn out. That’s why it’s so important to have long-term strategies that make your life sustainable: strategies that, even when you hit the peaks of pressure that ebb and flow, you know how to manage your way through it.You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.187: Avoiding Burnout.————————JOIN LANDING YOUR DREAM JOB: Our new short course framework gives you practical, achievable steps that will maximize your talent, experience, and professional potential!Click here to learn more and enrollIn the course we cover: Targeting the right opportunitiesMobilizing your network Preparing for the interview Asking the right questions Evaluating a role Negotiating your package————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally. 👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. Moment #44: Leading for Long-Term Success
Moment #44 // If you’re in it for yourself, your people will never be in it for you. Ever. Self-seeking leaders can’t bring out the best in their people, because it’s almost impossible to rally them to a higher purpose. One of the keys to unlocking your people’s discretionary effort, and stretching them to perform at the next level, is that you have to subordinate short-term considerations for the greater good. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.29: Winning Without Self-Interest.————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally. 👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. S1 Ep 273Leadership is Never Black or White: 1,000 annoying shades of gray
Episode #273 // In order to convey the No Bullsh!t Leadership principles concisely, I explain them in quite categorical terms—it has to be that way so that you can understand the principles sufficiently well to implement them. But, as with everything in life, nothing is just black or white… there are exceptions, there are judgment calls, and there are 1,000 annoying shades of gray!A CEO who I’m quite close to recently challenged my mantra of friendly, not friends, and I realized that, while I explain the core principles in black-and-white terms, the implementation is anything but that! You might have heard me speak about other principles like:Respect before popularityDon’t dip downExcellence over perfectionSimplicity and focusSpeed over accuracyOne head to palm one arse to kickIn this episode, I explore some of those shades of gray… some of the nuances of these critical principles. This should help you to understand how to put the principles into context a little better… after all, they live on a continuum, not in a simple binary relationship.————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally. 👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. Moment #43: Where Stress Meets Performance
Moment #43 // We generally talk about stress like it's a bad thing. Putting people under stress is something that many leaders try to avoid. Why? Because, if you put people under stress, then maybe they won't like you anymore. Instead, we choose to lean into our well-developed power of rationalization, and do everything we can to give ourselves a reason to not ask our people to stretch. But, unfortunately, stress is a prerequisite for high performance… You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.148: Stretching Your People.————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally. 👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. S1 Ep 272How to Ask Excellent Questions: Nailing interviews, networking and negotiations
Episode #272 // According to LinkedIn, 70% of the global workforce isn't actively job searching, but 87% are open to new opportunities. This reflects a universal truth in the professional world – many are passively open to new job opportunities, yet they rarely actively pursue them. It's a common trap that we see even the most ambitious leaders fall into: passively waiting, relying on people in their existing networks to approach them, or counting on that internal promotion that's 'just around the corner'.If you have any ambition to climb the ladder, it's time to make a choice:Are you going to remain passive, and let someone else dictate the pace and flow, or are you going to step into the void and take control? If you're ready to increase the level of control you have over your career, this week’s episode is going to help you - a lot! I’m really excited to share with you the replay of the live training Marty did earlier this week on the art of asking. Moment #42: Why You Shouldn’t ‘Just Do It!’
