Is there a better, utilitarian form of administering justice than the system of retributive justice? In this themed episode Juan and Kyrin discuss the topic of 'Restorative Justice'. The basic principle of restorative justice is to repair the harm caused by criminal behaviour, rather than the retributive justice system of ensuring that people get what they deserve (i.e., punishment). This usually involves a meeting between the victim and offender with the aim of making amends for the harm and enabling reintegration of the parties into their communities.As part of the discussion the Mere Mortals crew also dive into: real life examples of how restorative justice is applied, whether the principle benefit is for the victim or offender, the empathetic requirements for the system to actually work and some reasons downsides of its application. Where does the responsibility of doctors lie, to reduce short-term pain or to increase the probability of long-term rehabilitation? This is one of the questions Juan and Kyrin ponder in this themed episode of 'Pain'. What is the difference between shame & guilt? Find out within this themed episode, as Juan and Kyrin discuss the topic of 'Guilt'. Guilt is an emotional experience that occurs when a person believes (accurately or not) that they have compromised their own standards of conduct or violated universal moral standards. It can come in different forms (individual, socially imposed, collective, guilty pleasure, etc.,) but we all know that heart wrenching feeling of having done something wrong. However, guilt should not be viewed universally as something only negative. It is helpful in knowing where are your own & others moral boundaries, and can be an impetus for change. That being said it is not something to seek out for it's own sake. A recommendation from Kyrin to help avoid acting in a way that will later induce guilt is to become clearer of the boundaries of your responsibilities and to behave less selfishly. Can you have passion for a pursuit without a struggle? This is one of many questions posed in this special outdoors episode of 'Passion'. Funnily enough the etymology of the word derives from the latin 'pati', which roughly translates to 'that which must be endured', a different impression from the passion talked about nowadays. For this episode we focused solely on the perceived positive interpretation of the word, such as following one's own passion.Unfortunately just having a passion and following it is not enough to lead a good life. Examples such as Jeffrey Skilling and Elizabeth Holmes (of Enron and Theranos notoriety) exist of individuals with a passion but were willing to trample over moral boundaries in the process. On the flip side, following your inner calling can lead to a life that is amazing, despite the innate suffering. We hope the viewer finds their passion and fulfil it to its limit. In this episode Juan and Kyrin discuss 'Life After Coronavirus'. As the restrictions around the globe start to slow down, we all find ourselves looking ahead and thinking 'what will come next?'. The forced working from home has opened a lot of people's eyes to what sort of lifestyle is possible and the inherent unproductive time spent commuting (an especial dislike of Kyrin) as well as the environmental improvements that have been witnessed over the past couple of months.Both Mere Mortals predict there will be some small short-term changes but that while scary, the Coronavirus is unlikely to have long-term impacts that in 10 years time we could say were caused directly by this pandemic. Human nature will remain unchanged from this (the good and the bad) and while we have hope that this time is the perfect opportunity for some genuine introspection, it is unlikely to be widespread.
