Happy Holidays! In today's episode, I sit down with Joshua Noel and TJ Blackwell of The Whole Church Podcast, and Elizabeth Clyde of The Clyde's to discuss the top ten most popular holidays in the US. Ep 140"Full Court Miracle" Review!
Happy Hanukkah! As a way to bring you all into the Hanukkah festivities, I am sitting down with my brother Bradley to review the Disney Channel Original Movie, Full Court Miracle. Along with reviewing the film and sharing our favorite scenes and lines, we discuss how there is a general lack of Hanukkah content this time of the year, and who we would want to direct a serious Maccabees film. We also share why Hanukkah matters to us and how celebrating this holiday has grown us spiritually. Ep 139Dialoguing with Claire about the Gospel
What is the Gospel? That is the big question my wife Claire and I dialogue over in the finale to this series. We discuss the tiered system approach to theology and how it is possible that the Gospel should be the only item in that category. We dialogue about how the Gospel is simple and yet a very big reality, what heaven will be like, and the importance of pronouns! Claire also runs down her three favorite Christmas films and we get into it a bit over which Home Alone is better. Ep 138Dialoguing with Josh over Hard Questions
As humans, our understanding of God and life eventually runs out. We cannot fathom God completely and every possible reason for why life is going the way that it is. In this episode, I sit down with Joshua Noel of The Whole Church Podcast to dialogue over hard questions that every human wrestles with and may never arrive at a conclusion. Why God does allow suffering? Why does God seem so severe in the Old Testament but so loving in the New Testament? How can we simply explain the Trinity? All this and more in this dialogue. Ep 136Dialoguing with Joe about Creation
During the Dialogue series, I am sitting down with a different guest in each episode to dialogue about a different area of theology. In today's episode, I sit down with the host of BuddyWalk with Jesus, Kingdom on the Road, and Shell Shock, Joe Dea to dialogue about Creation. In this dialogue, we answer the questions is the creation account in Genesis literal, why are there two creation accounts, and should we take the early parts of Genesis seriously? We also dialogue about where we would put our theology of Creation at in a Three Tier system. Ep 135Dialoguing with Christian about the Old Testament
We are ending 2023 with a series called Dialogues. In each episode, I will sit down with a different guest to dialogue about a different theological topic. In this episode, I sit down with host of Let Nothing Move You Christian Ashley to dialogue about the Old Testament and our relationship with it as Christians. We look to answer important questions like do we need the Old Testament, what value is there in books like Leviticus, and are all the promises of the Old Testament for us today? Ep 134Of Monsters and Luther (Part 1)
It is finally here! Welcome to our first ever Halloween/Reformation Day special. In this episode, I and Joshua Noel of The Whole Church Podcast sit down first to discuss the history and practices of Satanism, then on the second half of the episode we discuss some of Martin Luther's teachings on Satan. Josh shares his story of visiting a Satanic Temple and I talk about my skepticism of stories of demonic involvement and why I want to become a demonologist. Ep 133Demonology Revisited
This episode is a rebroadcast. Just in time for the Spooky Season! In this episode I explore what Scripture actually has to say about demons and Satan from a Conservative Evangelical viewpoint. I also run down what possession actually would have been like in the New Testament and how much of our understanding of the dark side of the supernatural comes from pop culture rather than Scripture. https://myseminarylife983333216.wordpress.com/?preview_id=3&preview_nonce=2d22b29479Shop: https://my-seminary-life-store.creator-spring.com/Buy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/mslpodYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@MySeminaryLifeFacebook & Instagram: @myseminarylifepodContact: [email protected]

This episode is brought to you by the letter deltaIn the finale to the study on Ancient Greece, I sit down to talk about how Greece was an early form of American government in how they ushered in democracy. I talk about how the government systems worked in Athens and Sparta and their similarities to our current government, and I give my opinion on how we can be Christians in America without being Christian Nationalists. In this episode, I also give some of my own thoughts on the current war in the Middle East as well. Ep 131You Should Read Aesop Fables
Producer Cooper stops into the studio to have a discussion on Aesop Fables, these ancient short stories that teach moral lessons. In the episode I discuss why Aesop Fables should still be a part of rearing children, how not all Fables are appropriate for today's audience, and I compare the Fables to the Parables of Jesus. Plus, i talk about my favorite Fable from the collection. This episode is brought to you by the letter omicronIn this edition of the Ancient Greece study, I am joined by Christian Humanist Joe Scibbe to discuss the impact that Homer's Iliad and the Odyssey could have on believers. We also have a long discussion on what it means to be a Humanist and how being a Christian influences that pursuit of answering the question, what does it mean to be human? Ep 129Review of "300"
This episode is brought to you by the letter theta THIS IS MSL! In this episode in the Ancient Greece series, I sit down with a returning Christian Ashley of Systematic Geekology and the Let Nothing Move You podcast to discuss the iconic 2006 film "300." We also go back to the source material of the same name written by the great comic book artist and writer Frank Miller, and we dialogue about the original historical evidence for the Battle of Thermopylae. In this wide ranging discussion we talk about the popularity of the Spartans today, the historical inaccuracies within the film and graphic novel plus the issue of ancient historians writing their own propaganda into their accounts. From slavery to hyper masculinity, to the What If scenario of Persia winning the war over Greece, we cover it all in today's episode. I am joined by Pastor Will Rose of Systematic Geekology and Christian Ashley of SG and the Let Nothing Move You podcast to discuss the fun, nerdy, and very inaccurate film adaption of the myth of Perseus. We also discuss the importance of stories, how Paul engaged the Greek Mythology in Acts 17, and what we as Christians need to do today as we engage with the rise of Neo-Paganism and Hellenism. This episode is brought to you by the letter etaIn this episode on Ancient Greece, I sit down to discuss The Big Three philosophers from classical Greece, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, I take a look at the basics of what they taught, and how their views brought them close to understanding who our God is. I also explain how classical philosophers viewed the use of philosophy as a tool to seek truth, and I modernize Plato's famous The Cave metaphor. Ep 126Should Ancient Greece Matter to Modern Christians?
