The Catholic Home, Episode 2: Lent in the Catholic Kitchen

Lent is the perfect time to add some simple yet tasty recipes to your meatless repertoire. So grab your apron; pop on your chef's hat and listen as guests Justin Soeder and Raquel Garcia De Alba share recipes and cooking advice with host Wendy Haught in this second episode of The Catholic Home. Justin's enthusiasm for seafood practically vibrates the airwaves as he guides listeners through the steps of preparing one of his favorite salmon dishes, then quickly moves on to his amazing Kung Pao shrimp. But he doesn't stop there. He delivers shopping and cooking tips as well, and even takes a little detour to explain why Tilapia is not his favorite fish. Raquel, basking in the glow of old Mexico, where family get-togethers and baptism parties abound, and street vendors daily ply their wares, brings that comforting warmth to the show as she shares her aunt's Caribbean Black Beans and Rice recipe as well as her grandmother's Capirotada recipe, a Mexican bread pudding traditionally served on Good Friday. Variations of Capirotada have been served in Mexico since at least the 1400s. Raquel also delights the culinary imagination with fresh and easy Tostadas Sincillas. Tons of information is shared on cookware, resources, philosophy, and options for learning to cook and/or simply improve your skills in the kitchen. There is a little bit of everything in this show--laughter, reminiscing, and even a cameo appearance from Messi, the barking Schnauzer, who is named after the Argentinian soccer player for FC Barcelona. (FC stand for Futbol Club.) If you've never heard a dog bark in Spanish, this is your golden opportunity! Popes Against Modern Errors, Episode 7: Pascendi (Part 1)

In this first episode on Pascendi Dominici Gregis of Pope St Pius X, His Excellency Bishop Donald Sanborn joins us to provide a commentary on this most significant of Papal encyclicals. Written to expose and condemn the doctrines of the modernists at the start of the 20th century, this encyclical is the defining document of this great Pope Saint’s life and perhaps the most important document to have proceeded from the Vatican in hundreds of years. It served as an alarm call and a condemnation of those most pernicious adversaries of the Church who seek to utterly overthrow Christianity itself. This show is the first of a total of 3 shows to be recorded on Pascendi. There is much more to follow. Popes Against Modern Errors, Episode 6: Rerum Novarum (Part 2)

In this second episode on Rerum Novarum, His Excellency Bishop Donald Sanborn completes his commentary on this great encyclical concerning the use of capital and labour. Written to counter the rise of socialism all over Europe and in the United States, Rerum Novarum reads like a text book in moral theology for both employers and employees alike. The show follows on from the previous show and particularly expounds the Church’s solicitude for the poor. It rounds off and completes all of the subjects discussed in Part 1. Popes Against Modern Errors, Episode 5: Rerum Novarum (Part 1)

In this first of two episodes, His Excellency Bishop Donald Sanborn discusses the first half of this great encyclical on the use of capital and labour. Written to counter the rise of socialism all over Europe and in the United States, Rerum Novarum reads like a text book in moral theology for both employers and employees alike. The show discusses the encyclical in both its historical and contemporary context and goes some way to explain the governmental and economic system under which the world currently toils. Popes Against Modern Errors, Episode 4: Libertas Praestantissimum

"Liberty" is the theme of the encyclical covered in this month's episode of Popes Against the Modern Errors. This is a masterful teaching encyclical by His Holiness, Pope Leo XIII, this longest of the writings we have covered this season. His Holiness explains the definition of liberty, its relationship to good and evil, the relation of the intellect and the will to liberty, and all the implications that follow not just for good society and government, but the importance of the relationship of Church and State for a harmonious society. Host Stephen Heiner walks through the encyclical with Bishop Donald Sanborn, the regular guest for this series, and relates the timeless points of this work to the timely questions of today. Popes Against Modern Errors, Episode 3: Diuturnum Illud

Do today's Catholics really have a proper sense of “right government”? While the secular world of today and the Vatican II sect in the last 50 years have done much to destroy order, the sense and reasons behind governance, and the proper and Catholic attitude of obedience, all such issues were addressed in 1881 by His Holiness Pope Leo XIII in Diuturnum Illud. Listen as His Excellency Bishop Donald Sanborn guides listeners through this masterful encyclical, discussing the roles and duties of rulers, the Church’s positions on forms of government and elections, where power truly lies (hint: not with the people), a reflection on the Holy Roman Empire, and a reminder that the Church has no ambitions to rule temporally, only to ensure temporal safety and happiness en route to the most important goal of this life: eternal life with God. Popes Against Modern Errors, Episode 2: Quanta Cura and the Syllabus

