Shauna Shapiro - Mindful Discipline & Kindness [100]

How can we create family relationships that weather any storm? Dr. Shauna Shapiro explains how our old paradigms of parenting get it wrong, and research-proven ways to become a mindful mama. Some important takeaways from this conversation: “What you practice grows stronger.” If we practice judgement, we become more judgmental. If we practice kindness, we strengthen hat. We know that with neuroplasticity, our repeated experiences shape the brain. Shame actually prevents us from making the changes that we want to make. Instead, kindness releases dopamine and turns ON the learning centers of the brain, activating us for change. As a parent, you can be in your sovereignty and power, hold boundaries, and keep a soft heart. Click here to start the conversation about this episode! Shauna Shapiro, PhD, is a professor, author, and internationally recognized expert in mindfulness and compassion. Dr. Shapiro has published over 100 journal articles and book chapters, and co-authored the critically acclaimed texts, The Art and Science of Mindfulness, and Mindful Discipline. Her 2017 TEDx talk is rated one of the top 10 TED-talks on Mindfulness. Fan of the Mindful Mama Podcast? Support it by leaving a quick review -----> on iTunes or on Stitcher (or wherever you listen!) What To Do When You're Squeezed [99]

Life regularly squeezes us. No matter how much we try to avoid or block out the difficult moments, they're inevitable. That's just life. The real question is, how do we respond to those moments? Do you shame and blame yourself with harsh words? Or do you offer yourself compassion, understanding, and kindness? This episode is a very special one taken from a live talk I did last October at the Mindful Mom Revolution event. Start the conversation about this episode here! Fan of the Mindful Mama Podcast? Kimberly Johnson - Healing, Balancing and Restoring Post-Childbirth [97]

Hunter talks to Kimberly Johnson about healing, balancing and restoring post-childbirth. Hunter’s big takeaways from this episode: There are big problems with the way we handle birth and the post-partum period that are leading to long-term problems for moms. We have unrealistic expectations about 4th trimester; healing is slow. We treat it like it’s any other time. We don’t understand that there are specific needs. There are 5 universal needs and these are necessities not luxuries: Rest - deep, extended rest 30-45 days lying in period Nourishing food Loving touch Companionship of wise women Contact with nature Click here to see the show notes and leave your comments! Kimberly Johnson is a birth doula, Somatic Experiencing practitioner, Sexological Bodyworker, postpartum advocate and single mom. Conscious Dads - Jon Vroman & The Front Row Factor [96]

Yes, I cried a little in this conversation, but more than that, I was inspired by talking to Jon Vroman about his work with the Front Row Factor and helping to make dads more conscious. Three big takeaways from this conversation were: The power of dedicating your life to making a difference - as Jon says, choosing our experience. The power of reminders and intimacy with death. We have 936 weekends from when your child is 0-18 years old- every one that goes by is a weekend you won’t have again. His experience of fatherhood and how to step up, deal with anger, and model the kind of life you want your kids to live Jon Vroman inspires others to Live Life In The Front Row™ by teaching the art of moment making. He is an award-winning speaker, #1 bestselling author of The Front Row Factor, podcast host and founder of Front Row Foundation, a charity creating front row experiences for individuals who brave life-threatening illnesses. 5 Steps To Equanimity [94]

After being in the car for hours on our drive home from visiting family for Thanksgiving, we got stuck in traffic during the last 15 miles home. I was driving, feeling totally done, more than ready to be home. The girls were understandably irritable. It was not a great scene. Yet, out the window was the most beautiful sunset. It was breathtaking -- a pink and red epic experience. It was utterly breathtaking. Both were happening at the same time - our suffering, and this incomprehensible beauty. Noticing and appreciating this sunset was a conscious practice in that moment. It's the same with our own equanimity - it's a conscious practice. Here are the five steps that I discuss in detail in this episode: Practice meditation regularly. Cultivate the conditions for happiness. Notice your thoughts and feelings with curiosity. Interrupt the harmful thoughts. Rest in your feelings and feel them fully. Rinse and repeat. I hope this episode has helped you my friend! If so, I'd really appreciate your feedback. Happiness Is Other People with Carla Naumburg [93]

In her editorial,Happiness is Other People, Ruth Whippman (@ruthwhippman ‏) says that, "The most significant thing we can do for our well-being is not to 'find ourselves' or 'go within.' How To Bring Peace To The Table With Your Family [92]

