Ep 367From Coder to Chief Technology Officer with Armon Dadgar, CTO of Hashicorp

“At the core of what HashiCorp does, almost everything is open source for us. And so in terms of traditional marketing, we do very little of it. It's very much driven around creating great products in open source as to make it broadly available to developers and users.” — Armon Dadgar Chad is joined by Armon Dadgar, co-founder and CTO of Hashicorp. As CTO of Hashicorp, Armon has spent a large amount of his time building the culture of the company by refining the process of hiring and investing in the future. As a leader, he knows his job is as much about building a great product as it is about building a great team. “The bulk of it was either alternating between writing code and hiring people to write more code. And now it's almost sort of the total opposite,” says Armon “I probably haven't written a line of code in two or three years... I spend a lot more time on the outbound side, a lot more time with the management team in terms of how we think about culture and process and hiring future investments.” From an early age, programming has been a key part of Armon’s life, and this hobby propelled him through the University of Washington and into the world of coding. He focused on open source programming, and this eventually led to him starting his own company, Hashicorp, with co-founder, Mithcell Hashimoto. On this episode, Armon discusses the differences between being a coder and the CTO, ways to keep up with the ever-changing, fast-paced world of IT, and how to find time for personal growth. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Ep 366Committing to a Growth Mindset with Jay Fulcher, CEO and Chairman of Zenefits

“Don't obsess about the fact that you don't always understand what the next step is.” — Jay Fulcher Today, Chad sits down with Jay Fulcher, CEO and chairman of Zenefits which offers cloud based software as a service for companies to better manage their human resources. Having learned the ropes of leadership by being a serial entrepreneur and CEO, he was brought on to lead Zenefits in 2017 after the company had suffered from internal issues and infamously grew too quickly. Jay decided to flip this situation upside down and created a brand new business model and leadership team. Zenefits to this day has become one of the fastest-growing SaaS companies in history and has created a value of 4.5 billion dollars in six years. “We’ve worked hard at building this very tightly integrated, interoperable platform, a single code base that a customer knows when they do business with Zenefits, all of the applications are going to look and behave the same way,” says Jay. “The employee experience is not going to be good, it's going to be phenomenal.” From being the CEO of Agile software to the CEO of OOyala, Jay has an extensive track record for bringing in great returns and driving growth in the companies he has served. Jay continues to serve as an advisor for other startups making their break into the tech industry. On this episode of Mission Daily, Jay shares the guiding principle he looks for in a company he chooses to be a part of, the importance of being committed to a growth mindset, and how to build a company that is resilient. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Ep 365Building Emerging Tech for the Fortune 1000 with John Arrow, CEO of Mutual Mobile

“People think that when you start a company that it is this immensely risky thing but the upside is so disproportionately higher if you just looked at it from an expected value standpoint. Worst case scenario your company fails and you go to work for a McKinsey or something similar.” — John Arrow Today, Chad is joined by John Arrow, CEO of Mutual Mobile, an agency that designs and develops breakthrough digital applications for the Fortune 1000. As a freshman at the University of Texas, John joined the aviation community and discovered his passion for flying. It was also within this program that he met four friends who would become the co-founders of Mutual Mobile. “One of my passions is flying airplanes where you're forced to multitask. There's no other way to do it. Even if you have the autopilot on, you have to be scanning the instruments or talking to the radio or planning what's ahead. I think you can do things better when you can spread out your attention because it avoids that burnout.” Starting Mutual Mobile has completely changed his life. John has emerged as one of the most promising young CEOs in the past decade, being named to Forbes list of Top 30 CEOs Under 30. Mutual Mobile was named by Forbes as one of America's most promising companies in 2011 and has since produced award-winning apps for Google, Audi, Cisco, and many more. On this episode, John discusses how to create a work environment primed for innovation and creativity, how to succeed within the app-building world, and his goals for the future of Mutual Mobile. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Clearbit is a marketing data engine that combines public and private data sources to allow companies to truly understand their customers and sales interactions. Ep 358Making the Impossible Possible Using Data with Amr Awadallah, Global CTO of Cloudera

Ep 357Solving Data Challenges at Mission Speed with Michele Bolos, CEO of NT Concepts

“I think an entrepreneurial spirit is within somebody.” — Michele Bolos Today, Chad is joined by Michele Bolos, founder and CEO of NT Concepts, a leading national security solution provider applying AI and machine learning to help strengthen the operations of government agencies such as the Department of Defense. Michele built the business by staying lean and cultivating an employee culture of innovation. Her company has lived through two recessions, the tech bust of 2000 and the national recession in 2008, as well as several government shutdowns. How did she do it? Michele would give most of the credit to her team but it was also due to the key financial decisions Michele made through the good times, constantly saving and keeping the company's focus on the customer. “We grew very quickly in a short amount of time, but I could see the bubble was going to burst. I could just feel it,” says Michele. “And so for the first seven years we did 100% private industry and then I decided to diversify into the government sector, which is not an easy nut to crack.” Prior to founding NT Concepts, Michele worked as an independent consultant for companies such as Mobil Oil, Talus Corporation, and API/WANG Global, where she led complex software engineering efforts for commercial and federal marketplaces. Michele was also a system engineer for Alfa-Laval Thermal. On this episode of Mission Daily, Michele talks about the genesis of NT Concepts, how she managed to carry her company through not one but two recessions and the importance of being a servant leader. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Ep 353Staying People-Focused with Tracy Edkins, Chief Human Resource Officer at Splunk

