Astros improve to 6-0 against Detroit – Wednesday Morning Sports Update

MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Houston Astros 6, Detroit Tigers 3 Chicago Cubs 4, New York Mets 1 Chicago White Sox 4, Colorado Rockies 2 Astros 6, Tigers 3 – Astros’ Brown hurls 6 strong innings to beat hometown Tigers Rookie Hunter Brown pitched six strong innings in his hometown and the Houston Astros beat the Detroit Tigers 6-3 on Tuesday. Yordan Alvarez homered and scored three times for the Astros, who are 6-0 against the Tigers this season. Brown allowed two runs. Brown made his second career start in front of a loud group of friends and family. He grew up in suburban Detroit and attended Wayne State, about a mile from Comerica Park. Ryan Pressly struck out the side in the ninth for his 27th save. Tigers starter Drew Hutchison allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings. White Sox 4, Rockies 2 – Jiménez, Abreu homer as surging White Sox beat Rockies 4-2 Eloy Jiménez hit a three-run homer and Miguel Cairo directed the Chicago White Sox to another victory, topping the Colorado Rockies 4-2. Michael Kopech pitched five effective innings as Chicago remained three games back of AL Central-leading Cleveland, which rallied for a 3-1 win against the Los Angeles Angels. José Abreu also went deep, and Liam Hendriks handled the ninth for his 33rd save. The White Sox improved to 10-4 since Cairo moved from bench coach to acting manager after Tony La Russa stepped away to deal with a heart issue. Cubs 4, Mets 1 – Mets come up empty for deGrom and lose to Cubs again, 4-1 Jacob deGrom was outpitched by journeyman Adrian Sampson, and the frustrated New York Mets mustered little offense again in a 4-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Ian Happ homered deep into the second deck on a 99 mph heater from deGrom, and No. 9 batter David Bote added his second home run of the season for the Cubs, who won the series opener 5-2 on Monday. One night later, the scuffling Mets squandered another potential chance to increase their slim NL East lead over Atlanta, which played later in San Francisco. New York is 5-6 in a 16-game stretch against Washington, Pittsburgh, Miami and Chicago — all four of those teams are more than 20 games under .500 this season. Pete Alonso homered late for the Mets. Today Houston (Javier 8-9) at Detroit (Wentz 1-1), 1:10 p.m. WSJM/WCSY 12:50 Colorado (Freeland 8-9) at Chicago White Sox (Cease 14-6), 2:10 p.m. Chicago Cubs (Smyly 6-8) at N.Y. Mets (Peterson 7-4), 7:10 p.m. MLB – Still no timetable for La Russa’s return to White Sox dugout The White Sox say manager Tony La Russa will watch the team’s home series against Colorado from a suite while he awaits clearance to return to the dugout. The 77-year-old La Russa is on the mend after leaving the White Sox on Aug. 30 to deal with a heart issue. La Russa rejoined the team in Oakland on Sunday and then flew home with the club for the two-game set against the Rockies. There is no timetable for the Hall of Famer when it comes to returning to the stress of in-game managing. Chicago begins a four-game trip on Thursday in Cleveland. NFL – Preseason rest led to Week 1 rust for several top QBs Preseason rest appeared to lead to a little bit of rust in Week 1 for several of the NFL’s top quarterbacks. More than one-third of the league’s Week 1 starting quarterbacks didn’t play a single snap in the preseason and most of those 11 QBs didn’t play anywhere close to their usual form. Whether the poor results were a result of rust or other factors isn’t clear but the poor results are. The only QBs to rest the entire preseason and end up on the winning side in Week 1 were Minnesota’s Kirk Cousins, Justin Herbert of the Chargers and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson. NFL – Amazon Prime ready to kick off ‘Thursday Night Football’ Thursday night’s game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs on Prime Video kicks off an 11-year agreement between Amazon and the NFL and marks the first time the league has sold a package of games to a streaming service. Amazon won the rights to the prime-time package last March. It was originally supposed to begin in 2023, along with the rest of the league’s broadcasting contracts, but two months later it was announced that Amazon would take over the Thursday night package from Fox a year earlier. WNBA – WNBA Playoffs – WNBA Finals (best of 5) Last Night Las Vegas Aces 85, Connecticut Sun 71 (LV leads 2-0) Aces 85, Sun 71 – Aces beat Sun 85-71, take 2-0 series lead in WNBA Finals A’ja Wilson had 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Las Vegas Aces to an 85-71 victory over the Connecticut Sun in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals. The Aces are now one victory away from the franchise’s first championship with Game 3 on Thursday in Connecticut. Las Vegas was swept in the 2008 Finals when the team was still in San Antonio. The Aces were also swept in 2020. Chelsea Gray added 21 for the Aces while Kelsey Plum rebounded from an awful Game 1 to score 20 points. Court