Moment #42 // Have you ever questioned your boss about a particular task, and at the end of a brief exchange, he simply says: “Look, just do it, OK?” Although I’m sure no one sets out to become a Nike boss, sometimes it’s simply the product of a leader being overworked… or not having sufficient information about why something needs to be done… or because explaining would be difficult and time-consuming… or because it may potentially put them in a situation of escalating conflict.Nike bosses are hard to work for, so think carefully about how you handle these situations. S1 Ep 271The Wellness Puzzle with Kristel Bauer
Episode #271 // In today’s evolving world of business, there’s an ever-increasing focus on employee wellness. Mental health, which was a taboo subject until fairly recently, now has to be front-of-mind for every leader.A leader’s duty of care for their people used to be confined to the workplace. Now, there’s an increasingly broad interpretation of a leader’s obligations to look after their people, which is much more holistic, and reaches well beyond the boundaries of the workplace. And still, the vast majority of leaders have no training in psychology, and are ill-equipped to deal with many of the situations that inevitably arise. This episode tackles some of the issues around employee health, wellness, and resilience, as they relate to business leadership… and to go really deep on this, I’ve enlisted the aid of wellness expert, Kristel Bauer, host of the Live Greatly podcast.————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally. 👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. S1 Ep 270Squeezing the Juice from Innovation: Maximizing the value of creativity
Episode #270 // Innovation is key to sustained performance. Whether we look at it from a company perspective, or at the level of countries and global economies, innovation fuels productivity and growth. We’ve seen this over and over throughout the centuries, where a technological or scientific breakthrough has driven new levels of prosperity that were previously unimagined. We now live in the most affluent times in human history. Our life expectancy and our standard of living is massively higher than it’s ever been.Innovation, at the market level, drives much of this prosperity. And at the level of the individual firm, innovation is an essential ingredient of competitive advantage. Squeezing every last drop out of the innovation lemon requires trade-offs, and if you don’t make these trade-offs consciously, they’ll be made for you. This episode explores some of the key trade-offs that leaders need to make when trying to stimulate innovation, while still maintaining control, including:Long-term v short-term valueProcess control v creative adaptationCentralized v decentralized decision makingAccountability v collaborationSource Material: United Nations Poverty StatisticsMillennium Development GoalsChange to Life Expectancy (50 Years)Macrotrends ResearchPatent FilingsRanking for Top CompaniesNo Bullsh!t Leadership episodes:Ep.115: Does Innovation Create Value?Ep.203: Defending Against Disruptive Innovation————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally. 👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. Moment #40: How to REALLY get results
Moment #40 // Simplicity goes hand-in-hand with focus. We all try to do too much, for all the right reasons, and with the best intent. But, more often than not, this is incredibly counter-productive. As a leader, value, performance, and forward momentum all rely on having a crystal clear focus on the right things. But this is hard to achieve, because perfectionism hides in complexity. Even though The Pursuit of Perfection sounds noble, more often than not it’s simply masking the fear of getting something wrong.Your leadership mantra has to be Excellence Over Perfection. Otherwise you're going to end up working tirelessly on something that doesn't make any real difference. S1 Ep 269Performing After Promotion: From peer to leader
Episode #269 // One of the positive (and virtually inevitable) outcomes of improving your leadership confidence and capability is that your opportunities for promotion start to come thick and fast. And there’s a reason for this: as your leadership skill improves, so do the results that your teams achieve. But when you've already achieved best-in-class performance, you’re expected to know what you're doing in any given situation. The people who promote you assume that you'll continue to be largely self-sufficient. But that's not always the case when you're thrust into an unfamiliar role. This episode outlines the essential steps for transitioning to any new role, with special focus on the common scenario of being promoted to lead the team that you were once part of.————————Do you feel like a square peg in a round hole in your current job? ✨ Be the first to explore our brand new resource on finding your dream job! Moment #39: Does Your Education Determine Your Opportunities?
Moment #39 // Formal education is important to establish a baseline for your career. It’s like buying a ticket to the dance. But management and leadership education comes later in your career, and it’s often valued very differently, depending on where you live. In Australia, an MBA is entirely optional… in the US, it’s essential if you’re serious about progressing to the heights of corporate America. No matter where you live, though, education in all its forms is there to support your development so that you can perform better. That's the bottom line. S1 Ep 268How To Get Through To Your People: Use this golden question
Episode #268 // We know that every individual is unique, and despite all the conventional wisdom about how to motivate people, everyone is completely different in regard to what drives them. In my experience, you never really know what’s going to switch the lights on for someone. You just have to keep trying, over and over, to reach every single person. This means you have to use different (sometimes novel) techniques, and varying levels of pressure. When you see a breakthrough, it’s priceless… it’s worth every moment you’ve spent, and every ounce of energy you’ve put into it. But you also have to be OK with putting in the time and energy and not achieving a breakthrough… because, unfortunately, that’s the more common outcome! This episode begins unconventionally, with a story from the hit TV series, Breaking Bad. I then recount one of the early wins in my career, when I was able to get through to someone. Moment #38: Does More Information = Better Decisions?
Moment #38 // Is the virtually limitless supply of cheap, instantaneously-accessible information making it easier for us to make decisions? And are those decisions any better than the ones we made 20 years ago?Malcolm Gladwell says, “We clutter our decision-making process with extraneous information in the hope that it makes us better off in the end. It's a fool's game.”This moment reminds us to focus on what's most important. Too much information just makes it harder for us to process the information we actually have. S1 Ep 267Management vs. Leadership: What’s the difference?