We focus on the food, but it’s the relationships that bring us together. Yet, gathering with our families is not always all we’d hope it would be. Many of us come from families with a lot of suffering. Certain relationships tend to cause a lot of suffering in us. Peace is not always served at our tables. It can be a stressful time to say the least. But it doesn’t have to be. We have enormous power to change the dynamic. We can participate in the status quo or we can become part of the change. How do you prepare for an experience with your relatives? Do you get anxious? Do you focus your thoughts on what you don’t like about them? In other words, do you expect a bad experience? If you do, you are probably not disappointed. When we focus all of our energy on what we don’t like, we find little that we do. The good news is that we can change our experience by changing ourselves. The first thing that we have to realize is that we are responsible for our own emotions. Your frustration comes from inside of you. The same experience doesn’t have to leave you suffering. You can choose how you would like to be with your family. How do we choose? Mindfulness practices give us room to make change. And changing our mindset is a huge part of it. 6 Steps for Bringing Peace to the Table... Click here to share comments and find show notes. Teaching Well-being & Resilience to Kids - Renee Jain [90]

Why don't we teach every child how to deal with challenges? How to process their feelings? For my latest podcast guest, Renee Jain, all her work started with those questions. We are in an epidemic of anxiety now - for both kids and adults. That's one of the reasons I was so happy to meet someone who was bringing this important work straight to kids. Renee talked to me about the science of wellbeing. We talked about the exciting research on our brain's plasticity - meaning that we can change our set-point or disposition. We can change. And importantly, we can teach our kids that they can change too! We talked about the purpose of emotions, and how important it is to teach that. We talk about the influence of technology. And so much more... Renee Jain specializes in cultivating skills of resilience in both adults and children. Renee’s gift is taking research-based concepts and transforming them into engaging and digestible learning modules. For children, she has created one-of-a-kind programs found at GoZen! to teach life skills via digital animation. ABOUT HUNTER CLARKE-FIELDS: Hunter Clarke-Fields is a mindfulness mama mentor. Ep 88How To Care For Highly Sensitive Children - Melissa Schwartz [88]

Does your child sometimes feel like a ticking time bomb? Ready to explode at any moment? That's how it was for me with my oldest daughter. The Science of Self-Compassion - Kristen Neff [84]

What do you say to yourself when you mess up with your kids? If you are like many of us, you berate yourself. My guest, Kristin Neff, has done the research that shows that our harsh self-criticism does NOT work. It doesn't help us grow and become better parents. In fact, it does the opposite. So what does work? Self-compassion. Kristin Neff is a pioneer in the field of self-compassion research, conducting the first empirical studies on self-compassion over a decade ago. In conjunction with her colleague Dr. Chris Germer, she has developed an empirically supported eight-week training program called Mindful Self-Compassion, and offers workshops on self-compassion worldwide. Dharma Mama - Leslie Davis [79]

“To become a mother is to enter a dharma door.” What does that mean? It means that the experience of parenting is a teaching, or a path to awakening, and I absolutely believe that. In this episode of the podcast, I talk to Leslie Davis of Dharma Mamas, a blog and online community for mindful mothers. Leslie and I share a spiritual tradition in that we follow the teachings of mindfulness from zen master and peacemaker, Thich Nhat Hanh. Some highlights from the conversation: Being there for our children when we don’t want to be there for them. Getting support as mothers Dealing with feelings of unworthiness It's never to late to begin anew You can find out more about Leslie Davis at Dharmamamas.com or her personal blog, Heartlunge.com. It's Not About You, It's All About You [78]

Poolside, about a month ago, I had a conversation with a couple of cool mamas in my neighborhood. I'm not sure we had ever discussed parenting before. One mom mentioned that her greatest realization in parenting was this: It's not about you. What does that mean? It means that our kids will have problems, moods, etc. that are not about you. Your job is not to fix every single one of your kid's problems. Refreshing, isn't that? But also...it's all about you. How so if it's not about you? What I want to point out here is that parenting is NOT about fixing your kids. Generally, we do far too much "molding," "shaping," and "teaching." Instead, it's about you - about regulating your own reactions and triggers. Did you benefit from this episode? Ep 77The 5 Rules of Parenting...Really? [77]

What are the 5 rules of parenting? In this episode, Carla Naumburg and I talk about the article, The 5 Rules of Parenting by Mike Troiano. After 54 collective years of parenting, does Mike have all the answers? Yes, and no. There are things we really agree with, and things don't. My three big takeaways from our conversation were: You need support at the baby stage Should your toddlers fear you? No! Parenting is about the long game, and strong relationships are paramount And listen for mine and Carla's parenting wins and fails! We also mentioned Ron Leiber’s The Opposite of Spoiled and Fam Zoo. Family Mindfulness Retreat [76]

