Ep 313Deciphering the World’s Data with Doug Merritt, CEO of Splunk

Throughout the last few decades, the amount of data that has accumulated on the internet and in our systems has grown by orders of magnitude. Most believe that much of this data is useless. Logs, miscellaneous accounts and lines of code were just floating in the ether, and to many people, that was just fine. But Doug Merritt was not one of those people. Doug is the CEO of Splunk, which is helping people and companies turn “dark data” into usable, measurable analytical tools that can push a business forward. It’s not all business, though. For Doug, the story of data is more than just what Splunk is doing for businesses. In today’s society, the population is giving access to all kinds of data to various companies and third parties, which then go and sell our data to others for profit. Doug believes that we can democratize all of this data and create an economic good that will benefit all people. Plus, by analyzing big data and partnering with others doing the same, problems like human trafficking are being addressed in a way that’s never been done before. And it’s actually been successful. “Over a three-year time period, using Splunk and a host of other technologies, Global Emancipation Network has been able to make a significant dent in both identifying victims of human trafficking and the perpetrators. It is starting to actually turn the tide in a positive direction just by being curious enough to begin to ask questions of what would it take to solve a problem like this?” On this episode, Doug and Chad dive deeper into how that was possible, plus they discuss the ways data can be used to solve all manner of problems, and how we might prepare for a future where data is the key to everything. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Ep 312Data as the Root Cause with Susan St. Ledger of Splunk

“The big focus is driving transformation.” — Susan St. Ledger Susan St. Ledger, President of Worldwide Field Operations for Splunk, started her career as a major in computer science at the University of Scranton. From there, she was recruited to become a computer scientist at the National Security Agency, where she spent more than 6 years of her career. While at the NSA, Susan learned about Sun System’s hardware and software, and became familiar with the key players in the company. They recruited her away from the NSA and persuaded her to join their team full time as a pre-sales systems engineer. On her way to a promising career in many different fields, Susan realized her ambition to work in an industry with a large market opportunity. So where did she go? Susan joined Marc Benioff at Salesforce as Chief Revenue Officer, taking market opportunity to an entirely new level. Now, in her current role, Susan is focused on the world’s biggest problems, which she believes can all be solved with data. “We believe that every problem is a data problem. We’re thinking about solving some of the worlds greatest problems because data is at the fundamental solution and is the root cause.” Splunk is helping to tackle some of the biggest issues in the world, such as human trafficking and the opioid crisis while simultaneously helping small businesses become more efficient and reach their business goals. “When I think about all the innovation that we’re driving here at Splunk, it’s maniacally focused on removing the barriers between data and action.” Much of the world’s data is hidden and out of sight or not structured to achieve a specific goal. Splunk is uniquely positioned for success as they are the only data company that can digest unstructured data and make sense of it, driving action with data and achieving large scale goals not previously possible. “We want to be a part of every data-driven decision in the world.” In this episode, Chad and Susan sit down to discuss the importance of having a high-growth mindset when working for a high-growth company, how data will solve the world’s biggest problems, and where she sees Splunk heading into the future. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Ep 311Telling Stories with Steve Clayton, Chief Storyteller at Microsoft

“The heart of all great stories is people.” — Steve Clayton Steve Clayton grew up in Liverpool, England and fell in love with stories early on while observing people. He recalls being a child and watching his parents interact with gregarious friends and strangers, and Steve always wondered, what makes that person attract such attention?” Steve took a “weaving path” through his career before landing in this current role as Chief Storyteller at Microsoft. One of his first jobs was working in IT for a pharmaceutical company, where he quickly realized he was not a great computer programmer and pivoted. Steve has since served on technical teams for Microsoft in various roles and now he works on constructing the storytelling team, where he manages 30 people focused on telling the company’s story both internally and externally. As a team-builder, Steve has learned that it's important to hire people who are good at the things you are not and that the No. 1 quality he looks for in a potential team member is curiosity. “I want people who are naturally curious about the world. They will go and explore and try to understand why. I think that this sense of curiosity is the most important skill.” In this episode, Chad and Steve sit down to discuss Steve’s winding career from technical roles to storytelling, what it takes to be a great storyteller, and the cool new projects he is working on at Microsoft. As Steve always says... “the best stories always start and end in a pub.” Cheers! — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Ep 310Cowgirl Power with Gay Gaddis, Founder and CEO of T3

Gay Gaddis is Founder and CEO of T3, an advertising agency dedicated to helping clients build useful brands and create meaningful relationships with their customers. T3 is now one of the largest, female owned advertising agencies serving the Fortune 200, but it wasn’t always this way... In the late 1980’s when the economy was suffering badly, Gay was working for an advertising agency and saw that things needed to be done differently. In order to save her job and the company, she decided to write a business plan that she was confident would lead them down the right path. However, when she tried to move forward with her plan, she met opposition from her boss. She was faced with a critical decision: stay with her current job or go someplace else. “When I went home that evening, I realized that someplace else was going to have to be my place.” It was a critical decision for her as she withdrew a $16,000 check from her IRA to start what would become T3. Gay and her husband had 3 kids at the time and were strapped financially, so failure was not an option. Gay was determined to make the company work and quickly went to work securing new clients. To this day, Gay has never borrowed any money for T3 and has bootstrapped the entire business. Fast forward to 1992, Gay and the team at T3 were working with Dell, who at the time was still a fairly small sized company. T3 and Dell grew up together in the coming of the Internet age and worked on their first online marketing campaigns together. “We had been a results driven agency from day one. That was my business plan, to measure everything we did. My concept was to get the great results but also do really wonderful, creative work that would delight people, excite people, and create those emotional connections.” Her ability to marry both the data and metrics with creative and innovate ideas is what has continued to prove successful for T3. Gay recently finished her first book, Cowgirl Power, to share her story as a woman in business. Gay grew up on a ranch, horseback riding as a young girl, and her book tells stories of women with grit and power living in the Old West, a traditionally male-dominated time. In this episode, Chad and Gay discuss T3’s founding story, the sacrifices Gay had to make along way to ensure the companies’ success, and how her cowgirl upbringing has helped her manage risk in business. – Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Ep 309Investing in Adversity with Nitin Pachisia

