S1 Ep 166SAMMY & DON APPAH | Mere Mortals Interview # 019
FullSammy & Don Appah are two brothers living in London and are the hosts of 'The Family' podcast. Kyrin connected with them via Instagram and loved their mix of humorous banter with deep philosophical questionings. The brothers kindly made themselves available for a discussion on some topics that immediately jump out when listening to their podcast. The convo started off with some personal role models that have had a big impact for both Sammy and Don. This led into the commonality of the traits that they exhibit. S1 Ep 165Becoming An Eminently Qualified Human Being (Mere Mortals Episode #91 - Long-Term Goals)
FullWhat are long-term goals and why are they important? In this themed episode Juan and Kyrin discuss the topic of 'Long-Term Goals'. First of all we want to apologise for the inferior audio quality in this episode. We had some technical glitches that unfortunately were not able to be fixed to our normal standard, but felt that the listener would still receive sufficient benefit from the conversation. Rest assured, one of our long-term goals is to continually improve the Mere Mortals podcast, in terms of technical capability and conversational value. Nevertheless, we are only Mere Mortals in the end and mistakes will be made. With that said, the Mere Mortals start off the convo as usual with a definition and talking about the process of creating long-term goals. This leads into a conversation on the shared values that most humans have as well as what to do once you have your goals set. Both Kyrin and Juan then share their personal long-term goals before rounding of the chat with some additional helpful tips. This was an episode we had been excited about for a while and so hope you get some value despite the decreased audio quality. The team has just passed the 1 year anniversary of starting the podcast and we feel like we are just getting started! To start off the conversation, the Mere Mortals ask themselves if they are gullible? This leads into talking about the power of good story, with a good example of this being the flesh eating bananas taking over the world. Gullible is an sneaky word as the definition initially seems simple, but as one gets into its intricacies it seems to become less clear. The convo ends on a more philosophical note, exploring the base nature of humans and whether we need to protect ourselves from being too trusting. S1 Ep 155A Science, Pseudoscience Or Art? (Mere Mortals Episode #86 - Physiognomy)
FullCan we actually predict the innate character/personality of someone, solely based on their face? Juan and Kyrin try and answer this question in this themed episode of 'Physiognomy'. The definition of physiognomy is hard to pin down, explaining why it actually appears to be a combination of science, pseudoscience and art. The debate also gets muddled due to the underlying nature vs nurture argument that rears its head after sufficient discussion. This led to a more practical discussion on whether judging people based on their appearance is useful. Whilst we all do this to some degree or another (i.e., consciously or subconsciously) it really does appear that context is the determinant for utility. In the future we may find that this subject becomes more relevant as AI and data-driven analysis of facial features (taken from Facebook for example) allow us to statistically prove that certain people's exteriors infer a greater propensity for certain actions, whether good, bad or neutral. As always, we hope you enjoy, Mere Mortals out!Timeline:0:00 - Introduction1:14 - Mere Mortal Moments4:52 - Definition and etymology of physiognomy7:21 - Is it a science, pseudoscience or art?14:23 - Nature vs nurture and tighter definition21:13 - Judging a book by its cover, is it useful?28:12 - Context is everything33:00 - Conscious vs subconscious judging36:11 - AI and physiognomy43:54 - How to make physiognomy a real science49:09 - Trump has the eyes of a blue whale!51:26 - Outro and the physiognomy of the Mere MortalsAbout Mere Mortals:Striving for excellence through life's lessons. S1 Ep 150Using Music To Create Memories (Mere Mortals Episode #83 - Music)
FullDo you intentionally listen to a specific song/artist to recall a memorable time period? In this themed episode Juan and Kyrin discuss the topic of 'Music'. As usual the crew start of with some Mere Mortal Moments as well as the etymology and definition of the word. They then start listing some of their favourite artists and genres before diving into how music can evoke past memories and whether this is only a good technique or could potentially ruin songs.Music plays a big part in all our lives and has huge effects on us both consciously and subconsciously. Movies use soundtracks to create certain atmospheres/feelings and listening to sad music while alone or pump-up music for the gym can also have physical effects on our body and endorphins. S1 Ep 143ALEX TROLL | Mere Mortals Interview # 016
FullIt was a pleasure to welcome back Alex Troll, founder of PodUnion, a platform to listen to and host podcasts. We started off this interview talking about how to market yourself by simply providing value and letting that speak for itself. We then transitioned to transformative innovations that will change the world of the future. Alex predicts that the instant ability to translate between languages will open up a huge new space for ideas to spread and cross over barriers previously blocked by the inability to understand one another. This got us onto language formation and how much we actually use symbols and text nowadays. Despite that, there are still tremendous differences between languages (English, Spanish, German, Pidgin, etc.,) and these also result in significant cultural differences (the assertiveness of Germans for example). We end the interview by speaking about committing to something 100% and how to find fulfilment by following your interests and finding satisfaction. Alex is an awesome guy and we love everything he is doing over at PodUnion. If you like listening to podcasts download his app from the app store and give it a try. Also connect with him via any of the links below. Once again, thanks for listening, we really appreciate it. This tends to be a deleterious change and there are in fact numerous benefits to gaining your oxygen nasally versus through the mouth. The MM crew then get onto techniques (Wim Hof method/Valsalva) as well as their own personal experiences of altering their breath while swimming, exercising and practising breath holds. The body has some amazing adaptations that allow longer hold times (such as the dive reflex) and it is actually possible to breathe through an oxygen-rich liquid called Perflurocarbons. The conversation is ended with some pragmatic outcomes and some fantastic news on the podcast front. The Mere Mortals crew then explored into unknown territory. What will change if/when we colonise Mars? What would humans do if we were the invaders (no high hopes over here)? S1 Ep 123Is Common Sense Really That Common? (Mere Mortals Episode #71 - Common Sense)
FullHow is common sense defined and what level/percentage of commonality is required to even be able to use this phrase? In this themed episode Juan and Kyrin discuss the topic of 'Common Sense'. Of all the themed topics to date, this was probably the hardest to define and have a sensible conversation about. Both Mere Mortals agreed with the general definition of 'sound judgement on practical matters' but also needed an extra personal addition to really make sense of it. Common sense shouldn't be confused with knowing general knowledge, specific facts or even technical know-how. It is also a mistake to say label it as something 'obvious' especially when looking at something in hindsight. Many AI researchers believe that cultivating common sense is the equivalent to human-level intelligence, but it is laughable how far that research field appears to be away from coherently expressing a simple plan of how to achieve it.Hypothetical scenarios are useful in helping to zero in on the meaning of a phrase and were used liberally throughout this conversation. Some examples included: looking both ways before crossing a street, the inappropriateness of wearing ass-less chaps to work and passing by a drowning person. Both Juan and Kyrin agreed this was the best discussion to date and hope you enjoyed it as much they did, Mere Mortals out!Support the show

