Carey Hess, Dondee Quincena, and Brian Barreto in Studio

Brian doesn't say much in this podcast... probably because he doesn't have a microphone. Carey and Dondee come in and they're already midway into a conversation that started long ago. It's about Instagram, fashion vs. glamour, staying true to yourself vs. chasing the likes, models, and much much more. It's a long one. And there are lots of references to ball gags. You'll have to listen to find out. Just letting you know in advance. Lighting...

Eww, lighting. I almost didn't upload this podcast. Not sure if I did anyone any favors by putting this out there but oh well. People (sometimes still) ask and since I generally don't talk about it, it's a nice change of pace! Okay I just listened to this and it's not terrible. I don't like it but that doesn't mean it's terrible. You get the picture. Don't Speak (Is Talking Really Necessary Part II)

A while back I asked if talking with models is really necessary for shoots? This time I break that down and why it really messes with my ability to produce images. Speaking of talking. Now that I'm doing makeup, are my pictures better? From a rapport perspective? I've always envied makeup artists for their ability to build rapport with models. But does that help me? References in this podcast: The Boat and the Model (Part II) / Is Talking Really Necessary - http://lucima.podomatic.com/entry/2015-08-04T09_30_47-07_00 I just listened to this podcast. It's pretty funny. And it contains some solid thoughts.

BenQ SW2700PT (Part I)

Some of you guys heard I was asking about new displays on the LUCIMA Facebook Workshop page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/185656974814125/) where I heard about the BenQ SW2700PT being a consumer-grade color accurate display. I decided to give it a try. Here are my initial thoughts! Here's a great review I found while I was doing some basic research: http://us.hardware.info/reviews/6564/pro-benq-sw2700pt-vs-dell-ultrasharp-up2716d-review-adobergb-battle The profile picture for this podcast is from my iPhone of the panel uniformity that I keep harping on during the latter half of this podcast.

Let Me Drive, Hibernation, The Road Ahead

I had recorded 27 minutes before I realized that I didn’t have the mixer on. FML. So this is the re-recorded podcast. I didn’t get through many of the nuances that I covered in the original. But the ideas presented in this podcast were much more structured and tighter than the other. C’est la vie. So what did I talk about? I had a shoot today. Talked about that. It was a good shoot. Model let me “drive”. Talked about making decisions in general and being in control. I then segued into shooting more and how things have been better for me. I covered the three main reasons that I could imagine would explain what happened when I stopped shooting and the 2 main reasons that explain why I started shooting again. It’s just personal insight into my own ebb and flow. I don’t think I made any references in this podcast so there are no links. Unless I made a mistake, then tell me :)

Momentum Beauty Confidence

In this podcast I talk about shooting. A lot more than usual. Booking nearly every day of the week and then filling in the drop outs. Instagram. Life after Keith. Understanding beauty. And how to shoot with confidence. Yeah, it's a lot! There were a couple links I promised. Not sure if it was this podcast or the last podcast but unfortunately one of the specific links is now gone (had to take it down). Those of you that saw it know what I'm talking about. It was a before an after video of a closeup/beauty/head shot. I don't like having those things floating out there so it had to go. Oh and what the hell with the podcast pic right? Since I can't show you the before and after beauty pic, this is the next best thing. I found this gem in my "successes" folder where I keep all my awesome retouches. The story behind this beauty is that my buddies were messing around in group chat and superimposed my friend's head onto some web dude's body. Except it wasn't done well. iPhone app and rough copy-paste-with-your-fingers-type-work you know? The coloring was off and the lighting was wrong but it had immense potential. I took that original image (not shown here) and refined it into the diamond that you see here. Yeah, I know beauty. Indecision (Drowning in Edits Part III... kinda)

A followup to the previous two-part series about drowning in edits. All of the following questions are addressed as they pertain to photography/retouching. Have you ever been indecisive? How to your curb indecision? What's the source of indecision? How do I learn to be more decisive? Are there any benefits from indecision? Isn't a little indecision good for "flexibility" during shoots? Any parables from your past? So what do you want us to do? Skin Retouching

Photographer Cooper Norland visits the studio and I put him on the mic. He asks me a few questions he's always wanted to hear me speak about on the podcast. This is a segment from the conversation that addresses skin retouching and the different techniques particularly frequency separation and why I don't use it anymore.