After a bit of absence due to a sickness, His Excellency Bishop Donald Sanborn returns to the airwaves to discuss the next encyclical in this series, His Holiness Pope Pius IX's Quanta Cura and the accompanying Syllabus of Errors. Bishop Sanborn begins by discussing the reign of the Pope in broad strokes and then sets the encyclical within a historical context. He also goes on to discuss its infallibility before digging into the text. Join host Stephen Heiner as he walks through this important Catholic document with the Bishop and goes over a number of condemned propositions...propositions accepted by both the world and the Novus Ordo Sect. Popes Against Modern Errors, Episode 1: Mirari Vos

When asked to name 2-3 of his "favorite" encyclicals to be covered this season, with an exception for Pascendi, Bishop Sanborn named Mirari Vos. Coincidentally, it is also the first encyclical we will examine this season. In writing Mirari Vos, Pope Gregory XVI was dealing with the ongoing fallout of the French Revolution and the "restorations" that had happened superficially, but had not gone down to the root. He addresses many errors prevalent at the time that are simply part of what we live with today: so-called "freedom of conscience," "freedom of the press," and the error of indifferentism: that any religion can save you. Enjoy His Excellency's timely and relevant commentary on timeless Magisterial writing. Popes Against Modern Errors, Episode 0: Introduction

New for Season 4 of Restoration Radio, Stephen Heiner will sit down with His Excellency, Bishop Donald Sanborn and discuss a number of encyclicals from the time of Pope Gregory XVI all the way to Pope Pius XII. While not intended to be a comprehensive analysis of each encyclical, nevertheless each episode will examine important points of each encyclical both within the context in which they were written and what pertains to us in our present time. But before we can examine these encyclicals, in the introductory episode the Bishop explains to us how encyclicals originated, to what degree(s) they are considered infallible, and who should study them (hint: you!). While this series will be subscriber-only, meaning, a la carte downloads will not be available, this episode, as is the case with all "zero" origin episodes, is free as a way of previewing the show for the season. S4, Devotions with Bishop Dolan, Ep8: Devotions in General and Devotions of Mexico

Restoration Radio is excited to welcome back His Excellency, Bishop Daniel Dolan, to Devotions with Bishop Dolan from Season 2. In this first episode back on Season 4, His Excellency starts out by exploring and defining what is a true devotion. Building upon this solid definition, Bishop Dolan provides an overview of some of the general aspects of devotions. Guided by His Excellency, the show delves into the heart of what motive a Catholic should have when praying a devotion. To help listeners avoid the various pitfalls, His Excellency clearly lays out the guiding principles and misconceptions to be wary of when beginning a devotion. Once a clear idea of true devotion is enunciated upon, His Excellency shares with the listeners common devotions he has discovered in his travels to Mexico among the various regions and villages. In Mexico, the people, contrary to the United States, have continued the many public devotions which existed before Vatican II. It is fascinating to hear how much of the Mexican public life over the course of the liturgical year is surrounded by various public devotions illustrating the feast or current liturgical season. Join us as His Excellency, Bishop Daniel Dolan, pastor of St. Gertrude the Great Catholic Church in West Chester, Ohio and new host James Schroepfer, as they review very pertinent points on devotions and explore the spiritual landscape of Mexico. S4, Clerical Conversations, Ep19: ISIS and Mohammedanism

On this month's episode of Clerical Conversations, we follow-up on the discussions from last month about the "Je suis Charlie", phenomenon, and focus more closely on Mohammedanism and the most recent incarnation of the Islamist jihad in I.S.I.S. Looking at the history and teachings of Islam, His Lordship and Father will instruct the listener on the false notions preached by the Novus Ordo sect and modern society that "we all worship the same god" and that Islam is a "religion of peace". Especially in following the history is Islam, we will see that the so-called "extremists" of I.S.I.S. are actually the true followers of Mohammed. Join host Nicholas Wansbutter as he discusses these topics with His Lordship, Bishop Daniel Dolan and Father Anthony Cekada of St. Gertrude the Great Catholic Church in West Chester, Ohio on this month’s episode of Clerical Conversations. Episode Notes 1. The article from The Atlantic, referenced by Fr. Cekada may be found here: http://www.theatlantic.com/features/archive/2015/02/what-isis-really-wants/384980/ 2. During this episode, reference was made to Islam taking on the beliefs of Christian heresies such as the gospel of Barnabas-- which says Judas replaced Christ at Calvary. According to this wikipedia article, it was Simon of Cyrene instead of Judas who replaced Our Lord according to this heresy, which has its origins in a Gnostic "gospel"/heresy of Basilides (that did not survive but was written against by St. Irenaeus.) 3. The book referenced during the show by Nicholas Wansbutter about the history of Islam is Sword of the Prophet by Serge Trifkovic. S4, Clerical Conversations, Ep18: From Charles Martel to Charlie Hebdo

