Ep 190ReOrientation through Comfort

Welcome back to My Seminary Life. Today is a special presentation of the show called ReOrientation. Orientation is a special day where new students are given a preview of what their new academic life will be like. Here on ReOrientation, we put aside the intelectualism and the ranting and raving to focus on Jesus, His Kingdom, the gospel, and the Word by stripping the show down and just talking about Scripture for a while. Today's focus will be on 2 Corinthians 1:3-7 as I discuss comfort. Contact: [email protected]: https://www.youtube.com/@MySeminaryLife

Ep 189Rabbit Trail: Ethical Thankfulness

Is there an ethical way to be thankful? Welcome back to My Seminary Life. In today's Rabbit Trail, I recap my thankfulness sermons from November and ask the big question, can thankfulness continue to be thankfulness if you get something out of it? After recapping my sermons on Luke 18:9-14 and Psalm 138, I work it out defending the idea that having hope restored in your current situation is an ethical way that thankfulness can play out. I also introduce my purpose for thankfulness; Thankfulness is not a weapon of pride to knock others down, but a tool of humility to build other up, bring glory to God, and restore hope to our current situtions. Ep 185Silent Night & Oh Holy Night

Welcome back to My Seminary Life. In today's episode we are wrapping up Hymns of Christmas as we complete our journey through the birth of Jesus guided by our favorite Christmas hymns. Today's guides are Silent Night & Oh Holy Night. After recapping and taking a brief look at Isaiah 9:6, I talk about this important aspect to the good news of Christmas that Jesus is the Prince of Peace, the peace to whom God has given to those He has given His grace, the peace that Micah prophesized about. What does it look like to live at peace because Jesus is peace? How does the imagry of Silent Night and the social justice message of Oh Holy Night play a part in us understanding what it means to be at peace? Also, I look at the war and poverty surrounding one of these hymns, and the Unitarians are at it again with our second Christmas hymn today. Bonus, I wrap this whole series up in a nice little bow by quoting part of Dr. Maya Angelou's poem Amazing Peace. Welcome back to My Seminary Life. Our journey through the birth of Jesus guided by our favorite Christmas hymns continues on with the most well known section on the birth of Jesus, when the angels appear to the shepherds. Ep 182Oh Little Town of Bethlehem & Once, In Royal David's City

Welcome back to My Seminary Life. Today in our journey through the birth of Jesus, our guide is Oh Little Town of Bethlehem & Once, in Royal David's City as we reflect on hymns of arrival. Last week on Hymns of Christmas, we looked at Micah 5:2-6, this week we jump some 800 years later to Luke 2:1-7 to see the fulfillment of Micah's prophecy that the eternal ruler would be born in Bethlehem. The arrival of the Messiah shows us that God is not restricted by our limited understand of our circumstances. When life gets chaotic and stressful, we are reminded that God can bring His purposes together. Ep 181Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel & Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus

Let's talk Hymns of Longing. Welcome back to My Seminary Life. In today's episode, I introduce our new series Hymns of Christmas; we will be journeying through the birth of Jesus guided by our favorite Christmas hymns. Today, we start with Israel's longing for the Messiah, which began all the way back in the Garden. I walk through Micah 5:2-6 to show a prophecy that Israel could hold on to during God's silence during Greece and Rome's occupation. Israel longed for a Serpent Crusher Messiah who would save them from captivity, and the hymns Oh Come Oh Come Emmanuel and Come Thou Long Expected Jesus capture that longing that Israel had. Ep 180Experiential Preaching: Pie and Praise Fellowship

What is Experiential Preaching? What's a Pie and Praise Fellowship? Welcome back to My Seminary Life. In today's episode, I explain what my concept of Experiential Preaching is, how it is different from manufacturing an emotional response or doing a big stunt in the name of being memorable, and I think it could help in moving us away from a consumer driven church service. I then walk through the concept of a Pie and Priase Fellowship, followed by summarizing my lesson on Psalm 117. and how the experiential element landed with the congregation. Ep 176Rabbit Trail: Sometimes, Christians Can be so Annoying!

How do you stir up another believer to love and good works when they are freaking annoying! This week on the show we have another Rabbit Trail. After reviewing my recent sermon on Hebrews 10:19-25, I sit down to answer the question, "how do I stir up someone to love and good works when they are so freaking annoying?" We all have "that person" in our lives that can be difficult to love, and social media wasn't a thing when this epistle was written. Also, how do I do all this while also setting healthy boundaries? In this episode, I reflect on all of that and walk away with a few takeaways. Ep 175Rabbit Trail: Why Do We Gender Verses?