Special Guest Jennifer Steinman

On this podcast we have director, producer and editor Jennifer Steinman. In our search for epic sports documentaries we stumbled across Jennifer's film, Desert Runners. Being of the Ironman discipline, I instantly gravitated towards the idea of running my legs off over hundreds of miles a week in four different deserts around the world. Because that to me is Fun with a capital F! Please. Even I'm not *that* crazy. So it behooved me to find out who these crazy people were and what makes for crazier people than Ironman triathletes. Throughout the conversation Jennifer revealed many parallels between documentary storytelling and fashion photography/videography (and pretty much all forms of storytelling). It was only after editing and listening to the conversation that I realized Jennifer gave us so much depth and insight into the process of putting together a story that moves the audience. From shooting to editing, Jennifer knows it all and imparts a ton of knowledge especially when it comes to getting good interviews! Check out Desert Runners (link below) and her Jennifer's current project documenting the life of the world's greatest percussionist Sheila E! Special Guest Dr. Chad Nelson

On this podcast we have the CEO of the Surfrider Foundation Dr. Chad Nelson. “Chad’s 16 years at the Surfrider Foundation as the Environmental Director has been marked by outstanding stewardship of our conservation mission,” Surfrider Foundation’s Board of Directors Chair Liisa Pierce Fiedelholtz shared in this news release. “Nelsen’s proven track-record of leading high impact campaigns has clearly demonstrated his ability to significantly build the reach of this incredible organization.” How does an organization like Surfrider Foundation reach and get people to act? What are the initiatives that Dr. Nelson is implementing to save our beaches? What makes him different from his predecessors? These are the questions I have on a topic that is near and dear to my heart. Hopefully they shed some insight on what we should all be doing to save our beaches. Enjoy! Photoshop versus plastic surgery. What are the similarities and what are the differences? Suspend your disbelief for one second and imagine that I could actually ask this question. And then imagine that we actually reached out to one of the most prestigious plastic surgeons in Beverly Hills and he came on the podcast to answer all the questions I ever had about this subject. That is this podcast. In this podcast Dr. Hovsepian breaks down the business of beauty. What is beauty? What are the standards, the practices, and the pitfalls? Is beauty truly in the eye of the beholder? And/or is it contextual, cultural, and relative? If you've ever thought about the philosophy behind beauty, this is the podcast for you. Guns. Assumptions. Nothing Political.

I grew up with guns and a dad that believed a good offense was the best defense. Through a dinner conversation I remember some events in my childhood involved guns and my dad. Through my friend's reaction I realized that these were not ordinary childhood experiences. And it got me thinking about what we take for granted to be "normal". Since Sean lives in NYC, we recorded this podcast by cobbling together two separate high quality recordings. As a failsafe measure, I also recorded our Skype session. But after we ended the podcast we kept talking and more nuggets of gold fell out of our conversation. Some things have been edited out but the conversation is still very much intact and Sean has given his permission to share the behind-the-scenes dialogue with the audience. Enjoy! Special Guest Sean Dunne

On this podcast we have documentary filmmaker Sean Dunne. Known for Oxyana (2013), Man in Van (2009) and American Juggalo (2011). His unique perspective strikes at the paradigm of traditional documentaries by capturing his subjects in their natural state without forcing a specific agenda or narrative. As such, Sean's films often evoke strong emotional responses. This is a thought-provoking conversation about being present, honest, and reflective. Sean's perspective contrasts my perspective of scripting videos and shoots by showcasing how you can "ride the wild" when you surrender to the present. Relationship Change

Sometimes relationships change. And you either stay in or you get out. And/or sometimes the relationship changes you. This podcast is about my (Charles Lucima's) relationship with photography in the context of change and evolution and what I want out of this relationship. I bring up some parallels. Like my relationship with blackjack (yes, gambling) and mountain biking. We talk about some of the things I get from photography and some of the things I don't get from photography and even some things that I want now that I didn't even want before. What the hell am I talking about? Listen and find out. Special Guest Jonathan Franklin