On this month's episode of Clerical Conversations, we launch an in-depth discussion about the recent events of 7 January 2015 in Paris, France that resulted in the murder of twelve individuals at the headquarters of the scandalous French satirical magazine publication entitled Charlie Hebdo. Modern Western society has had a near universal outcry about this event, galvanizing their outrage by uniting with their contemporaries and demonstrating in the streets of Paris and indeed worldwide while holding signs, running ads, and newspaper editorials about the sacrosanct notion of "freedom of speech" and "freedom of the press." Looking at the many questionable aspects about the event itself, His Lordship and Father will (once again) instruct the listener on the false notion of the revolutionary principles that the French Revolution of 1789 gave to the world - namely that of freedom of speech, freedom of the press, liberty, equality, fraternity and a French society that has divorced itself from its once beautiful status as the 'eldest daughter of the Church' to one that is now a Godless revolutionary disgrace. What is a Catholic to think about these events and what should our response be to those around us who tote their Je suis Charlie signs? Why do these events like that of early January 2015 continue to happen? Why are there deep and pointed recurring themes in each one of these events? Who benefits and what purpose do these events serve? When one juxtaposes the time of Charles Martel to that of Charlie Hebdo, it is truly astonishing to see the utterly pitiful state of affairs that France and Western civilization as a whole finds itself in today. Join host Nicholas Wansbutter as he discusses these topics with His Lordship, Bishop Daniel Dolan and Father Anthony Cekada of St. Gertrude the Great Catholic Church in West Chester, Ohio on this month’s episode of Clerical Conversations. S4, Clerical Conversations, Ep17: Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms

Clerical Conversations returns to begin Season 4 by discussing several topics near and dear to the hearts of Catholics. Bishop Daniel Dolan and Father Anthony Cekada share their many decades of pastoral experience and discuss the proper Catholic approach/attitude to and proper enjoyment of, in sequence, gambling, alcohol, tobacco, and firearms. What is a Catholic to think about partaking in games of chance, casinos, or upping the ante at a friendly poker game by placing a wager? How do we as Catholics living in the world today look at such things as the consumption of alcohol and just exactly where is the line that must be drawn when enjoying the beverage of one's choice? At what age should children be allowed to start consuming alcohol and what reasoning is given for that answer? Moving on to the great modern "evil" of tobacco, we place our conversation in contrast to today's secular mortal sin of tobacco use. We will talk about the historical relationship the Church had with tobacco use, how we can apply that to our lives today, some of the differences between then and now, and why society at large has turned its back on and its ire towards tobacco. We will examine why it is that our world has demonized cigarettes, cigars, pipes, snuff, and even e-cigarettes! Lastly we will discuss firearms, the proper Catholic understanding of them as a tool for recreation as well as self-defense, and some of the hidden agendas wrapped up in the possession, usage, and symbolism of them in today's culture. Catholic Spirituality, Episode 7: The Nature of Christian Perfection

In this episode, we begin the second section, Christian Perfection, in Royo Marín's Theology of Christian Perfection. We have now completed the first section, Doctrinal Principles. When we speak about Christian perfection, we are speaking about a supernatural perfection, an elevation of man, and the perfection of man as he is elevated to a higher order. Christian perfection consists especially in the perfection of charity, the supernatural love of God and neighbor. Christian perfection consists integrally in the elicited act of charity and in the acts of the other infused virtues imperated by charity which are of precept. Catholic Spirituality, Episode 6: Supernatural Growth

Father Nicolás Despósito continues in this episode with Royo Marín's Theology of Christian Perfection Chapter 6: Supernatural Growth. Sanctifying grace is meant to increase and develop in our souls. God alone is the efficient cause of the increase of our supernatural life. Ordinarily, the increase of grace is produced in two ways: ex opere operato by the sacraments, and ex opere operantis by supernatural meritorious acts and by the impetratory efficacy of prayer. Catholic Spirituality, Episode 5: The Gifts of the Holy Ghost