This episode is brought to you by the letter alphaShould ancient Greece matter to modern Christians? What does Athens have to do with Jerusalem? These are questions that believers have been wrestling with throughout church history. In today's episode as we kick off our new series Ancient Greece, I run down three reasons why I think listeners should stick around for this series and how it will help them grow in their faith and in the understanding of our own modern culture. Ep 125Review of "Bonhoeffer: Agent of Grace"
In the finale to the Summer of Bonhoeffer, I sit down to review the film "Bonhoeffer: Agent of Grace." This film from 2000 depicts the last six years of Bonhoeffer's life, specifically his imprisonment. In this episode, I walk through my favorite portions of the film, highlighting some of the historical and questionable moments of the film. I talk about Bonhoeffer's relationship with his fiancé Maria and her life after the war. I also give some of my thoughts on cancel culture and why we need heroes. Ep 124Bonhoeffer on What it Means to Tell the Truth
What does it mean to tell the truth? Why is it that a child is required of their parents to always tell them the truth about everything, and yet so many parents willingly lie about things like Santa Claus? Is it healthy to overshare every detail of our lives on social media? In this episode, I wrestle with one of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's unfinished essays on telling the truth and how it is more nuanced then being open and honest with everyone we come into contact with in life. Ep 123Bonhoeffer on the Sanctity of Human Life
Did you know that at one point in time we as Protestants did not have a clear ethical stance on the sanctity of human life? Seems pretty impossible given the current climate, but not that long ago, Bonhoeffer set out in his book Ethics to formulate a clear ethical stance on the subject. In this episode I boil down some of Bonhoeffer's thoughts on this topic and explore the idea of living in a Protestant world with no clear sanctity of human life ethic. Ep 122Bonhoeffer on Prayer and the Psalms
The Summer of Bonhoeffer resumes with a partial look at "Prayer Book of the Bible" by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. In this episode, I break down the general premise of the book as we learn how to pray by speaking the Word of God, specifically the Psalms back to God. I also wrestle with some of the implications of this approach to prayer, like what do we do with songs and prayers written by man or even AI? How far can we take reading Jesus into the Old Testament before it gets anti-Judaism and therefore antisemitic? Ep 121Diverse Theology: Frequently Assumed Things about Other Denominations
Coming to you live from the Every Tribe, Denomination, and Tongues Convention, it's My Seminary Life! In this special live recording episode of the show, I am joined by a whole host of people to discuss things that are often assumed about denominations from people outside of that particular group. Instead of FAQs, we're talking about FATs, Frequently Assumed Things. Do Pentecostals really believe that you have to speak in tongues to show you have been filled with the Spirit? Is a church that is LGBTQ+ affirming compromised? Do you have to vote Republican to be a Christian? Plus, I try Cheerwine for the first time live on air! This is a jam packed episode filled with a lot of laughs and insight into different Christian theologies. Ep 120Reviewing "Life Together" by Dietrich Bonhoeffer
In this edition of the Summer of Bonhoeffer, I sit down to review one of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's most beloved books, "Life Together." This book, which spawned out of Bonhoeffer's experience with being the head of a small, illegal seminary in Nazi Germany, covers his reflections on what it means to live in Christian community together. From defining what community is and is not, to what a day together looks life, to alone time, and the importance of service and confession, Bonhoeffer molds a view of community that is not often popular in our modern context. Ep 119Bonhoeffer and Lewis on Being a Student During Times of Change
In this episode of the Summer of Bonhoeffer, I am joined by friend of the show Joshua Noel, host of The Whole Church Podcast, Systematic Geekology, and Dummy for Theology, to discuss what Dietrich Bonhoeffer and CS Lewis, both prominent theologians during World War II had to say to their respective students about pursing their studies during times of change. Ep 118Bonhoeffer Responds to the Aryan Paragraph
Things are taking a dark turn in Germany in 1933. The Aryan Paragraph has been passed, removing those of non-Aryan descent from civil roles, and now churches are beginning to pass religious versions removing non-Aryan believers from churches and pastorates. In this episode, I discuss Bonhoeffer's response to this religious version of the Aryan Paragraph, and how partiality based on race or anything else divides wedges into the church that were never meant to exist. I also give some of my thoughts on how we as believers can continue to learn how to better love our neighbor who is different from us. Ep 117Bonhoeffer Writes a Catechism
What's a catechism? Today on the Summer of Bonhoeffer, we go back to the summer of 1931 to look at a draft of a 39 question catechism Bonhoeffer and his friend Hildebrandt were working on for the Lutheran church at the time. In this series of questions and answers, we get a look into what was on the mind of Bonhoeffer for his people at that time, along with a couple surprising answers to a few of the questions. We also get a clear look at what Bonhoeffer thinks the true church is. Ep 116Bonhoeffer on Theology and Preaching