Nitin Pachisia is a Founding Partner at Unshackled Ventures, a venture capital firm investing in and helping immigrant founders to succeed faster. After Nitin moved to the U.S. in 2005, he was ready to make the leap and create his own company but was faced with confusion and uncertainty. He was determined to find the answers to starting his new company and so he sought out advice from over two dozen different immigrant attorneys - all of which told him not to leave the company he was currently working for. The perceived dilemma? To start his own company, he may have to leave the country. Fortunately for Nitin, this simply wasn’t true, but it took him a lot of time to get to find the truth in the nuance. “I think the bigger problem than the immigration policy is the misinformation about immigration that's out there.” Nitin found that immigration attorneys didn’t fully understand the immigration laws. One good thing did come out of the confusion; he found the inspiration for his company. He decided to start Unshackled Ventures, a service dedicated to helping other immigrant founders experiencing the same frustration. “Our mission is to take care of founders who are immigrants to the country, and they can focus their time on building the company while we take care of nuances that are unique to immigrant founders.” Because of these unique challenges for immigrant founders, Nitin is looking for founders with a “strong adversity muscle” and he points out that many of the fastest-growing companies in the world are immigrant founded such as Google and Tesla. “Their own willingness to raise their hand that ‘I want to be in the United States’, gives them a purpose. They are also going through a journey that gives them that grit, that adversity muscle. We think that is what adds that slight advantage to an immigrant founder.” Unshackled Ventures is now 5 years old, with over 38 investments and about 100 successful immigrant filings under their belt. Because Nitin has lived the immigrant founders' journey himself, he understands that “it's not just about immigration, it's the whole package. A big component of what we get to do with our portfolio companies is working on access.” Nitin and his team at Unshackled Ventures not only help with capital allocation, access to investors and mentors but even help with securing leases and getting credit cards for founders. In this episode, Ian and Nitin discuss how Unshackled Ventures was founded, what Nitin and his partner are looking for in immigrant founders, and how they are uniquely positioned to attract the best founders from abroad. – Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Ep 308Modern Day Loopholes with Austin Craig

“New rules, create new opportunities” - Austin Craig Austin Craig is a video producer, storyteller, and Bitcoin enthusiast focused on emerging technologies and finding loopholes in systems. Ten years ago, when Youtube was just becoming the go-to place for video ads, Austin was helping build a multi-million dollar business with the team at Orabrush by using fun, entertaining videos to sell their oral health products. Soon after - and at the dawn of the new technology - he and his wife, Beccy Craig, discovered Bitcoin. Together they filmed Life on Bitcoin, a documentary that follows the couple as they live for 101 days using only Bitcoin. Their experiment showed the world what was really possible with this new technology. “I’m always interested in diving into the details and finding out what can be done that couldn’t be done before. I pay close attention to the details and look for those openings.” So, what are these openings, or as Austin likes to call them, “loopholes?” He defines them as: “when people figure out a trick hiding in plain sight and win big. It’s the thrill of a bank heist but totally legal. They’re usually normal people who pay attention and think deliberately.” On Twitter, Austin pointed out a few of the classic loopholes in history, most of which have had movies made after them. However, he emphasizes that loopholes are hiding in plain sight all around us, every day. In this episode, Chad and Austin discuss loopholes, what they are, how to spot them in your day-to-day life, and how you can capitalize on them. – Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Ep 307The Future of Crime Prevention with Garrett Langley, CEO of Flock Safety

“Our ultimate goal is not to solve crime, it’s to eradicate it.” That mission sounds like something from Minority Report, but it’s the mission Garrett Langley has set for his latest business venture, Flock Safety. Flock Safety is Garrett's third company and one that is working to provide advanced security services to police departments and homeowners associations in over 30 states. Unlike other security systems, Flock Safety's cameras can "see" and save license plate information, and then use that data to perform targeted searches during specific timeframes, helping to solve more local crimes. Before starting the company, Garrett noticed that law enforcement was having a hard time solving (and preventing) crimes due to lack of evidence suffering. There are over 7 million property crimes a year with the average neighborhood experiencing a crime every 2 months. Flock Safety goes after petty, non-violent crimes in an effort to reduce bigger and more violent crimes down the road. As Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City, has said, “Start with the basic stuff, the bad stuff just starts to go away too.” At Flock Safety, Garrett is thinking about crime prevention on a community level and not just on an individual level. “Its a two pronged approach,” as Garrett says. The company gathers data points from their cameras throughout neighborhoods and scan license plates and other pieces of evidence in real time so that crimes can be solved as soon as possible. The company is two years old but has already started to see progress in the neighborhoods they operate in. For example, one neighborhood reported to see a 34% reduction in crime since using Flock Safety. Privacy is a big focus for Flock Safety, which only holds onto customer’s data for 30 days and allows individuals to opt out of camera use and data collection. Garrett is fully aware that cameras and surveillance are on the rise throughout the world and he believes “it’s our obligation as a business to make it hard to misuse the system.” “The question for me is not ‘Should we have cameras?’ the question is ‘How will they be used? Who will own the data? What are the retention policies around that? And we believe that the best way to do it is to have a private- public partnership.” In this episode, Chad and Garrett discuss the future of crime prevention and eradication, how to balance privacy with security in the age of surveillance, and how Flock Safety is making progress on both fronts. – Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Ep 304Mental Models to Help You Capitalize on Opportunities

On today’s episode, Chad and Stephanie share two mental models for capitalizing on opportunities in your life. These two models are just the start of a ten model series we shared in our newsletter last week. Catch all ten here. You won’t have the ideas, the ideas will have you. The right ideas will attach themselves to and around you, and they’ll be impossible to shake off. “I did not have the certainty. The certainty had me.” –Carl Jung You might not be able to see where the ideas are leading, but you’ll feel pulled. You’re like the captain of a fishing ship who knows something BIG is in the nets. Sometimes the catch seems so big that you’re afraid to look in the nets, or pull them up. You’ll try not to think about the catch as you go throughout your day, but you won’t be able to help it. When certainty or an idea has you, you’ll know you’re onto something big. People will admire you and they will show it through imitation “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” as the saying goes. This is one of the hallmarks of a great idea, meme, or a novel concept. When you notice something new you’re doing is being mimicked by others, it’s a very sticky meme. You potentially are at the wellspring. “Passive, submissive imitation does exist, but hatred of conformity and extreme individualism are no less imitative. Today, they constitute a negative conformism that is more formidable than the positive version. More and more, it seems to me, modern individualism assumes the form of a desperate denial of the fact that, through mimetic desire, each of us seeks to impose his will upon his fellow man, whom he professes to love but more often despises.” ―René Girard If you are onto the right idea, people will imitate your ideas. This type of momentum will only help to propel you forward so long as you stay focused and keep building on your idea, or business. Ep 303How to Live in Flow with Sky Nelson Isaacs