This month on Catholic Spirituality, Father Nicolás Despósito continues with Royo Marín's Theology of Christian Perfection Chapter 5: The Gifts of the Holy Ghost. This doctrine of the gifts of the Holy Ghost is very important. It is important for us to understand what the gifts do, how they operate, and their function with regard to our sanctification and salvation. The gifts of the Holy Ghost are necessary for the perfection of the infused virtues and are necessary for salvation. Catholic Spirituality, Episode 3: Indwelling of the Blessed Trinity

In this episode Father Nicolás Despósito covers the third chapter of Royo Marín's Theology of Christian Perfection. The topic treated is the Indwelling of the Blessed Trinity in the soul of the just. Sacred Scripture is very clear: "If anyone love Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him" (John 14:23). What is the purpose of the divine indwelling? What are the practical consequences of this sublime mystery? Catholic Spirituality, Episode 2: Sanctifying Grace

In this episode Father Nicolás Despósito covers the second chapter of Royo Marín's Theology of Christian Perfection. The topics treated are: sanctifying grace, its nature and effects, actual grace, its nature and functions. The supernatural life is analogous to the natural life, and this is clearly seen in the four elements that constitute life. A living subject (the supernatural living subject is the human soul), a formal principle of life (the supernatural principle of life is sanctifying grace), the faculties (in the supernatural order, those are the virtues and gifts of the Holy Ghost) and operations (in the supernatural order, those are the operations of the virtues and gifts). These four elements constitute a supernatural vital organism. Why is this important? Because, in order to gain eternal life, we must first be elevated to the supernatural life through grace. Natural virtue is not sufficient. Catholic Spirituality, Episode 1: The End

On this episode, Father Nicolás Despósito covers the first chapter of Royo Marín's Theology of Christian Perfection: The End. The consideration of purpose is the first thing required in the study of any dynamic work. The glory of God and our sanctification are two modalities of one single end. Father explains the distinction between the intrinsic and the extrinsic glory of God and how the ultimate end of the Christian life is to glorify God. Even the soul's salvation and sanctification must be sought for the greater glory of God. What is the difference between the perfection of the wayfarer and the perfection of the blessed in glory? The union of the blessed with God in glory presupposes three distinct elements in the souls of those who enjoy the beatific vision: sanctifying grace, charity and the light of glory. The perfection of the wayfarer consists on the first two elements, something which should give us an idea of the importance of grace and virtue on the life of Catholics. The Anti-Modernist Reader, Episode 4: Resisting the Pope, Sedevacantism and Frankenchurch

In this episode we are joined by Father Anthony Cekada to discuss an article written in 2005 in response to an attack on sedevacantism published in The Remnant. Father Cekada was asked to produce a rebuttal in no more than 3,000 words to a seven pointed attack on the only truly Catholic response to the current crisis in the Church. The result was a brief, pointed and refined defense of Father’s position based on insurmountable moral principles and backed up, as always, by theologians, canonists, Popes and saints. Father Cekada takes us through this document whilst outlining and explaining the arguments. The Anti-Modernist Reader, Episode 3: Traditionalists, Infallibility and the Pope

In this episode Father Anthony Cekada joins Matthew Gaskin to discuss this significant article in the history of opposition to Vatican II first published in 1995 and again in 2006. As part of True Restoration's Anti-Modernist Reader series we delve into this article to address: the important issue of why Catholics rejected the Vatican II changes, the errors and evils of the Vatican II sect, the inability of the true Catholic Church to give evil doctrine, discipline and liturgy to the faithful, and why the loss of ecclesiastical office applies just as much to a Pope as to any other member of the Church. Backed by notable and respected theologians and canonists including Saint Robert Bellarmine, and further supported by Popes, Father Cekada lays out the sedevacantist position clearly and logically for Catholics to understand. The heresies of Joseph Ratzinger (AKA Benedict XVI) in particular are clearly laid bare so that nobody may labour under the illusion that this man is, in fact, a Catholic. The Anti-Modernist Reader, Episode 2: Resistance and Indefectibility