Episode #267 // Every so often, we produce an episode of No Bullsh!t Leadership that challenges conventional leadership wisdom. I call them my 'myth buster' episodes, and in the past, I’ve taken on some of the most widely accepted axioms: Are happy workers really productive workers? Why is leading from the front a bad idea? Why do consensus-based decisions deliver inferior outcomes? Why is imposter syndrome good for you?Challenging conventional wisdom is tricky, because there’s always at least some measure of truth to it. But we can’t allow ourselves to fall into the habit of accepting these statements as truisms, without considering them a little more rigorously. If we do, we run the risk of believing our own bullsh!t.In this episode, I challenge the notion that management and leadership are separate disciplines: one being aspirational and virtuous, the other being somehow lesser. This is a very practical episode, where I briefly explore the traditional concepts of leadership and management, and then bring them to life with a number of real world examples that demonstrate how intertwined and inseparable the two concepts truly are.Source Material: Harvard Business Review article:You’re a Leader Now: Not Everyone is Going To Like You————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. Moment #37: Shifting Mindsets for Inclusive Hiring
Moment #37 // There's no doubt that systemic bias exists in hiring - but sometimes, even with the best intentions, it's really difficult to improve diversity. Quite often, you’re simply dealing with a shallow pool of talent. Entrenched beliefs and attitudes at lower levels of an organization act as a barrier to progress - not just for women, but for any minority group that's not the typical appointee. The homogenous, safe candidate is effectively ‘green lit’ all the way through the process. It's sometimes hard to find the right candidate, who will improve outcomes by offering greater diversity. But it's even harder to change the mindset of the decision-makers who occupy positions of relative power, at all levels of an organization. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.202: Eliminating Selection Bias.————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. S1 Ep 266What the Best CEOs Do: Achieving Aspirational Performance
Episode #266 // Some of the most impactful transformation work that I saw in large industrial firms came as a result of McKinsey’s involvement: everything from procurement to capital productivity, and operational performance.Last year, three McKinsey partners published a book titled, CEO Excellence: The six mindsets that distinguish the best leaders from the rest. After examining more than 20 years’ worth of data on 7,800 CEOs from 3,500 public companies, they conducted detailed interviews with 67 high-performing CEOs and synthesized their findings in this book. The CEOs interviewed include household names like Mary Barra (GM), Jamie Dimon (JPMorgan Chase), Herbert Hainer (Adidas), Reed Hastings (Netflix), Kaz Hirai (Sony), and Satya Nadella (Microsoft). In this episode, I look at some of the conclusions that were drawn in the book, and discuss them in a way that provides an enlightening summary, from my humble perspective. My hope is that this will help you transition to the most senior ranks of leadership.————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. Moment #36: Is Your Team Addicted to Crisis?
Moment #36 // Well-run businesses can be boring. They don't experience frequent crises and they don't encounter surprises at every turn. Why? Because the leaders understand risk, and they plan accordingly, avoiding the majority of disasters that other companies routinely face. Poorly-run companies thrive on crisis management and firefighting. Once this becomes the predominant culture, people become comfortable living in a break/fix cycle. There's never any real focus on eliminating the root cause of the problem. And there's no leadership drive to reduce the risk that something might fail in the first place. This is a bit like covering a melanoma with a band-aid.You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.167: Getting Ahead of the Next Crisis.————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. S1 Ep 265Leadership’s Most Underrated Ingredient
Episode #265 // Em and I work our butts off every day to produce high-quality, practical leadership content that you can apply immediately, to improve your team’s capability and performance. And, even though we talk about the emotional, psychological, and mental barriers that have to be overcome to achieve leadership excellence, what I don’t often talk about is the personal investment in the relationship capital that makes all this possible. You may have heard me talk about the need to establish a high level of trust with your people, and to have boundless empathy (tempered with the strength to do what needs to be done, because you’re courageously committed to getting the absolute best possible outcomes). But what it boils down to, in very simple terms is this: if you aspire to be one of those rare individuals who can move from being a competent leader to a great leader, it takes something more—a deep sense of caring for your people. This is the ingredient that unlocks your ability to do the really hard work of leadership!Source MaterialFast Company article:Grim survey finds workers around the world have a toxic relationship with their jobsImpactEleven website:ImpactElevenSeth Mattison website:Seth MattisonNo Bullsh!t Leadership episode:Ep.1: Respect Before Popularity ————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. And, at each new layer, you're in competition for the next spot above you with a bunch of other smart, ambitious people from both inside and outside your organization.Even though I’d never hold up my own career path as something you should try to emulate, there are some interesting learnings to take from it. S1 Ep 264Controlling Without Micromanaging: Getting the balance right