“A synchronicity is a meaningful event that leads to a set of experiences we want to have.” - Sky Nelson Isaacs Synchronicity: noun. The simultaneous occurrence of events which appear significantly related but have no discernible causal connection. Sky Nelson Isaacs is a physics educator, speaker, and author of Living in Flow: The Science of Synchronicity and How Your Choices Shape Your World, which uses scientific research to explain acts of synchronicity. Sky has studied synchronicity and flow for the past 20 years and has shared his findings in academic articles and at events across the country. Sky explains that while many of our experiences in life are difficult, if we can assume all events are leading us to our desired outcome, then we are able to fully embrace synchronicity and all that it brings. In Living in Flow, Sky introduces the LORAX process for bringing more synchronicity and flow into your life. So what does LORAX stand for and how can we use it? L - Listen to your circumstance(s) O - Open your mind to the possibilities R - Reflect on how these new possibilities could work R - Release attachment to the way you thought things would go, or your desired outcome A - Take action and make a choice X - Repeat On this episode, Chad and Sky discuss what synchronicity is, how you can bring more of it into your life, and how being authentic allows you to live a life in flow. – Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.orgWe own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning. Ep 302Manufacturing Made Simple with Nathan Resnick, CEO of Sourcify

Nathan Resnick is currently the CEO of Sourcify, a job he’s been unknowingly working toward since his first day in middle school when he resold Livestrong bracelets at a margin. At Sourcify, Nathan helps companies manage and organize their entire production process within a single platform, helping them to say aligned and efficient. “Growing up, I was always entrepreneurial,” Nathan says. “I don't know if I learned it from anyone necessarily, but really a turning point or information and resource that I had was honestly The 4-Hour Workweek. I read that book my senior year of high school and it was just an eye-opener. Honestly, I was like, ‘Wow we can optimize, automate, and it doesn't seem that hard to start a business.’” Of course, starting a business is far from easy, and everyone who builds their own company knows that there are hardships and challenges along the way. But for Nathan, simply having processes in place for everything, keeping his ideas and plans mapped out, and hiring the right people have made a world of difference. On today’s episode, he explains his secrets to success, including how he overcame the challenge of his co-founder quitting on him the day they were supposed to launch the business, and what his plans are for the future of Sourcify. – Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.orgWe own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning. Ep 299The Safe Way to Save

“The biggest secret going on in Silicon Valley right now is how much people are compensated for their capital allocation skills.” — Chad Grills As a follow up to last Monday’s episode, Communism, Capitalism and Technology, Chad and Stephanie dive deeper into capital allocation and the importance of capital hoarding, i.e. saving money. Learning how to save money first, before you start to allocate capital in stocks, companies, or individuals is critical to success. But, this is especially hard in today’s culture, where there is a constant temptation for material things we often do not need. Chad and Stephanie share how they saved money throughout college, their early careers, and when Chad was deployed overseas, and why it’s important to start experimenting with your capital before doing so with someone else’s. In fact, Chad’s No. 1 takeaway from today’s episode says it all, “ To get good at capital allocation, unfortunately, that means you have to start by practicing acquiring the resources and holding them.” Lastly, Chad points out that the highest-paid executives in Silicon Valley are always excellent capital allocators. They are the ones who are often able to make investments or hold onto capital by making long term predictions. These are the “meta-skills that matter. And if you are going to push back against a sick culture, then you need to be armed with the best skills and the best philosophies.” Have you enjoyed these episodes on capital allocation? Ep 298High Weirdness with Erik Davis

"We want to be exemplars of humanity at the end of the time." - Terence McKenna Erik Davis looks at the world in a different way. He’s a novelist, writer, podcaster, and speaker, and his writings have covered everything from rock criticism to cultural analysis to creative explorations of esoteric mysticism. His most recent book, High Weirdness: Drugs, Esoterica, and Visionary Experience in the Seventies is out now. Erik loves to analyze “the weird” and in High Weirdness, he dives deep into the psychedelic culture of the 1970s; a time that was so strange, it was almost otherworldly. “We don't live in a psychedelic place. That's one of the mistakes that new agers and hippies made, is ‘Oh, I get the vision, and then I try to live there by dropping out and not doing anything.’ Well, no, we have to become much more flexible, and as Huxley said, ‘amphibious,’ where we're operating as intellects in a technological society.” In today’s episode, Erik shares his research, discusses Terence McKenna’s personal history, and paints a picture of a culture many of us never fully understood. Erik also talks about his writing, how being weird has opened the doors for new possibilities, and how he thinks we can go about saving the world. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org We own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning. Ep 297The Lawyer Turned Tech Guru (Part 2)

On yesterday’s episode of Mission Daily, we introduced you to Andrew Goldner, the co-founder of GrowthX, and we learned about his journey from lawyer to tech entrepreneur. Today, we have Part 2 of Andrew’s interview, in which he discusses some advice he gave to Mission co-founder, Ian, about being “coin-operated,” and his strategy when it comes to investing in new companies. He believes that investing all comes down to looking at a company’s revenue, the knowledge founders have about their revenue streams, and how reliably they can predict them into the future. “The reality is that not all revenue is created equally,” Andrew says. He also explains that no company can be built without a strong foundation, and part of that is knowing where you are, where you are not, why you aren’t certain places, and what you need to do to reach your goals. That takes intention, focus and a lot of hard work, but it’s worth it. Andrew dives into all of that and more, on today’s Mission Daily episode. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Ep 296The Lawyer Turned Tech Guru (Part 1)

Andrew Goldner is the co-founder of GrowthX, and while he had a passion for technology very early on in life, it wasn’t until later in his career that he decided to pursue his first love. After initially studying law with the idea of going into politics, Andrew was able to use his technical knowledge to his advantage and build a brand for himself in Internet-based law. Eventually, Andrew gave up life at the law firm and, after a quick detour in the restaurant business, he landed in the world of technology. He initially worked at DoubleClick, helping salespeople and operations close deals with new partners and customers. In doing so, he learned that making deals was all about personal relationships and finding congruity, two lessons he brought with him to GrowthX. “When I was doing deals, I would encourage the salesperson, no, put down the keyboard,” Andrew says. “Put down the phone. Let's get on a plane, and yes, it's going to cost us a little money and time. Let's go and meet those people in their hometowns. Let's get there the night before. Let's take them out to dinner. Let's start building relationships with them, human interactions, because we're going to build up political points from that, so the next day when I am negotiating with the lawyer I can be more casual. I can be more human.” On Part 1 of his interview with Mission Daily, Andrew talks about his journey from law to tech, entrepreneurship and venture capital, and everything he went through in between. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org We own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning. Ep 295Got Junk? Brian Scudamore’s Got The Solution