When Tracy Edkins joined Splunk four years ago there were just over 1,000 employees. Today, Splunk is hitting 5,000 employees and Tracy is right in the middle of this explosive growth as Chief Human Resource Officer at Splunk. At Splunk, values and culture are the two main drivers for all hiring decisions and it is what, Tracy believes, has made the company so successful. First, there is an emphasis on diversity inclusion, not just when it comes to gender and ethnicity but as it pertains to the whole person. Tracy asks, “how can we all bring all that we are, all of our different selves into the workplace and not feel like we have to have a life separate from who we are at work?’” The Million Data Points platform celebrates all that Splunk employees have to offer in addition to gender and ethnicity. From diversity inclusion to employee development, Tracy’s goal is to create trophy experiences for Splunk’s employees. “A trophy experience to me means that when you look back on your career, you were able to do something here that you are super proud of, you were able to try a new role, or you had a manager who leaned in and helped you to get into new swim lane.” On today’s episode, Chad and Tracy discuss what data points Splunk looks for in the hiring process, tips for how managers can better lead their teams, and how Tracy is creating trophy experiences for Splunk’s employees. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Liz’s career started out at Oracle and quickly ended up with the title of VP of Oracle University. While in her role, she was given a lot of responsibility, room to experiment and learn but also room to fail. At the time, it was intimidating and she was uncertain of herself but she explains the importance of always being challenged in your career. “I actually believe that when we are good at our jobs, I think that we begin to secretly resent our jobs,” says Liz. “But actually we are at our happiest when we have a job that's like a size too big. Now, I don’t recommend people go out and get a job that is two sizes too big. It’s like getting that fit right.” On this episode, Stephanie and Liz discuss her experience at Oracle and how it led to her work as an executive coach today, the difference between multipliers and diminishers within organizations, and how to stay ahead in your career in today’s fast-paced world. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Ep 349Transporting Aid Globally with Susy Schöneberg, Head of Flexport.org

“Don’t be afraid. Think about your personal experience and how you can leverage it.” — Susy Schöneberg Flexport is a digital freight forwarder that “helps companies to bring their goods from point A to point B, and helps companies to find their goods, and provide the technology and data to up their supply chain.” Susy Schöneberg is the Head of Flexport.org, which is “using Flexport’s expertise, technology, and infrastructure to help companies to achieve their social and environmental goals.” Susy didn’t think she would get into transportation as a young girl, in fact, she wanted to be an astrophysicist — no big deal. Susy was working in the transportation industry when she came across Ryan Petersen, the Founder and CEO of Flexport, at a speaking event. Afterward, she approached him and asked for a job. She knew she could bring her past experiences and skill sets to the job and was determined to be helpful where she could. After having worked at Flexport for a few years, Susy was back in front of Ryan with a proposal — but this time it was to start Flexport.org. “What is important to think about is what particular knowledge you might have that others don’t have,” says Susy. “I see a lot of tech companies that want to change the physical world but they might not be familiar with certain processes. So your background, although it might be from a different industry, could be super, super valuable to them.” Now she is the Head of Flexport.org, and in just the first few months the organization has delivered more than 1.6 million pounds for aid purposes. Susy is more excited than ever for what the future holds for Flexport.org and for the many lives is she helping to impact. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Ep 348The Future of Work Management with Chris Farinacci, COO of Asana

Collaboration at work is on the rise and so are work management tools to help team members manage progress. Chris Farinacci is the Chief Operating Officer at Asana where he is responsible for the company’s, now global, go to market strategy. Chris breaks down execution of this strategy into three parts: revenue, customer, and market. With over 70,000 paying customers and another three million free companies “that have activated since inception,” Chris has his hands full. “I always get asked, ‘what do you worry about?’ or ‘what keeps you up at night?’ It's the prioritization because there are so many opportunities for us and the sequencing of how we invest in those and when,” says Chris. “You can’t do it all at the same time. It's sort of the mapping of our core competencies and momentum to the product to market fit and the market opportunities.” In order to keep on track with their business goals, Chris explains that the team stays focused on the company's mission, “Eliminating work about work.” He wants team members to be focused on doing their work as opposed to spending time discussing where the work stands. On this episode, Stephanie and Chris discuss how the team at Asana is using their own project management tools and practices internally to scale the company globally, how and why collaboration tools are growing faster than ever, and some of the practices Chris uses to manage day-to-day operations within Asana. — We have a new partnership with b8ta! Ep 347Big Data, Data Lakes, and Blockchain with Rahul Pathak, Executive at Amazon Web Services

Everyone knows that data is exploding. What most people don’t realize is the pace and ways in which data is changing our everyday lives. According to Rahul Pathak, we’re seeing a “roughly 10x increase in data every 5 years, and the types of data that’s being generated is changing” as new devices are created every day. What does this data explosion mean for the future of business? And how is blockchain able to help with structuring and securing data? “So what you have is data volume exploding. You have the need for more control of data, but I think you also see customers realizing that data is a key strategic asset for their businesses. And so they need to be able to operate with data and use it to help them prove their businesses and drive competitive advantage while still complying with everything that's related to regulation and data protection,"says Rahul. On today’s episode, Ian is joined by Rahul Pathak, Executive and General Manager of all things big data, data lakes, and blockchain at Amazon Web Services. Rahul has been with AWS since 2011 and focuses on providing customers access to large scale databases and computing. Today, he is passionate about the use cases of blockchain and is working with customers to solve their business goals with this new technology. Ep 346Creating Stories that Matter with Sophia Bush

Sophia Bush is many things; an actress, activist, and avid reader. She hosts a new podcast called Work in Progress and is working on several soon-to-be-released films. She is an LA native and, as the daughter of two immigrant parents, understands the value of the American Dream and the value of the life she’s built for herself. But what many might not know is that Sophia is also a self-proclaimed “data science nerd” and narrator of our newest tech podcast, Hidden In Plain Sight. “There's been so much ballooning innovation in the space and because so many of us don't have the touchpoints to it that some of these bigger tech companies do, we've seen a lot of the negative usages of data mining and of data science happen in the world recently,” says Sophia. “It's incredibly important that we as a citizenry have more transparency into these systems. Because the inverse of something like a Cambridge Analytica is the incredible, life-changing, life-saving, humanity-bolstering tech that's being created right now." This behind-the-scenes episode of Mission Daily was recorded with Sophia right after she completed season one of Hidden In Plain Sight. Chad and Stephanie join her in-studio to discuss the show, what’s she’s been up to, and her tips for time management and self-care. Ep 345Preventing Cyber Attacks with John Davis, Federal Chief Security Officer of Palo Alto Networks