Episode #264 // I read an article in the MIT Sloan Management Review, titled The Art of Balancing Autonomy and Control, which outlines how to get the best results from the innovation activities your company undertakes. The moral of the story is, nose in, fingers out! This led me to think more broadly about the concept of autonomy v control, in particular how it relates to optimizing both performance and employee satisfaction. If you give your people too much autonomy, you risk wasting a lot of effort doing the wrong things… if you exert too much control, you fall into the trap of micromanaging, which introduces inefficiencies and demotivates your people in the process. I learned throughout my career that balancing autonomy and control isn’t just an esoteric discussion: understanding and executing the principle is a critical leadership imperative that will either enhance or degrade the results you achieve. In this episode, I look at the fundamental trade-offs between autonomy and control; I share a little about my journey to increasing control, without becoming a micromanager; and I give some really practical tips for striking the right balance with each individual in your team.Source Material: MIT Sloan Management Review:The Art of Balancing Autonomy and ControlWikipedia Entry:Situational Leadership TheoryAmazon Book:The One Minute Manager ————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. Moment #34: The Power of Transparent Leadership
Moment #34 // They say that the best disinfectant is sunlight, and I'm a huge believer in that principle. If my direct reports in CS Energy heard it once they heard it a thousand times: transparency is everything. But just how much transparency should you give to your people? Issues of trust, accountability, confidentiality, and context all play a part in how much transparency it’s reasonable to offer. Like many areas of leadership, it can be a complex balance!I wrote an article on this subject for Harvard Business Review earlier this year, which is worth a read. S1 Ep 263How I Keep Learning: My 5 Hot Tips
Episode #263 // After speaking to a group of Executive MBA students last week, I had pause to reflect on my career journey, my educational choices, and what I considered to be the determinants of my modest success to date.If I really distilled the key things that have helped me to grow rapidly over the years, what would they be? I’ve often said that leaders are learners, but you could spend a lot of time these days consuming information, without getting traction: and by traction, I mean gaining the wisdom and insight that would differentiate you as a leader. Although I wouldn’t recommend to anyone that they try to emulate my career path, by the same token I think I’ve managed to maximize the potential of my learning opportunities over the years. These learnings made me better, and I guess that’s really the only yardstick you can use—what’s the relative improvement in you. It’s not about anyone else, it’s about taking responsibility for becoming better over time. If you’re a leader, your people’s welfare will depend on it! Moment #33: Overcoming the Need to be Liked
Moment #33 // Why is it so difficult to get over the need to be liked? Because it’s completely ingrained… it's programmed into all of us. It's part of our DNA and it's controlled by our reptilian brain. It's an instinctive response. But, counterintuitively, to be a competent leader you have to overcome that fundamental evolutionary urge. Putting Respect Before Popularity requires a huge amount of empathy, which is why it’s so important to have a highly-developed EQ. Episode #261 // The central element of the No Bullsh!t Leadership Framework is value. It should be the primary focus of every leader, at every level, in every organization. Value first… that’s it!Although we automatically think of financial value, value can be created in many different forms. Your imperative, as a leader, is to understand which of the things your people do genuinely create value, and which things simply generate activity for its own sake. If you can manage to align the work that creates the most value for your company, with the things that benefit your people individually, you will absolutely turbo-charge your team’s performance! This episode dives into the world of value, outlining the key principles of value delivery, describing what a value-driven culture looks like, and exposing some of the common organizational barriers to value creation.Download the FREE PDF that accompanies this episode at www.yourceomentor.com/episode261 ————————Doors for Leadership Beyond the Theory September 2023 are NOW OPEN! But, then again, with the benefit of hindsight and wisdom, I’ve come to realize that the depth and value of any lessons comes from the very fact that they are hard fought and won. Once you learn them, by starting at the right place, going through the trial and error, (and, yes, a little of the essential pain), these lessons stay learned, indelibly imprinted on your psyche. In this episode, I look at the life lessons that took me every one of my 61 years to learn, and the leadership lessons that gave me the ability to formulate my No Bullsh!t Leadership framework. Different lessons come to all of us at different times, which is why your ability to step back to see the big picture is key.————————Access Marty's Proven Strategies to Motivate Your Team and Optimize PerformanceJOIN OUR FREE BOOTCAMP **MOTIVATE TO ELEVATE** HERE————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentor Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/yourceomentorYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor ————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. Moment #29: Balancing Banter With Boundaries
Moment #29 // Having close friends is one of life’s ultimate joys. But, as a leader, that’s the last thing you want. Being friends with someone who works for you dilutes your objectivity. And no matter how much you think you can overcome this, the reality is… you can’t!A friend in your team will take advantage of your good nature… and you’ll cut them more slack than you should. It’s not intentional, but it is unavoidable. This kills the meritocracy culture. When friendliness turns into friendship, the unintended consequences are counterproductive to everything you want to achieve, as a leader. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.197: Why Can't We Be Friends?.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? S1 Ep 258Future Trends in Business: Where are we heading?