“I think at an early age while some people dream of being Superman or Wonder Woman or a fireman or whatever it might be, I really dreamt of running a business.” Brian Scudamore started 1-800-GOT-JUNK more than 30 years ago with a single truck and a simple business plan. Today, he’s built his business into more than just a successful company. Rather, he’s created an entrepreneurial and franchise empire that empowers other business owners and partners to build their own franchises and succeed. “I'm incredibly proud of what we've built and more importantly how we've built it,” Brian says. “And if we can give a platform to others that's what life's all about to me.” Brian built 1-800-GOT-JUNK slowly. It took him eight years to reach $1 million in revenue, and now, the company does $1 million in revenue on a daily basis. Getting to that point was not easy, though. It meant figuring out how to build franchises and then relay that knowledge to new franchise owners — a process that took 10 years to master and included many dark moments, like when he had to fire all 11 of his employees to save the business. That experience taught him about the importance of company culture, and it is part of a trend for Brian. Throughout his life and career, he’s always been interested in learning and improving however he could, then passing those lessons along. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org We own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning. Ep 294Communism, Capitalism and Technology

“While communism and capitalism have been ostensibly battling for the last century or more, technology came along and ate everyone’s lunch.” —Chad Grills Today’s episode dives into economics and the philosophies behind them. If you are signed up for our newsletter, you know that we recently introduced this topic and are using today’s episode to dive deeper. (Psssst if haven’t signed up for our newsletter yet, you can do so here!) In the Mission Daily Newsletter, Chad asks “How high is high for our GDP?” Yes, it’s true that the U.S. has the highest GDP in the world but what could our GDP be? Are we preventing our own growth? And how can we ensure resources are spread to the right people and companies who are creating new jobs, generating wealth for more people and adding value? Chad explains that we are at a time in our culture when “we need new ideas and new examples of people who have been excellent capital allocators — people that are experts at multiplying money and then returning that money to the people that gave them their initial investment.” So, ask yourself this… how are you going to move from being a capital hoarder to capital allocator? How are you going to help spread wealth and resources within your community so that more people can do more with less? There are plenty of opportunities for us all to become better capital allocators and to improve the world around us, and it all starts with the individual. Heads up! On next Monday’s episode, we dive deeper into the topics of capital allocation, philosophies and announce an upcoming mini-series we are launching! Ep 293The Current State of Media with Kmele Foster

“Don’t take any wooden nickels.” A depression-era saying that encourages people not to be cheated or duped, it was a phrase that Kmele Foster’s father told him a lot as a child - and one he never quite understood. But in today’s world of media overload, it can be hard to find the truth in the noise and even harder to tell when you’ve been misled. Having worked as co-host of The Independents, a daily news show on Fox, Kmele is intimately familiar with the pace at which journalists work. And while he believes mistakes aren’t intentional, he knows just how easy it is for the truth to slip through the cracks. Today, Kmele is trying to change that. As co-founder and Lead Producer at Freethink, a media company telling powerful stories about today’s pioneers changing the world, Kmele is helping create media that promotes what he thinks is the most important story to share. “We live at the best, most incredible time in human history. A time when people have this enormous individual capacity and ability, because of all the technology at our disposal, to make massive change in the world. That does not mean that there's a world with no problems, it means that we've never been better positioned to be able to tackle the world's big problems.” In this episode, Chad and Kmele discuss the current state of journalism, what it's like starting a media company today, and what’s in store for the future of the industry. — Don’t forget, we have a new partnership with b8ta! Ep 292Same Town, New Business: Sean Whiteley on Building Businesses in Silicon Valley

Sean Whiteley has been in the tech business since the internet was first taking off back in the 1990s. In fact, he was early enough to the party to snag the [email protected] email address. But a lot has changed since those early days, and Sean has been through plenty of highs and lows along the way. He’s loved his time in Silicon Valley, but he recognizes that life in the Bay Area isn’t all that the world has to offer. “Don't get too stuck here in Silicon Valley,” Sean cautions. “There's a lot of greatness and I love it here. I love the dynamic here where risk is rewarded and arguing is okay, it's a good thing, it's not personal. You're just trying to come up with a better solution. I identify with a lot of the qualities that are here, but I also realize that this is not representative of most of the world.” Still, though, Silicon Valley is where Sean built his family and founded his current business, Qualified.com, which is making its mark in the new and emerging field of conversational marketing applications. Qualified — which is an app built to alert your sales team when qualified leads are visiting your site — offers a full stack of meeting tools that you can use to engage your customer be it through chat, phone calls or some other conversational interface. On this episode of Mission Daily, Sean talks about his life in the Valley, the importance of finding the right business partner and building the right culture, the stages of building success and the role luck plays into it all. — Don’t forget, we have a new partnership with b8ta! Ep 291Inside Media and Storytelling with Yves Bergquist

“I think we are standing on the cusp of an explosion in creativity around media.” —Yves Bergquist As the Director of AI & Neuroscience in Media at the Entertainment Technology Center of the University of Southern California, Yves Bergquist is leading the charge to connect the fields of neuroscience and entertainment. At ETC, Yves and his team are pioneering a new way to test an entertainment project’s narratives, what audiences they will resonate with and why. Yves is thinking more broadly than traditional Hollywood studios and asking deeper questions. “How do you we understand stories and narrative from a purely cognitive standpoint?” he asks. “And how do we understand what kind of stories resonate in what way with what kind of people to generate what kind of behavior?” Yves was exposed to the entertainment industry at an early age thanks to his single mom, who worked in wardrobe on film sets in France. As a boy, he naturally gravitated towards psychology, and has successfully married that passion with his love of entertainment in his work at ETC and his start-up, Corto. Corto is an AI startup which Yves hopes he can utilize to continue his work leveraging A.I. research to understand what attributes of media content resonate with specific audience segments. In this episode, Chad and Yves discuss the two types of knowledge — narrative and procedural knowledge — how AI will learn to outpace humans on procedural knowledge, and how we can begin to understand the oldest and most human form of knowledge — storytelling. “Building something and selling something are going to be the two skills that are the most valuable in an A.I. or AGI future. Those are the two things that we can be confident are going to be the monopoly of the human mind for a while.” — Don’t forget, we have a new partnership with b8ta! Ep 290Building Social Enterprises with Brian Linton