From Senior Military Cyber Advisor at the Pentagon to VP and Federal Chief Security Officer at Palo Alto Networks, John Davis is an experienced cyber security professional focused on educating the public on cyber threats and preventing the next national and international cyber attack. Palo Alto Networks is at the forefront of cyber security and uses the latest in tech such as artificial intelligence, analytics, automation, and orchestration to prevent cyber attacks on their integrated platform. John has had first-hand experience with cyber attacks from his time at the Pentagon. In 2008, John was in charge of directing operations and defense for the Department of Defense’s networks. While in the position, he was made aware of malicious code in one of their networks. As a response to the threat, John developed and implemented Operation Buckshot Yankee to find the code and identify whether any sensitive information had been hacked. As a response to his hard work and leadership, the U.S. Cyber Command was created in 2010 and John became its first director. “It was a near catastrophe for the military. And in my view, that was the event that was like the straw that broke the camel's back in the decision to create U.S. Cyber Command. As a result of a near catastrophe, senior leadership realized the consequence of the failed organizational structure and model that we had in 2008, and made the decision to bring together the people who operate the network, the people who defend the network, the intelligence that supports them as well as the ability to provide cyber capabilities to integrate offensively along with every other military capability, air, maritime land capabilities.” On today’s episode, Ian and John dive into John’s first hand experience with cyber security attacks, what to know about the current security landscape, and bits of advice and tools companies can use to improve their security. — We have a new partnership with b8ta! Ep 344The Digital Transformation of Ingka Group with Chief Technology Officer, Susan Standiford

You may think everything in IKEA is easy to piece together, but what you see in-store and online has taken years, even decades, of iteration to create. Unlike their mattress frames, IKEA’s technology takes more than just an Allen wrench to build. And leading it all is Susan Standiford. Susan grew up with an innate interest in technology. Her father was a historian and journalist and her mother was a physicist, scientist, and mathematician. Because Susan basically grew up in a computer lab, her interest in technology quickly took hold leading her into many important tech roles later in life. From VP of Technology at Disney Interactive to leading the tech team at Travelocity to her current role as Chief Technology Officer of Ingka Group, the strategic partner in the IKEA franchise system- Susan is one of today’s top technology leaders. In her day to day as CTO, Susan plans the company’s product and digital strategies and is working on moving the company into a new digital revolution. “For us, the digital transformation is not about turning IKEA into a technology company. We’re not changing our core values. We’re still trying to generate our mission which is to create a better everyday life for many people by bringing product to people wherever they are in their life. But how do you use digital capabilities and modern ways of thinking about tech to empower all those good things that are IKEA?” On this episode, Ian and Susan discuss how Susan first became interested in technology, what her work looks like as CTO of Ingka Group, and how the role of AR and VR is changing the way people shop. — P.S. Ep 343Transforming Health Insurance with Ali Diab, CEO of Collective Health

Ali Diab is the co-founder and CEO of Collective Health, a healthcare technology company that makes employee sponsored health insurance more transparent and simple to navigate. Ali was motivated to start Collective Health after his own medical event. As he was busy recovering from a life saving operation, Ali was served numerous health care bills with no clear understanding of what was owed and for what. He had great health insurance too but even still, the bills were high and not clear or transparent. On a mission to understand the healthcare system, Ali founded Collective Health. “You don't need to know bond math to understand your mortgage, so why do I need to understand every acronym and every medical term to understand my health benefit plan? You shouldn't, it should be plain English. I think that that's intentional. That's the way the industry keeps us out and keeps us from poking at the beehive.” On this episode, Ian and Ali discuss the problems within the healthcare industry, how technology is making a difference, and what Collective Health is doing to move the industry closer to transparency and simplicity. — P.S. Ep 341A Transformational Career with Tara-Nicholle Nelson, CEO of SoulTour

“We all are doing a hero's journey over and over and over and over again. Every time we seek to improve or change something about our lives or try to do something we've never done before it is a hero’s journey in itself.” — Tara-Nicholle Nelson Tara-Nicholle Nelson is a marketer and writer at heart, but before realizing her true passions, it was as a real estate agent that she started her first “customer insights project.” She wanted to help people make better decisions when buying homes, so she created a flow chart for making decisions. That flow chart led to her first book, The Transformational Consumer: Fuel a Lifelong Love Affair with Your Customers by Helping Them Get Healthier, Wealthier, and Wiser. The book didn’t sell a ton of copies, but one did manage to land in the hands of a founder at HGTV who wanted to license it. This turned into Tara becoming a digital content marketing consultant and PR spokesperson for HGTV. It was the beginning of an inspiring career journey for Tara, one focused on content marketing. Today, Tara is the founder and CEO of SoulTour and the CEO of Transformational Consumer Insights (TCI), a strategy and customer research firm. TCI builds customer loyalty and engagement with content strategies based on research and customer insights. Tara also serves as a transition coach to a select few transformational leaders at SoulTour, a company that provides programs to help leaders along their journey. Ep 340Closing the Gender Pay Gap with Meggie Palmer of PepTalkHer

Meggie Palmer is on a personal mission to close the gender pay gap. She founded PepTalkHer, an app that helps women recognize their value in the workplace and gives them the confidence to ask for a raise. Prior to becoming an entrepreneur, Meggie spent more than a decade working as a journalist for BBC World, CNBC, Discovery Channel, and others as a Foreign Correspondent & Director. She loved journalism but realized that it was not going to pay what she needed to retire comfortably. To help create those extra funds, she started a side hustle called Sliding Door Media, which offers media trainings to companies to better tell their story. Once Meggie was ready to fully make the leap and leave journalism, her side hustle was able to provide the support she needed to start PepTalkHer. Ep 339The Digital Transformation of a Print Enterprise, with Former Conde Nast CDO Fred Santarpia