In this episode our new host Matthew Gaskin is joined by Bishop Donald Sanborn to discuss an article that his Excellency authored back in 1991. The article described the three main groups of opposition to Vatican II: the Ecclesia Dei group, the SSPX group and the sedevacantist group. Despite being 24 years old the article is as relevant today as it was when it was written and so, as part of True Restoration's Anti-Modernist Reader series, we revisit it now for some in-depth analysis. Both the Ecclesia Dei solution and the sedevacantist solution are clear and easy to understand. The SSPX solution is more difficult to understand and so we cover it here in greater detail. His Excellency discusses all three positions, their fundamental principles and the logical conclusions that Catholics must draw when they are confronted with the application of Catholic dogma. This is a must-listen show for those Catholics pondering the problem of the Novus Ordo in the time of Bergoglio. It is also particularly pertinent in a time when the SSPX is making ever stronger overtures for a reconciliation with modernist Rome. Root of the Rot, Episode 6: The French Revolution (Part 2)

This month's episode is the follow-up to last month's episode focusing on the French Revolution. The physical horrors of the Revolution behind us, we now focus on the institutionalization of the Revolution in the man known to history as Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. A man who truly played both sides, he managed to co-opt revolutionary ideals while imposing a draconian autocracy previously unseen even under Louis XIV. He tricked the Pope into coming to crown him emperor before snatching the crown himself and imposed a Concordat that did preserve rights for the Church...but at what cost? His Excellency Bishop Daniel Dolan will, as always, unpack these events for us before leading us into a long and difficult (nothing worth learning is easy) explication of all the various "isms" that had been incubating since the Protestant Revolt in various Masonic lodges but post-Revolution, vomited upon the world. These include: Transcendentalism Evolutionism Rationalism Positivism Pragmatism Liberalism Socialism Anarchism Nationalism Internationalism Without forgetting the theological problems of: Rationalism Modernism Reunionism Americanism His Excellency ends his discussion with Stephen Heiner by looking at Romanticism and Impressionism in art and music. Root of the Rot, Episode 5: The French Revolution (Part 1)

The first episode of Root of the Rot after the midseason break is quite possibly the most important we have ever done. It discusses the French Revolution in its inception and execution until the Napoleonic era. We start by examining the definition of revolution as it is defined by Father Denis Fahey, C.S.Sp., what it does to the social order of society, and how it affects both Church and State. We also examine the unique perspective of Americans, as the young United States played an integral role in inspiring the French Revolution. The new French "values" of "liberty, equality, and fraternity" are also well dissected and examined. Sure, they sound nice, but what do they really mean? How have these principles of the French Revolution permeated into the modern mind as dogmas, and what do these principles actually mean once one scratches the surface beyond their lofty sound and seemingly acceptable aims? The Declaration of the Rights of Man, another Masonic triumph in the vein of "liberty, equality, and fraternity," is also looked at, as well as the role of Freemasonry and Judaism. As Pope Leo XIII wrote in his encyclical letter Tametsi Futura Prospicientibus: "The world has heard enough about the "rights of man." Let it hear something about the rights of God." (cf. Tametsi, #13, 1900) Join us as His Excellency, Bishop Daniel Dolan, pastor of St. Gertrude the Great Catholic Church in West Chester, Ohio and host Stephen Heiner review this important part of history that has produced so many effects that modern man still feels today. Root of the Rot, Episode 2: The Beginnings of Modernity (1274-1517 A.D.)

On the last episode of Root of the Rot, we looked at the flourishing and growth of Christendom from its legalization, then endorsement, from the soon-to-die Roman Empire. In this episode, we will examine what happened when kings were more interested in the comings and goings of this life instead of the life to come, the change in art, architecture, and music. We will then look at the dark shadow that Martin Luther cast across all of Christendom. It is extremely important for Catholics today to understand that the problems in both the world and the Church did not simply begin with Vatican II, rather they go very far back in time and marched forward to where we are today. Trad Reviews, Episode 6: Becket, Poetry of Fr. Hopkins, and Puerto Rico