Can you imagine growing up with 30 fish tanks in your room? That’s 30 tanks stock full of fish that each needed their own special care. Seems a bit excessive, maybe even a little weird, but that’s exactly the environment Brian Linton, CEO of United by Blue, chose to grow up in. Since Brian was a little boy, he’s engaged with the world in his own, unique way. “My parents allowed me to be a little bit weird and that definitely spawned the entrepreneurship spirit in me. I never thought about doing anything else. It never occurred to me to not do my own thing.” Having grown up surrounded by tanks of blue, it’s no surprise that one of these things Brian wanted to pursue was ocean conservation and clean up. After spending years searching for effective ways to help clean the waterways, Brian finally began to conceptualize an idea in 2008 and United by Blue was born. United by Blue is an apparel company dedicated to cleaning our world’s oceans. For every product sold, they remove one pound of trash from oceans and waterways. Since its inception, the company has removed more than 1.6 million pounds of trash and has over 1,000 stores nationally. On today’s episode of Mission Daily, Brian joins us to discuss his unique background, the struggles and rewards of building a social enterprise, and United by Blue’s plans for the future. — Don’t forget, we have a new partnership with b8ta! Ep 289Stepping Outside Your Comfort Zone

“You have to pick and get to the core of what makes you the most uncomfortable, what makes you cringe when you are sharing it, what makes your palms sweat - that is what you have to work on.” - Chad Grills Our greatest fears can become our greatest sources of strength if we are willing to face them… and facing them with friends by your side makes that transformation a lot easier. Unfourtantly, as hard as it is admitting a personal fault or problem to yourself, it’s even more difficult sharing it with someone close to you. In today’s episode, Chad discusses the importance of talking to a friend when you are in need of an outside opinion. He also opens up with listeners about a time he reached out to a friend for advice on something he’s been struggling with for years. — Don’t forget, we have a new partnership with b8ta! Ep 288Talent Agents for the Digital Age with Steven Galanis

“I’ve always been an entrepreneur. I’ve always had a side hustle no matter what it was.” –Steven Galanis Steven Galanis’s career has spanned from options trader, to film producer, to now CEO and Co-Founder of Cameo, a platform where fans can book personalized video shout outs from their favorite celebrities. Founded on the idea that “selfies are the new autograph,” Cameo has more than 15,000 notable talents on the platform today, making it larger than any agency on earth. Cameo is changing the way the entertainment industry has traditionally worked. It used to be that an agent represented the talent and booked work for them. Now, Cameo provides talent the ability to opt-in only to opportunities they want, which creates an authenticity Cameo can thrive on. Big names such as Cassius Marsh, Brett Farve, and Snoop Dogg have joined and love the platform, which just raised their $50 million dollar Series B round and are hiring new staff. Prior to founding Cameo, Steven was an options trader for the Chicago Board of Trade, where he quickly realized that the trading pit was hierarchical and slow to adopt technology. “Everybody was always talking about what had been,” Steven said. “When I moved to tech, everybody was talking about what could be.” Steven didn’t settle on the trading floor for long. He quickly found his way into the film industry, where he produced movies and television shows and eventually was introduced to his co-founder of Cameo. “You hear about product market fit a lot,” Steven said, “but founder market fit might be even more important.” Each founder filled an important role with specific skill sets that worked well together for founding Cameo. In this episode, Chad and Steven discuss the founding of Cameo, how the company is changing the way the entertainment industry has traditionally worked, and the importance of founder market fit. — Don’t forget, we have a new partnership with b8ta! Ep 287Keeping It Real with Sarah Cooper

“Comedians build up the tension so that you can release it.” — Hannah Gadsby After leaving her promising career in the tech industry, first at Yahoo then Google, Sarah Cooper realized she needed something more. Sarah wrote 100 Tricks to Appear Smart in Meetings, while at Google and when it went viral, it gave her the confidence to leave the corporate world and break into comedy. She quickly realized that comedy would act as her guide for finding her own personal mission. Today, we are surrounded by nuances that are hidden beneath the oftentimes suffocating world of “politically correct.” Sarah wanted to stay true to herself on stage and online, so instead of hiding behind these rules, she saw it as her mission to dig up the nuances and present them in a humorous, tasteful way. In today’s episode, Chad and Sarah discuss why she left Google, where she finds inspiration for her comedy and writing, and how she got her start in stand up comedy. Ep 286How Today’s Stories Drive Tomorrow's Reality with Neal Stephenson

“We’re living in a story-based world. We’re hard-wired to process things through the lens of stories which are linear narratives.” - Neal Stephenson Writer and futurist Neal Stephenson sees mythology everywhere; from the stories we tell ourselves, to the stories the media tells the masses, to the stories about the future of humanity. These “myths” define our past, outline our present, and will build our future… so what can we do to make them realistic, optimistic, and (capital “T”) True? Neal walks this line of thought in his latest book, Fall, where he asks the reader to question how close we are to emerging technologies that will allow us to learn and evolve more quickly. In this episode, Chad and Neal discuss the concept of ‘islands’ online, the impact of social media on our collective imagination and our ability to live out our agreed upon realities. Neal also shares how he came to be the first employee at Blue Origin, a company founded by Jeff Bezos, which is committed to advancing space travel. Currently, Neal serves as Chief Futurist of Magic Leap, a company working to bring transmedia projects such as AR and VR to the masses. Ep 285Building up Small Businesses with Zapier CEO, Wade Foster