Tigers blanked again for club record 21st time – Tuesday Morning Sports Update

MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Houston Astros 7, Detroit Tigers 0 Chicago Cubs 5, New York Mets 2 White Sox were off Astros 7, Tigers 0 – Valdez pitches 1st shutout, Astros blank Tigers 7-0 Framber Valdez pitched his first career shutout and the Houston Astros beat the Detroit Tigers 7-0. Valdez posted his 24th straight quality start, tying Jacob DeGrom in 2018 for the longest single-season streak. He gave up six hits and struck out eight with one walk. The Tigers were shut out for the second day in a row and club-record 21st time this season, tying them with the 1973 New York Yankees and 1976 Chicago White Sox for most by a team with a designated hitter. Jeremy Pena had three hits for the Astros and scored twice. Cubs 5, Mets 2 – Cubs hound Bassitt, beat NL East-leading Mets 5-2 Chris Bassitt had his shortest start in three months, failing to get through the fourth inning as the NL East-leading New York Mets lost to the Chicago Cubs 5-2. The Mets had won each of Bassitt’s last eight starts, a span in which he had a 2.24 ERA. But the right-hander gave up five runs in 3 2/3 innings — his quickest exit since he lasted a season-low 3 1/3 innings against San Diego on July 8. Rafael Ortega and Zach McKinstry homered for the Cubs. The Mets stranded 10 runners — including seven over the first six innings against rookie Javier Assad, who allowed five hits in earning the first victory of his career. Tonight Houston (Brown 1-0) at Detroit (Hutchison 2-7), 6:40 p.m. WSJM/WCSY 6:20 Chicago Cubs (Sampson 1-5) at N.Y. Mets (deGrom 5-1), 7:10 p.m. Colorado (Kuhl 6-8) at Chicago White Sox (Kopech 4-9), 8:10 p.m. NFL – National Football League – Week 1 Yesterday Seattle Seahawks 17, Denver Broncos 16 Seahawks 17, Broncos 16 – Seahawks survive Wilson’s return, edge Broncos on missed FG Geno Smith threw two first-half touchdown passes, Denver fumbled twice at the 1-yard line in the second half, and the Seahawks beat the Broncos 17-16 in Russell Wilson’s return to Seattle. Brandon McManus missed a 64-yard field goal attempt with 20 seconds left and the Seahawks escaped with another wild victory involving Wilson at quarterback. Except this time Wilson was the opponent and there will be plenty of questions about Denver coach Nathaniel Hackett’s late-game clock management and decisions in his first game. Denver faced fourth-and-5 at the Seattle 46 and had three timeouts left, but the Broncos ran significant time off the clock before Hackett called timeout and decided to have McManus try the long field goal. NCAAFB – Notre Dame QB Buchner expected to miss season with injury Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner is expected to miss the rest of the regular season with an injury to his nonthrowing shoulder that will need surgery. Fighting Irish coach Marcus Freeman says Buchner has a severe AC joint sprain in his left shoulder. Buchner was injured in the fourth quarter of Notre Dame’s surprising loss to Marshall on Saturday. Drew Pyne, who came off the bench after Buchner was hurt, was listed as the starter on Notre Dame’s depth chart of Saturday’s home game against California. NCAAFB – Narduzzi mum on status of injured Pitt QBs Slovis, Patti No. 23 Pittsburgh is dealing with uncertainty at quarterback as the Panthers prepare for a road trip to Western Michigan. Starter Kedon Slovis left last week’s overtime loss to Tennessee with an undisclosed injury. Backup Nick Patti injured his left leg early in the fourth quarter but had limited mobility. Head coach Pat Narduzzi offered no update on the status of either quarterback. Dartmouth transfer Derek Kyler and redshirt freshman Nate Yarnell have been competing to be third on the depth chart behind Slovis and Patti. WNBA – WNBA Playoffs – WNBA Finals (best of 5) Tonight Connecticut Sun at Las Vegas Aces, 9:00 p.m. (LV leads 1-0) WNBA – Sun beaming with confidence despite loss to Aces in Game 1 The Connecticut Sun might be down one game in the WNBA Finals after losing their first series opener of the postseason, but they haven’t lost confidence thanks to a stringent defensive effort in Game 1. The Sun did what they hoped to do in by holding the league’s No. 1 offense well below their season average. The top-seeded Las Vegas Aces averaged a league-best 90.4 points per game during the regular season and were scoring a playoff-best 92.3 per contest heading into the finals. Sunday, the Sun held Las Vegas to its lowest point total of the postseason in the 67-64 loss. Tennis – Carlos Alcaraz: 19, US Open champ, No. 1, unique Carlos Alcaraz is the U.S. Open champion and the No. 1-ranked player in men’s tennis at age 19. And he is exhausted. He tells The Associated Press on Monday that he is not quite sure how he managed to play and win so many tough and long matches in a row to earn his first Grand Slam title. He also says he considers himself a unique player who can hit a lot of different shots and never gives up on a ball.

