Rinker Buck; With Respect 08/28/2022

John’s guest this week is Rinker Buck, author of The Oregon Trail. When a great idea joins a fascinating person, magic occurs. Rinker Buck was raised to love adventure, and has the scars to prove it. The Oregon Trail, that route of thousands of miles chiseled out of the Old American Midwest and West, was the original Lincoln Highway, a few ruts in the land from Missouri to Oregon, which pioneers of all types used and lived and died on. They talk over the mule-drawn wagon trip he and his brother made over that “road”, following their tracks.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Flick Pick – Orphan: First Kill (2022)

Flick Pick is a podcast about movies. In today’s episode, Andrew Green reviews Orphan: First Kill. It’s a new movie in theaters. Orphan: First Kill is a prequel to Orphan, a 2009 horror film. The first movie is about an orphan from Estonia who is adopted by an American family. The big twist at the end is that the psychotic little Esther is, in fact, NOT an orphan or even a little girl. She’s a 33-year-old woman with a hormonal disorder that makes her look like a child. Now, in Orphan: First Kill, we learn more about Esther’s origins. In this new movie, Esther infiltrates another family. They also got the same actress to play Esther as they did for the 2009 film, and they use digital de-aging techniques to have her reprise the role here. Just for the heck of it, Andrew reviews Orphan: First Kill in this episode, but also reviews the original Orphan, which he loves. So, did Andrew enjoy this Orphan prequel, or did he wish Esther had been left in 2009? Scroll down and click the Play icon to find out by listening to this exciting edition of Flick Pick! Rodriguez made an immediate impression on the coaching staff back in May. Linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard called Rodriguez one of the smartest young players he’s ever been around. Rodriguez’s star has only risen since. Though he started training camp with the second and third-team defenses, by last week’s joint practices with the Indianapolis Colts, the majority of his reps were coming with the starters. NFL – Bears guard Teven Jenkins looks to secure starting role Teven Jenkins has gone from left tackle to right tackle backup to rumors that he’s being traded. Now he’s playing right guard for the Chicago Bears with hopes of securing a starting spot. The Bears face the Browns this weekend in Cleveland in their preseason finale. Jenkins says he still can’t be sure if he’ll be traded, though it will be the second straight start for the team’s 2021 second-round draft pick. The Oklahoma State product has replaced veteran Michael Schofield at right guard. Jenkins, quarterback Justin Fields and starters will play a half in Saturday’s game. NCAAFB – College Football – Week 1 – Big Ten Saturday Nebraska vs. Northwestern, 12:30 p.m. at Dublin Ireland Wyoming at Illinois, 4:00 p.m. NCAA – Supreme Court paved way for shifting college TV landscape The Big Ten sent shockwaves in late June with the additions of Southern California and UCLA in 2024. That led to last week’s announcement of a seven-year rights deal with Fox, NBC and CBS that will see the conference receiving at least $1 billion a year. In 2020, the SEC sold the second package of football and basketball to the Walt Disney Company, making ESPN/ABC the home of SEC Football. The 10-year deal, starting in 2024, is worth at least $3 billion and is an addition to the original 20-year, $2.25-billion agreement that began in 2014. The increased revenues led to the additions of Texas and Oklahoma in 2025. NHL – Long-term victims of car crashes win key Michigan decision The Michigan appeals court has issued a major ruling affecting long-term victims of car crashes. The court says changes in auto insurance law can’t be applied retroactively to people who were severely injured before summer 2019. It’s a victory for people who are still recovering and their care providers. For decades, people injured in crashes were entitled to payment for “all reasonable charges” related to care and rehabilitation. But the new law sets a fee schedule and a cap on reimbursements not covered by Medicare. It had sudden, drastic consequences for people needing long-term care for crashes before June 11, 2019, and the providers of those services. Greene hits longest home run against Ohtani in Tigers win over Angels – WSJM Morning Sports

MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Detroit Tigers 4, Los Angeles Angels 0 Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Guardians, PPD Milwaukee Brewers 5, Chicago Cubs 2 Tigers 4, Angels 0 – Rodriguez returns, helps Tigers to 4-0 win over Angels Eduardo Rodriguez pitched five shutout innings in his return to the Tigers, helping Detroit to a 4-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels. The Tigers’ Riley Greene had a 448-foot homer on the first pitch he saw from Angels starter Shohei Ohtani. It was the longest home run Ohtani has allowed in the majors. Ohtani left the game with a stomach virus after four innings. Rodriguez hadn’t pitched in the majors since suffering a rib-cage injury on May 18. White Sox at Guardians, PPD – White Sox-Guardians rained out, makeup game on Sept. 15 The AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox had their game postponed due to unplayable field conditions caused by early morning rain. No precipitation fell for more than three hours before the game was called following a delay of 2 hours, 56 minutes. Play never began as the groundskeepers kept the tarp on the infield from Saturday night. The game has been rescheduled for Sept. 15, a mutual off-day, at Progressive Field. It was the Guardians’ 12th postponement this season, 10 of them at home. Cleveland has played an MLB-high 10 doubleheaders. Four of Chicago’s five postponements in 2022 have been against Cleveland. Brewers 5, Cubs 2 – Keston Hiura homers twice as Brewers beat Cubs 5-2 Keston Hiura homered twice and drove in three runs, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 5-2 to salvage the finale of their weekend series. Rowdy Tellez also connected and Willy Adames hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly for Milwaukee, which had dropped three of four. The Brewers blew three one-run leads during a 6-5 loss to the Cubs in 11 innings on Saturday. Chicago wasted a stellar performance by Justin Steele, who struck out nine in six scoreless innings. Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki homered, but the Cubs finished with just five hits. Chicago had won five in a row and nine of 12 overall. Today Chicago White Sox (Kopech 4-9) at Kansas City (Lynch 4-8), 2:10 p.m. St. Louis (Montgomery 6-3) at Chicago Cubs (Smyly 5-6), 8:05 p.m. Tigers are off MLB – Plate discipline: MLB umps crack down on blocking home A few close plays at the plate over the past couple weeks have infuriated MLB catchers. Cleveland’s Austin Hedges and San Diego’s Austin Nola tagged out runners at the plate, only to have the calls reversed after video review when umpires decided both catchers blocked the plate. It’s a difficult play for catchers, who aren’t allowed to block the plate without possession of the ball. It’s also a difficult play for umpires, who have to make a judgment call that’s got plenty of grey area. NFL – National Football League – Preseason Week 2 Thursday Chicago Bears 27, Seattle Seahawks 11 Saturday Detroit Lions 27, Indianapolis Colts 26 Lions 27, Colts 26 – Igwebuike’s late TD, 2-point stop lead Lions past Indy 27-26 Godwin Igwebuike’s tiebreaking 2-yard run with 4:03 left led the Detroit Lions to a 27-26 victory at Indianapolis. The Colts could have won it with a 2-point conversion but Jack Coan’s pass fell incomplete with 38 seconds left. Detroit quarterbacks David Blough and Tim Boyle split the snaps as Jared Goff took the day off following two joint practices against the Colts earlier this week. Blough and Boyle each threw a TD pass. Coan, an undrafted rookie, closed it out with the 26-yard scoring pass to Samson Nacua but couldn’t convert on Indy’s final play. Tonight Atlanta Falcons at New York Jets, 8:00 p.m. Golf – PGA – Patrick Cantlay wins another thriller at BMW Championship Patrick Cantlay is a winner again at the BMW Championship in another thriller. The only difference this year is he won’t be going to the Tour Championship as the No. 1 seed with a two-shot head start. No matter. Cantlay took advantage of a great break on the 17th hole when his tee shot bounced over a bunker and into the fairway. That set up a short birdie and a one-shot lead. He made par on the last for a one-shot win over Scott Stallings. Masters champion Scottie Scheffler tied for third and moves back to the No. 1 seed. Golf – Tom Weiskopf, major champion and golf course architect, dies Major champion and golf course architect Tom Weiskopf has died of pancreatic cancer.
