Kyle has a long history in strength and conditioning, which gave him a great base for construction. Initially he felt like training on top of his job would be a bit much, but after his first year in the new field his body start telling him otherwise. Today he shares about the lifestyle habits he made to create time for a quick morning workout, his programming, and why he is feeling better than ever. To learn more about Mindful Strength click here
S2025 Ep 263263 Adam McAtee: Do we need corrective exercise?
In this episode Kathryn and Adam talk about what corrective exercise is, why we see some movements as faults and others as safe, and how to assess whether something actually needs to be corrected. Take this as an example... a client walks into the gym and they stand with their feet turned out. We might have been trained to look at that as an imbalance, a movement fault, something that should be corrected. But is that person's natural position actually a problem, or does their body just not conform to the alignment we were taught in our textbooks? This podcast is for the movement teachers, anatomy nerds, trainers and coaches who want to challenge the way they think about exercise. Adam is a pilates teacher, teacher trainer, physical therapist and business owner who is passionate about bringing better evidence into the studio and gym. To learn more about Adam's work click here. S2025 Ep 261261 Joe LaVacca: How to keep training through pain and injury, advice from a physical therapist
We do so many podcasts on pain because pain is a part of human life, which means it's bound to come up in training at some point or another (or all the time). Most of what we have been taught about pain is that pain = damage, pain is not normal, pain shouldn't be happening. Avoiding anything painful can really hold people back, limit movement and keep us stuck in sedentary patterns which arguably makes everything worse. In this episode Kathryn and PT Joe Lavacca talk about helping people keep moving and training, while managing pain. They talk about pain medication, where cardio fits into the picture, and of course strength training in the gym as rehab. S2025 Ep 260260 Jules Mitchell: Do we actually need stability and proprioception training?
Today we welcome Jules Mitchell back to the podcast for a 5th or 6th time, we have lost count! Jules and Kathryn have been colleagues and friends for a number of years, and today they are talking about stability and proprioception training. The big question they keep coming back to is why do some exercises get labelled in research as stabilizing, or for proprioception, while others don't? What is a deadbug giving you for stability that a deadlift isn't? This podcast gets into the weeds of language, philosophy, and will have you questioning the common narrative on stabilization. We hope these episodes help you understand strength training in more detail and help you become more successful with your training. Episode addition: in this episode Kathryn talks about CNS activation being a main reason why we need rest intervals, but there's more. The energy systems that fuel lifting also need time to recover, and recovery is aided by the cardiovascular system. More on this in an upcoming episode! S2025 Ep 256256: Why writing down your lifts and training is a game changer
Welcome to our second solo episode of 2025! If you have not already listened to episode 255 we suggest you start there. In todays segment Kathryn is talking about the value of writing down your lifts and keeping track of your numbers over the long term. When you write down your lifts you collect valuable data about yourself, your patterns, and you gain a lot of context. If training isn't going well or feeling great, you have a log to look back through which will help you make strategic changes. Tracking your lifts over time also shows gaps in the training, shows where you might need more consistency, more or less volume etc... Welcome to Kathryn's first solo episode of 2025! In this segment Kathryn talks about the big mistake a lot of people make when it comes to strength training, which is rotating the exercises too frequently. Building strength means repeating the same exercises over long periods of time. There is a lot patience involved with strength training. Kathryn talks about certain exercises she plans to train forever, and how to make those decisions based on your goals. She also talks about how most people underestimate how much they are capable of lifting, what to do when you can lift your goal weight, and why you won't be able to add more weight to your lifts forever. We love Shanté Cofield and everything the Movement Maestro has to offer! S2023 Ep 233233: Strength Training is Mobility Training
If you have been taught that strength and mobility are opposites, this is a great podcast to listen to. Strength done properly doesn't limit you mobility. The two can go hand in hand, especially when you consider end range strengthening. Say goodbye to avoiding the end ranges or feeling weak and shaky in deep positions. Capacity can be built in any position, although a bit more challenging in the end ranges, it's a worthwhile endeavour if your goal is a healthy balance. Hypermobile? Feeling really stiff? This is something in this episode for you. To learn more about our weekly Mindful Strength classes click here!
S2023 Ep 232232: Why a 2-minute rest in the middle of your training can change everything!
Most of us think of recovery as something that happens after exercise is over. You have a good meal, get some sleep and voila! When it comes to weight training and building strength (think deadlifts, squats, pull ups, push-ups) resting in the middle of your sessions is absolutely necessary. Your anaerobic energy systems actually require minutes of rest to fully recuperate, which is really different from aerobic energy systems. In this podcast Kathryn and Chris will teach you about rest within the strength practice, and what happens if you don't prioritize this essential element. S2023 Ep 231231: Why You Really Need a Strength Program
In this episode Kathryn and Chris talk about the benefits of following a strength program, if strength is your goal. Building strength is like baking a cake, unless you are a very experienced baker, it's useful to follow a recipe. Programs are like recipes for strength, and yes, they can be customized. S2023 Ep 230230: "Doesn't that put a lot of load on your back?" Yes! That's why I'm doing it
Today Kathryn and Chris talk about why load is love, especially for those areas of the body where issues tend to arise (low back, knees etc...) After posting a deadlift video Kathryn received the question "doesn't that put a lot of load on your back?" to which she responded... YES, that's why I'm doing it. When it comes to safety we are only taught what to avoid, as opposed to what we can do in order to prepare. In this podcast we also talk about pain, and how to build discernment during intense movement. To learn more about our upcoming strength program for Handstands and Pistol Squats, click here! S2023 Ep 229229: Are you using enough resistance to build strength?
Today Kathryn talks you through the question of how much resistance to use for strength building. Strength training does not just mean doing things that feel hard, it's much more systematic and defined. Simultaneously, not all weighted exercises are strengthening. If you are considering using more (or less) resistance and you want some pointers listen in. Want to come take our Mindful Strength classes and/or programs? S2022 Ep 227227 Kathryn & Kyle: Accessory exercises and how to use them
Accessory exercises are supportive to your big goals. Want to be able to do a chin-up? Yes, practicing chin-ups are cool, but what's even more useful is assessing which supportive exercises you need more of and building them up. Accessory exercises build up your weaker muscles, ranges, or movements. Kathryn talks about how she started with 3 months of accessory training before graduating to full-body lifts like squats and deadlifts. This type of training transformed her injuries and pain and built her confidence for heavier lifting later to come. *** Want to learn more about strength and how to bring more strength and science to your classes? S2022 Ep 224224 Kathryn & Kyle: Rethinking safety, alignment, and mechanical ways of understanding the body
Kathryn and Kyle talk about the mechanical model and give a few examples of mechanical ideas that negatively affect the ways we move and feel. Mechanical thinking teaches us that load is something that breaks us down, that safety is nurtured through avoidance, and that alignment is to be perfect. We believe that safety is built through gradual and meaningful exposure and that resistance has the capacity to build us up (not just wear us down). Kathryn also explains why she rarely assesses alignment, and rather is more interested in capacity, especially with beginners. This podcast will give you major food for thought!