You may have heard that print is dead. Or at least it’s dying. While those statements are not entirely true — there are still very successful print newspapers, magazines, and books out in the world — they do give a bit of insight into the world we’re currently living in that leans more digital every day. As such, there is a greater need to bring traditional enterprises like publishing houses and magazines into the digital world. That’s where Fred Santarpia enters the picture. Fred is the former Chief Digital Officer of Conde Nast, and his job was to transform brands like Vogue, The New Yorker, Wired, and GQ from strictly print offerings to digital powerhouses. When he came on board, he explains that building the digital and video side of the business meant he was literally starting from nothing: “We started from zero. That was a blank piece of paper when I got there. So that included everything from really charting the strategy, securing the funding to fund what was effectively a new division of the company, building the technology and the infrastructure to support our video production and distribution, securing the distribution deals, and the revenue operations infrastructure, and frankly, probably most importantly, attracting top digital talent into a company, which at the time was very much only known for its excellence in print. ...That startup kind of environment inside of the broader company really allowed us to build a very special culture and prove that digital success at Conde Nast was indeed possible.” On this episode, Fred explains to Ian the various trials and tribulations he had to go through at Conde Nast, the ins and outs of acquiring new digital properties, and what it means to be a Chief Digital Officer, a relatively new position in many media organizations. — P.S. Ep 338Women in Tech Roundtable Discussion

The tech world has historically been dominated by men. When you think of tech leaders, the mind almost immediately goes to people like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Elon Musk or Mark Zuckerberg. But women have been making a name for themselves in the tech world, too, and we gathered a few to share some insights on their journeys. Joining Mission co-founder Stephanie Postles and Mission producer Hilary Giorgi around the table was Alvina Antar, the CIO of Zuora, Julie Cullivan, the Chief People and Technology Officer of Forescout, and Praniti Lakhwara, CIO of Apttus. They each brought with them a wealth of knowledge and experience from decades in the world of IT, and their energy and drive to keep innovating was contagious. On this episode, each of the women shared how they wound up in the tech field, the methods they have used to successfully build teams and scale companies, and the importance of having the support of fellow women in the field. — P.S. Ep 337Defending Information Integrity with Renee DiResta, Mozilla Fellow

Renee DiResta is a Mozilla Fellow in Media, Misinformation, and Trust as well as Technical Research Manager at Stanford’s Internet Observatory. She spends her time at Stanford working on forensic analysis of misinformation campaigns, proactive detection, and policy analysis. Mozilla’s Fellowship program explores “internet health — from harassment to accessibility to privacy and security.” In her day-to-day, Renee analyzes design choices and platforms decisions to understand how they affect information integrity. Prior to her interest in misinformation campaigns, Renee received degrees in computer science and political science from Stony Brook University. Her first job outside of school was writing code for a financial trading company. However, she quickly realized she wanted to become a financial trader herself and went on to become an arbitrage trader for seven years before moving to Silicon Valley to work in venture capital at O'Reilly AlphaTech Ventures. After a few years in Silicon Valley, Renee was bit by the entrepreneurial bug and started her first company, Haven, which uses technology to streamline end-to-end shipment management for global companies. During this time, Renee had her first child and became interested in the anti-vaccination movement, causing her to get involved in advocacy online and begin researching misinformation campaigns. Ep 336How Coding Bootcamps are Breaking The Mold with Ruben Harris, CEO of Career Karma

"There's a difference between a job, a career, and a calling." — Ruben Harris Ruben Harris is the CEO of Career Karma, an online coding bootcamp designed to help people become software engineers and support them throughout their careers. Prior to founding Career Karma, Ruben worked across education, health care, politics, finance, and augmented reality — doing it all while documenting his experiences in blog posts. After receiving thousands of emails asking him for advice on how to break into tech, Ruben co-founded the Breaking Into Startups podcast. Eventually, this project sparked his desire to create a his own product, Career Karma, that prepares workers for the fourth industrial revolution. Coding bootcamps allow individuals to become programmers at a much faster pace than traditional computer science education. There are many coding bootcamps, but from teaching styles to acceptance paths, they are very different from each other. With the Career Karma app, users are matched with the bootcamp that fits their lifestyle and goals. There's also a networking component that helps the new software engineers connect with mentors and peers across the industry. Coding bootcamps may be the fundamental education in Career Karma, but technology is changing every field. Rubin recognizes this and is working to expand Career Karma’s offerings. "We decided to focus on software engineering first, the reason being that, people keep referring to the tech industry as separate from everything else. But, the tech industry is no longer an industry anymore. It's everything. If you're not tech-driven, you're either going to die or survive for a few years and adapt to the next thing and become tech-driven." On this episode, Ruben sits down with Stephanie to discuss the unique difference he's making for software engineers during their job hunt, lessons he’s learned over his career, and finding the right education that aligns with your career choice. — P.S. Ep 335Becoming Indistractable with Nir Eyal, Behavioral Designer and Author

“Whatever you do with your time, I want you to do it with intent. That's the goal here. It’s not about getting off of technology, it’s about using this stuff with intent.” Nir Eyal is a behavioral designer and bestselling author of Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products. Hooked identifies a four-step process (called the Hooked Model) that explains how to build habit-forming products. But as Nir began writing about, sharing, and consulting companies using the Hooked Model, he realized that these same tools were causing his own distraction. They took time away from the things and people he valued most. This realization prompted him to write his second and brand new book, Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life. In Indistractable, Nir addresses the root causes of distraction, honing in on what behaviorally makes us distracted in the first place. According to research, distraction is caused by external and internal triggers. “We have to face the fact that most distraction starts from within. But what the research reveals is that most distraction is a reaction to a negative emotion. If our behaviors are prompted by these internal triggers, these uncomfortable emotional states, then that means that time management is pain management.” In today’s fast-paced, tech-driven world, distractions live everywhere - from the pop-up ad online to the ping of your phone to the push notification on your computer. On this episode, Chad and Nir explain why we get distracted and identify tactics for how to overcome it. — P.S. Ep 333Digital Transformation in the NGO Sector; Part Two