“The thing we’re really excited about is bringing automation to the masses. We see so many small businesses and so many individuals inside businesses using automation to level up their own skills.” –Wade Foster Wade Foster is a unique founder for many reasons. He started Zapier as a side project with his two co-founders while working a full-time job. They worked late nights and weekends as they bootstrapped the business until they hit an inflection point. Having only accepted a little over $1 million in funding, Wade kept his focus on customer development and solving for the customer's problem, which made all the difference. Zapier is now doing the job of trained developers, connecting back end applications (aka ‘Zaps’) for small businesses that would otherwise have to outsource or hire help to complete the task. All along, Wade had one idea for the business, “Let’s make something cool that solves some people’s problems.” At the time of Zapier’s founding, Wade lived in Missouri and didn’t want to start a company using the Silicon-Valley route, which dictated you borrow huge amounts of capital to achieve a higher and higher valuation. Instead, Wade stayed focused on the customer and delivering a solution that would make sense for them. Wade recalls the first customer who paid for a single ‘Zap.’ “The first customer we had was a huge ‘Aha’ moment for me,” he says. Wade explains how that customer needed help beyond the initial Zap that Wade had connected for him. It was in that moment that Wade and his co-founders realized Zapier could be so much more than just a side hustle. Zapier was growing fast and the only way for Wade and the team to keep up was to build out the developer platform. It was this decision that proved to be a massive inflection point for the company's growth. Zapier now has more than 1,600 apps on their platform and more than 220 employees worldwide. The company — which has always been remote — is still a 100% fully distributed team, meaning Zapier does not have an HQ. But the lack of offices hasn’t had any negative impact on the success of the company. In fact, Wade has made it a point to help other remote teams figure out how best to achieve their goals. (Check out Zapier’s Ultimate Guide to Remote Work, in which Wade and his team have laid out the fundamentals for successful remote work here!) Zapier continues to change the way companies scale by allowing small businesses to act like a much bigger company. Where small businesses would normally need to hire a couple of developers to reach their goals, Zapier is filling the gap with a product used by virtually all online businesses today. — Don’t forget, we have a new partnership with b8ta! Ep 284Extinction, Evolution, and Event Horizons

“In the modern world, there are still many event horizons left to have the courage to go through and discover, and the only things worth doing are the things you currently think you can’t.” In today’s episode, Chad and Stephanie review last Monday’s newsletter where Chad dives into three key themes that we’re going to be integrating into our current and future episodes on Mission Daily. Those three themes are: extinction, evolution, and event horizons. What do these mean and why are we focusing on them? Extinction - 99% of all life on earth has gone extinct. We are an extremely adaptable species, however, it’s important for us to think about existential threats to humanity. How can we make this a daily conversation so that we are progressing humanity towards evolution and not towards extinction? Evolution - In order to evolve, we must accept the next biological singularity or our own species may be at risk. Think Elon Musk and Mars. We must embrace our own evolution and step forward into the future. Event Horizons - The emergence of human language was the first singularity that humans faced. We often fall into the trap of near term thinking. But what does the future hold thousands of years from now and how are you helping to create the next event horizon for humankind- good or bad? Ep 283Living In A State Of Play with Alex Weber

In the words of artist and graphic designer Paula Scher: “If you’re not in a state of play, you can’t make anything.” As creatives, the moment we take our work too seriously and lose our sense of play is the moment we hit artist’s block. The world is your playground; emotions are the jungle gym, relationships the merry-go-round, your career the swings... and humor is the cushy rubber under it all. Comedian Alex Weber is a big believer in humor and its power to transform lives. From participating in American Ninja Warrior to speaking at TEDx to being an award-winning TV host, no matter the project, Alex always incorporates humor and humility. “Humor is just an express route to being very honest about where we are, where we want to go and how we’re gonna get there.” From a young age, Alex understood the power of comedy and he used it as a way to overcome struggles, take on bigger challenges, and express himself. For Alex, humor is “an effective means for success;” one that keeps you from taking yourself or your work too seriously. In today’s episode, Chad and Alex discuss the importance of humor in our daily lives, why being unafraid of failure is key to achieving greatness, and what healthy competition has taught Alex about life. — Don’t forget, we have a new partnership with b8ta! Ep 282Cultivating a Service Mindset with Jennifer Tejada

“People, when you arm them with the right information, the right insights, and the right systems and processes, can make great things happen.” What do you think of when you hear the word “boss”? Do you imagine someone like Bill Lumbergh from Office Space? Or maybe your mind does cartwheels and immediately jumps to Bowser and the Koopa squad from Super Mario Bros 3. However you define “boss,” Jennifer Tejada has a new definition for you: someone who sacrifices, who works tirelessly to build a sense of community, who puts in those early mornings and late nights to make ends meet. Jennifer is the CEO of PagerDuty, a digital operations management company. Its cloud-based platform manages real-time operations for any type of business to ensure its digital services are always on. Since its founding, PagerDuty has drawn a lot of attention from investors, raising over $173 million over the course of several funding rounds. The company went public earlier this year and at one point was valued at $1.8 billion dollars. That valuation, and the relative success of PagerDuty in such a short amount of time, is thanks in no small part to Jennifer’s leadership. Her unique brand of management style was inspired by her father, who ran and operated a hospital when she was young. Growing up, she spent a lot of her free time in that hospital - doing everything from selling Girl Scout cookies and serving pancakes to the night shift, to filing papers and making copies. Those experiences left their mark and today, she’s turned those lessons of community and leadership into inspiration for how she runs PagerDuty. In today’s episode, Jennifer joins Chad to discuss her work with PagerDuty, how she uses her father’s “serving others” mentality on a day-to-day basis, and what she foresees PagerDuty doing in the future. — Don’t forget, we have a new partnership with b8ta! Ep 281How Fact Influences Fiction with Douglas E. Richards

“Every technology has great things that it can do and horrible things that it can do.” Douglas E. Richards is a New York Times bestselling science fiction author. Douglas frequently uses the world of scientific fact to influence the creation of his fictional worlds. He’s authored over a dozen different novels, both for adults and children. Prior to working full-time as an author, he was a biochemist at a number of different pharmaceutical companies. In a time when so many works of sci-fi and fiction take a dystopian view of the future, Douglas prides himself on being optimistic about the future of humanity. In today’s episode, Douglas explains how he transferred his experience in labs and the business world to being an author, how he aggressively researches his books and why the best way to break into the world of publishing is to go at it without an expectation of success. She recently published her first book Grace Under Pressure: A Masterclass in Public Speaking. In addition to her writing, Lisa’s taught public speaking to executives and leaders at Salesforce, Adobe, Oracle, Fitbit and countless others. Ep 279Liminal Dreaming with Jennifer Dumpert