On the month's episode of Trad Reviews, we will be reviewing the very popular Catholic movie Becket, the subject of poetry and particularly that of Father Gerard Manley Hopkins, S.J. (1844-1889) and closing out with a review of the board game Puerto Rico. We begin with a review of Becket, a film that has been nominated for 12 Academy Awards and the brilliant acting by the two leading actors Richard Burton (St. Thomas Becket) and Peter O'Toole (King Henry VIII) who capture their roles brilliantly in this screenplay. We discuss our reactions to the screenplay and take a close look at the individual reflections we had after watching this movie: what does it tell us about that period of time in world history? What does it say about today? What lessons in the faith does this movie illustrate to us? What is the historical accuracy of this film? And lastly, can we recommend this movie? Normally we review a book, but in this segment, we engage the subject of poetry. We introduce our show guest for this segment, Bishop Daniel Dolan, who will discuss the impact of poetry. We chose poetry because it is important to examine poetry as part of an examined Catholic life. Our first choice was not necessarily the easiest place to start: Father Gerard Manley Hopkins, S.J. wrote poetry difficult both in meter and in meaning. His Excellency and Stephen examine a few of Fr. Hopkins' poems, notably, God's Grandeur and The Blessed Virgin Compared to the Air We Breathe as well as a mention the famous Wreck of the Deutschland. His Excellency also takes time to instruct the listener that poetry is meant to be heard, not simply read. In our final segment of this episode, Nicholas Wansbutter guides our listeners through the board game Puerto Rico. Another "Euro game" in the tradition of Settlers of Catan, Puerto Rico's object revolves around building up the Spanish Colony during the time of the Age of Exploration. Unlike Settlers of Catan, there is not as much player-to-player interaction and it can also be played in about one hour. We hope you enjoy this episode as host Stephen Heiner is joined by guests Nicholas Wansbutter and Justin Soeder as they give their impressions of the three topics for this month's Trad Reviews. Trad Reviews, Episode 5: Divergent, Small is Beautiful, and Settlers of Catan

On the month's episode of Trad Reviews, we will be discussing the recent hit movie Divergent, the classic 1970s book Small is Beautiful by E.F. Schumacher, and the board game Settlers of Catan. In what seems to be a flurry of dystopian movies coming out of Hollywood these days, we examine this movie which has gripped teens internationally in a similar way as the Hunger Games did. We will take a deep look into the problems with the movie, the subliminal and not-so-subliminal messages contained in the movie, and why this movie cannot be recommended for teens - but can be used as a tool for mature adults and parents alike to see in crystal clear focus the utter banality of the teen culture today and what message the modern world is selling to today's teenager. We see the usual players at work in these films pushing U.N. agendas on everything from equality of the sexes, to women in combat, to government controlling every aspect of one's life. We hope you find this review objective and critical at the same time. We then move on to the book Small is Beautiful - A Study of Economics as if People Mattered bya2 E.F. Schumacher. There have been recent reviews swirling around the internet of this book, and we take a look at it from a Catholic perspective. In an age where the term "Catholic Economics" seems to mean anything from classical distributism to modern marxism, we look at the main thrust of the book and the principles Schumacher espouses. Keep in mind that Schumacher converted to 1970s Catholicism, so this inspired much of his work. While not offering an entirely positive view of the book, we feel it is a worthwhile read for Catholics wanting an insight into Economics from a point of view they are not used to in this global economy. Lastly, we discuss the wildly popular "euro" board game: The Settlers of Catan. For those who are not familiar with this game, you really should be. Nicholas will lay out the basic strategy of the game and then everyone will chime in to give their impression of why this game is so fantastic. We will talk about why strategy based board games are not only great entertainment, but also provide aspects of strategy that the typical American board games do not. We hope you enjoy this episode as host Stephen Heiner is joined by guests Nicholas Wansbutter and Justin Soeder as they give their impressions of the three topics for this month's Trad Reviews. Trad Reviews, Episode 4: J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit

On the month's episode of Trad Reviews, we will be talking about the perennial classic works of J.R.R. Tolkien Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. We will take a deep look at these novels, how they present the central themes, some of the extremely few criticisms of the work, as well as dispelling some myths and misunderstandings associated with them. A close look will be given to the central characters in the novels and the lessons learned from each of them. From a Catholic perspective, it is obvious that Tolkien's deep Catholic faith played a central role in these works, and we will explain how. Additionally, we will compare and contrast the novels with the Hollywood series adaptations by Peter Jackson and discuss whether or not the silver screen versions of these does justice to the novels. Lastly, we will close with a look at the Lord of the Rings board game and why the one we chose to discuss is worth looking into for wholesome entertainment. Join us as host and honorary Hobbit Nicholas Wansbutter lights up some pipe weed and gives his thoughts on Tolkien's works and why they are considered essential reading. Trad Reviews, Episode 3: Lord of the World, I Confess, & Chess