On today’s episode, we continue our two-part philanthropy series and Ian is joined by a few new guests to continue diving into the topic of digital transformation in the NGO sector. As Lise af Ekenstam, Program Manager of Technology for Social Good Initiative at Avanade, points out, the constraints that nonprofits are faced with are critical and digital transformation is more important than ever. “Given the fact that, more often than not, nonprofits and their stakeholders see digital transformation as a luxury that they can potentially not afford, they are facing many challenges from slowing donations, to fewer resources, to fewer volunteers,” Lise says. ”We also know that nonprofits are sitting on mountains of data that they are struggling to unpack and to drive insights from. But while these are challenges, I think they are exactly why nonprofits need to invest in digital transformation.” Our roundtable guests join us to address the challenges of stakeholders adopting and funding digital transformation, opportunities to use AI and machine learning to solve bigger impact issues, and the solutions they are working toward together to bring innovation to the entire NGO industry. — P.S. Ep 330Optimism, Innovation, and Technology with with Bret Taylor, President & CPO of Salesforce

“There is an inherent optimism that Silicon Valley represents. Innovation is inherently interesting because it is changing the status quo and it's forcing you to reimagine what the world could be.”— Bret Taylor Bret Taylor has had a remarkable career as a tech entrepreneur. He founded FriendFeed, one of the first social networks, co-created Google Maps, served as the CTO of Facebook, and is currently the President and Chief Product Officer at Salesforce. On this episode, Bret takes us through his career from his first company as a teenager to his various businesses and subsequent acquisitions. Bret started off developing web pages for small businesses at the age of 16 before heading to Stanford where he would fall in love with the power of technology. “I saw the optimism of the technology industry as well as the excess of it. There was a lot of opportunity but after the dot com bubble, it was kind of refreshing because the people who remained were really devoted to the innovation and not just business opportunism.” Bret learned of Google’s Product Manager Program from Marissa Mayer, his friend from Stanford and fellow teachers' assistant, and took the opportunity to learn invaluable skills that would later come full circle in his current role. Now at Salesforce, Bret serves as President and Chief Product Officer where he’s introduced countless innovative ideas, including the companies’ Associate Product Management Program, similar to the one he participated in at Google years prior. Today, Bret shares more details on the Associate Product Manager Program, talks innovation in the Valley, and shares his journey from entrepreneurial teen to President of Salesforce. — P.S. Ep 329Identifying Fake News with Molly McKew, Information Warfare Expert

"In the U.S, we're a very optimistic, open-minded population, and that's great, but it also makes us susceptible to false campaigns. We need to step it up in terms of helping our nation be more aware of this." — Molly McKew The term “fake news” gets thrown around a lot in today’s media. Using social media as its main conveyor, misinformation spreads like wildfire to reach the most receptive audiences. Why do people fall prey to fake news stories, and how can we identify them? To answer these questions, we are joined by Molly McKew, CEO of Fianna Strategies, a consulting firm that advises governments, political parties, and NGOs on foreign policy and strategic communication. Molly has acted as a foreign policy and strategy consultant, as well as a Russia expert for governments in Central Europe and advisor to political parties in Georgia and Moldova. Stephanie and Molly dig deep into finding the truth behind different types of fake news campaigns. Ultimately, it’s not always about the information spread; it’s about the why behind it’s spread. "I think the key thing to figure out is the origin point. It's not really about what is true or not; it's what is the purpose of that information at that exact time." On this episode of Mission Daily, Molly, an information warfare expert, joins Stephanie to discuss disinformation campaigns. She also talks about the power of social media in the spreading of fake news, how to identify fake campaigns, and much more. — P.S. Ep 328Stopping Disinformation Online with Dan Keyserling, COO of Jigsaw

“Technology is an incredible, transformative force and it should always be accompanied by a serious conversation about how it’s affecting our society.” — Dan Keyserling Dan Keyserling serves as Chief Operating Officer at Jigsaw, a unit within Alphabet that uses technology to make the world safer. At Jigsaw, Dan and his team are focused on “understanding the methodologies governments use to engage in disinformation operations.” “Fake news” has massively affected journalists and hijacked media platforms, especially in countries where the government has vested interests in manipulating the flow of information. More appropriately named, “disinformation campaigns,” these stories have key similarities that, if identified quickly, can help platforms stop the narrative before it is spread. “It’s more important than ever that we build things that can help journalists and platforms detect when media has been manipulated,” says Dan. When asked about solutions, Dan offers a list of platforms, apps, and APIs that can be used to help identify toxic information and suspicious activity. However, his bigger focus is on opening up the conversation with the broader tech community. This is a growing global issue and is going to take ongoing, widespread efforts to combat. On this episode, Mission Producer, Austin Craig sits down with Dan to dive into the topic of ‘fake news’ — what it is and what it isn’t. Dan also shares how Jigsaw identifies disinformation campaigns online and how they are thinking about building solutions. — P.S. Ep 327The Future of B2B Sales with Marc Murphy, CEO of Atlatl Software