We tend to think of consciousness and the waking world in black and white terms. One minute you’re awake, and the next you’re asleep. But what if there was something in-between? A zone between consciousness and unconsciousness. A place where you can get a pure, unfiltered look at your subconscious, where you can think freely and unencumbered by the issues of the waking world. Jennifer Dumpert, author and dream researcher, is here to help you understand this in-between space, a space she writes about in her book titled, “Liminal Dreaming: Exploring Consciousness at the Edges of Sleep.” Liminal dreaming provides a great opportunity to bring back important lessons from your subconscious mind. It also offers a chance for us to tap into our pure, unfiltered creative potential. Not to be confused with lucid dreaming, liminal dreaming is a much simpler skill to learn and master. As Jennifer points out, not everyone can control a lucid dream, but everyone is a natural at liminal dreaming. In today’s episode, Jennifer breaks down the basics of Liminal Dreaming. She discusses how to begin experimenting with liminal dreaming to enhance your life and wellbeing and how the art of liminal dreaming has impacted her own life. Don’t forget, we just announced our newest partnership with b8ta! B8ta.com gives you access to some of the most innovative and cutting edge consumer tech products. This week, we will be giving away the Chilipad, a water cooled & heated mattress pad that allows you to control temperature for optimal sleep. Enter the giveaway for a chance to win! Quotes: 2:47- “There is a continuity of consciousness between awake and asleep. You can really stretch it out. You can be 80% awake and 20% dreaming or the opposite.” 3:07- “Waking and sleeping is not binary. We often think of it as on or off, one or zero.” 8:58- “My hope is that people will go into this state [hynagogia] and actually do things with it.” 13:23- “The creative process is the point, not the end point. Creativity is the way you that you take what you learn from the subconscious into the waking world.” 29:47- “I really want to democratize the visionary experience.” 49:31- “Liminal dreaming is kind of like surfing the edge of conscious and unconscious. It’s learning to surf the space where your both dreaming and awake at the same time and kind of surf down the middle of them.” Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org We own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning. Ep 278Running Your Business Like a Team Sport with Mark Cranney

“There’s an offense, a defense, there's a special team and there’s an attention to detail. I really applied that when I decided to go into sales right after school. I was going to be a pro. If I’m going to do it, I’m going to do it right.” Mark Cranney expects whatever business he’s a part of to run with the efficiency of a football team running a play they’ve done a hundred times before. He learned a lot of lessons from his time on the field when he was in high school and college, and he’s found a way to take those experiences from the field to the boardroom. Mark currently serves as the COO of SignalFX, a SaaS-based monitoring and analytics platform for cloud-native companies to monitor their online and digital infrastructure. Prior to that, he had a seven-year stint at the renowned venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. Ya know, getting shot at and shooting back is a lot funner.” 29:51- [Advice for young entrepreneurs] “Understand what your hiring criteria is, what it’s going to take to be successful, be able to articulate that- write it down.” Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org We own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning. Ep 277Staying Creative with Austin Kleon

Do you ever have days where you’re just not feeling it? Where every single line you write feels like a slog and you don’t have an ounce of creative inspiration left? Days when you think, “If I have to write or edit one more episode description I’m going to start screaming”? Well, author Austin Kleon is here to show you how to put an end to your creative slumps, once and for all. Austin is a New York Times-bestselling author. His most recent book, Keep Going: 10 Ways to Stay Creative in Good Times and Bad, goes into Austin’s top 10 lessons for how creatives can avoid slumps and keep their creative juices flowing (even when it feels like they’ve run out). In this episode, Chad and Austin go in-depth on each of Austin’s 10 methods for maintaining creativity. They cover everything from why you need to program downtime into your workday to how to (effectively) procrastinate. It’s kind of a 24/7 thing. The ideas come when they come.” 9:09- “I really believe in taking a daily walk.” 10:31- I happen to be an extroverted writer. So being on the road for me is really valuable because I get to interact with people face to face and hear what their problems are and what they are interested in and how my work is resonating with them.” 14:06- “It’s best for a creative person to approach things on a day to day basis, to have some sort of daily practice, to not worry too much about what happened yesterday or what’s going to happen tomorrow but to really focus on the day, time, energy and space you have right now.” 19:52- “If you focus on the process and not the product, then that will take you somewhere further and far more interesting.” 27:33- “Attention is the engine that art really runs on and it’s the very thing the world wants to steal from you.” Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org We own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning. Ep 276Bridging The Bureaucratic Divide with Ben Renda

In the words of Eugene McCarthy, “The only thing that saves us from the bureaucracy is its inefficiency.” Having served in the military and worked for the federal government, Ben Renda is very familiar with how bureaucracies can create inefficiencies and inaction. Ben is the Chief Operating Officer of Google Fi, a new kind of cell phone service that automatically switches between multiple networks to give you the best service in over 200 countries worldwide. Prior to working for Google, Ben spent over a decade serving in the military, where he identified a number of pain points for integrating new technology into the armed forces. Now, Ben serves as a bridge between Washington, the Pentagon, and Silicon Valley - taking what he’s learned from both worlds to help the other function better. In this interview, Ben, Chad, and Ian discuss how to overcome issues of bureaucracy, the lessons Ben learned from his time in the military, and how to build a team you can rely on. I just find that unique and that reminds me of the same ethos of the military where everybody is working for the unit.” 26:53- [On Google culture]- “In general, we look for basically a smart, general intellectual athlete that’s a good team player and can exhibit leadership when you need to.” 31:30 - “We do have the most amazing military in the world but the way we procure technology makes a lot of sense for certain things and for other things it just doesn’t make as much sense. So that’s where DUIx really tried to fill the gap.” 33:10- [On culture in the military]- “People aren’t incentivized to take risks outside of the operation context. I think that is one of the greatest challenges, how do you reward intelligent risk taking in the military?” Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org We own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning. Ep 274Solving the Food Waste Crisis with Christine Moseley

40% of consumable food is wasted in the U.S. each year. 25% of fresh water is also sent down the proverbial (and literal) drain. America accounts for 23% of the globe’s methane production. It does not take a mathematical genius to understand that these numbers, which are growing every year, are not sustainable in the long term. Enter Christine Moseley and the team at Full Harvest. Christine, the Founder and CEO of Full Harvest, has made it her life’s goal to create better and more sustainable uses for our discarded food. Full Harvest has a straightforward mission, connecting farmers directly with food and beverage companies who are looking to buy surplus produce. In this episode, Christine and Chad sit down to discuss America’s food waste problem and how Full Harvest is working to fix it. They also talk about how Christine showed up in San Francisco with barely more than the clothes on her back and managed to turn her dream- to make the world a better place- into a reality. Ep 269Investing in the Future of Cryptocurrency with Kyle Samani

