Concussions again top issue in the NFL after Tua injured on Thursday Night – WSJM Morning Sports
NFL – National Football League – Week 4 Last Night Cincinnati Bengals 27, Miami Dolphins 15 Bengals 27, Dolphins 15 – Bengals top Miami 27-15 after injured Tagovailoa carted off Joe Burrow tossed a late 2-yard touchdown pass to Hayden Hurst to seal a 27-15 win for the Cincinnati Bengals over Miami. The game was marred by the horrific sight of Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa being taken off on a stretcher. Tagovailoa was chased down and slammed to the turf by Cincinnati’s Josh Tupou with about six minutes left in the first half. He was taken to a hospital with reported head and neck injuries. Vonn Bell’s interception of backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater with three minutes left in the game set up the Bengals’ final drive. Sunday Seattle Seahawks at Detroit Lions, 1:00 p.m. Rock 107 WIRX 12:00 Chicago Bears at New York Giants, 1:00 p.m. Tennessee Titans at Indianapolis Colts, 1:00 p.m. NFL – Lions host Seahawks in matchup of teams aiming for .500 mark The Detroit Lions and Seattle Mariners are matching up Sunday and the winner will be .500 again this season. Seattle’s Rashaad Penny had a career-high 170 yards rushing and two touchdowns in a 51-29 Week 17 win last year against the Lions. Detroit running back Jamaal Williams is expected to play a larger role with D’Andre Swift slowed by ankle and shoulder injuries. The Lions are favored to beat Seattle by 4 1/2 points, the most points they have been favored by since being a six-point favorite in 2019 against the New York Giants. NFL – Bears’ defense refocuses on tackling to stop Giants’ Barkley After struggling initially with tackling, the Chicago Bears’ run defense surfaced in the second half of Sunday’s 23-20 win over Houston and is now looking to continue the success against Saquon Barkley and the New York Giants. The Bears had given up 203 rushing yards to Green Bay and struggled in the first half against Houston before holding the Texans to 22 rushing yards in the second half. Safety Eddie Jackson called stopping Barkley a challenge for the Bears defense, which has sometimes had four rookies on the field this season. Iowa has won five of its last six home games against top-five opponents. That includes a 14-13 victory over Harbaugh’s second-ranked Wolverines in 2016. The game is a sellout. The game matches a Michigan offense scoring 50 points per game and an Iowa defense allowing fewer than six. NCAAFB – Struggling Spartans try to get back on track at Maryland Maryland is coming off its first loss of the season, but it was a credible performance in a seven-point defeat at Michigan. The Terrapins have three of their next four games at home and can really earn some legitimacy with a good October. They host Michigan State on Saturday. The Spartans are coming off consecutive losses to Washington and Minnesota. They could use a win this week or a disappointing season will start to feel inevitable. The 30-year-old slugger drove a 94.5 mph belt-high sinker with a full-count from Tim Mayza over the left-field fence at Rogers Centre. The 117.4 mph drive took just 3.8 seconds to land 394 feet from the plate. and it put the Yankees ahead 5-3. Maris’ mark stood until McGwire hit 70 in 1998, and that was topped by Barry Bonds’ 73 in 2001. McGwire admitted using steroids, while Bonds and Sosa maintained they didn’t knowingly use PEDs. Osborn blew by former Vikings cornerback Mike Hughes on a corner route to snag the in-stride pass and cruise across the goal line to give Minnesota the lead for the first time. The Vikings then didn’t let Jared Goff and the Lions cross midfield. Dalvin Cook rushed for 96 yards and a score before leaving with a shoulder injury for the Vikings, who fell behind 14-0 and 24-14. Bears 23, Texans 20 – Smith INT sets up game-ending FG as Bears beat Texans 23-20 Roquan Smith set up Cairo Santos’ game-ending field goal when he intercepted Davis Mills deep in Houston territory, and the Chicago Bears beat former coach Lovie Smith and the Texans 23-20. Khalil Herbert ran for a career-high 157 yards and two touchdowns. The Texans had third-and-1 at their 26 when defensive tackle Angelo Blackson tipped a pass intended for Rex Burkhead. Smith, who missed practice all week because of a hip injury, intercepted it at the 30 and returned it to the 12. Chicago had Herbert run, then downed the ball twice before Santos nailed a 30-yarder as time expired. Colts 20, Chiefs 17 – Ryan drives Colts to 1st win with 20-17 comeback vs Chiefs Matt Ryan threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to rookie Jelani Woods with 24 seconds left to give the Indianapolis Colts a 20-17 comeback victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Ryan earned his first win with the Colts in their home opener by throwing for two scores, both to Woods. Indy sealed it with a late interception — Patrick Mahomes’ first of the season as the Chiefs fell to 2-1. Mahomes lost for only the third time in September despite leading almost the entire second half. Ryan won it with a brilliant 16-play, 76-yard drive that was aided by a personal foul call on Chris Jones following a third-down sack.