The pace at which technology is becoming obsolete is ever increasing. What was cutting-edge a decade ago, gathers dust in storage sheds today. Or, at least, most of the tech should be gathering dust in storage. Unfortunately, many organizations are lagging behind in upgrading their systems and while they may be able to stay afloat now, where will they be in another decade? Marc Murphy is the CEO of Atlatl Software, a growing tech company that provides visual configuration and CPQ tools to enable a better, more efficient sales process through the use of VR and AR. Atlatl sells to the top 10% of companies looking to move away from manual processes and commit to a digital transformation. Investing in technology can create huge ROI and improve efficiencies across an organization, and it’s something Marc sees as necessary for success in the future. “We're moving the sales process for B2B complex and industrial products outside of brick and mortar and into a virtual and augmented reality space. And we really believe that as our consumer lives change and we become more comfortable operating in a virtual space and buying and selling in a virtual space, B2B is going to move in the same direction as it has for other technologies. We've spent time creating a really unique enterprise-level capability to do B2B commerce.” Marc loves the fast-paced start-up culture, likely due to experiences throughout his life and career. First, he served as a captain in the U.S. Army, then in the private sector as a director and partner at Deloitte, and then as the CEO of Sparc, which was acquired by Booz Allen Hamilton. Marc took note of all the ways he worked as a leader, what he did well and what he would do differently if he ever got the chance to lead another company. On this episode of Mission Daily, Marc and Ian discuss all of that and more, including the importance of integrations and why he is so passionate about life in the start-up world. — We have a new partnership with b8ta! Ep 326Building Trust in the Digital Age with Cory Louie, Chief Trust & Security Officer at Checkr

“We’re in the middle of an evolution of how we think about trusting people.” — Cory Louie Cory Louie did not have a traditional path into the tech world. He started his career serving in the Secret Service at the White House. Prior to that, he volunteered with the Electronic Crime Special Agent Program where he was trained “to be a hacker in order to go after the hackers.” Cory now serves as Chief Trust & Security Officer at Checkr, an AI-powered background check platform that helps gig economy companies such as Uber, Lyft, Instacart, and many more run background checks quickly. Checkr is helping businesses scale by giving employers the ease of faster turnaround while also giving interviewees more visibility on the data shared with their potential employer. “We are really utilizing technology to empower decisions for fairness. A lot of people think of background checks as keeping the bad out but another part of it is ‘how do we empower the decision-makers with the right type of data to make the right decisions on hiring.’” On this episode, Ian sits down with Cory to discuss his unique career path from law enforcement to the tech sector, what CEOs and CIOs can do to build trust with their users, and what opportunities AI and machine learning will have in security going forward. — We have a new partnership with b8ta! Ep 325Creating Augmented and Virtual Realities with Anjney Midha, CEO of Ubiquity6

"You don't live in the real world, Z. From what you've told me, I don't think you ever have. You're like me. You live inside this illusion." — Art3mis in Ready Player One by Ernest Cline A classic sci-fi novel featuring the VR and AR of the future, in Ready Player One, Cline draws you into the OASIS, a VR video game that looks, feels, and acts like reality. It’s astounding tech and a story that has helped define sci-fi as a genre, but, today, how much of it is really fiction? How soon will we be able to join the proverbial OASIS? Anjney Midha is the co-founder and CEO of Ubiquity6, a startup using computer vision to create multiplayer experiences for virtual and augmented reality. Prior to founding Ubiquity6, Anjney went to Stanford University where he got bit by the entrepreneurial bug and founded his first company during his sophomore year. After college, Anjney began his career in venture capital as Founding Partner of KPCB Edge, a Kleiner Perkins fund formed to support founders in AR, VR and computer vision. Ubiquity6 has a mission to bring people together in physical spaces by building a platform to enable persistent, massively shared augmented reality experiences. Anjney discusses the "three pillars." "The three pillars: The way we bring folks together is to give anybody the ability to turn any real-world location into a shared space for a shared activity across the AR and VR," says Anjney. “Secondly, is a really fast and easy way to author in those spaces. Lastly, it is a way to launch and distribute those experiences with a URL without having to keep building these large, stand-alone mobile experiences that people don't want to download anymore." On this episode of Mission Daily, Ian and Anjney sit down and discuss how his experience in VC led to the creation of Ubiquity6, the future of AR and VR experiences, and the distinction between AR and VR for developers and gamers. — We have a new partnership with b8ta! Ep 324A Whisky Tasting with Callum O’Donnell, Brand Ambassador for Aberlour

“Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough.” – Mark Twain Did you know that there are 5x more infusion barrels than people in Scotland? Do you understand the difference between whiskey and whisky? Should you put ice or no ice in your scotch? To answer these questions and more, we turned to Callum O’Donnell. On this special episode of Mission Daily, we are joined in studio by Callum, a Brand Ambassador for Aberlour. Founded by James Fleming in 1879, Aberlour is a distillery in Scotland that makes Speyside single malt Scotch whisky. Ep 322Mapping the World for Good with Karin Tuxen-Bettman

“I grew up loving maps. They draw your eyes — you just want to go look at them and find a new place you’ve never been or look at the places you are familiar with.” — Karin Tuxen-Bettman Karin Tuxen-Bettman is a Program Manager at Google where she’s worked for more than a decade helping develop Google’s mapping projects. The field of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) married together all of her passions — economics, environmental science, and public policy. Now in the GEO division at Google, Karin’s job is to “help public benefit groups around the world use mapping tools to make the world a better place.” For the last five years or more, Karin has been focused on Project Air View, a partnership with the Environmental Defense Fund, creating air quality maps for every city and town in the world so that cities have the data they need to change behavior and therefore the health of its residents and surrounding areas. “90% of the world’s population lives in conditions that the World Health Organization says are below the livable air quality,” says Karin. A portion of Google’s street view cars are dedicated to collecting air quality and environmental data in order to power Project Air View. The data collected is then shared with research scientists to produce studies that inform actionable insights. On this episode, Stephanie and Karin sit down to discuss the various projects she has worked on while at Google, how she is using Google Maps to help nonprofits and public benefits around the world, and why mapping tools are a huge multiplier for these organizations to tell their story. — We have a new partnership with b8ta! Ep 321Protecting Your Identity Online with Emmanuel Schalit, CEO of Dashlane