Family mindfulness retreat? Yes, it exists! Earlier this summer, my two girls, husband, and I packed ourselves off to a quiet mountain in New York for a week of no phones, no wifi, no screens, no alcohol, no meat...and it was actually fun! In this episode, I tell you all about it. Around 200 people were there, interested in living mindfully, including tons of children and teens. As adults, we had lots of meditation time, and our children learned mindfulness practices too. Would this be right for your family? Listen to find out! Fan of the Mindful Mama Podcast? Simplicity Parenting - Kim Payne [74]

Did you know that highly stressed western children looked just like war refugee children in terms of stress? In this episode, I talk to Kim Payne, author of Simplicity Parenting. We talk about "the undeclared war on childhood,” and how our culture of too much too fast, too young, is overwhelming our kids. Learn how simplifying you and your child's stuff and environment will bring more ease to your lives. Take back your kid's childhood from the “molded plastic tsunami” of toys and too much screen time. Did you know that brothers and sisters often play together better with fewer toys - why? Find out how to activate their innate neurology to foster more cooperation and collaboration. Kim Payne offers a very different image of screen time than our recent guest, Deborah Heitner. He points out that studies show screens damage brains. Instead, Kim is pro nature, pro family connection, pro REAL friends -- and these take time and are slow. I really connected to our discussion of "connection to self" - feeling comfortable in your own skin, and knowing your own values as opposed to pop values. About Kim: Kim John Payne, M.ED has been passionately working to thousands of people give voice to the feeling that something is not okay about the new normal of overwhelm that so many people are now experiencing. Vacation Mind [73]

What is vacation mind? In this episode of the podcast, I discuss this idea as presented by Leo Babuta in his Zen Habits post, The Practice of Work Mind & Vacation Mind, Simultaneously. He defines it: "Vacation mind lets that anxiety go, and is just present in the current moment. Time is less important, enjoying yourself is the priority." So how do we do that in parenting? In everyday life? I'd love to know your takeaways from this solo episode. How can you practice more vacation mind in your life? Start the conversation in the comments. Self-Care Isn't Selfish, It's Your Responsibility [70]

In the 90s Oprah had a life coach on who said something that shocked her studio audience of suburban moms. She had asked the audience to make a list of all the priorities in their lives. Then she asked, “Where are you on that list?” Lots of the audience did not have themselves on the list at all. Then she made her outrageous suggestion: “You should be the #1 priority on your list.” The audience booed. Oprah said, “Hold on,” and asked them why they booed. Oprah said, “It doesn’t mean that others are kicked off your list when you put yourself first.” We’ve come a long way since then. Or have we? If you made a list of priorities, who would be on your list? Where would you be on your list? Many moms tell me that taking care of themselves is not a priority. If you are really honest with yourself, is that you? The thing is, if you are not #1 on your list, you’re realizing a fundamental truth: You cannot give what you do not have. If you are not taking care of you, you are gyping your children and your family. You are offering them a second-rate version of you. And you are role-modeling a life of “not worthy.” Making yourself a priority isn’t selfish. In fact, it’s the opposite. It’s called taking responsibility. Worried About The Long Days Of Summer? [69]

School ends soon and summer will officially begin around here. In the past, this triggered anxiety for me. What would we do all day? How do we get through the long days of summer? This is the same feeling that leads many to put their kids into camp after camp, activity after activity. Downtime is like an enemy to be conquered. In my house, we aren’t worried about hearing “I’m bored” anymore. In fact, I don’t hear it very often because my girls are so used to having unstructured time to follow their own imagination. Now, I’m not afraid of “I’m bored,” but I used to be. My anxiety over my daughter’s outbursts and volatile emotions used to make me really worry about the long days of summer. My fear led me to follow my habitual reaction of trying to control things more. I needed to shape and structure the day so that I could keep my anxiety at bay. It was a struggle. Do we suffer from our circumstances, or from wanting it to be otherwise? The Buddha taught that most of our suffering is caused by grasping at things in an impermanent world. Both the Buddha and Patanjali’s yoga sutra’s teach that the path to liberation involves letting go of our grasping - letting go of wanting things to be other than they are. This podcast shares 6 tips on how to get through the long days of summer - in a deeper way. Fan of the Mindful Mama Podcast? Permission To Totally Ignore Your Children [64]