What is theology? That is a question that we've actually asked a few times here on the show. Today, we get Bonhoeffer's take on the subject and how that should affect how we live. We also get Bonhoeffer's perspective on another topic we've covered on here a number of times, preaching. All that, plus I give my take on what Christians should be posting during Pride Month and I ramble about my anxiety problems for a bit. Ep 115Bonhoeffer's Appeal for Sympathy, Love, and Peace
The Summer of Bonhoeffer continues with a look a speech that Bonhoeffer delivered frequently during his time here in the US. Bonhoeffer is appealing to Americans for sympathy towards their German brothers and sisters in the faith. This episode contains honest reflections of how Bonhoeffer's words about relying on our own strength is still true today along with many other takes on social justice and church unity. This episode also brings back the popular Verse of the Day and My Life segments, along with a brand new segment called Culturally Relevant where I discuss something that is going on in the US right now; in this case, a few thoughts on The Secret of Hillsong and Shiny Happy People documentaries. Ep 114Why Study Dietrich Bonhoeffer?
Welcome to the Summer of Bonhoeffer! All throughout the summer we will be diving into the writings of the famous Lutheran German minister during the 30s and 40s, Dietrich Bonhoeffer. In today's episode, I am joined by Lutheran Parish Pastor Will Rose to discuss why we need to continue to study the life and theology of this man. We breakdown some of Bonhoeffer's best works and some of the works on his life, and we discuss how both of us have been influenced by his teachings. In this episode, I am joined once again by my brother Bradley to discuss one of our all time favorite summer movies, Recess School's Out. Ep 111Apologetics for Teens
As we draw Apologetics 101 to a close, I sit down with Pastor Scott Erwin of Bethel Church in Hobart, IN, to discuss how to navigate the topic of apologetics with teens. The landscape of apologetics has shifted since we were teens. In this conversation, Scott discusses what topics were most important to the youth group students to discuss and how they went about navigating the waters. What we find is that apologetics has taken a more personal approach. Ep 110What's a Cult?
ESometimes we like to through the word "cult" around to describe anything that we think may be toxic or misleading in their teachings. However, the word "cult" does mean something specific so it is important that we understand what a cult is. In today's episode, I run down five key characteristics of a cult with examples from the history of cults. I also wrestle with what to do if you meet someone who is a part of a cult and the difficulties that may present to share the gospel with them. From NXIVM to Heaven's Gate, from Branch Davidians to Jonestown, and many groups in between, cults have made a huge impact on the world of religion. Ep 109A Couple World Religions
There are a lot of world religions out there. As Christians, we need to better understand their history and beliefs so that way we can talk to people with tact and intelligently rather than bashing them with a Bible. Here I give the run down on Jehovah Witnesses and the complicated history of the Adventists. Ep 108Three Apologist You Should Know
There are many people who have contributed to the subject of apologetics. In this episode, I highlight three of the biggest contributors: St. Thomas Aquinas, Augustine, and CS Lewis. I talk about their life, their contributions to the field, and what their ministry should influence us to do. I give some of my thoughts on these men's biggest works like Summa Theologica, City of God, and Mere Christianity. At the end of the episode, I highlight two resources I've been interacting with recently, Mama Bear Apologetics and Answers in Genesis. Ep 106Does God Exist?
The existence of God is one of the big discussion questions in the world of apologetics. How can we know that there is a God out there? In this episode, I break down the three main arguments that are used to prove the existence of God. From creation to the intricacies of creation to our moral compasses, there are ways to argue for the existence of God without having to resort to Scripture. I also highlight the book I am using as my primary source of studying for this series, and I give a quick review on The Keller Center for Cultural Apologetics from The Gospel Coalition. Ep 7Fish Frydays: Anticipating Sorrow
This is it, the finale to Fish Frydays. Over the past few weeks we have been walking through the Lent season to better understand its history, what Scripture has to say on fasting, and how this is not just a Catholic church thing. When you compare Lent to the other seasons of the church calendar, it is strikingly different as it anticipates a season of sorrow. What does that sorrow look like for those who observe Lent? Are we to anticipate sorrow outside of Lent, and what does that look like for people who are called to be hopeful, content, peaceful, and joyful? I discuss all of this as we end this series together! Ep 99Social Justice and the Church
Time to talk about one of the biggest ongoing topics within the church, social justice. What place, if any, does social justice, Critical Race Theory, and being Woke have in the church? What role does justice play in the active life of a believer? In this episode, I begin a very introductory conversation that points out many of our flaws in how we think about these topics.
