How one absorbs information should be seen hand in hand as important as the actual information that you take in. If you are only capturing and understanding 10% of the information you are absorbing through inadequate means, there is a lot of efficiencies to be made by using better sources of informaton. S1 Ep 102Empowering Victims & Perpetrators (Mere Mortals Episode #62 - Restorative Justice)

Full

Is there a better, utilitarian form of administering justice than the system of retributive justice? In this themed episode Juan and Kyrin discuss the topic of 'Restorative Justice'. The basic principle of restorative justice is to repair the harm caused by criminal behaviour, rather than the retributive justice system of ensuring that people get what they deserve (i.e., punishment). This usually involves a meeting between the victim and offender with the aim of making amends for the harm and enabling reintegration of the parties into their communities. As part of the discussion the Mere Mortals crew also dive into: real life examples of how restorative justice is applied, whether the principle benefit is for the victim or offender, the empathetic requirements for the system to actually work and some reasons downsides of its application. For those who are unaware, Wim Hof is a beautifully insane dutch man known as the Ice Man, who invented a breathing technique that allows him to endure cold (but also heat) well beyond what is considered normal. Kyrin has recently started practising this method, as well as facing his mortal enemy, the cold.In the second half of the session the Beanie Crew start to bounce topics a bit, going from electric cars that can last 1,000,000 miles, the glorious smell of petrol and detergent, the best way to spend $5 and Guatemalan death trap Chicken Buses. In this episode of Musings Juan and Kyrin discuss this question as well as: what is your own personal philosophy (or set of rules to live by), feeling the negative more strongly than the positive, how much as an individual one should pay attention to apocalyptic risks and providing principles rather than a personal story to those who ask for advice. S1 Ep 94The Ethics of Pain Management (Mere Mortals Episode #57 - Pain)

Full

Where does the responsibility of doctors lie, to reduce short-term pain or to increase the probability of long-term rehabilitation? This is one of the questions Juan and Kyrin ponder in this themed episode of 'Pain'. There can be many types of physical pain (psychogenic, phantom, acute, chronic, etc.,) as well as the addition of emotional pain (i.e,. pain not caused by an unpleasant physical sensation conveyed by sensory neurons). Some of the others topics we touch upon were: treating pain through bullshit methods (that actually work due to the placebo effect), the worst pain we personally have experienced, whether the world would be a better place with more or less pain and some mental techniques that can be used to take the emotional edge of pain. S1 Ep 85Feeling Of Guilt & Asking For Forgiveness (Mere Mortals Episode #54 - Guilt)

Full

What is the difference between shame & guilt? Find out within this themed episode, as Juan and Kyrin discuss the topic of 'Guilt'. Guilt is an emotional experience that occurs when a person believes (accurately or not) that they have compromised their own standards of conduct or violated universal moral standards. It can come in different forms (individual, socially imposed, collective, guilty pleasure, etc.,) but we all know that heart wrenching feeling of having done something wrong. However, guilt should not be viewed universally as something only negative. It is helpful in knowing where are your own & others moral boundaries, and can be an impetus for change. That being said it is not something to seek out for it's own sake. A recommendation from Kyrin to help avoid acting in a way that will later induce guilt is to become clearer of the boundaries of your responsibilities and to behave less selfishly. S1 Ep 81The Good & Bad Of Following Your Passion (Mere Mortals Episode #51 - Passion)

Full

Can you have passion for a pursuit without a struggle? This is one of many questions posed in this special outdoors episode of 'Passion'. Funnily enough the etymology of the word derives from the latin 'pati', which roughly translates to 'that which must be endured', a different impression from the passion talked about nowadays. For this episode we focused solely on the perceived positive interpretation of the word, such as following one's own passion.Unfortunately just having a passion and following it is not enough to lead a good life. Examples such as Jeffrey Skilling and Elizabeth Holmes (of Enron and Theranos notoriety) exist of individuals with a passion but were willing to trample over moral boundaries in the process. On the flip side, following your inner calling can lead to a life that is amazing, despite the innate suffering. We hope the viewer finds their passion and fulfil it to its limit. S1 Ep 50Episode #40 - The Psychology of Money & Value

Full

In this episode Juan and Kyrin discuss 'Money, Money, Money ...... Mooneeeeyy'. In particular they try to stay away from closely related terms of wealth or finance, and zero in on why we use money as a concept of value and they psychological aspects of our interactions with it. As usual at the beginning, there are the Mere Mortal Moments of 'Upon reaching homeostasis we tend to complain, not realising how far we have come and things have changed' & 'What you do is what you will become and/or what you will achieve'. The first part of the conversation revolves around defining 'money' and the difference between hard money and fiat money. They then each go through their own stories of how they behaved psychologically with it and how that has changed over time (in brief, going from a more scarcity mindset closer to one of abundance). Finally ending with an assertion of the importance of budgeting as well as some other psychological ways of viewing your own relationship to it.As mentioned in the video, find below a link to Ray Dalio's 30 minute video on the economic system (a truly great watch):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHe0b...Support the show

S1 Ep 45Episode #36 - Life After Coronavirus

Full

In this episode Juan and Kyrin discuss 'Life After Coronavirus'. As the restrictions around the globe start to slow down, we all find ourselves looking ahead and thinking 'what will come next?'. The forced working from home has opened a lot of people's eyes to what sort of lifestyle is possible and the inherent unproductive time spent commuting (an especial dislike of Kyrin) as well as the environmental improvements that have been witnessed over the past couple of months. Both Mere Mortals predict there will be some small short-term changes but that while scary, the Coronavirus is unlikely to have long-term impacts that in 10 years time we could say were caused directly by this pandemic. Human nature will remain unchanged from this (the good and the bad) and while we have hope that this time is the perfect opportunity for some genuine introspection, it is unlikely to be widespread. So, we keep trucking on. As always, we hope you enjoy!Support the show