“Nothing is more powerful than the truth when you run a company.” — Emmanuel Schalit Emmanuel Schlit is CEO of Dashlane, the safe and simple way to store all of your passwords in one place. With over 12 million users and a recently finalized Series D round, Dashlane is growing faster than ever and well on the way to their next goal of 100 million users. (At which point, Emmanuel may or may not get a tattoo, a promise he made to the hardworking employees of Dashlane.) “The average citizen has about 200 different digital accounts because everything in our life has taken on a digital life of its own,” says Emmanuel and “almost everyone uses the same password everywhere, because that is simple and more convenient.” Emmanuel describes this password problem in three parts. The first is that almost everyone is using the same password everywhere. Second, the size of the problem is exploding because people are creating more and more accounts online. And thirdly, everyone has more devices per person today than ever before. “The problem is truly growing on the consumer side,” says Emmanuel, which is allowing bad actors to take advantage. Prior to joining Dashlane in 2011 as CEO, he held a range of roles, including CEO of Flipside.com, SVP at Vivendi Media, and CEO of CBS Outdoor. Throughout his experiences, he’s found that working for and scaling a smaller company is more fulfilling than joining a large ship already on a set course. “When you start a company from scratch, you have a unique opportunity to apply all the things you’ve learned before. So you get this unique opportunity to do things right in terms of culture. When starting Dashlane, we wanted to build a company of people that fundamentally have one thing in common: that care about solving this problem.” On this episode, Chad and Emmanuel discuss the importance of protecting your digital identity in today’s world, how Dashlane is doing this differently, and lessons learned from Emmanuel’s diverse and accomplished career. — We have a new partnership with b8ta! Ep 320From Self-Taught Investor to CFO with Jennifer Ceran, CFO of Smartsheet

“I enjoy looking at companies, their futures, their strategies and how their financials work. It’s something I’ve always had a passion for.” — Jennifer Ceran How do companies make money? When do they choose to invest or pass? At what point in a company’s timeline should they IPO? What are the reasons to accept an acquisition? These are all questions many, even the business owners among us, don’t know the answers to. But they are all questions Jennifer Ceran has been obsessed with answering since she was in college. Jennifer, the CFO of Smartsheet, started her investing career while still in college and sold her first stocks to fund her trip to France to study abroad. “I was really curious about how the market worked,” says Jennifer, and that experience was just the start of what would become a lifetime interest. After completing her undergraduate and before attending business school at the University of Chicago, Jennifer went to work for Merrill Lynch as a Financial Analyst on Wall Street where she learned how Wall Street evaluates companies for investment. Following her time on Wall Street, Jennifer wanted to understand corporate finance and went to work for the Sara Lee Corporation and then Cisco. But in 2003, Jennifer got the call she was looking for — she was asked to join eBay as their Treasurer. With over 1 billion in revenue, Jennifer couldn’t turn down the offer. It was a chance at her dream job and a place where she could learn about technology’s impact on investing and the finance world at large. Jennifer served as Treasurer of eBay and Paypal for over 7 years. When she saw the impact of the financial crisis, she decided to transition into investor relations at eBay, doubling the company's stock in the two years she was in this role. But Jennifer wasn’t stopping there, she had her eye set on the CFO role and it wasn’t long before she found it at Box, a work collaboration platform where she led the company into a successful IPO. Now CFO at Smartsheet, Jennifer is helping companies and teams work more efficiently with Smartsheet’s collaboration software. “About 60% of your work is unstructured, it’s ever-changing. Smartsheeet helps you to manage that better. The platform can work with your marketing department and your finance department to give you real-time updates on work projects.” On this episode, Chad and Jennifer talk about the differences between Wall Street and Silicon Valley and how both places look at investing in companies. They also discuss her extensive career and where she sees innovation in financial management heading in the future. — We have a new partnership with b8ta! Ep 319Collaboration in the Digital Age with John Underkoffler, CEO of Oblong Industries

“I think that done properly, collaboration will come to be understood not just as an application or an app that you boot up for those five minutes when you need to use it, but a fundamental property of computation itself.” — John Underkoffler John Underkoffler, CEO of Oblong Industries, has developed a new way to share ideas online with the Mezzanine platform, Oblong’s flagship product suite that is effectively the world’s first multi-user computer. Mezzanine allows for multi-content, multi-stream, and multi-user experiences, or as John likes to describe it, “getting visual ideas out of people’s individual devices and onto a screen where everyone can see them.” Currently, Mezzanine is built for enterprise-level companies, but Oblong is not stopping there. They’ve developed a virtual version of Mezzanine called Rumpus built specifically for remote teams all over the world to collaborate on work projects more effectively. Communication is no longer an issue with Mezzanine and Rumpus, where your ideas are easily shared visually and not limited to the written word. “Cognitive empathy is what Mezzanine and Rumpus is really trying to get at,” says John. As Chad points out in the episode, “how many relationships have we lost because of flawed communication?” Language has its limitations. Mezzanine and Rumpus are making it easy to visually share ideas in real-time with multiple users. What could be possible for humanity if we all understood each other better? Many of John’s ideas were brought to life in the film, Minority Report, where he helped craft a vision for what technology would look like in 2054. The movie showed “how powerful UI itself can be,” says John. “UI as an extension of human cognition and human teamwork.” On this episode, Chad and John discuss his upbringing from learning to code to his experience in K-12 education, what cultural and economic factors are affecting innovation today, and John’s thoughts on how technology can propel humanity forward. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Ep 318Securing the Nuclear Arsenal with Lawrence Livermore Lab Director, Bill Goldstein