"Jonathan Franklin is an investigative journalist who has reported for the New York Times, Boston Globe and the Guardian. Based in Santiago, Chile with his wife and 7 daughters he tends to live off the grid, especially when writing books. Or magazine stories in Esquire, GQ, Playboy, and Men’s Journal as he chronicles the world of extreme survival, cocaine madmen, and football mayhem, as well as the standard interviews with hit men, kidnappers and cocaine submarine commanders. In October 2010 Franklin secured a book deal to write 33 Men, the definitive account of the Chilean miners, a non fiction book about the experience of the miners in the 2010 Copiapó mining accident. He reported extensively from the San Jose mine for The Guardian and The Washington Post. Franklin's experiences and insider accounts became the basis of a 60 Minutes TV program about the miners, an article in People magazine, a series of audio lectures on the BBC and multiple articles around the world. Franklin says, "While 2,000 journalists were locked behind police lines, my 'Rescue Team' pass enabled me to experience up close the final six weeks of this miracle rescue. It was my honor to watch the drama unfold in its many moments of beauty and courage and comedy; and to see, first-hand, the profound unity that made this operation succeed." In 2015, he published the book 438 Days: An Extraordinary True Story of Survival at Sea, based on the account of José Salvador Alvarenga, the Salvadoran fisherman who spent 14 months adrift in the Pacific Ocean." In this podcast Charles talks to Jonathan Franklin about how he became a world-famous investigative journalist. Jonathan recounts stories of starting a detective agency at the age of 10, investigating the dean's office at Brown University for admission corruption, digging through the trash cans of the Rhode Island AND San Francisco Police Department, conning his way backstage at a U2 concert and then meeting the band, getting hired as a mortician at the Dover Air Force Base and uncovering the true number of dead American troops and more. It's clear that Jonathan possesses a unique ability to get the inside track. This podcast is an inside look at the man who got 2 of this century's biggest stories: 33 Men and 438 Days. Organic Mutation

This podcast is the followup to Precision. It's about "organic mutation" aka "happy mistakes". Where the last podcast was all about precision and not making mistakes, this podcast is about when mistakes are a blessing in disguise. Charles gives three examples when he made such mistakes and how the photography community responded to those images and where the value lies in making mistakes. Precision

Charles makes a mistake and gets really upset about the situation. Thus a podcast was born. This podcast talks about mistakes. Systematic versus random errors. How little mistakes can reflect poorly on you. How little mistakes can cost you time, money, or even your life. This podcast is chockfull of examples about how being precise can truly benefit you as a photographer. Precision should be a guiding philosophy in your journey as a photographer. What does this mean for photographers? Systematic errors have serious implications for photographers affecting (but not limited to) the following issues: - Dodging and burning - Getting better models - Developing a consistent style - Scoping out locations site-unseen - Multi-tasking (camera settings, manual focus, prisms, lighting, model direction, etc.) Are all mistakes bad? No. This podcast will be the impetus for the next podcast about when mistakes can be good. That podcast will be called "organic mutation". Missed Opportunity

A private workshop photographer tells Charles about a request to speak about fashion photography at a local college. Except he isn't a working professional fashion photographer. And to make matters worse, his "arch rival" is speaking as well. So he declines the invitation. This podcast is about what Charles would have asked this photographer do in this situation. This is a learning lesson about opportunity, perspective, defining success, and not missing an opportunity to differentiate yourself from the competition. For the first time Charles goes against photographers going pro. Better Podcast Guests and Salesmanship

Keith is out of the office so Charles goes solo and gives a candid look at how to be a better podcast guest. While it may seem irrelevant if you don't plan on becoming a podcast guest, the techniques discussed really boil down to salesmanship and presentation. Therefore the ideas in this podcast really apply to all photographers because by learning how to be a better podcast guest you can improve your ability to sell yourself. And as photographers we are always trying to sell ourselves. Perhaps the commonality between podcasting, sales, and photography is simply being a good conversationalist. If Your Life Were a Movie: Special Guest Mark Reay