On this month's episode of Trad Reviews, it's all about some old and new "classics" today at TradReviews. We will discuss Msgr. Robert Hugh Benson's famous novel Lord of the World, Alfred Hitchcock's film I Confess, and the classic game of chess. If you have not read Msgr. Benson's works, this show will be a worthy primer into his most famous novel, one that if read through the eyes of the faith, provides a sobering parallel to the world in which we live today and a very plausible scenario for the rise of the antichrist. We will take a look into Hitchcock the director, his style, his vision for bringing to the screen a story in a distinctly unique manner and what he provided to the viewer. Host Stephen Heiner will talk about the importance of these topics and what should be kept in mind when reading, viewing, or playing. Join us on this episode of Trad Reviews. Trad Reviews, Episode 2: Introduction to the Devout Life, Ben-Hur, Monopoly

On this month's episode of Trad Reviews, we will be discussing St. Francis de Sales' 1609 masterpiece Introduction to the Devout Life. We will follow up with William Wyler's 1959 blockbuster Ben-Hur, and how we view this movie. No doubt that this is a classic, and we will reflect on some of the finer points that makes this movie what it is. To finish up the show, we will discuss the board game giant Monopoly, and what lessons we as Catholics can take home from this game. Most people would not give a second thought to the game itself, but is there more to this American board game icon than meets the eye? What could possibly draw scrutiny about this game? Does it shape and influence thinking about economics and commerce? Join host Stephen Heiner as he discusses and reflect upon these topics on this month's episode of Trad Reviews. S3, Flagship Show, Ep36: Confessions of a Novus Ordo Seminarian

**PARENTAL WARNING: Mature Audiences Only** On this episode of the the Flagship Show, join us for one of the most lengthy and in-depth programs we have ever done on the Restoration Radio Network. This show will introduce a gentleman who tried a vocation in multiple modernist seminaries of the Novus Ordo sect in the Archdiocese of Toronto, Canada in the 1980s, only to find out the evil and unspeakable reality behind them. Mr. John Thomson will explain in great detail the places, events, heresies, evil, unbelief, unnatural vices, modernism, Marxism, atheism, and scandal beyond imagine revealed by both seminary faculty and seminarians alike, while he stood in disbelief as he watched what he thought was the Roman Catholic Church demonstrate a complete abandonment of the Catholic religion before his very eyes. Mr. Thomson will guide the listener through the entire process, from discerning a vocational calling, to visiting the seminary, to being admitted and the process which that required, the hatred for anything other than Vatican II, the unbelieving seminary professors, the heresies taught, the abominable acts occurring, and much, much more. If you have a loved one in a Novus Ordo seminary, this episode is a must listen. He will then tell us about his time, having left the modernist seminary, in the seminaries of the Society of St. Pius X during which time, Archbishop Lefebvre died and he witnessed a tidal wave of changes after that event. Join us as host Justin Soeder and co-host Nicholas Wansbutter allow Mr. Thomson to explain his journey, and make his confessions of what he endured as a Novus Ordo Seminarian. In this month's episode of the True Restoration Flagship show, we dive into the topics of health and fitness. In what seems to be an all-too-often avoided subject, should Catholics care about taking care of their health and trying to attain a respectable level of fitness, or is this flirting with worldliness? Do we really care or know anything about what we are putting into our bodies or from where it comes? How many of us think about such things as the quality of our drinking water? We will talk about tips for reducing the costs of eating healthy and various methods to procure high quality meats such as grass-fed beef, fresh eggs, and pastured poultry pork. We will discuss briefly the paradigm shift in mindset of people and their food supply, why food & children matter and the subject of keeping a small home garden for our families to eat off of throughout the growing year. In this episode, we will talk a little about where we have been, where we are, and where we intend, by the grace of God, to go. While not all the hosts of the Restoration Radio Network were able to be present on air, we are confident that our conversation reflects their feelings as well. S3, Flagship Show, Ep32: Relocation

In the current situation brought on by the modernist heresy, you may not find yourself near a Mass that you can attend on every Sunday. This begs the question: should Catholics relocate in order to find the Mass and Sacraments? What kind of planning is involved and what sort of pitfalls should you avoid? How do you go about transferring or finding employment in a new region where you have access to the Mass and Sacraments? What fundamental principles are involved in such a move? In a day and age when Catholics are spread out across the globe, and in many cases live in isolation, this topic is one that should, at the very least, cross the minds of those who have no access to the Sacraments. Join host Stephen Heiner (who has relocated for the Mass twice) and a panel of guests who have all relocated precisely for the Mass or a traditional Catholic school as we discuss this important topic. The Liturgical Year, Episode 8: Passiontide, St. Patrick, And Valid Matter