Bill Goldstein has always been attracted to a challenge. From his days in high school striving to understand theoretical physics problems, to his current work as the director of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, (LLNL), Bill is a magnet for tough problems. But the problems that he faces at LLNL today aren’t just theoretical. They are very real and account for the safety of the nation and of the world. See, LLNL isn’t just any old testing lab; LLNL is responsible for securing and maintaining the U.S.’s nuclear arsenal. The most pressing challenge Bill and LLNL face today is maintaining the safety and utility of the nuclear stockpile. But there’s a catch. They can’t ever actually touch or test the weapons. “These are tremendously complicated devices. They are evolving continually over time. They have radioactive materials in them. They have chemically active materials in them. They are changing every day. They've been aging since 1992. And the challenge of being able to ensure that they remain safe and reliable is what drives a great deal of the science at the laboratory, including our need for ever-increasing power of computing without being able to do the tests in real life. It's essential that we need to be able to simulate the behavior of nuclear weapons with the highest possible fidelity and the most accurate possible physics and chemistry. And we need bigger computers than we have today in order to do that.” So how do you determine if something is safe and secure without tests? You collect data and use computer simulations to predict the state of the devices. Not exactly the most foolproof plan back in the 90s, but as technology has advanced, so have Bill and LLNL’s simulations. With the stockpile secure, LLNL’s mission has become much broader: to apply cutting edge science and technology to enhance national and international security. On this episode, Chad and Bill discuss some of these other areas of focus at the lab, and dive deep into how data and computer modeling is helping solve some of the massive challenges facing humanity today. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Ep 317Your Most Valuable Asset with Sergio Villasenor

“Time is our most valuable asset and giving back time to consumers is transformative.” — Sergio Villasenor In 2017, Sergio Villasenor was a solo entrepreneur with a background as an engineer when he started Elliot, an early stage and venture-backed start-up based in NYC. Elliot is revolutionizing the online checkout process by enabling sellers with simple, one-tap checkouts across platforms. Sergio estimates that 80% of checkouts initiated online are abandoned in the checkout process. “Making checkout as easy as possible for consumers, shortening the path to purchase, making it simple for people to self-checkout in-store, and building great experiences on top of that” are all areas of focus for Sergio and his team. Sergio speaks to the challenges of being a solo founder, especially the challenges of being a first-time entrepreneur. Sergio believes it all comes down to surrounding yourself with the right team and part of that is knowing what you are good at and what you are not good at. On this episode, Chad and Sergio discuss how to overcome the challenge of being a solo founder looking for investment, why time is your most valuable asset, and how Elliot is giving this back to consumers in a simple way - at the checkout line. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Ep 316The Art of Audio Storytelling with Jacob Weisberg

“If you make a podcast that succeeds, you’ve helped to define what podcasting is. And in ten years, I don’t think that's going to be true in the same way.” — Jacob Weisberg Jacob Weisberg, co-founder and CEO of Pushkin Industries, makes podcasts for a living alongside his co-founder, Malcolm Gladwell. Jacob and Malcolm have been friends for over 30 years, first meeting in college while Jacob was working at Panoply, a podcast network produced by Slate. Soon after, Jacob and Malcolm launched Revisionist History, which takes another look at a past historical event, person or idea. Jacob was one of the first employees at Slate where he was as a writer focused on U.S. politics. He worked his way through the ranks, becoming an editor, then a manager, and eventually sold the company to the Washington Post. Today, Jacob predicts that the media of the future will continue to become a more audio-focused experience and he sees podcasting playing a vital role in that future. But, that vision won’t happen on its own; it takes growing and experimenting with the current market to find what works. He understands that - as is true with any business - podcasting as a business will require multiple revenue streams and cannot just rely on advertising revenue. “If your listeners are paying for content, you have a much greater ability to say no to an advertiser that you’re not comfortable with or just an advertiser that wants you to do something or say something that you’d rather not,” says Jacob. In this episode, Stephanie and Jacob discuss the origin of podcasting as a business, the importance of being creative every day, and what’s in store for the future of the podcast industry. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Ep 315A Well Lopsided Life with Randi Zuckerberg

Randi Zuckerberg is a true renaissance woman. Her long list of achievements includes working at Facebook in marketing for more than 6 years, producing shows on Broadway and founding Zuckerberg Media. She knows what it means to prioritize multiple projects at once and excel at each. Since leaving Facebook, Randi founded Zuckerberg Media, where her focus is bringing more young girls and women into the technology industry and STEM at large. “I knew once my work was complete with Facebook that the second chapter of my career would really be around getting more women in the room and changing what the upper executives of this company looks like,” Randi says. Her new book, Pick Three: You Can Have It All (Just Not Every Day), speaks to her personal life philosophy. “I’m really not a fan of the term ‘being well balanced,’” Randi says. “I don't think anyone has ever done anything they were proud on in life while being well balanced, so I give myself permission to be well lop-sided. Whatever I’m focusing on in the moment that I want to be great at, it's going to mean prioritizing that thing and saying no other things.” Ultimately, Randi summarizes, you can have it all but you have to prioritize and pick three things you want to focus on each day, whether it’s work, family, or your personal health. On this episode of Mission Daily, Chad and Randi sit down to discuss how she is managing her various projects, career mistakes and what she has learned from them along the way, and her personal mission to be ‘well-lopsided’ in life. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Ep 314The Inside Story with Lauren Weinberg, Global Head of Marketing at Square

Square might have started as a simple point of sale app for business owners, but in recent years it has grown to be so much more. With an incredible range of products that offer business solutions of all kinds, Square has been infiltrating new markets every day. There are many reasons Square has been so successful, and one of them is excellent marketing. As the Global Head of Marketing for Square, Lauren Weinberg has had a lot to do with that. Most marketers will tell you that storytelling is one of, if not the most important aspects of a good marketing campaign. Lauren and Square take that belief to heart and insert meaningful and impactful stories into everything they do. And the goal is always the same: “Everyone's here to make tools and services to make it easier for small business owners to succeed,” Lauren says. “It just really is in the DNA of everything that we do.” On this episode of Mission Daily, Lauren explains that ethos to Chad and dives into the details of how her team injects storytelling into their marketing campaigns. On social, in editorial, and even through a new video series and a foray into podcasting, Lauren is leading an expansion of marketing at Square and she’s excited to share it all. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org.
