Verlander reunites with former Tiger Scherzer in New York – WSJM Morning Sports

MLB – AP source: Verlander agrees to 2-year contract with Mets A person familiar with the negotiations says Justin Verlander has agreed to an $86.7 million, two-year contract with the New York Mets. The deal reunites the AL Cy Young Award winner with Max Scherzer and gives the Mets a high-profile replacement for Jacob deGrom. The deal includes a vesting third-year option, according to a person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because there was no announcement. Verlander leaves World Series champion Houston to step in for deGrom, who agreed to a $185 million, five-year contract with Texas last week. It also puts Verlander on the same team as Scherzer after they played together with the Tigers from 2010-14. Verlander turns 40 in February. MLB – Judge looms; Verlander, Turner deals heat up winter meetings Justin Verlander is going to the New York Mets. Trea Turner has agreed to a blockbuster deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. Baseball’s first winter meetings since 2019 kicked into high gear when Verlander agreed to an $86.7 million, two-year deal with New York, and Turner joined Philadelphia for a $300 million, 11-year contract. Clayton Kershaw also returned to the Los Angeles Dodgers on a $20 million, one-year deal. The biggest outstanding question at the end of an impactful day at a downtown San Diego hotel centered on the status of MVP Aaron Judge, who remains a free agent after setting the AL home run record and powering the Yankees to a division title. NFL – National Football League – Week 13 Yesterday Tampa Bay Buccaneers 17, New Orleans Saints 16 Buccaneers 17, Saints 16 – Brady throws for 2 late TDs, Buccaneers beat Saints 17-16 Tom Brady threw a pair of touchdown passes in the final three minutes Monday night, helping the Tampa Bay Buccaneers rally from a 13-point deficit to beat the New Orleans Saints 17-16 and tighten their grip on first place in the weak NFC South. The seven-time Super Bowl champion tossed a one-yard TD pass to rookie Cade Otton, finishing a 91-yard drive to pull within 16-10 with exactly three minutes remaining. He got the ball back with 2:29 to go, then won it with a 6-yard throw to another rookie, Rachaad White, with three seconds left. NFL – Packers GM, coach want Rodgers back next season A day after Aaron Rodgers said returning for a 19th season with the Green Bay Packers will require a “mutual desire on both sides”, his general manager agreed with the franchise quarterback. “Surely, yeah,” GM Brian Gutekunst said on Monday, a day after a 28-19 victory at the Chicago Bears moved the Packers to 5-8. Even with 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love waiting in the wings, the Packers want Rodgers back. Coach Matt LaFleur also said on Monday “absolutely” he’d want Rodgers back for 2023. Indiana played without starting point guard Tyrese Haliburton for a second straight game as he nurses soreness in his left groin. Klay Thompson scored 28 points and made eight 3-pointers on the six-year anniversary of his 60-point masterpiece against the Pacers. Stephen Curry was held to 12 points on 3-for-17 shooting. Upton Reflects On Time In Congress

Congressman Fred Upton is in his final month in Washington as he prepares to retire at the end of the current term. The St. Joseph Republican tells us he’ll be busy through the end, although his offices are now closed. Reflecting on 36 years in the U.S. House, Upton counts the 2016 21st Century Cures legislation as his top accomplishment. That bill boosted funding for medical research and drug development. “Whether it’s fighting cancer, getting the vaccine approved for COVID, diseases like sickle cell, Alzheimer’s, all of that, coupled with more money for health research so we can find these cures,” Upton said. Locally, Upton says protecting the Great Lakes and completing US-31 are high on his list of accomplishments. He says he’s always followed the example of Ronald Reagan, seeking to govern above all else as he believes that’s what people want. “I look at our district. Most people aren’t registered as Republicans or Democrats, let’s face it. They don’t care if you necessarily have an R or a D next to your name. They just want the job done, and that’s what the next Congress is going to have to do.” Upton says with a divided Congress about to begin, members will have to compromise. He tells us if they don’t work together, nothing will get done. He notes the election this November was the first in decades he got to sit out. “I actually thought about going out on November 8 a couple of weeks ago with a big sign that said, ‘Thank you.'” Until the end of his term, he says he’ll be working on keeping the government functioning, averting a rail strike, and maintaining defense spending. Upton doesn’t know what he’ll do next, but says he’ll remain in St. Joseph. Listen to our full conversation with Congressman Fred Upton below:See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Huizenga Ready To Represent Fourth District

Congressman Bill Huizenga is ready to get to work representing southwest Michigan in Washington once the new term of Congress starts in January. He was just elected to represent the Fourth District, which covers northern Berrien County and points north up to Holland, plus east to Kalamazoo and Battle Creek. Huizenga tells us his old Second District was nearly turned upside down in redistricting, but some things haven’t changed with the new Fourth. “It’s a very diverse, different district on one hand, yet at the same time, there are a lot of similarities,” Huizenga said. “It’s still a manufacturing district. It’s still a district that is very dependent on ag and ag processing, for example. And, as we all know, anyone who lives along the lakeshore, we are an economy that is dependent on the recreational dollar.” Huizenga says he’s familiar with Great Lakes issues as the Republican co-chair of the Great Lakes Task Force. He’s worked on concerns like PFAs and coastal erosion. Another issue he’s worked on is the federal debt. “I’ve helped create a bipartisan group that we informally call the 30 by 30 Group. Originally, it started out as 30 Republicans and 30 Democrats getting together and trying to figure out what we’re going to do and how we’re going to handle this massive, massive debt.” Huizenga comes from a family of business owners, and owns a gravel company himself. He worked in real estate before entering politics and was elected to the Michigan Legislature in 2003 before he was elected to Congress in 2010. Huizenga says he’s been travelling around the new Fourth District, getting acquainted with those he’ll be representing. A new concern for him is the grape industry. He says he’ll be visible and open to any concerns residents have when the new Congress opens January 3. Upton Entering Final Month In Washington

Congressman Fred Upton is heading into his final month in Washington as he prepares to retire at the end of the current term.

Campbell was second in the Big Ten with 118 tackles and intercepted two passes as the anchor of the Hawkeyes’ defense. Campbell was the league’s leading tackler in 2021. NCAAFB – Mike Sainristil’s switch to CB at Michigan proves to be wise Mike Sainristil wanted to have the ball in his hands to make plays at receiver when he chose to attend Michigan. Sainristil got his wish, scoring touchdowns in each of his first three seasons. But coach Jim Harbaugh asked Sainristil last spring to switch to cornerback, and it has proved to be a win-win move. The second-ranked Wolverines will likely line up Sainristil at times against standout receiver Charlie Jones on Saturday night when Michigan faces Purdue in the conference championship game in Indianapolis. Huizenga Ready To Get To Work Representing Southwest Michigan