Cryptocurrency markets are, by their nature, fast-moving and difficult to predict. The constant ups and downs of the value of bitcoin have made headlines more than once. So, in one of the fastest-paced financial markets in the world, how do you track where things are going next? Kyle Samani is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner at Multicoin Capital, a thesis-driven crypto fund that invests in tokens and companies reshaping entire sectors of the global economy. Ep 268Owning Your Digital Identity with Daniel Buchner

In the modern age of technology, your digital identity is becoming increasingly important. How does someone use websites and services like Amazon, Google, and Apple without compromising on privacy and security? Many of the answers can be gleaned from Daniel Buchner, Senior PM and Head of Decentralized Identity at Microsoft. Daniel and his team at Microsoft have made it their mission to create a more secure and private internet where your identity is protected. He also represents Microsoft in the Decentralized Identity Foundation, and is working with members of DIF and W3C to make decentralized identity a reality. Daniel’s also spent time at Mozilla, where he ran the Developer Ecosystem product group and various W3C Web standards efforts. In this interview, Chad and Daniel sit down to discuss what Daniel and his team at Microsoft are working on, why secure data and financial transfers are becoming more and more prominent, and how Daniel and Microsoft are helping to lead the charge for data privacy. 2:46- “You should be in control of all elements of your identity and know what you disclose and have the ability to minimize that disclosure so that you stay safe and private.” 9:05- “I think it’s to put users back in control of their daily lives and so much of that is digital these days. Once you do that, you empower people with privacy. I think people should gain a security in what the fourth amendment promises and what some of our rights promise.” 23:02- “I think the extent that you believe in something will determine the persistence you have in going after it.” Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org We own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning. Ep 267Unbank Yourself with Alex Mashinsky

Alex Mashinsky is the CEO and Co-Founder of Celsius Network, a network that lets you earn interest on crypto and instantly borrow against it. “Unbank yourself” is the company’s motto and for good reason. Celsius is disrupting the world of banking and financial management, which has long sought to regulate and limit the market for their own interests. “We feel that banks have become such monopolistic institutions that they stopped caring for their depositors, they only care for their shareholders. They are basically extracting way too much from all of us, the 99% of Americans who are not part of the 1%, and giving it all to the few people who are the major shareholders of these institutions.” Celsius is changing that and Alex is leading the charge. His personal experiences have afforded him a unique perspective and understanding of financial systems. According to his website he was, “born into communism, reared under socialism, and is currently thriving under capitalism.” He’s also a prolific inventor, holding over 50 patents as well as over a dozen awards for his work in the technology and finance field. In this episode, Ian and Alex talk about how Alex and Celsius are working to disrupt the banking industry, what Celsius is looking to build in the long-term and lessons Alex has learned from his previous business ventures that he used while building Celsius. 2:11 – “We feel that banks have become such monopolistic institutions that they stopped caring for their depositors, they only care for their shareholders. They are basically extracting way too much from all of us, the 99% of Americans who are not part of the 1%, and giving it all to the few people who are the major shareholders of these institutions.” 3:09 – “Tenacity and doing the right thing does pay off.” 6:01 – “The blockchain is a new revolution. It’s an even bigger wave than the internet wave because it touches all the money in the world. It’s like a new set of rails. Just like Voice Over IP needed a new set of rails to disrupt phone companies. The blockchain is a new set of rails that is disrupting the banking and the money supply which really has been abused by central banks and governments for the last 50 years.” 10:27 – “All of us should have our money work for us, not just us work for our money.” 21:48 – “You need to kill your existing business and build it on the blockchain.” Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org We own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning. Ep 266101 Days of Bitcoin with Austin Craig

Is it possible to live and thrive using nothing but bitcoin? For Austin Craig and his wife, Beccy, this question served as the inspiration for their documentary Life on Bitcoin. The film follows Austin and Beccy as they attempt to purchase food, shelter and other necessities using nothing but bitcoin for 101 days. It’s exactly that kind of adventurous spirit and innovative thinking that inspired us to hire Austin as the producer of our newest (and still secret) podcast. In this episode, Stephanie and Austin sit down to discuss the struggles and triumphs of living on nothing but bitcoin for over three months. They also talk about how to see past the crypto hype for a clearer view of what the future holds for bitcoin. Ep 265The Past, Present, and Future of Cryptocurrency with Anthony Pompliano

Anthony Pompliano is a Co-Founder & Partner at Morgan Creek Digital and a crypto influencer. Through his work at Morgan Creek, Anthony manages capital on behalf of institutional investors. Together, he and his investors are helping foster an ecosystem that may be nascent today, but has exponential growth potential in the long term. Anthony believes crypto and other digital currencies are the way of the future because of their ability to be both secure and transparent. In this episode, he and Ian discuss the ways in which crypto has become popular, even in its infancy, and the path it will take as it matures into a widely-used method of payment and asset management. 14:47 - “One of the hardest things in the world is to be an independent thinker. It is a learned skill. It’s more about courage than anything else, and trust of yourself.” 22:20- “The beauty of all of this is it literally comes down to transparency. Transparency creates, not trust, but verifiability. The ability for me to verify everything you say is incredibly important.” 22:53- “There is a saying in crypto, “don’t trust, verify” and you can’t verify without transparency so that's really what all of this is.” Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org We own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning. Ep 263Decentralizing Banking with Erik Voorhees

Our modern-day system of banking wasn’t always based on fiat currency controlled by the Federal Reserve. In fact, for most of U.S. history, there hasn’t been a central bank. It wasn’t until 1913 that the Federal Reserve was created and the dollar was no longer backed by gold or silver, thereby allowing for inflation. Cryptocurrency is changing the way we generate, store and transfer money. And for the first time ever, the idea of a centralized banking and financial system is slowly fading into the past. Erik Voorhees is the founder and CEO of ShapeShift, a company that allows the seamless transformation of cryptocurrency assets. In simpler terms, ShapeShift allows you to turn cryptocurrency like Bitcoin into another form of crypto, like Ether. Through his work with ShapeShift, Erik has gained a unique perspective on how the worlds of traditional and crypto finance interact and, more often than not, clash. His company has often faced criticism from both the media and mainstream financial institutions. In this interview, Chad and Erik sit down to discuss how ShapeShift is working to decentralize the financial and banking system. They also talk about how cryptocurrency and other digital currencies can be used to fight inflation and the crypto trends Erik’s excited about for the future.