Before the great crescendo of Lent in the Holy Triduum — Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday — the Church acts out the Gospel for Passion Sunday on that same day: "They took up stones, therefore, to cast at him. But Jesus hid Himself, and went out of the Temple." (John 8:59). This season within a season, Passiontide, commemorates the events of our Lord's sacred Passion, but does so with our Lord hidden. The crucifixes, veiled in violet, along with images of our Lady and the Saints, hide as He did. Join us in this month's episode of "The Liturgical Year" to learn how, during this two-week period of Passiontide, the sights and sounds in the churches make clear that day by day we are drawing ever closer to Calvary. We also explore the life of the patron saint of Nigeria, St. Patrick, who also happens to be the apostle of Ireland, an island nation off the west coast of Europe. St. Patrick's rapid evangelization of Ireland and his successors' warding off a return to paganism, led the "Isle of Saints and Scholars" to be responsible not only for maintaining much of Western Civilization (when much of Western Civilization could not be bothered with doing so), but for the eventual missionary conquest for Christ of much of western and northern Europe. And to think that St. Patrick wasn't even Irish... Finally, we take a look at what is required for the bread and wine ("the species") used in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. How did missionaries, in lands far away from the wheat-growing and vine-tending corners of the world — like Nigeria or Ireland — provide for valid and licit matter for the Holy Eucharist? Join us as host Joshua Gunsher talks with Fr. Charles McGuire of St. Gertrude the Great Roman Catholic Church in West Chester, Ohio, as well as priest to many mission chapels across the United States, about this upcoming season within a season, a saint, and the species. The Liturgical Year, Episode 7: Septuagesima, Saints Perpetua and Felicity

Holy Mother Church, in Her maternal care for Her children, not only gives us time to prepare for Her feasts by periods of penance, but applies gentle spurs to us to prepare even for our preparations. Never is there liturgical whiplash: the liturgical year slows down before it turns. On Easter Sunday, the peal of organs and the resounding cry of the Gloria will return after a long absence. To ready ourselves for the joy of the Man-God's conquest of death in His Resurrection, we who are bound to do so have the long penance of Lent imposed on us. And while Lent prepares us for Easter, the Church provides us even with a preparation for this extended period of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. The preparation for Lent? This is Septuagesimatide, which runs from First Vespers of Septuagesima Sunday(nine weeks before Easter) through Compline of Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent. We explore this preparation-for-the-preparation in this month's episode of "The Liturgical Year." Also in this episode, we venture into the Canon of the Mass for the saints whose feast is celebrated on March 6, Sts. Perpetua and Felicity. These martyrs, one a noblewoman and the other a slave, provide unparalleled examples of heroic and — though mothers — manly strength to win their heavenly crowns. Their story, however, is largely unique in that it was penned by St. Perpetua herself, only to be to be completed by a first-hand witness to their gruesome yet glorious martyrdoms. Join us as host Joshua Gunsher talks with Father Charles McGuire, assistant pastor of St. Gertrude the Great Catholic Church in West Chester, Ohio and priest to many mission chapels across the United States, about the upcoming season of the Liturgical Year and these two great saints in the Roman Canon. The Liturgical Year, Episode 6: St. Therese of Lisieux and the Feast of the Holy Rosary

On this month’s episode of The Liturgical Year, we reacquaint ourselves with St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the "Little Flower," whose feast day we celebrate this month. We are warned, however, that St. Thérèse is no sugary, sentimental saint: devotion to her is not mere flowers and an enigmatic smile. Devotion to her is a powerful — and even manly — way to sanctify even the most everyday tasks. October is favored with the feast day of that most quintessential of Marian devotions, the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Preached by St. Dominic against the Albigensian heresy, the Rosary plays as much a role as a tool of sanctification as a weapon against error. Consider the decisive, if not utterly unlikely Christian victory over the Mohammedans at Lepanto, in 1571. Not putting their trust in men, but in the Mother of God, the Christian fleet was buoyed up by all Christendom, which itself was directed by the Sovereign Pontiff, St. Pius V, to pray the Rosary for a victory. That victory is still commemorated annually in this month's feast. Join us as Father Charles McGuire and host Joshua Gunsher discuss these two important feast days on this month’s episode of The Liturgical Year.