Welcome back to My Seminary Life. In today's Rabbit Trail, I recap my recent sermon on Joshua 1:1-9, look at its relationship to helping us transition in leadership, and ask the question, "why do we gender verses?" Down this rabbit trail, I look at a couple passages that we specifically assign to men or women, I rant about how it's just culturally influenced, lazy hermeneutics, and ask the additional question, "when did we start doing this?"Facebook & Instagram: @myseminarylifepodContact: [email protected] Me a Coffee: buymeacoffee.com/mslpodShop: https://my-seminary-life-store.creator-spring.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWwLsNvWR2C8rfrwaPve-ew

Ep 174Rabbit Trail: Why Fearing God Matters

Is there a right way to fear God? Welcome back to My Seminary Life, and the start of a new series called Rabbit Trail. In this series, I will take you down a path that I wanted to go down in a recent sermon I preached but couldn't make it fit in my notes. In my recent sermon on Hebrews 11:1-3, I mention how there is a proper way to fear God. Here in this episode, I take you down that path on why I think fearing God matters, how it can serve as a guardrail against being too casual in our faith, and you get to hear a lot from Producer Cooper. Ep 170Joshua Noel Thinks Hermeneutics Is Important

Welcome to day three of Camp My Seminary Life, campers! Today, we have a guest counselor here to speak to us about Heremeneutics. Joshau Noel, the host of Systematic Geekology, Dummy 4 Theology, and The Whole Church Podcast, has three reasons why he thinks Hermeneutics is important. Hermeneutics has played a role in his life story, feeds his quest for understanding why we believe what we believe, and...gives him lots of poop jokes? Ep 168What is Hermeneutics?

Welcome to camp! Camp My Seminary Life begins this week on the beautiful shores of Lake Tolien. This year for our first ever summer camp we are looking at the topic of Hermeneutics. This is an essential subject for both pastors and believers of all kinds. In this first episode, I address the question, "What is Hermeneutics?" In understanding the importance of studying Scripture in its context to interpret it, we also look at Hermeneutics' relationship with Homelitics, how one is an art while the other is a science, and how big and deep this topic can be as we dig deeper into the context of Scripture. Ep 165The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Mormons. We're talking about Mormons today. The Summer School series on Cults rolls on with Day 3 covering one of the most reconizable cults out there, what is commonly referred to as Mormons. In the episode, I walk through a brief history of the Mormon Church proper, talk a little bit about some of the differences between other smaller Mormon groups, and highlight some of the major teachings in the church that differ from Protestant Christianity. I also propose a an interesting question, "How long does a cult need to exist and how large does it need to be before it is no longer recognized as a cult but just as another religion?" I also take some time to reflect on the beauty that is simple, true Christianity. Ep 164World Mission Society Church of God

Who are the Witnesses of the WMC? As our Summer School series on Cults continues, I am once again joined by author Christian Ashley of the Let Nothing Move You podcast to discuss a time when he was approached by followers of Mother God. Christian and I discuss the complicated history of the Church of God in South Korea before it was relaunced into the WMC. We breakdown some of their teachings, including the belief that Jesus has already returned and gone back again, there is a Trinity and a Mother God, and the need to partake in Passover to be saved. We also seek to answer that very important question of "Will I ACTUALLY run into someone who is a part of this cult?" and the answer may surprise you, especially if you live in the Midwest. Ep 163UFO Cults

Welcome to Summer School! All this week we will be exploring the topic of cults and looking to answer the big question, "Could I really run into someone who is a part of a cult?" The answer may surprise you with this episode. For Day 1 of Summer School, we're looking at the genre of UFO Cults; cults that have extraterestrials worked into their doctrines. From setting up embasies on earth, to infamous Dooms Days cults, cults that include aliens in their teachings add an unique element to the conversation. Ep 159What is Christian Science?

Christian Science has been around for a while, but what is it exactly? In this week's episode, we explore the shared history between Mind Science and Christian Science as Apologetics 201 continues. We look at what makes Christian Science "Christian" and "Scientific" especially with how it understands the concept of atonement. I talk about the similarities Christian Science shares with Scientology and Gnosticism, and how it is unique from other forms of new religious movements. I also follow the red line and comment how Mind Science has infiltrated the business world and has become an idol in culture and among Christians is the form of Mindset Coaching. Ep 158Creation Theories

There's more than one way to interpret Genesis 1. As Apologetics 201 continues, I am joined by Joe Dea of Happy Dea Ministries and author Christian Ashley to discuss the six major creation views. In this episode, we breakdown Six Day Creationism, Evolution, Gap Theory, Day/Age Theory, and others in an attempt to help people understand that there is not just one path for Christians to follow when it comes to understanding Genesis 1. Is it possible that Genesis 1 is not concerned with giving us an exact timeline and process for how creation took place? You'll also hear how Christian dislikes the idea of a young earth created with age, Joe's dislike of the "plain reading of Scripture", and how Brandon smells like someone who would go to a Mega Church. Ep 157Is the Watchmaker Illustration A Strong Argument?