Brown had a career-high-tying 155 yards receiving in his Philadelphia debut, helping the Eagles hold on for a 38-35 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday. The Eagles scored 24 points in the second quarter and had a 17-point lead in the fourth that was cut to three when Jared Goff threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to DJ Chark with 3:51 left. Philadelphia sealed the win with Miles Sanders’ 24-yard run on third down and Hurts’ sneak that converted a fourth down on the final possession. Tigers hit 4 home runs in 5-4 win over Angels – Thursday Morning Sports Update

MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Detroit Tigers 5, Los Angeles Angels 4 Chicago White Sox 9, Seattle Mariners 6 Cincinnati Reds 7, Chicago Cubs 1 Tigers 5, Angels 4 – Ohtani, Trout homer again, but Tigers rally past Angels 5-4 Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout homered in the same game for the eighth time this season during the Los Angeles Angels’ 5-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers. Rookies Kerry Carpenter and Ryan Kreidler hit back-to-back homers in the ninth inning for Detroit off Jose Quijada. Eric Haase went 5 for 5 with a homer and two doubles in the majors’ 12th five-hit game of the season, and former No. 1 overall draft pick Spencer Torkelson hit his first homer since July 3. Trout homered in the fifth and Ohtani homered in the seventh, but the Angels’ bullpen blew the win. White Sox 9, Mariners 6 – White Sox take advantage of Mariners’ miscues for 9-6 win Eloy Jiménez drove in three runs with a homer and double, Chicago took advantage of three errors, and the White Sox rallied to beat the Seattle Mariners 9-6. The White Sox took two of three in the series and stayed on the heels of Cleveland and Minnesota in the crowded AL Central race. It looked early like it would be a series loss for the White Sox as Seattle starter Luis Castillo tied an American League record by striking out the first seven batters to start the game. But Castillo gave up Jiménez’s homer and couldn’t get through the sixth inning. Reds 7, Cubs 1 – Aquino hits 2 home runs, Reds beat Cubs 7-1 Aristides Aquino hit two more home runs against the Cubs and helped the Cincinnati Reds pull away from Chicago 7-1. Mike Minor, pitching at Wrigley Field for the first time since 2014 with Atlanta, gave up 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings but just one run. The 34-year-old lefty is 3-0 in his last four starts after losing a career-worst eight straight decisions. The Cubs hit into three double plays and lost for the fourth time in five games. Aquino has hit 12 homers in 84 career at-bats against the Cubs. Today Cincinnati (Cessa 3-2) at Chicago Cubs (Sampson 1-5), 2:20 p.m. Chicago White Sox (Cease 13-6) at Oakland (Sears 5-1), 9:40 p.m. Tigers are off MLB – Major League Baseball Players Association joins AFL-CIO The Major League Baseball Players Association is joining the AFL-CIO. Executive director Tony Clark made the announcement alongside AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler at the National Press Club in Washington. The move comes as the MLBPA is attempting to unionize minor leaguers and in the aftermath of a nearly 100-day lockout that delayed the start of the season. Shuler called it an incredible moment for the labor movement. Clark says baseball players want to strengthen their organization by supporting minor leaguers and becoming part of the AFL-CIO. NFL – National Football League – Week 1 Tonight Buffalo Bills at Los Angeles Rams, 8:20 p.m. NFL – Fields hopes offseason work leads to jump for him, Bears Quarterback Justin Fields is embracing his leadership role with the Chicago Bears. And he hopes the work he and his teammates put in during the offseason leads to a big payoff for a team that struggled last season. The Bears host San Francisco in the season opener this week and all eyes will be on Fields. He comes into his second season trying to convince new general manager Ryan Poles and first-year coach Matt Eberflus he is the right person to solidify a position that has haunted the team for a big part of their history. A strong showing against a dominant defense that helped lead San Francisco to the NFC championship game last season would be a good way to start. NFL – Soldier Field gets new grass for Bears’ opener against 49ers The Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers will be playing on new turf when they open the season at Soldier Field. Bermuda grass was installed this week at the lakefront stadium instead of the stadium’s traditional Kentucky bluegrass. The Bears hope that leads to fewer issues with a surface that has long been a source of frustration for their own players and coaches as well as opponents. Coach Matt Eberflus had input in the switch and welcomes the change. WNBA – WNBA Playoffs – WNBA Semifinals (best of 5) Tonight Connecticut Sun at Chicago Sky, 8:00 p.m. (Series tied 2-2) WNBA – A’ja Wilson earns WNBA MVP honors for 2nd time A’ja Wilson has earned WNBA MVP honors for the second time in her young career. The 26-year-old Las Vegas Aces forward received 31 of 56 first-place votes from a media panel.