Which Parent Are You? [63]

Picture yourself in this scenario: it’s early Spring. You are walking to the park with your child on one of those warm days that feels like a gift. Winter jackets home on their hooks, you feel the fresh breeze on your arms. Now take the same setting, but this time you are pre-occupied with your thoughts... Your daughter tugs at your hand to go look at a worm. No, you say, you have to get going. You take your phone out of your pocket for a quick check to see if there have been any incoming emails since your walk began. You are barely aware of your surroundings, caught up in your ruminating thoughts. Your relationship with your child has narrowed down to getting her from here to there, another to-do. The differences in these two scenarios are clear even though these situations might look alike to the casual observer. We can see from these scenarios and our own lives that rumination and getting lost in anxieties take us away from what’s real in the here and the now. Happily, we have clear ways to become more present. Mindfulness practices help us to gain more control over our minds rather than be controlled by them. Why practice to be present? The benefits include more focus, decreased stress, increased self-regulation, better sleep, a better immune system and more. For me, the most important reason is so I can show up for my family and life without all the layers of anxiety and depression that used to stop me from living fully. I am more aware of the beauty in my world. I can really be there to love my children. Step-by-step instruction and support is exactly what you get when you first start with Mindful Parenting. More than just an online course, it’s a deep-dive into self-awareness and skillful communication. You’ll learn tools that will improve every relationship in your life (including with yourself!). And...once you enroll, you're in it for life! You can join the live course again and again to support your learning in the future. Check it out here. Thank you so very much for listening, my friend. Two Surprising Things Parents REALLY Need [62]

Now that I’ve taken the jogging stroller around the block a few times, I realize that the two things that I really did need, the two things that mattered most... weren’t even on my radar. What are the two things parents really need? Parents need help when we have conflict. When there’s a conflict, a few things happen: our stress response kicks in and we become reactive, then we often communicate from old patterns (i.e. your own parent’s voice comes out of your mouth). We can break it down into two problems: The stress response Unskillful communication We come into the most trouble in our parenting when we are stressed, so it’s important to understand the stress response. There are biological and evolutionary reasons why we “lose it.” “Losing it” refers to those fast, automatic reactions to a perceived threat which can be triggered in stressful interactions with our child. This literally cuts off access the rational, thoughtful part of our brain. The first and most fundamental thing we need as parents (for our stress response!) is this: #1 Mindfulness You’ve heard of it. It’s a buzz word, but for good reason. Mindfulness practice is one of the single most effective tools we have to lower our stress response and become less reactive. With practice, we can acknowledge our thoughts and feelings, but not be swept away by them. Once we are able to calm down and become less reactive, what do we say? Many, many people are like me - the language that I used was the language I grew up with, commands and demands that didn’t work and caused resentment in my young child. The language I was using was weakening our relationship rather than strengthening it. The Second Thing parents need help with (perhaps most of all): #2 Skillful Communication We go into parenting with great intentions to be loving and kind, but with the combination of our stress response and our unskilful, habitual ways of communicating, we get really stuck. Since parenting comes down to, at it’s core, our moment-to-moment interactions with our children, parents need training in how to communicate in those moments. The blaming, shaming, judgmental words that come out of our mouths create resentment in our children and make them less likely to cooperate with us. What do I wish I had as a young parent? Mindfulness for the stress response and cultivating non-reactivity. Skillful communication for more cooperation and a better relationship. I believe that mindfulness and skillful communication are incredibly powerful tools for parents and for every part of our lives. These two things can change the world, one family at a time. That is why these are at the heart of my Mindful Parenting course. For more information, click here. Fan of the Mindful Mama Podcast? Play Is More Important And Easier Than You Think - Avital Schrieber [60]

This story illustrates the importance of play more than most: In studies of sociopaths stuck in prison with life sentences, NONE of them had healthy play histories. Play and creativity is essential for children's development, but is threatened by our too-busy, achievement oriented lifestyle. Are your kids getting enough of the right kind of play? Avital, The Parenting Junkie, and Hunter riff about the problems they have with our current educational system and why they made the choices they did. Learn Hunter's big beef with the conventional education system and what it has to do with intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation. Find out why you may not need as much as you think and why you may need to be LESS involved than you think. Avital has a bonus in the comprehensive Mindful Parenting course. What is it? Working with thousands of women over the years, Hunter has put all of that learning into a comprehensive 10-week course. Mindful Parenting will give you all the tools you need to be the calm, loving and compassionate parent you were born to be.