Episode #258 // One of the principal occupations of many consultants, speakers, and business experts is to try to predict the future. And, although this is virtually impossible, it doesn’t stop them from trying! If you’re a regular listener, you’ll know that I try to stay away from predictions for the most part. I’d rather deal with the leadership imperatives that drive performance, and work out how to apply these timeless principles to any given context… This is a subtle but important distinction, and it’s why I feel pretty confident about the guidance I give: how do you apply the proven tools and strategies that I’ve learned in 30+ years of leading at the highest levels. It’s always fun and interesting to look at emerging trends, though, and to extrapolate those to see where they might be taking us. Today, I’m going to indulge in a little bit of that! The World Economic Forum published an article a little while back titled, “Five Key Trends Shaping the New World of Work.” After chewing over these five trends, I thought it’d be worth sharing them with you, and giving some consideration to how likely it is that they’ll dominate our thinking in the medium to long term.Source Material: Economist Article:What Are the Chances of an AI Apocalypse?World Economic Forum ArticleFive Key Trends Shaping the New World of WorkNo Bullsh!t Leadership Episode:Ep.218: Is Working From Home Working?Ep.95: The Joys of OutsourcingEp.221: Managing Supplier RelationshipsDiary of a CEO EpisodeEp.252: Ex-Google Officer Speaks Out On the Dangers of AI————————Join the Leadership Beyond the Theory waitlist here!————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. Moment #28: When Should You Outsource?
Moment #28 // How do you go about making an outsourcing decision for your company? It’s important to be clear on exactly why you want to outsource, and to understand the relative cost of doing something yourself, as opposed to having a specialist external firm do it for you.Knowing when to outsource is as critical as any skill you need in business, and this Moment exposes the key questions you need to ask to nail it.You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.95: The Joys Of Outsourcing.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? S1 Ep 257Your Leadership User Manual: Clarifying expectations for success
Episode #257 // I came across an article by Shanna Hocking, which introduced me to the concept of the Leadership User Manual. Hocking credits its origins to Adam Bryant, who wrote an article almost 10 years ago titled, What if you had to write a user manual about your leadership style? Imagine the power of a physical document that can help your people to understand how they can best work with you. What a great idea! Knowing how your boss operates, and what he values, could save you years of guesswork, as the only other way to work it out is through trial and error. I wish I’d thought of this years ago! In this episode, I take a deep dive into the concept of the leadership user manual. I look at the benefits and risks, and I take you along the journey with me as I develop my own inaugural leadership user manual. We’ve also created a leadership user manual template, a free download, so that you can develop your own guide.Source Material: Books (on Amazon)One Bold Move a Day - Shanna HockingPrinciples - Ray DalioFast Company Article:How to be the boss everyone wants to work for - Shanna HockingLinkedIn ArticlesLeaders Need User Manuals (and what I learned by writing mine) - Abby FalikWhat if you had to write a "User Manual” about your leadership style? - Adam Bryant————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Moment #27: Defining Weak Leadership
Moment #27 // Weak leaders are characterized by what they’re not prepared to do.Weak leaders are unwilling to push back on the boss; they don't put the team's interests ahead of their own; they’re unwilling to set ambitious goals; they’re afraid to challenge, coach, and confront their people; and they’re reluctant to challenge the status quo. What's the price of leadership weakness? Unrealized potential; poor performance; lack of market competitiveness.Eventually, this leads to job cuts, restructures, and redundancies. And in some cases, the company won’t survive. Weak leaders allow performance to slip, and the outcomes are entirely predictable. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.68: The Price Of Leadership Weakness.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? S1 Ep 256Barriers to Building Emotional Intelligence with Dr Rebecca Heiss