This is episode 5 of the LUCIMA Podcast series, "If Your Life Were a Movie". Everyone has a story to tell. Human stories about change, transformation and often redemption. Through real life story arcs, our special guests explain how they became who they are today. Join us for an inside look into some amazing stories. As it turns out Mark's life *is* a movie. The Hollywood Reporter writes: "Call it high-functioning homelessness: Mark Reay, a onetime male model who looks like a silver-fox socialite, takes photos of New York fashionistas during the day and sneaks up to a rooftop each night, huddling in a hidden sleeping bag until morning. Showing how he manages to keep his homelessness secret, director Thomas Wirthensohn (a model himself, who met Reay in the '90s and makes his debut here) offers a fascinating look at life in a city where getting by can be a lot more complicated than it seems. His investigation of Reay's psyche is less deep than one might hope for, but the observational material alone is enough to merit attention on the doc circuit — and probably to scare New Yorkers who live with the knowledge that good gigs can vanish in an instant." In this podcast Charles speaks with Mark via Skype as Mark still lives in New York City. The conversation reveals backstories and details about the making of the documentary and Mark answers some tough questions that arose from Charles and Keith's pre-interview discussion. Questions like, "Why don't you have long-term relationships? Why don't you just live with your mother? How many cigarettes do you smoke a day?" If you want an inside look at the inside look of Mark Reay, this is your podcast. Mark Reay Pre-Interview Discussion

Per the Hollywood Reporter: "Mark Reay, a onetime male model who looks like a silver-fox socialite, takes photos of New York fashionistas during the day and sneaks up to a rooftop each night, huddling in a hidden sleeping bag until morning. Showing how he manages to keep his homelessness secret, director Thomas Wirthensohn (a model himself, who met Reay in the '90s and makes his debut here) offers a fascinating look at life in a city where getting by can be a lot more complicated than it seems. His investigation of Reay's psyche is less deep than one might hope for, but the observational material alone is enough to merit attention on the doc circuit — and probably to scare New Yorkers who live with the knowledge that good gigs can vanish in an instant." Usually we do this after the interview but after watching the documentary Homme Less, Keith and I had so many thoughts that we decided to discuss Mark before actually talking to Mark. This led to some opposing perspectives (as usual) and raised lots of questions that I eventually asked Mark. If Your Life Were a Movie: Special Guest Ronnie Toth

This is episode 4 of the LUCIMA Podcast series, "If Your Life Were a Movie". Everyone has a story to tell. Human stories about change, transformation and often redemption. Through real life story arcs, our special guests explain how they became who they are today. Join us for an inside look into some amazing stories. Here's what Charles had to say about Ronnie prior to this interview: I've been wanting to get Ronnie on podcast ever since we started doing the "If Your Life Were a Movie" series. Seeing how he recovered from the crash is nothing short of a miracle. I mean, if you were to tell his story people would accuse you of making stuff up. As an endurance athlete since he was young, Ronnie had been training to be a Navy SEAL since he was 12 years old. After college he takes a stance against the war on terror and does not enlist for the Navy. By abruptly departing from his lifelong goal he falls into depression and becomes suicidal. At the suggestion of friends and family Ronnie starts cycling again and quickly becomes professional. Sprinting to the finish line at one of the biggest bicycle races of the year he crashes face first into a metal barrier at 42MPH. He breaks his arm in three places, shatters his face (almost loses an eye) and almost dies. In 25 days he is back on the bike (21 of those days spent in the hospital). I remember seeing him at the Rose Bowl a couple months after the crash. He had lost 35 pounds and looked like a shadow of the man he was before. To make matters worse Ronnie endured a divorce during the recovery of his crash. And yet he still stands. Proud, optimistic and stronger than ever. He's been racing and even winning again barely a year after his crash. And more impressive than his recovery is his ability to inspire others. Whether on Facebook, Instagram, or on Strava, Ronnie always looks for the opportunity to motivate and inspire his audience with personal stories and uplifting quotes. But where does he get his optimism? Where does he find inspiration why does he choose to inspire others? Why is he driven to succeed when others would so readily accept defeat? These are the questions I wanted to ask him. There are few heroes in the world, but Ronnie Toth is one of mine. I hope you enjoy this podcast.
