S1 Ep 6The Psychology of Feedback: Stop avoiding leadership work
Episode #6 // One of the most critical skills for a leader is the ability to challenge, coach and confront his or her people. This requires many direct, honest, empathetic conversations. Many leaders never master this, and spend most of their careers avoiding confrontation, only having a difficult conversation when it is virtually impossible to avoid. If you only listen to one episode of this podcast, I hope it’s this one! Being able to comfortably give and receive feedback is one of the most important skills a leader can have. I have seen more leaders than I care to count, kill their careers because they are unable to give feedback to their people and therefore, are unable to create a high performing team that is able to deliver results. It’s so important, that I’ve dedicated an entire module to handling conflict in my program Leadership Beyond the Theory. So in today’s episode, we're going to talk about why being able to give feedback is the cornerstone of leadership success. I will then talk through:Why most leaders avoid these conversationsA tough question that will make you evaluate your aspirations to be a leader (this will take some honest self reflection, but it will help you focus in the long run)The common fears we face when a difficult conversation is ahead of usA great perspective on difficult conversations from NAB’s CEO, Andrew ThorburnMy five lenses to view feedback through, which will help you turn the uncomfortable into the comfortable (this can be - SHOULD BE - downloaded here, so that you can reference it every time you need to have a tough conversation)My hope is that these five lenses will drive you to change your approach to feedback, and work on it until you are comfortable. If they don’t, then my only suggestion is that you should re-evaluate your leadership aspirations. Either that, or accept that you will have a career full of misery, self-delusion, and negative impact on people - which I’m sure is the last thing you want!I also reference a brilliant article by Mark Manson called ‘The Most Important Question of Your Life’, which I strongly recommend you read.I’d love to know if this hit the mark for you, and helped you with any difficult conversations this week, so please head over to my LinkedIn page and send me a direct message (I read and reply to every single one) or send me an email [email protected].👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. S1 Ep 5Using Power Wisely: Why HOW we get results actually matters
EEpisode #5 // To be an outstanding leader, you need to understand power; what it is, and how to use it. Knowing what the different types of power are, and having awareness of what power you are using when, is fundamental to building a high performing team, that delivers discretionary effort for its leader. We all exercise different types of power each day in our relationships with others, so we’re going to start this episode by exploring what the different types of power actually are. We’ll then cover:What power looks like at its worst (when leaders abuse their power)We'll discuss how the different types of power affect both us and our peopleSome rules of thumb for exercising the different types of power as a leader in your organisation (these are available to download here)This episode takes some great research theory, and provides a practical roadmap for leaders to use. There are some hidden gems in there that will really help you evaluate the type of power you use with your people to get the job done. Challenge yourself this week and see if you can consciously use the influence of referent power instead of another type, to achieve results.I’d love to know how effective you find the different types of power to get the results you’re after, so please head over to my LinkedIn page and send me a direct message or send me an email [email protected]👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. S1 Ep 3Excellence Over Perfection: Laying the foundations for successful execution
EEpisode #3 // If you want your organisation to deliver outstanding results, as a leader you must adopt a mantra of “excellence over perfection”. In this episode we uncover why perfectionism can be debilitating for an organisation, and how your people will respond to the goal of delivering excellence. Many of you would be familiar with the Pareto Principle (the 80/20 rule). However, no matter how much we believe it, driving a culture of excellence through your organisation can be difficult. In the context of increasingly high expectations from customers, boards, shareholders, investors, and executive teams, many leaders are overcome with a quest for perfect outcomes, preventing their people from producing the excellent work that moves an organisation forward. This is one of our favourite topics, because it can almost immediately lift the results that your organisation is able to achieve, even without changing anything else! Today we’ll cover:How does perfectionism work against you personally, and simultaneously demotivate your team? Why do some people intuitively choose perfection over excellence? Hint: Most of these are subconscious choices but make so much sense when you’re aware of themA lesson that Zoolander can teach us about perfectionismThe 5 benefits of developing a culture of excellence over perfection (these will get your head around how it will make your team work significantly better overall)A story from my own experience of being a perfectionist without even realising it, and the negative effect this had on my teamThe 6 key strategies that you can implement TODAY to engender a culture of excellence - these are available to download belowI hope this episode gives you some great tips on how to create a culture of excellence over perfection in your team, or at the very least, provoke some self reflection on the impact your pursuit of perfection has on your team’s output and attitude.I strongly encourage you to download the worksheet and pick a few of your favourite points to implement with your team immediately.I’d love to know how you go with this, so as always, if you’ve found this useful, head over to my LinkedIn page and send me a direct message. If you’re loving the podcast, please subscribe and leave a rating, so that we can reach more leaders like you!👉 Doors are open for Leadership Beyond the Theory. S1 Ep 2Building a High Performing Team: Weak team = poor results
EEpisode #2 // If you want to be successful as a senior leader, you first have to build a team of successful individuals. A key part of this is recognising when someone is not going to be successful in their current role, and freeing them up to be successful in another organisation. From there, it’s all about culture and team dynamics. So many people say that they have built a 'high performing team' - but how many high performing teams have you actually seen, or been part of?In this episode we’ll cover:What is a high performing team, and how can you recognise if you have one?World class wisdom from champion athlete Benita WillisThe seven characteristics of high performing teams (you can download this checklist below and rate your own team)How to look at the individuals in your team and work out whether they should be on, or off the bus (a la Jim Collins!)Some of the excuses and rationalisations you may come up with to avoid dealing with individuals who are not up to scratch, that are preventing you from creating a high performing teamA cautionary tale about how tough it was to create a high performing team at CS EnergyIf this episode strikes a chord with you, download the high performing team checklist below, and rate your team honestly. S1 Ep 1Respect Before Popularity: Letting go of the need to be liked
EEpisode #1 // Needing to be liked is a symptom of a deeper issue - conflict aversion. This affects everything you do as a leader. How would you know if you, or your people, had a problem with this? Overcoming it is key to any successful leader’s career. On today’s show, we’re looking at why letting go of the need to be liked is critical for your success as a leader. I love talking about this, because it's so closely tied to one of my favourite career killers; the inability to handle conflict. In this episode we'll cover:The mantra you HAVE to use if you're going to help yourself move from likeable leader, to respected leaderWhy wanting to be liked cannot be the goal of a leaderWhy developing yourself to handle conflict is essential to your leadership successHow to recognise the symptoms of conflict aversion in yourself and others (it's much easier to see in others, but what about when you turn the microscope on yourself!)My key strategies for getting over the need to be likedMy daily reflection discipline that will enable you to put the theory into action (you should definitely download these key questions at www.yourceomentor.com/episode1 to keep yourself on track)I’d love to know how you go using the daily reflections discipline, and whether this has struck a chord with you in your leadership journey.Head over to my LinkedIn page and send me a message.