Episode #256 // The concept of EQ isn’t new. It was the subject of academic research way back in the 1960s, but it took another 30 years before we gained widespread awareness of it through Daniel Goleman’s classic book, Emotional Intelligence. These days, we have fairly robust tests to measure a person's EQ, and I would never hire a senior executive without having them take those tests… it’s not the be-all-and-end-all, but it does provide another data point to calibrate the observations you make in other parts of the recruitment and selection process. What are the barriers to building your own EQ? To deal with this question, I’ve enlisted the aid of Dr Rebecca Heiss, who’s an expert in all things human behavior and leadership. Her book, Instinct, is all about how to rewire our brains to remove some of the barriers to success. This fascinating discussion may help you to break through some of the barriers that are holding you back.————————This week, I'm doing something that I've never done before. Moment #26: From Individual Contributor to Leader
Moment #26 // Of the many mistakes that new leaders are prone to make, over-functioning for certain individuals is one of the most common, and the most insidious. When you do this, it tells your people that what they're doing isn't good enough. It trains them to be lazy and complacent, because you'll always step in to finish their job for them if you’re not happy. And they'll keep getting paid for not doing their job to the standard you expect. Excellent leaders give their people clarity of purpose, resources, coaching, and autonomy. They lead people to do their jobs—they don’t do their jobs for them. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.172: Stop Doing Your People's Work, or by reading my article in Harvard Business Review.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? S1 Ep 255Building a Better Mousetrap: The productivity reality
Episode #255 // Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: “Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door!”. This quote, espousing the value of innovation, has been liberally used and abused over the years.I came across it again recently in an article from McKinsey: Turning Around the Productivity Slowdown… so, what is productivity? And what’s the relationship between productivity and innovation? In today’s episode, I look at productivity from a number of different angles. What does it mean in the world of macroeconomics? How does productivity impact our standard of living? On a day-to-day level, what does it mean for your type of industry and organization? Can productivity provide a competitive advantage? It doesn’t matter what type of organization you’re leading in, improving productivity will reap huge benefits for all your stakeholders… including the people who work for you. But, getting your head around why you should have a constant focus on productivity improvement can be a little tricky… hopefully this episode will help.Source Material: No Bullsh!t Leadership Episode:Ep.115: Does Innovation Create Value?Ep.203: Defending Against Disruptive InnovationMcKinsey Global Institute Article:Turning Around the Productivity SlowdownDiary of a CEO EpisodeEp.252: Ex-Google Officer Speaks Out On the Dangers of AI————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Moment #25: Why Management Teams Become Stale
Moment #25 // High-performance is fragile. Teams can lose their lustre for a whole range of reasons, and leading a team of high performers can be incredibly challenging. The best teams push each other pretty hard, and it can be difficult to maintain constructive tension, without it boiling over into acrimony. And, yes, sometimes your people just stop listening to you. S1 Ep 254What the Best Leaders Do Differently with Scott J. Miller
Episode #254 // We’re approached all the time to interview other thought leaders on this podcast. However, since No Bullsh!t Leadership is predominantly a solo cast, we reluctantly decline 99% of these requests. But one email popped into our Inbox a few months ago, and we couldn’t resist it: Scott Jeffrey Miller is a speaker, author, and podcaster (sounds familiar, I know!) What’s different about Scott is that he’s worked for over 25 years with FranklinCovey, the legendary company started by Stephen Covey, which has not one, but three seminal works to draw upon:The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People The Speed of Trust, andThe 4 Disciplines of Execution (one of my favorites).Scott has worked with these original thought leaders for decades, and as host of FranklinCovey’s On Leadership podcast, he’s had access to some of the best-known and highest-profile leaders on the planet. In today’s interview, I drill into Scott’s deep learning, asking him what it’s like to interview the biggest names in business; his experience of writing best-selling books; and what’s in store for the future of leadership.Check out Scott's new book here!Connect with Scott on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottjeffreymiller/————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability?
