Jason Foley (1-0) earned his first career win with a scoreless inning in relief of starter Matt Manning, who was activated off the 60-day injured list before the game after missing three months with right shoulder inflammation. Jose Miranda had three RBIs for the Twins, who maintained their one-game lead in the AL Central over Cleveland. Miranda hit a tying, two-run single in the eighth. He added an RBI single in the 10th before Urshela’s big hit. Tigers starter Tarik Skubal was pulled following five scoreless innings with left arm fatigue. Royals 2, White Sox 1 – Perez, Merrifield homer, Royals edge White Sox 2-1 Salvador Perez and Whit Merrifield hit solo home runs, Daniel Lynch took a shutout into the sixth inning in his return from the injured list and the Kansas City Royals edged the Chicago White Sox 2-1 for their second straight win. Perez launched a monster blast for the second straight game and his third homer in four contests after missing 31 games with a left thumb injury and surgery. Merrifield’s drive into the left-field bullpen off Michael Kopech in the sixth might have been his last with Kansas City. A two-time All Star in seven seasons with the Royals, the second baseman has been the subject of trade rumors heading into Tuesday’s deadline. Tim Anderson and Andrew Vaughn each had two hits off Lynch, but the White Sox slipped back to .500 (51-51). He has struggled for the out-of-contention Tigers with a .205 batting average, 13 doubles, two home runs and 23 RBIs in 83 games. The switch-hitter has started 43 games in left field and 31 games in right. Grossman set career highs in 2021 in his Tigers debut with 23 home runs and 156 games. MLB – White Sox acquire lefty reliever Diekman from Red Sox The Chicago White Sox have acquired left-handed reliever Jake Diekman from the Boston Red Sox for catcher Reese McGuire and a player to be named or cash. The WNBA star and two-time Olympic gold medalist is to return to court on Tuesday. That is a month after the beginning of the trial in which she could face 10 years in prison if convicted. As the trial has progressed, the Biden administration has faced rising calls for action to win her release. In an extraordinary move, Secretary of State Antony Blinken last week spoke to his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, urging him to accept a deal under which Griner and Paul Whelan, an American imprisoned in Russia on an espionage conviction, would go free. NFL – Browns QB Watson suspended 6 games, NFL weighs appeal Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson was suspended for six games after being accused by two dozen women in Texas of sexual misconduct during massage treatments, in what a disciplinary officer said was behavior “more egregious than any before reviewed by the NFL.” The punishment handed out by the game’s disciplinary officer, former federal judge Sue L. Robinson, fell well short of what the NFL had asked for: an open-ended suspension of at least a year for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. Watson, who played for four seasons with Houston before being traded to Cleveland in March, recently settled 23 of 24 lawsuits filed by women alleging sexual harassment and assault during the treatments in 2020 and 2021. NFL – Watson discipline didn’t require legal charges Deshaun Watson and the Cleveland Browns found out the severity of the quarterback’s punishment when he was suspended for six games for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. Reyes’ gives Tigers 4-3 walk off win over Padres – Thursday Morning Sports Update
MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Detroit Tigers 4, San Diego Padres 3 Colorado Rockies 6, Chicago White Sox 5 Cubs were off Tigers 4, Padres 3 – Reyes’ 2-out, 2-run double in 9th rallies Tigers over Padres Victor Reyes hit a two-out, two-run double in the ninth inning to rally the Detroit Tigers over the San Diego Padres 4-3. The Padres led 3-2 going into the ninth and brought on closer Taylor Rogers, who gave up a one-run lead in the ninth on Tuesday night in a game San Diego eventually won in the 10th. This time, Jeimer Canderlario led off with a double before Rogers retired the next two batters. Jonathan Schoop followed with a dribbler down the third-base line for a single that put runners at the corners. Reyes then hit a drive over the head of right fielder Nomar Mazara to win it. Mazara got close to the wall chasing the ball and let the carom bounce past him as both runners scored easily. Rockies 6, White Sox 5 – Díaz, Rockies rally off Graveman in 9th, stun White Sox 6-5 Elias Díaz hit a two-run single off Kendall Graveman in the ninth inning, and the Colorado Rockies overcame the loss of starting pitcher Antonio Senzatela to beat the Chicago White Sox 6-5. Senzatela, making his second start since returning from a shoulder injury, led 3-2 in the seventh when Leury García hit a comebacker off the pitcher’s left shin that rolled away for a single. After Lucas Gilbreath blew the lead, Graveman walked Colorado’s first three batters in the ninth. Robert Stephenson pitched a perfect ninth. Today Detroit (Alexander 2-3) at Toronto (Kikuchi 3-5), 7:07 p.m. WSJM/WCSY 6:45 Chicago Cubs (Steele 4-6) at San Francisco (Wood 6-8), 9:45 p.m. White Sox are off NFL – Lions optimistic going into second season under Campbell The Detroit Lions are optimistic that the needs they addressed in the offseason will make the second year under coach Dan Campbell much better than the first in 2021 when they won just three games. In the offseason, the Lions made a conscious effort to improve their passing game. By signing wide receiver DJ Chark in free agency and using the 12th overall pick in the draft on Alabama wideout Jameson Williams — who starts camp on the non-football injury list — Detroit is hoping to stretch defenses. Defensively, the Lions drafted Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchison with the second overall pick and re-signed Charles Harris after a 7 1/2-sack season in an effort to improve a pass rush that ranked 30th in sacks. NFL – Quinn says he’s on board as rebuilding Bears begin practices Chicago Bears defensive end Robert Quinn joined the rest of the team on the practice field for the first time under new coach Matt Eberflus after missing all offseason voluntary and mandatory work. Quinn says he doesn’t expect or want to be traded, as the rumors suggested all offseason. This doesn’t mean the Bears are without controversy at the start of training camp. Linebacker Roquan Smith wants a new contract and was placed on the physically unable to perform list. Smith was at practice, just not taking part. Eberflus doesn’t want to reveal the injury that landed Smith on the PUP list, assuming there is one. Smith was at all the offseason practices and did not have an injury then. NFL – NFL finance group supports Broncos sale to Walmart heir The NFL finance committee is unanimously recommending the league owners approve the proposed $4.65 billion sale of the Denver Broncos to the heir of the Walmart fortune. Team owners will gather Aug. 9 to vote on the sale. Twenty-four yes votes are needed among the 32 teams to approve the sale which is the largest for a sports team anywhere in the world. The ownership group led by former Walmart chairman Rob Walton won the bidding for the team that’s been run by the Pat Bowlen Trust for several years. NCAAFB – Big Ten – Old-guy quarterbacks could give Big Ten different look Sean Clifford and Tanner Morgan first met on a seventh-grade football field. They’re final matchup could come Oct. 22 when Minnesota visits Penn State. They may be the two oldest quarterbacks in the Big Ten. The 24-year-old Clifford and 23-year-old Morgan are still trying to lead Penn State and Minnesota to division titles. But they are part of a growing trend among conference teams. At least nine conference schools are expected to open the season with the same quarterbacks that finished last season. NCAAFB – C-USA’s state of transition: 6 of 11 schools in final year Conference USA is in a state of transition, with six of its 11 football teams going into their last seasons in the league. Western Kentucky coach Tyson Helton was a freshman quarterback when Houston won the first C-USA football title in 1996. He’s now going into his fourth season with the Hilltoppers, who are one of five teams that will be staying. He says the conference has recreated itself many times and become stronger every time.