FullWhat's better, a well articulated video/audio that gets the message across in a perfectly edited way.. or a slightly rougher piece of content that still gets across the message with the minimum expected quality. What's more, it depends on what context you look at it being better for. On one hand, it might be better for your target audience to have the value from the video delivered in the ideal timing, but what about from the context of being better for yourself. S1 Ep 115Striving For Excellence Through Life's Lessons (Mere Mortals Episode #68 - Excellence)
FullWhy do the Mere Mortals crew strive for excellence? In this themed episode Juan and Kyrin discuss the topic of 'Excellence'. In the dictionary, excellence is defined as "the quality being outstanding or extremely good". However both Juan and Kyrin went a bit deeper in their own personal meanings of the word. For Juan, it meant achieving a high level of competence in a figurative scale (more than 7 out of 10) as well as being known for that competence. For Kyrin, it meant achieving an internal qualitative goal that requires effort to reach (such as achieving fluency in another language). In a broader professional sense, there are different types of group achievements. These can be excellence of process (creating a model of action that works efficiently), of product (meeting the stated and implied needs of customers), of business (great market and financial performance) and of leadership (setting and enforcing the right standards). The crew finish of by musing on if there is anything beyond excellence and the type of psychosis/madness that is required to reach it.Support the show

S1 Ep 111Effectiveness vs Efficiency - 4M's Episode #29

S1 Ep 108Where Should One Direct Their Effort? (Mere Mortals Episode #65 - Effective Vs Efficient)
FullIf you could be 10% more effective or 10% more efficient, which would you prefer? In this themed episode Juan and Kyrin discuss the topic of being 'Effective Vs Efficient'. While closely related, there is actually a big difference between these two ideas. Simply put, being effective is doing the right things (goal orientated) and being efficient is doing things right (process orientated). As always, the Mere Mortal crew begin with their Mere Mortal Moment of the week and really hone in on the definition of these two words (with some practical examples for clarity).A common way of looking at the two E's is to put them in a matrix. Ideally when trying to accomplish a goal one would be effective and efficient, but sometimes there are trade off's that need to be made. When starting or learning a new venture (such as goal setting or swimming) you will by default be ineffective and inefficient so will have to decide which to tackle first (or even how to do it simultaneously). From a work perspective, the approach and emphasis will also change depending on the context and the hierarchical position of the person. Senior executives tend to focus on the results (i.e., being effective) while the lower managers are more interested in the day to day process (i.e., being efficient).Taking a step back from the topic is interesting as there are times when it is neither useful to think in terms of effectiveness or efficiency. Both require a forward looking mindset, with varying degrees of time length applied. But sometimes adopting this mindset can actually take the joy and passion out of a pursuit. To quote Kyrin, "I wouldn't want to efficiently speed read books nor try to effectively gain the most value out of them. I gain some benefits from reading but the actual moment to moment experience is just as important."To sum up, Juan had this to say. "Be efficient and be effective where you need it to be, thinking about it from a goal setting perspective. And sometimes you just need to enjoy yourself in activities."
