S1 Ep 233Why Can't I Break Bad Habits? (Episode #118 - Habits)
FullWhy are habits so strong and so hard to break? In this themed episode Juan and I discuss the topic of 'Habits'. We start off as usual with a definition and a quick dive into whether it is useful to talk about habits in the subconscious or conscious domain. Us Mere Mortals have many habits (good and bad) so we go over some of our favourites and ones that we would like to start implementing in the future. If you are interested in this topic then a great book to read is 'The Power of Habit' by Charles Duhigg. He outlines the fundamental 3 step loop of habits; the cue, routine and reward. These form the basis of the tremendous amount of unconscious actions that we take daily. To finish off the discussion we chat about Kaizen (the Japanese art of small continuous improvement), whether it is useful to think about habits on the fundamental level, the keystone habits that we don't compromise on and why you shouldn't be actively influencing others to create better habits. S1 Ep 224Gratitude Doesn't Come Easily (Episode #115 - Gratitude)
FullIn this themed episode Juan and Kyrin discuss the topic of 'Gratitude'. As usual they kick off with their MMM's before defining the word. Being thankful doesn't seem to come easily to most people and a lot of the language tends to reflect this. It somewhat needs to be treated as a skill to be acquired, hence the need to 'cultivate' or 'grow' the habit of showing appreciation and returning kindness. The role that gratitude plays in religion also seems to be quite crucial. There is a strong message found in the major religions of returning kindness to one's neighbours and showing thanks to one's god for his bounty. Kyrin made the point that this is perhaps why religion helps form a cohesive social society, much like trust is what allows for economical development. Both Mere Mortals believe that introducing a gratitude practice into one's life is a useful edition and provide some tips on how they personally incorporate it. S1 Ep 208Early Signs Of A Good Engineer (Episode #109 - Engineering)
FullWhat are some of the early childhood signs that might make for a good engineer? In this themed episode Juan and Kyrin discuss the topic of 'Engineering'. Both Mere Mortals initially went to university for engineering (graduating in Civil and Mining) and subsequently worked as engineers for the early part of their careers. This episode covered their experiences at university, in the workplace and what it is like to be an engineer. The discussion starts off with indications in high school that suggested an aptitude for this profession: naturally good at maths, interest in mega-structures and buildings, enjoying problem solving and a desire to see things 'add up' nicely. For their first years in uni, both studied hard and tell of their moments of joy, frustration and learning. The most important learning coming from university was the value of fundamental engineering concepts and discarding the information that was not useful in the actual workplace. The second half of the conversation centres around some of their experiences in the workplace and why they transitioned into different career paths. These include some of their worst moments as well as the funny stories that can occur on a mine site. S1 Ep 180Stress, Fear, Disorders & Health (Mere Mortals Episode #97 - Anxiety)
FullA more serious episode this time on an issue that touches all of us in our daily lives. In this themed episode Juan and Kyrin discuss the topic of 'Anxiety'. As usual the crew starts with their Mere Mortal Moments, before diving into the definition (particularly focusing on the difference between anxiety, stress and fear). They also explore their previous disagreement from Episode #91 about whether there are any benefits to feeling anxious. The bulk of the episode then is centred around anxiety disorders, therapy and general healthcare. A quick caveat here, neither of the Mere Mortals are medical professionals and you should seek proper medical advice for any problems with anxiety you may have. Some personal stories arose such as Juan's aversion to needles and Kyrin's disconcerting experience with a local GP. The final discussion centred around the healthcare system and general therapies/remedies for fixing high anxiety levels.Timeline:0:00 - Intro & Mere Mortal Moments3:53 - Definition6:25 - The difference between anxiety, stress and fear10:41 - A Mere Mortal disagreement16:58 - Are there any benefits to anxiety?20:31 - The type of anxiety disorders25:45 - Specific phobias and Juan's fear of needles29:48 - PTSD & acute stress disorder35:40 - SSRI's and therapy42:25 - Healthcare system failings for long-term care51:08 - Mere Mortals anxiety levels53:19 - Where to find the Mere MortalsAs always, we hope you enjoy, Mere Mortals out!About Mere Mortals:Striving for excellence through life's lessons. S1 Ep 173SALLY HETHERINGTON | Mere Mortals Interview # 020
FullWelcome to another Mere Mortals interview. Sally Hetherington is an author, CEO and recipient of The Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM). Sally's backstory is of travelling to Cambodia in her 20's and learning of the negative effects of voluntourism. To make up for her own inadvertent contribution to this she began working with local Cambodians to register the charity organisation, Human and Hope Association Cambodia (HHA). This interview began with a detailed look at her backstory and the tangible effects of voluntourism on the local communities. Sally provided some interesting anecdotes of her own failures and subsequent learnings of helping on the ground. This naturally led onto the topic of volunteering in general. How one can start out making sure that good intentions are actually good and actually lead to positive benefits. To finish off Sally answered some questions on travel, goal setting and how she read 170 books in one year!Timeline:0:00 - Introduction to Sally & overview1:02 - Mere Mortal Moment2:45 - Sally's Cambodian backstory8:09 - What is voluntourism?10:54 - Frustrated with crappy resumes17:11 - The backstory of voluntourism20:24 - Empowering and supporting locals31:16 - Prioritising your volunteering role34:16 - Clarifying intentions, red flags and resilience38:40 - Managing dichotomies within the charity sector44:40 - Influential books, travel and goal setting48:13 - Reading 170 books and bookstagram52:54 - Sally's book, charity and useful linksAs always, we hope you enjoy, Mere Mortals out!Sally's Links:Charity Website: https://humanandhope.orgCharity Brand: https://hopeonpurpose.org/Sally's Website: https://www.sallyhetherington.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sallymareehetherington/About Mere Mortals:Striving for excellence through life's lessons. S1 Ep 172Put Another Shrimp On The Barbie Mate (Mere Mortals Episode #94 - Accents)
FullAre you prepared to hear some impossibly awful accent impersonations? In this themed episode Juan and Kyrin discuss the topic of 'Accents'. These are defined as 'a distinctive way of pronouncing a language, especially one associated with a particular country, area, or social class.' They differ from dialect, which a particular form of language using different words. Isolation and evolution contribute to a common baseline language developing different accents, then different dialects before transitioning into a completely different language.Juan showed his information research power this episode coming up with some doozies. These ranged from the accents apparently developed in Philadelphian sign language, waking up one day and speaking in a completely foreign accent and the changing accents of the mythical Dutch and Scottish chimpanzees.