Who watches the Watchmaker? In this week's episode of Apologetics 201, we dive head first into the arguments for the existence of creation. Was it, as William Paley put it, an intelligent, benevolet God who like a Watchmaker put the mechanism together? Was it as Darwin purposed a series of changes over time left to chance? Was it as Alan Moore purposed in Watchmen of a Makerless Mechanism that God can create within? Was it as HP Lovecraft purposed with Cosmic Indifference that the mechanisms of the universe move with no god or Uncaused Cause putting them into motion and therefore the universe is a machine that doesn't care about you? Aslo, is there a better way to do apologetics then just trying to win arguments? Ep 156What is the Role of Faith, Reason, and the Holy Spirit in Apologetics?

With Christianity being a religion, faith plays a big part in our daily lives. From major beliefs within the Christian faith, like the virgin birth of Jesus to, to daily living, faith plays a crucial role. How does faith play a part in apologetics? As our Helper, what does the Holy Spirit do? How does reason play into the equation as we discuss things that are in the realm of the supernatural. Join me as I reject on my research this week digging into verses like Hebrews 11:1 and 1 Peter 3:15 for Scripture guidance. Ep 154The Three Year Anniversary Special!

Happy birthday My Seminary Life! In this year's birthday special, I sit down with Dr. Jonathan Roy of Trevecca Nazarene University to discuss his dissertation on the role shame has on counselors. It is understandable that those stepping into a counseling environment to receive help may feel some shame in their life, but what about those who are providing the help? What are the mental health professionals to do when they feel unqualified or inadequate to help a person? Dr. Roy walks us through his dissertation exploring those topics. He also gives us helpful definitions to understand the difference between shame, guilt, and humiliation, and why being self-aware is so crucial for a counselor. Ep 153It Can't Rain All the Time

What's in a name? In today's episode, we bring Celebrate March to a close with a look at my name. Yes, it is my birthday as well this month, and although I do not have the influence the rest of the people I highlighted this month have had, I still think there is an interesting origin behind my name. So strap in as I take you to the magical land of 1993 to discuss the films Dragon: The Story of Bruce Lee and the iconic 90s film The Crow. We also turn to the etymology of the name "Brandon" and see what Urban Dictionary has to say to understand the meaning behind my name. Ep 152The Clear is the Goal

Happy birthday L. Ron Hubbard! Who is your favorite sci-fi writer? As we Celebrate March, we now turn our attention to pulp fiction writer and creator of Scientology L. Ron Hubbard and his work "Dianectics." How does someone go from sci-fi writer to leader of a new religion? What is the science in Scientology? What is the aim of Scientology and Dianetics? In this episode, we cover all of that and I give some of my thoughts on pseudo-psychology within Christianity. Ep 149I Speak for the Trees

Happy birthday Dr. Seuss! What does it mean to speak for the trees? Today we are beginning our month long series Celebrate March where in each episode I will be sitting down to talk about someone who was born in the month of March who made an impact on faith, religion, pop culture, and in some cases all of the above. In this episode, my wife Claire joins the show to discuss the Illumination film The Lorax based on the book by Dr. Seuss. We discuss the impact Dr. Seuss continues to have on children's literature and entertainment. We give our honest thoughts on Illumination and their impact on children's entertainment. As we review the film, we get into the anti-capitalism, anti-industrialization, pro-environmental messages of the film and how we as Christians should respond to messages like that. Ep 148Your Favorite Hymns and Worship Songs

As Lead Them to Worship comes to an end, I sit down to make some observations from a recent survey. Over the past month I have been asking for you all to give me your favorite hymns and worship songs. In this episode, I go over this list and draw some interesting observations. What hymns made the list? Which ones did not? What was the all time most nominated song? Is it possible that worship music goes beyond a very specific genre? All this, plus I talk about some of the cringe songs I have sung in worship settings. Ep 147Should We Use AI for Ministry?

In this week's edition of Lead Them to Worship, I am joined once again by Joe Dea of BuddyWalk with Jesus to discuss the relationship between AI and ministry. We discuss the popular saying among many Christians that when it comes to tech we should embrace everything because "it's just a tool to share the gospel." Joe briefly recaps the history of AI and how it became a household tool so quickly. We then discuss studying and preaching as worship, and how AI can be used in sermon prep and writing music, but how easy it is to abuse this tool and to reduce the worship we give to God. Lastly, Joe teaches us what it means to be a "Trans-Humanist." Ep 146"Holy Roar" by Chris Tomlin Review

Lead Them to Worship continues with a look at "Holy Roar" by Chris Tomlin and Darren Whitehead. In this book, Tomlin and Whitehead break down the seven different words used in the Hebrew language for "praise" and how they affect how the Jewish people and Christians today worship. In this review, I am joined by my brother Bradley to discuss three of these words, and how they change the way we worship. Ep 145In Spirit and In Truth

This episode in the Lead Them to Worship series takes a close look at John 4:21-24. In this passage, Brandon recaps the story of Jesus speaking to the Samaritan woman at the well, and camps out in a popular portion where Jesus answers a question about worship. Has the worship wars tainted our thinking on this passage? Can worship take place beyond the walls of our churches and gathering spaces? Find out in this week's episode!
