I'm sure you are aware how important he is to the show, and how incredibly grateful we were to have him visit the studio a couple of years ago. This has been his life's purpose, whether it is being imprisoned as one of the most successful cannabis smugglers in history, or as a writer of his memoir 'Mr Nice' which brought the drugs debate to a whole new generation. Howard is every bit the British gentleman, mixing his outlaw status with a brilliantly warm personality. His blend of kind heartedness and bold adventurism is what we've always been about at London Real. Howard is charming, witty, and intelligent. He answers some tough questions about his links with the IRA, and he reveals how he managed to survive in the brutal American prison system. Some parts of his story are just incredible! He infiltrated Pakistan on the behalf of drug lords, maintained over forty different identities and passports, and doubled as an agent for the British secret service. While serving his sentence in the infamous Terra Haute prison in the US he discovered that the best way to survive in a tough environment was to serve others. You can't get more London Real than that! Even hardened criminals respond tosomeone delivering value! Howard acted as a lawyer for other prisoners and helped some with literacy skills and education. In the course of revisiting this London Real favourite, you'll see just how Howard managed to ride the massive ups and downs of his adventurous life. He has this joyful energy about him, and doesn't take himself too seriously. He's also got the most amazingly deep and musical voice, and a disarming smile. For almost a century now the UK and, more zealously, the United States have waged a war on drugs. The cost? Hundreds of billions in taxpayer money and countless lives wasted and families' social mobility hurt by criminal convictions. Governments have a lot invested in the line that drugs are bad, horror stories fill the newspapers and substances get the blame for all kinds of social illness. As far as the White House and Westminster are concerned, the debate is settled. Of course, the real world is not so black and white. The only enemy to progressive conversation is disinformation and misinformation. The War on Drugs, like any war, has been a dirty conflict of myth casting and scaremongering. In the past, the public could be forgiven for having been sold lies and propaganda, but the relentless and roaring digital modernity we live in won't tolerate it one bit. The thirst to conform our legal system to something less archaic is real. This week's guest, Dr Carl Hart, grew up in a poverty stricken neighbourhood in Miami. An abuser and seller of drugs he would keep a handgun in his car for protection. He, like many, was convinced drugs and addiction were the cause of his neighbourhoods problems. After joining the military then studying neuroscience, that all changed. Under real scientific scrutiny the drug myths spun to him his whole life collapsed. Now an Ivy League university professor, TED fellow, author and multiple prize winner in his field, Carl - like the great Neil DeGrasse Tyson - promotes education to dispel the misinformation that has fogged public judgement for so long. The problem doesn't seem to be the drugs but how we handle them. The Spartans, nearly 3 millennia after their city-state disappeared, are still recognised as the hardest and most resilient armies in the history. If you're familiar with the movie 300, you may be surprised to know that the movie is based on real historical documentation of a battle in which 300 badass Spartan warriors defended Greece from a Persian army of thousands. How? Because of their "sign me up" attitude that feared comfort over challenge. How do you match up though? When was the last time you truly pushed yourself? It's hard to test yourself running a 9-5 in an office, right? In a scene from the movie Green Street, one character says, "Once you realise you're not made of glass, you don't feel alive unless you're pushing yourself as far as you can go." Determination, focus and discipline are the traits of every warrior that competes in the Spartan Race. It's go hard or go home.
